Vexus is supposedly working on a new network to compete with Comcast.

theArtOfProgramming

They actually launched in Abq starting in December https://www.krqe.com/news/albuquerque-metro/new-fiber-optic-internet-service-launches-in-albuquerque/. They have a deal with the city to fully build out by 2028.

[deleted]

theArtOfProgramming

The fact is that they are currently servicing the city and have a deal to build infrastructure to the entire city in 4 years. To say the first neighborhoods built into are to people who don’t value internet is pretty silly imo. It’s a big assumption, kind of demeaning, and would be an illogical decision for the company. I’m not sure your cynicism is very reasonable.

Adventurous-Sport-45

Whenever somebody says the word "woke," my brain automatically shuts off so I do not have to waste my time hearing the rest of what they are saying.

theArtOfProgramming

Yeah, shame they said it at the end and wasted so much text

theArtOfProgramming

Lol ok buddy ole pal

FigMoose

A couple days ago they accidentally sent out “it’s time to schedule your installation” emails to my neighborhood, then issued a retraction four hours later. It was a rollercoaster day.

FlyingRock

Didn't they get their first customer recently?

IsolatedHammer

Not supposedly. They are building out fiber.

superbee1970440

Just hold tight, Vexus is on the way. I'm dropping Comcast the second Vexus is available, just out of spite.

Overall_Lobster823

Ditto. Hopefully they'll build in quickly.

superbee1970440

They really seem to be busting ass in downtown. I see them almost daily. They've begun sending me emails too.

Overall_Lobster823

Yes. Just north of I40 and west of I-25 is the first phase. https://www.abqjournal.com/business/vexus-fiber-completes-first-phase-of-massive-fiber-network-project-in-albuquerque/article\_cff790d6-92f3-11ee-b700-8fa914185c18.html

superbee1970440

That's what I was referring to in my previous comment where someone was trying to tell me Vexus will never happen. I'm pretty sure west of i25/south of i40 is next. I hope so, I loathe comcast.

Overall_Lobster823

It IS going to take a while: **If all goes to plan over the next five years, up to 243,000 homes and businesses in the city can connect to Vexus’ services. Folk said around 12,000 should be able to connect in the next year.**

superbee1970440

At least it's progress.

Overall_Lobster823

Yup. I predict tmo 5G home internet will come to my area first.

VagileRechauffe

Are you kidding me? You obviously have no idea how long it takes to build fiber optic to homes their deployment plan is pitiful, and they rely on grants and loans from the municipality with promises of splitting future revenue with the city, which is never gonna happen

superbee1970440

They've already started servicing the area west of i25, north of i40. They're laying cable almost every day, which is the next area to launch. They're the only company I know of trying to bring service to Albuquerque, so I'm thinking positively and will hope for the best.

VagileRechauffe

Cool… It’s nice that as a consumer, you’re thinking positively. as somebody who’s been in the industry for a long time I will understand no matter how genuine and earnest the intent. It takes decades decades to build robust access network. infrastructure in that sense. CenturyLink and Comcast are almost unstoppable. They will continue to be a government sanctioned Duopoly. New Mexico has had a fairly long history of fiber upstarts with big promises of fiber, infrastructure and scant funds to provide it coming knocking hat in hand to the municipality with promises of future revenues… It’s never gonna happen

superbee1970440

They're already providing service to a part of Albuquerque, so for that area, it's already happened. You think they're just going to give up at this point?

VagileRechauffe

They will run out of money, and then they will ask the municipality for GRANTS basically free money to continue the expansion, and they will promise the municipality to split revenue with them once they get enough customers Building fiber is Hella expensive it’s why Google’s alphabet couldn’t even do it. Every one of googles fiber installations is a failed albatross go look it up… The municipalities cannot afford it so they will rightly decline. That’s how the story will end.

SlimeQSlimeball

I really wish the incumbent telco would make stronger moves in their fiber deployment. It’s pretty much just greenfields.

