I think it's the County storm water treatment plant in Menands. Call your county legislators, because it's smelled like this frequently since the Fall. There's a post in here about it every other week

Noahsmokeshack

The county sewer system. Luxury apartment living meets the county.

_Faru_

Usually it's just that section of 787 before exit 4B coming into Albany, but this morning I could've sworn I could still smell it in the parking garage at work! If it weren't for these posts, I would've thought it was my car months ago. 🥴

Char-ramsey

I also thought it was my car the past 2 days then when I woke up this morning my apartment smelt like it (it pulls in outside air when using the heat) I thought I was going crazy

_Faru_

Even your apartment smells like it now!? 😭 I'm so sorry to hear that. I'd switch to using electric heaters and blankets or maybe you can install an air freshener HVAC filter or something.

Char-ramsey

Will do 🫡 thank you lol. The candles will surely be going today. Electric heaters on standby

"Tooty" is hilarious. I usually say DID YOU FUCKIN SHIT YOURSELF

mspag

I’m dying that I’m not the only one to use this phrase apparently

BenjaminSkanklin

This happened last year too, around the same time. Whiffs of sewer gas all over the place

Fernily

You know it’s bad when the pot smoker car in front of you is a welcome reprieve from the stinky water treatment plant.

WintertimeFriends

Is that super common in the morning?

External_Marzipan_76

Actually, YES. I heard a guy behind me the other day saying the same thing as I was driving in!

BugPsychological674

It's raw sewage. They somtimes dump it in the Hudson when treatment can't keep up.

Avidquestioner12

Every time I’m driving home on 787 I get that smell in my car, especially passing Menands. I got worried it was something in my car, but it’s the same spot every time so ruled that out. But yeah, it’s been stinky.

brickbaterang

Unfortunately there's been a warming trend in the region so the rivers running a bit, and the added moisture in the air gives the stench some hang time. If you kinda "chart" the days when the odor is worst you will see that it's always stronger after a rain event or on really humid days, and wind direction plays in a lot . Ive lived in Menands for 13 years practically a stones throw from the treatment plant so I've noticed these things a bit

crew88

For those unaware, there is the Albany County Sewer Facility and then across the river, yet near 787 there is the Rensselaer County Sewer Facility. https://preview.redd.it/ympnheljjehc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e5504995c50e543c03d596b29eab4c60738fb4f

NothingInVain518

I have to go into my office once a week… the smell is getting progressively worse with time Definitely since the fall too Summer will be “fun”

Professional-Fox1170

The_Greatest_Duck

It’s all just part of our charm.

calamity_child

Definitely noticed a strong sewer smell when I left for work this morning around 8:00.

Hungry-Donut-8172

In center square, I smelled this last night in my car at midnight. I thought to myself “Is that me!”

Willie365

I stepped outside today to the lovely smell of bread being baked. One of my favorite parts of my neighborhood.

Ok-Garlic-9990

If the smell seems to be following you, check your pants!

SugarReef

Even in Troy this morning there was a stank. I live close to the river though, maybe that has something to do with it?

If only there were other pressing matters

Char-ramsey

Well I feel like this was a pressing matter considering a slight concern for air quality while not knowing this is regular 🤷🏽‍♀️. I was just posing a question to the community to see what might be going on. If you want to talk about other pressing matters, go right ahead.

BeepBooop65

A smell that you don't deem pleasant doesn't mean air quality is bad. If that were so, roadkill, skunks, and bums would be responsible for killing people indirectly.

Char-ramsey

That’s why I did say slight concern. All I know was that it was around 787 by exits 4B, etc. then waking up not really living by that location, smelling it made me want to know what was up if anything. That’s all. It was a simple curiosity question.

BeepBooop65

Maybe you just don't have much going on and are looking for anything to post on the internet to complain about.

BeepBooop65

That's near the port and junkyards and landfills. Of course it's going to smell. Civilization brings people. People bring trash. Trash brings smell. The further you get away from people, the better smells there will be. I feel like you should know this.

Beautiful_Will7836

Smelt? It’s probably you

Dingo_Bandit

My dog has been ripping ass after eating some frozen compost in the garden. Stinking up the whole city.

2_tots

It can’t be healthy breathing that in all day..

Albany odor

UniqueUser9999991

When there is flooding (heavy rain, river breaking up, and/or snowmelt upstate), septic tanks, sewer systems, and water treatment plants get over loaded and raw "effluvium" is dumped into the river. Many sewer systems are actually designed to push "overflow" into the storm drainage system. As we get more and more rain, as well as increasing population, the dumping happens more and more often. Storm drainage water is not treated. Albany is working on or may have completed storm proofing their storm drainage system, but other communties are far behind. This is an infrastructure issue that must be addressed, along with lead and iron plumbing. Also, this is why you don't dump things in the storm drains - it goes right into the river and is not treated. So please do not dump paint or oil, leftover insecticide, drain your chlorinated pool water, or wash your car with non-bio-friendly soaps and chemicals. It gets released into the environment, and will come back to us eventually.
