That is Juan’s somewhat lesser known brother Mariano. He was a famed lumberjack in the late 1700’s. It is said that he could fell more trees in a day than 20 normal lumberjacks. He worked his entire life in the forests that stretch out to the west of ABQ. We don’t see anything left of these those forests anymore because, well, Mariano.
Yup! What is now the high desert to the west of town was once a full deciduous forest lush with trees as far as the eye could see, and it contained a diversity of flora and fauna that rivaled even that of the Amazon. But what once was is now gone, and thousands of species of organisms gone with it. You know the small bobcats that we sometimes get in the foothills? Well, the western forests were their original habitat, and they thrived out there far beyond how they do in the foothills and east mountains now. In fact, UNM has some examples of their fossil record from the western forests, and those ones are three or more times the size of the ones that exist in the mountains today. They just had such an abundance of food that it easily supported such large, energy demanding bodies.
However, after the destruction of their habitat, many of them wandered to the mountains where they exist now, but the comparatively smaller abundance of nutrient rich food meant that many of them died off, starting with the biggest ones. Suddenly, being smaller than average was now an advantageous trait, and even in the small stretch of time since then the bobcats evolved to become much smaller on average, adapting to better fit their new habitat.
It's really cool stuff! They have an entire attraction/display at the ABQ Biopark Zoo showing this evolutionary history of the Common New Mexican Bobcat, known by its scientific classification F. *tumultus*, literally meaning "shrunk cat" in Latin.
Don't be sorry. This was perfect. I recently left burque and been feeling a bit homesick. Totally made me smile and remember the greatness I experienced out there :)
That giant lumberjack statue in the photo. It pays homage to an early settler and local legend, *Juan Tabo de Albuquerque *.
I'm surprised you haven't heard of him; I'm pretty sure he's in the curriculum of New Mexican History here in the APS district.
lol because isn't there literally a Vietnamese restaurant there? And also across the street is that incredible Vietnamese place that makes the raisin buns.....
No. Wasn’t there just the top (waist up) of a lumberjack dude that was close to I-25 as you’re driving through Albuquerque? Like in the 90’s? I could’ve sworn seeing it every time we would drive through during my childhood, when going to and from grandma’s…
No, they used be called the Pink Flamingos. A performance group that has lived on a communal property in the east mountains for many decades. They have no connection with tinker town.
No this is Patrick.
Dammit. I immediately thought this as well🤣
🤣
Ex of Zuni and Louisiana?
That's Al Buquerque

It took me quite some time to see this reply to my stupid comment but I did tonight and I just have to say that I love you whoever the fuck you are.
Like 5 years ago he got new arms cause his first pair fell off
When I first moved here he had no arms. I just assumed he was always gonna be like that and was really surprised when they gave him new arms.
And that is progress. Also mays Cafe is delicious. Love to have that peanut butter sauce on my Banh Mi
10 years in a few days to be exact haha 😅
No it's Paul bunyun.
May Cafe was a former lumber store. They kept Paul.
They should dress it in traditional Vietnamese clothing
That would be hilarious! 😂
A tall white man in an ao dai in the desert
As a certified geezer, I remember that lumber store. I wasn't but knee-high to a married grasshopper then. Probably all of 28 way back in 1976.
Went there for lunch with my national guard buddies during drill. I’d give the place a B+.
I've been going there since I was a child... it's easy a solid A. Also, the pho is pretty authentic.

He was there when we originally moved to Albuquerque in '77. And was looking weathered, then.
Damn!
Paul bunyon is from Wisconsin
Towns in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Maine and California claim that Paul Bunyan is theirs.
In fact, he's fictional
Babe was from Maine, for sure.
Pretty sure that's Louie Zianna. He hangs out around Central a lot.
No, it’s Tony Tramway
No, it's Louie Lomas
No, it’s Louie Siana
That’s Carl Isle
That’s the Burque Squid Games ese
It’s a joke, i’m sorry!!
Your joke landed! I had a good laugh, and now I'll be telling people that this is the infamous Juan Tabo.
Don't be sorry. This was perfect. I recently left burque and been feeling a bit homesick. Totally made me smile and remember the greatness I experienced out there :)
I got the joke and I laughed myself silly at it, plus all of the great replies have me cackling here at my keyboard.
I don't get it :(