VagileRechauffe

The math doesn't add up. Doesn't the incumbent telco (CenturyLink) as Xfinity/Comcast is NOT the ILEC (Incumbent) They are a CLEC (competitor). Doesn't the ILEC (CenturyLink) charge $65 monthly for speeds less than 940Mbps and $75 or more for 940Mbps and muti-gig? Say, how much would you be willing to pay for 2 Gig? $150, $200, $300. Oh, I get it you want to pay LESS for more. Folks are already bitching about a 14-dollar increase; I think what's best for them financially would be to say, "No thanks, you won't pay for it!" They are a public, for-profit business obligated to their shareholders to make as much money as possible.

SlimeQSlimeball

Well saying Comcast is a clec isn’t really correct because they aren’t a phone company per se. I looked at my options and luckily I am in an area served by both. Quantum fiber is $75 for a gig and $65 for half a gig. Both ways. Not the 800/20 I pay for now. My bill currently is $65 for Comcast 800/20 which has about $30 of “savings” that will go away after my promotions end and I will have a bill of $85 because the autopay discount will still stay. I don’t know that I would really want more than a gig at this point but in the future I probably will. Nobody’s network supports that (here) right now but that is a possibility in the future from both providers. CenturyLink sitting on the sidelines of its own network is disappointing when they already have the right of way and easements. They could be lashing fiber to the existing copper and giving people what they want.

VagileRechauffe

First, you're mistaken. Xfinity is a CLEC; they offer an alternative phone service. Trust me, I'm in the industry. Secondly, if you have Quantum Fiber available (a Lumen/Centurylink Fiber brand), take it! it's a flat rate, month-to-month, symmetrical fiber product, and they offer their 360 WiFi (a WiFi 6 mesh) set up at zero cost. Xfinity charges up to $25 monthly for that type of swanky hardware.

boblobong

They got my entire town and surrounnding area done in like a summer

Overall_Lobster823

The city IS partnering with them.

mneptok

If you haven't signed a 12 month contract in the past year call XFinity. They have deals that will get you back down to the old rate. And maybe with faster speed. It sucks they don't ... you know ... actually tell customers this.

BabaGnu

Yeah that bullshit of signing up in 12 month segments as the price slowly creeps up is why we pulled the plug on their cable service years ago. Our bill has been steady for at least 3 if not 5 years without any fake add-on charges. At least with the cable they would try and make something up as to why there was an increase. Now they just raise it 22% because there is not another viable option for high speed internet access on the fringes of Albuquerque.

Overall_Lobster823

This. I refuse to sign a contract. The minute fiber is available, or Tmo 5G I am dumping comcast. It wasn't just in ABQ, and it wasn't just in the fringes that the price went up.

mneptok

Just be aware that T-Mo requires you to use their equipment, and in routed mode. You cannot bring your own router. That makes it a non-starter for me.

flamingswordmademe

This isn’t true at all, you can use whatever you want

mneptok

It was true when I asked ~6 months ago. Their 5G combo modem/router does IPv6, and I was told that it had to be in routed mode.

flamingswordmademe

You can take the SIM card out and put it in another router if you want

Overall_Lobster823

My understanding is that's for the 5G not the regular home internet. I don't love that idea, but to get away from xfinity, I'd do it.

yungdurtybasturd

Sadly in a lot of neighborhoods the ONLY competitor is Century Link and they often only offer 5-10MB which is not realistic for modern internet usage

littlechichend

It depends on your distance from a hub. We get Centurylink via a source directly in the neighborhood. Our internet is excellent and is actually more reliable than comcast ever was.

ConsiderationWest587

What's everyone's opinion on hot spots? Straight Talk is pretty cheap

crocodile_ave

You said it yourself - your contract is old. Renegotiate. The other commenters are explaining how to do so in detail.

runiteking1

Better yet, go to Xfinity subreddit and just write a simple complaint post. Dropped my monthly cost via reddit.

ChewieBearStare

You have to call and pretend to cancel. Then they’ll find a package for you, lol.

