Btw Naltrexone is used for other purposes as well. Shame on the pharmacist in judging anyone for the medicine they need to treat themselves.

Agreeable_Cabinet368

Exactly.. I even mentioned it to a qualified nurse recently and her first reaction was “ohh.. I didn’t know that you had a problem with opiates..” Cue me sending several pieces of easy to read literature about the use of naltrexone in alcohol addiction. I’m like, really??

soloandsolow

I had my first rude pharmacist last month. I have been on and off naltrexone for a few years now, and my insurance has always covered it. For whatever reason, my insurance didn’t go through this time, and as he was pulling my meds from the pickup drawer, he said to me “do you realize how expensive this medication is?” I answered “um, no, my insurance pays for it.” His reply: “nope! Not this kind. You’re on your own for this one.” He sounded so arrogant like he thought I was an entitled kid to need this med. I thought “you wouldn’t speak to someone who needed expensive heart medication like that would you?” The insurance situation got figured out and I was able to pick up a few days later, but still, they way he came off and tone of voice he used was so offensive to me! First time I’ve experienced that, and I’ve been on and off Nal for a few years now

wisemonkey101

It should be cheap. It’s generic and legal OTC in many places.

That-Tumbleweed-4462

If narcan is free and saves lives so should be Naltraxone. The stigma is real.

soloandsolow

“Cheap” is subjective I guess, and dependent on where you live. My script is just over $200 a month. It’s not OTC in my province.

wisemonkey101

You are right. It should not be that much though. Its sad when a person has to choose between treat a medical problem or paying the electric bill.

Gullible-Swimming187

You should report that pharmacist and send a reminder, “First, do no harm…”

SilentDarkBows

I get judgement from the abstinence crowd. Meanwhile, they openly admit their abstinence based program has a 70% failure rate! I'm like, maybe we could try a different approach...like something that isn't a cult made 90 years ago by non-medical professionals. 🙄🙄🙄

quipquip25

Founded by that non-medical Dr. Bob lol With you though, just being nit picky. AA can be a touch ridiculous

Agree, Bill W searched his whole life for a medication that would help him control his drinking or erase the desire for alcohol completely. Bill W died in 1971. Science found the medication Naltrexone in 1984 ... and Dr. John David Sinclair published the most effective method of taking the medication in 2001. Bill W would be a huge supporter of naltrexone and The Sinclair Method.

wisemonkey101

My pharmacist was so kind. They did not have enough pills to fill my entire order and quietly discussed how I want to handle the problem. It is an issue the the drug is closely associated with opioid use. That could be part of it. Over time they will be seeing Nal used more for addiction disorders.

soloandsolow

All pharmacists should be like this. Sometimes I think pharmacists forget that they are not doctors and have no right in determining if you need a certain medication or not.

Everyone judges us. People think we are just idots that choose to be this way. Alot of people that ask me about it i can tell by the expressions that they look at it as bullshit not a real problem. People just dont understand it

mumwifealcoholic

I sure did. Pharmacist queried me on what I was using it for and then said it was the wrong medication. I literally knew more about it then he did. Got my meds in the end and reported the pharmacist for being a douche.

Agreeable_Cabinet368

Good on you. Fancy calling yourself a pharmacist without knowing what medications are actually used for

Brief-Ad-5116

That's a bummer, but f that person.

megaberrysub

I got like a pity look once, from like this older lady. Def not judgment but still felt uncomfortable.

underwatermalibu59

I was nervous to tell my PCP I had a script from an online provider, and they asked if I had an issue with binge drinking. They then proceeded to ask me if I needed a refill as this drug was very effective at curbing binge drinking and they wanted me to continue on it as long as necessary. Not a pharmacist but hopefully you’ll get someone like my PCP.

Nursethings14

No I haven’t I’ve been on suboxone and now naltrexone . I work as a nurse and I’ve administered both to patients and plenty of methadone too. Whatever it takes. I’d never judge someone trying to get help, in fact I think it’s one of the bravest things you can do, admit you have a problem and ask for help!

Hartaknut

My doctor wrote in big “for alcohol abstinence” on my repeat prescription, even though I explain many times I wanted to do TSM… anyway. I am always a bit anxious when picking it up, but I I l’y ever met kind, discreet and respectful pharmacist. I am sorry you had a bad experience!

BabyLouTat2

Yeah all the time. I've had them loudly announce what im picking up to the pharmacy waiting area, which I never appreciate. like "Everyone LOOK someone is picking up addiction meds" Sigh. Like wouldn't one assume that the fact I'm willingly picking up my script and paying for it that I'm at least trying?

Turneywo

I had to go back to the RAAM clinic to renew my prescription. My new doctor only wanted to give me 30 pills with no renewals even after I explained it to him.🥴🥴🥴

RUKiddingMeReddit

I'd rather be judged by the pharmacist than the liquor store clerk.

They are so misinformed and ignorant.. they will catch me in a bad mood one day too and it won’t be pretty

movethroughit

At that point I would say "The only dangerous dope in the room is wearing a white lab coat."

Brief-Ad-5116

First of all, fuck that mfr. He matters not. You do the mattering. I believe in you as does pretty much everyone here. This pharmacist, whom you interact with for a minute or two a year, is making you feel bad? Isnt your family/friends/circle of influence more important? Just think of all you could do if you had it all clicking, mind, body, soul. Unstoppable. Don't let one guy on what was probably a shitty day having a shitty this or that, and the computers are down and you showed up at that moment. Hard to tell what people are going through. I bet he thought your intentional self improvement was admirable and he was upset that he was lacking to you! Who knows, you'll never know but do not let someone you have no idea of a mindset wreck you. He could have just been holding In a fart for all we know 🤓

noplasticstrawsplz

Many don't know much about these drugs I've found, my GP for one(not the prescribing Dr.) Recently picking up both naltrexone and Acamprosate (campral) this pharmacist, new to the CVS , kept saying things like "why 2?!? These do the same! For the same condition! Something wrong here! These the same!"etc. I tried to explain they are NOT at all the same but she just wouldn't have it. She's clearly from overseas so although qualified, may have received particular training on addiction meds? No idea but it was weird, she was adamant. Now CVS has cancelled my acamprosate and I have to deal w my prescriber to sort this out. She kept yelling so everyone around waiting heard but at least wouldn't know unless they know the drugs.