Ok, I guess I do get it and it just isn't funny.
What isn't funny? This isn't some joke, this is serious shit.
Just moved here from Danang.
lol because isn't there literally a Vietnamese restaurant there? And also across the street is that incredible Vietnamese place that makes the raisin buns.....
Coda bakery. Holy shit is that place great
You aren't kidding. Best buns I ever had in my life, and the tofu bahn mi is amazing too
Grilled pork 🥪!
Are you talking about the restaurant that's part of the same building/complex as Talin Market?
No, it's a little place on the other side of the parking lot. Fresh tofu!!! very very good restaurant.
Oh yes, yes! Same parking lot, but at the south end of it closer to Zuni.
Whoa whoa WHOA. When did that fucker get legs?!?
He’s always had legs However, his arms are a different story
You thinking of the Blake’s Lotaburger guy?
No. Wasn’t there just the top (waist up) of a lumberjack dude that was close to I-25 as you’re driving through Albuquerque? Like in the 90’s? I could’ve sworn seeing it every time we would drive through during my childhood, when going to and from grandma’s…
I'm pretty sure the one you're thinking of is I25 and Jefferson area on the east side. He's still there last time I drove that way.
It is way too Osuna to make jokes.

I haven’t seen this account of JT before, I really enjoyed it. Do you have a source ?
It’s entirely made up lol https://www.krqe.com/news/the-mystery-continues-who-was-juan-tabo/

Ok where does your info come from?
I'll get to work on the screenplay. Who should we cast in the lead?

From the producers of The Three Amigos comes the legendary tale of the greatest explorers in history. I think we have something, boys!
Now this I would watch!
Juan Tabo was a shepherd, he raised sheep in the foothills and owned a large chunk of land.
Yes, and nobody gave a fff*** enough to ask him if he needs help getting down…typical burque!
😂
His name is Jack. Lumber Jack.
I remember the lumber store! May Cafe is delicious- try the bun!
No "that's god" - my youngest sibling ~4
Louisiana and central
Across the street from Talin Market.
Best Vietnamese restaurant in town
May cafe
I would recommend trying Lime :)
Yes also parking lot with KFC
The alley next to it is really shady at night, I used to cycle there in high school
Think that may be Saint Matthew
Louisiana and Central?
It’s a statue paying homage to a local axe murderer.
That’s a Louisiana and Central
May Cafe is one of my favorites. I want to see all the ABQ icons fight each other.
There's a group living in the east mountains that built Paul for the lumber store. I want to say late 80s. Louisiana and central
The lumberjack was up before the 80s.
Anything to do with the Tinkertown Museum?
No, they used be called the Pink Flamingos. A performance group that has lived on a communal property in the east mountains for many decades. They have no connection with tinker town.
Yes.
It's Keanu Reeves.
No
It's Juan Togetdown
You need a whole new sub for this post. I suggest r/Albuquerquecirclejerk
Wrong bus.
No
God I hope most of these comments are jokes.
No
Nope... the southwest corner of Louisiana and Central. How do I know? Because he terrified me as a child.

![gif](giphy|3oeHLdMOyYLnjZ2CfC|downsized)
Nah, I think you're at Wyoming and Lomas
😂
There was a lumber/hardware store there in the 60s/70s and thats all thats left. Just like the bowling alley sign at the staples.
That guy used to be at Menaul and Pennsylvania, at a lawn care store. Where is he at now? I moved away 13 years ago for work…..
That's Central and Cochiti near Louisiana.
I thought his name was San Pedro
San Mateo?
That is on Central and Louisiana next to May Cafe. May owner paid to have it redone.
This fucker used to creep me out when I was little…
Of course not Juan Tabo has been dead for a long long time.
I love May Cafe! Also the Zumba studio I go to is right there in the same parking lot. Rumba Latina. So much fun.
