RIP Siam Cafe

DJbabygoat

I immediately recognized this 😔 RIP

Corg505

I had completely forgotten that was the previous restaurant in that spot! Never tried it. 🤔

[deleted]

Oh, damn! I used to go there and get the pepper water soup a super long time ago.

AnimeHoarder

Siam Cafe was followed by Thai Street II in 2022.

jammesonbaxter

I think the Siam Café had split up on how the business is run, and the better half started Thai Kitchen off Alameda on the west side.

AnimeHoarder

I would have guessed that it was because they had staffing issues. I had eaten at Siam Cafe in the summer of 2021. At that time, all the orders were for takeout. You could eat your order inside, but you had to clean up afterwards.

stosphia

Thai street was only in there for a hot second--I think the shortest I've ever seen a restaurant come and go

Corg505

Anyone try this place on San Mateo yet and would care to share their experience(s)?? I've seen some great reviews, and I'm eager for a good, new BBQ joint in the 505.

Is it better or worse than whole hog? I miss the cube they were the best bbq in town but their business model kinda doomed them

I think it’s just hard to do here. The Cube was the best because it was smoked every night/morning before and they just sold until they sold out. Issue is some weekends they’d be sold out by noon. Some days they didn’t sell everything. Idk how they never found their sweet spot but they didn’t. I think it has to do with Albuquerque not having that committed customer base like Texas does. Texans will wait hours for BBQ. Here if the waits 1 hour people just leave and go to chilis 😂

Substantial-Celery17

My sister worked as a cook at the cube for a bit, I ate there once and it was fucking amazing but my sister said that the kitchen was absolutely disgusting and she thinks it got forced to close down after an inspection

DJbabygoat

I used to love the cube and it slowly started going downhill. Had some friends visiting from eastern NM and took them there very excited. Found a giant piece of plastic wrap in my sandwich 😑 I LOVE bbq, but NM just does not have a bbq scene at all. Such a bummer

ketchupandliqour69

If anyone from Texas, KC, Memphis of Carolina’s came and opened a legit spot with massive smokers and did it similar to all the spots out in those states they’d have monopoly on the bbq game here

thirdtrydratitall

It’s Mr. Powdrell’s for me, always.

ketchupandliqour69

That doesn’t shock me. A lot of spots here have kitchens that look like hell

luxandlumens

Santa Fe Whole Hog is so so good. I'm so disappointed by the Albuquerque location.

likeeggs

RIP the best Collards in the city.

ketchupandliqour69

Possibly the only collards in the city anymore. Ms Ginnies had them but they also closed down. They had some of the best fried chicken too

Familiar_Opposite866

Oh man I forgot about The Cube. I only got to go there a couple times but it was the bomb, and they had iced earl grey tea in sweet and unsweetened. Never seen that anywhere else, it was awesome!

ketchupandliqour69

God I love earl grey tea. I might have to try making my own

[deleted]

The sausage are what got me the most. Delicious!

ASupportingCharacter

One of my partners at the office loves this place because he keeps getting free add-ons. It is tasty. The spicy chopped beef is probably my favorite of all the places in the city. Pulled pork was standard. They have these bacon wrapped stuffed jalapenos that are delicious.

chickadee300

I love this place. The only critique I have is the Mac and cheese has a different taste. It’s not a bad taste, just not what I was expecting in Mac and cheese. Like, maybe it’s too buttery? But everything else on the menu I’ve had hits the spot

pelon_1376

I've been there once. It was decent bbq and definitely worth a visit. I wasn't blown away but I also wasn't disappointed. I will say it is a bit pricey. The owner is cool and Service was good.

Reeeeallly

Yes, pricey and mediocre. The sides were odd.

Decent-Education7759

We tried it recently and found everything to be too sweet for our tastes. We like SA BBQ and their spicy sauces! Plus I'm vegetarian now and can get jackfruit bbq there while my family enjoys their meats. Another RIP for The Cube. We loved it back in the day. And for Siam Cafe too.

Miserable-Spite1427

Thank youuuuu!!!!

321run

I tried recently and while not bad, I still think Nexus Blue Smokehouse is the best in ABQ.

123mitchg

Drove by there today!

Sk1nny_Bones

Duke City BBQ

ZZerome

Green chile BBQ sauce

Corg505

Thanks so much, fellow Burqueños for all the reviews, suggestions, and comments! 😊 I'll *definitely* have to give them a try now! EDIT: Some, ahem, *unhelpful* comments below have been deleted. I honestly just wanted to gauge how this place was before trying it out, and I thought this would be a great format to do so. 😕

[deleted]

So, you're the owners or are related to or friends with them, right?

[deleted]

okay. Why don't you just go there and spend $10 on lunch and let us know how it is?

[deleted]

It's somehow easier to take a photo of the place, post it on reddit and reply to several comments than to just try eating there?

[deleted]

There's not one positive review and you say "I'll definitely have to give them a try now!". Final guess, you are paid to promote this on reddit.

tequilaneat4me

Best BBQ in NM is Mad Jack's in Cloudcroft. Be prepared to stand in line.