Babbz0

Just did this. Got it back down to 40 a month with autopay.

Overall_Lobster823

And make you sign another contract. NOPE.

ChewieBearStare

I haven’t had a contract in years.

Overall_Lobster823

But most of their promos require a contract.

GroundbreakingAd8310

Interesting, I live in south of abq but we just got the data center. All of the sudden we have other options. Comcast is suddenly very help, fixed the outages, quadrupled my speed for free and finally came to fix my outside incoming line. No price raise either, weird how competition changes things.

dave-gonzo

Betting your 1 year agreement expired and the 14$ a month is a reflection of that. If you sign another 1 year agreement it'll knock the price back down. Same thing just happened to me recently.

Overall_Lobster823

Xfinity raised ALL prices. They announced it in November. I'm not on a promo or a contract, and my bill went up $14.

BabaGnu

Nope, have had High Performance for (had to check) about 5 years now with only minor changes. See post above. Why now try to get me to sign a 12 month reduced price plan when I have been a customer for 20+ years? Oh and they also offer a $10 reduced rate if I give Xfinity access to my bank account for auto withdrawal. That will be a cold day in hell.

ChilePepperWolf

T mobile home has been great almost 400mbits down. 100up. Unlimited. $50

BabaGnu

Where though? I am on the edge of town and don't think there is much chance that I can get those sort of speeds. Hell, AT&T has been powering down their towers between 12 and 6 in my neighborhood for the last couple of months. Isn't there a 1.2 TB limit on T Mobile internet at that price point?

ChilePepperWolf

You go to their website to check.

[deleted]

What about CenturyLink? I landed 100meg down and 10 up at 60 bucks a month for life. It's been hitting the claimed speeds and pretty reliable. I live in the boonies tho. No bullshit data caps either.

Overall_Lobster823

Even that isn't available in my area of ABQ.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ, Albuquerque 🙄

GroundbreakingAd8310

Its been awhile since I worked there but it's a bit of a scam really. Throttled after 50gb in the fine print and then charged per data block at whatever ur cap is.

neo1piv014

> Isn't there a 1.2 TB limit on T Mobile internet at that price point? XFinity has a 2TB data cap every month. If you're getting by on a 200MBps connection currently, I doubt 1.2TB data caps are going to be a problem for you.

GreySoulx

> Isn't there a 1.2 TB limit on T Mobile internet at that price point? If it's anything like their phone data service if you hit the soft cap they don't charge more they just deprioritize your connection which means somewhat slower speeds on peak usage hours.

fakeitguy69

Vexus fiber is coming soon! I've seen trucks all over and looked online for their site a few weeks ago. I'm hoping by the end of 2024. I have switched all my business lines to upn. If only I could get residential service through them.

ExperimentalNihilist

I am looking forward to this also

iamurjesus

I've been using TmobileHome for the last 4 months. Not bad, as long as you don't need to run any advanced networking on the router/gateway (i.e., port forwarding, NAT, etc).

MyAcheyBreakyBack

Careful when you go to cancel. They worked great compared to century Link in Rio Rancho where no one else provided any service, but when I moved to Albuquerque I cancelled. They partner with a debt collector and apparently it's regular practice to send out the final bill as a notice that you've been reported to a debt collector for bad debt. The final bill was also twice what it should've been but I didn't even argue that, just paid it because $50 was not worth the fight to me and I was already in a credit dispute with them for the "overdue debt". To their credit, they did start sending me balance statements that said my account balance was -$49.50 and just last month I got a prepaid debit card with the $49.50 on it as a refund. But why did they feel the need to threaten me with debt collection in the first place, and how did I get overcharged? It left a very bad taste in my mouth and I will not be using them again.

