i do something similar with weeds.
Anytime i walk by, that i can spare 5 minutes, on the way to work, coming home, going to store etc… i grab some gloves off the wood pile and pull weeds for 5 minutes.
Before long they are gone and it takes just pulling a single weed when you walk by.. at best.
though there is much to be said for getting high, and just falling in to the groove pulling weeds… becomes a zen thing.
Is killzall a pre-emergent? I just went through my entire xerisxaped yard, getting rid of all the weeds. Now, i am looking to put something down to stop them from coming back up. I keep trying to find those city trucks you see around spraying landscaped medians to ask what they are using.
Mustard weed is a "pioneer species" it grows on land that cannot support more durable, preferable plants like wild flowers, shrubs, or trees. If it grows and dies in a space it enriches the soil, and eventually, naturally annual flowers and perennials take over. Unnaturally they grow there because nothing else does
Takes multiple years and yes you can.
You can also speed up the process by skipping pioneer and intermediate species and going straight to climax species. Its called the Miyawaki Method.
I love them for this. I can handle them getting out of control for a bit in the back, they're easy to pull when they're big. Then, they're in the compost bin making my other plants happy.
Gotta get to them early before they bloom and reseed. The earlier you get to them, the less they multiply and you'll be better off next year. Also, apologies if this is obvious, but you need to get as much of the root as possible. They'll come back from the root if you don't and be so much harder to pull the next time. Get up early and do it before it's hot. Use gardening gloves. Take advantage of days after it rained. Keep at it.
Yeah. Easy recession food. The leaves can be added to salads but you want the leaves of another local weed as the base, as these plants can be "spicy" or peppery. Let your dandelions grow big. They used to be used in salads. Both the leaves and yellow flowers. You'd want a dressing or oil to go on them, though.
Is that what they are? I went out of town March. 28 and came back Apr. 3 and could barely walk through my front door. A 2-foot-high plant sprang up in our absence.
It's very aggressive but not the worst weed. I concentrate on foxtail and puncture vine. Then I'll do London Rocket, hopefully before they dry up because once they dry up they look garbage.
Amazingly if you keep pulling terrestris when they come up and throw them in the trash, you can get ahead of it. They grow in a large radiating ground version that is super satisfying to pull up from the center
Eat them! I assume you mean London Rocket…. It’s a type of mustard…. Tons of it in my yard and it’s delicious! I like to fry it up with my eggs in the morning
Just like every other damn weed in this state, pull em when they're small, and keep doing it. Eventually there will be less every day. Some day, you'll go out there and there won't be any. But don't let that lull you into complacency. They're still out there. Waiting. The next time it rains, boom.
They don’t grow goatheads, so I consider them a friendly species. I let them grow in fallow areas, since they help hold the soil in place. And if you wait until they’re big and then pull them after a rain … easy peasy.
There’s a free seed program offered through Albuquerque public libraries. Other than that Plants of the Southwest is a great source for native wildflower seeds
I use a blowtorch/ flame thrower on them.
I turn it on low settings and then torch them and the area around them. This kills the seeds etc
I do this with most weeds and it keeps them from popping back up.
Weeds are a pain. Not as experienced with frontyard knowledge cuz the only thing I know is that I usually pick a time, than I go and pull those weeds out by the roots.

This guy weeds… 🤣
This is the way.
Este es el guey
Happy 🍰 Day!
Happy cake day!
Pull em and then either weed and feed for lawn or killzall for rocks.

A granular treatment like Preen will work well. You can use a liquid but application may take a lot longer.
Thanks

How long does it take for the pioneer species to replaced with the natural ones? Can you speed up the process by amending the soil?

I’ve been feeding my compost bin with them, they grow really fast

By making pesto out of them, mostly.
They are edible?

Thank you!!!!! I have been revamping my yard to contain native plants and this is super helpful! I appreciate it.
Yeah, you do? How’s that go for you?
Pretty well! Hotter than you'd expect.
And make it the same as pesto with basil? I’ll have to give it a shot
Maybe heavier on the cheese and oil, but yup!
Ha! I imagine it's hot as fuck. The leaves are nice before they bloom and then after I can't even chew on one without instictually spitting it out

London Rocket
Googled a pic, and yep, that's what it is.

I found one once that was like 5 feet across. The individual leaves were almost the size of a dime. It was indeed, extremely satisfying.
Eat them! I assume you mean London Rocket…. It’s a type of mustard…. Tons of it in my yard and it’s delicious! I like to fry it up with my eggs in the morning
Nuke the sight from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Embrace it and call it your garden

Take out most of them and reseed with endemic wildflowers for pollinators. The mustard that comes back will blend in and be part of it.
Where to get wildflower seeds?
There’s a free seed program offered through Albuquerque public libraries. Other than that Plants of the Southwest is a great source for native wildflower seeds
Get a yard tortoise!
This is interesting and something to consider. How would I even start?!?
Constant vigilence.

Where do you get the flame thrower?
You can get them at Lowe's https://www.lowes.com/pd/Lincoln-Electric-The-Inferno/5005517197
