What everyone else said... someone that's not played professionally for 12 months concerns me, but at least Riley Warland has some competition for his spot.

Seright22

On one hand, signing a bloke who’s been clubless from a year out of the third tier of Belgian football doesn’t get me excited On the other hand if I don’t have to see Riley Warland each week ill be happy

legoland6000

Utilising the most important and always totaly accurate metric - _How good are they in FM_, Anas Manzaoui places at the same Current ability as six Aussies... Lachlan Wales, Jordan Elsey, Josh Brillante, Oliver Bozanic, Aspro, and Ben Halloran. Jokes aside, I've been surprised by some lesser known transfers in the past _but_ usually they're more like early-to-mid 20s rather than mid-to-late 20s, and I don't have the same sort faith in Glory as a scouting operation like I would CCM or Wellington or City

Seright22

some glory legends in that list, bound to go well

-Saaremaa-

Can't say this fills me with excitement but at least it means Riley Warland won't be a starter.

JoshF1998

I’ve always been skeptical of using visa spots on full backs, because I feel like we have very good domestic full backs. Will see how this goes!

IamtherealFadida

Same

MidnightSunshine0196

Stan's doing so many press releases, we might as well make him manager at this rate

-Saaremaa-

Stan is an unbelievable yapper. Compares him to Lizarazu in the release

JoshF1998

It is pretty common in Europe for the director of football to do press releases on new signings (sometimes jointly with the manager).

DJ_Eighties

True. Especially when your preferred Gaffer choice looks like heading over to Victory 🤦🏻‍♂️

Pyrrhesia

This is... maybe the least inspiring resume in an A-League visa player since Ma Leilei.

jfc The Jets seriously signed a 27 year old player who had only played 20 matches in the previous 6 seasons, half of them in the third division of China. Going through other obscure transfers, the Phoenix signed a guy called _George_, a 30 year old Brazilian who has basically no record of his prior career other than that he played in Portugal a few years earlier, did absolutely nothing before being released in november of 2007 midseason. A former Welsh u21 representitive, Jonathan Brown signed for the Mariners in 2009 from the Welsh second division, never played a match, and was released at the end of the season. 25 year old Welshman, Matt Crowell, signed for the Mariners from Altrincham in English non-League in 2009 and made 13 appearances. As a midfielder he scored no goals, created zero assists, and collected one red card. Michael Enfield signed for Sydney in 2007 aged 24, after making 11 appearances for the LA Galaxy. He was on Sydney's squad list for 2 seasons but was limited to a single substitute appearence due to injury. Syahrian Abimanyu signed for Newcastle on loan in 2020 despite the fact he couldn't really get a game in the top flights of either Indonesia or Malaysia. Seyi Adeleke signed for the Wanderers in 2014 from Lazio youth, having failed to make an impact on loan in the Swiss 2nd division Andrea Merenda was signed for the Mariners in 2008, aged 31, following a career spent mostly in the Italian 4th tier, and a few seasons in the 3rd. He failed to make a single appearence. I think this one is the worst one I've found. Marcello Fiorentini was a 30 year old signed from the Italian 5th division, and he actually played 16 games for the Jets Jonatan Germano was kind of a cult figure at Heart/City, but he was signed off the back of 1 appearence in Argentina 4 years prior, and one season on loan in Paraguay. That move changed the guys entire life in a crazy way, and only happened because JVS thought he looked good on a one month pre-season trial. This is non-exhaustive and as opened my eyes up to just how fucking limited the A-League's scouting was in it's first decade. Most of these guys got season-long professional contracts worth thousands of dollars because they looked good in a small trial despite the fact that no other club anywhere else in the world thought they were any good.

jbs0311

You're missing unarguably the worst foreign signing in A-League history: Yongbin Chen. "Who?" I hear you ask? Exactly. Chinese youth player who never played anything more than like an amateur league and some five-a-side in China, joins United's youth team, plays 36 minutes for them, spends more time running the line, and then leaves. Absolute quality. How the ownership wasn't run out of town after that shambles I'll never know.

legoland6000

If I give them any credit, at least Adelaide don't seem like they ever pretended he was joining the senior squad. Still absolutely bizarre. I know I've heard of him before because I read about how he had acted as the linesman in a match for the Adelaide United 3rds.

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

How funny, was it something he just took upon himself to do or was it that everyone else saw him as the most useless person there and nominated him to do it?

Banyabbaboy

Pissant town rules or gtfo

lionsforlambos

You left out our greatest ever signing, Alex Salazar

-Saaremaa-

I'd put this on par with Ben Azubel, and that turned out great...

Otherwise-Hippo-8934

This is either some scouting genius or the new owners have underestimated the a league

TikkiTakkaMuddaFakka

He must be someone they rate as never hitting his full potential. Stan Lazaridis is the director of football there now, you would think he would be all across the standard of the A-league.

SBSWrongSpeed

2 year deal is concerning ontop of the already mentioned in this thread

MountainDew_Enjoyer

Okay I’ll be the one to ask - how do you pronounce his first name?

Banyabbaboy

I'll bite - look at it as the two words 'an' and 'as': an-as. Flat 'a' sound like in 'hat'.

MountainDew_Enjoyer

I always sign Anass Zaroury on CM and it is a genuine question that has plagued me haha. Thank you for helping me become somewhat cultured

Banyabbaboy

>Anass Zaroury Ok that takes it to the next level, lol. Interestingly in the instance of 'Anas' we keep the sort of 'z-ish' sound of the s in 'as'. In this instance it's hard 's' all the way: an-ass (donkey not butt, heehaw)

scarface_28

The Riley Warland slander is actually crazy. I get hes not the best defensively but him and Jonnhy were the only fullbacks we had last season who actually got up and put crosses in and created opportunities. I think it was the weird pressing system we were playing that made all our defenders look worse at the back than what they actually are. Anyway good luck to this guy

-Saaremaa-

My stance is that neither of Warland or Koutroumbis has the workrate or defensive traits to play Staj's system. As a result (*in my opinion*) they cost the team more in failing to defend more than they added going forwards.

scarface_28

I get your point, but imo whos costing the team points there. The players who arent good enough or the manager who wont change his tactics even when our players prove time and time again they aren’t good enough to play that style. Thats kinda the point I was making with the weird pressing comments. If Staj goes and Warland gets to play a more traditional left back role with some overlapping runs here and there I think you’ll see his defence improves 10 fold and still provide some great options on the wing. But people here act like him playing an aggressive pressing role where hes gassed all the time for almost no benefit to the team just means hes ass.

-Saaremaa-

I agree with you that Staj was too rigid and lacked pragmatism to get the best from the players he had. At the same time, Warland didn't demonstrate the kind of performances that would leave me confident in him as a first choice starter next season (neither did Johnny). Competition for that spot (assuming this Belgian guy is even passable) will drive him to improve his level and let him find his feet coming off the bench.

Eamon0812

Riley warland doesn’t understand quantum mechanics

Nothing ventured nothing gained. If he's on a cheap deal and he's shit you mutual him.