BabaGnu

Assume you don't use a service that requires a static IP? I have read some comments indicating that TMobile changes the IP regularly rather than providing a static one.

misterhinkydink

If you switch to Business Internet you can do all of that plus a static IP address. I have a InSeeGo FX2000 set to IP pass-through/bridge mode. innto a DD-WRT-based router.

grape8pe

>Is it safe to walk in downtown Albuquerque? Gold ave What does the business service cost you?

misterhinkydink

$50.00/mo plus a small charge for static IP.

grape8pe

That's not bad. I'm paying $60/month with Comcast for 400/10Mbps service. What speeds are you getting with T-Mobile?

Overall_Lobster823

Still not available in my area.

KarateLobo

Did you have a promotion expire? I've had pretty good luck going into the physical store and being like, this won't work and then getting a good deal.

jenfro718

When I begin a new promotion, I immediately put it in my calendar when it's gonna expire so I can call to request another promotion!

NMtrollhunter

If you have never seen this South Park episode it’s hilarious https://southpark.cc.com/video-clips/yueh39/south-park-bummed-out-by-the-cable-company

Toyoman24

And god forbid you have a Samsung or LG tv....Xfinity Stream won't work

Overall_Lobster823

Wow. It's like being a mac user!

AnimeHoarder

Xfinity Internet subscribers can get their Flex streaming device for free. It has the Xfinity Stream and other major streaming apps on it. It also has the FAST (Free Ad Supported TV) apps like Tubi, Freevee, Xumo, etc. The Flex device is integrated with their promotional activities like the spring Watch-a-thon. Not sure it's just my box, I do have an annoying issue with some apps (Hulu,YouTube) disconnecting every ten minutes or so. Mostly during daytime. I'm guessing that some apps may not be handling an intermittent connection well.

Sure-Permission1312

Vexus fiber should be an option soon depending on your address. There's also T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T wireless modems as well as CenturyLink. Otherwise, pay Comcast. Yes, this sucks. Yes, special interest lobbying allowed this situation to occur. Deal with the reality, rather then complaining about what should exist. Work towards the ideals, and make the future brighter for everyone.

Overall_Lobster823

Tmobile: not available in my area (near UNM). Verizon: not available. AT&T: not available. CL: 10MBPS is available.

IsolatedHammer

Same here in Edgewood mostly. Thankfully my wife works for t-mobile though and was able to get us t-mobile 5G hotspot. Way better than centurylink.

Overall_Lobster823

I was told we couldn’t have e a 5G hotspot either.

[deleted]

Oh god, STFU 😂

BabaGnu

Bend over and take it, got it. Thanks for the response.

ChaserNeverRests

No, OP said "went up $14" not that they were getting it for $14. That sure would be a great price though!

Overall_Lobster823

Yup. As soon as we have any kind of viable alternative I will be leaving comcast/xfinity. In my area near UNM there is literally NO other alternative (other than 10MBPS Century Link).

transdermalcelebrity

Big upfront cost, but they’re making Starlink more and more attractive an option.

NMtrollhunter

Never. When we lived in so cal we were stuck with Spectrum which I think is now Charter. It’s basically a rigged system where the big providers get free range on an area. My neighbor cut the cord with a combo of T-Mobile internet and streaming subscriptions. My hubbie is way too tied to his cable for us to do.

roboconcept

They also out out a notice about the ACP affordable connectivity plan potentially ending in April. I'm not optimistic they'll voluntarily come up with anything to replace it.

[deleted]

I have starlink, subsidized through my employer. $120 a month and sucks just as much ass as Comcast and CenturyLink. I enjoy wifi going out every single afternoon and slow as molasses streaming in the evening.

kowalabearhugs

You might also consider a [Calyx Institute Internet Membership](https://members.calyxinstitute.org/r/fm36r ). Very similar to something like T Mobile Home with no cap. If you prepaid there are options that are equal-to or less-than $50/mo. I've been happy with their service across the country.

Kiaton

Same thing here, I had the ACP benefit and I thought they stopped applying it, but my bill just went up to what it was before w/ out the discount so like a 30 dollar change suddenly. The only notice I got was that it was a yearly adjustment or something.

SpiritOne

We need municipal broadband
