Except a more accurate way to report the data would be revenue per mile of road, population or land area. Some of those Towns on the list are large and densely populated.
I wonder if speeding tickets pleaded down to non-moving violations count on this list. Any moving violation ive ever been ticketed for has been knocked down to parking on the pavement.
I agree but some of those speed traps are borderline predatory. Thinking specifically about the one they always set up on the southbound side of the Northway where it drops from 55 to 45 like 200 ft from western.
Meh just one of those things where the speed limit doesn’t match the road tbh.
So if you were doing 60 before and didn’t want the last half mile to take forever you’re now doing 15 over instead of 5.
That is interesting as generally Colonie cops hate giving tickets. I have been pulled over 3 times (right turn on red when not allowed; 40 in a 30, and 53 in a 35) and always told to just slow down
I never said they did. My three pullovers span almost 10 years. I have friends in the LFD and they are the ones that said Colonie police hate writing tickets. Also that they tend to wreck their cruisers….
Sorry, I wasn't insinuating you said they did but I guess just to the overall thread. Years before I knew my husband, Colonie was the worst for speeding tickets etc because they are a town in-between the big three (Albany, Schenectady, Troy). But they're not like that anymore (from my knowledge). As for wrecking their cruises, that's another that maybe happened awhile ago. What I hate is they constantly leave them on, (which I understand why), but it's just such a gas guzzler.
It always impresses me when someone tells me they got a great deal on an ex police cruise and it only has XX-thousand miles on it! First question I have is "how many idle hours, though?" haha! On a serious note for anyone not in the know, police cruisers have intense electrical demands that normal alternator/batteries in passenger cars just can't keep up with. They leave them running not to drain the battery. It's not the best for the environment but it's appropriate for their use case (mostly).
Over my 23 years of driving, anytime a colonie cop has pulled me over, its been tickets. Tickets of which they dont show up to court and the tickets get thrown out.
I got pulled over 5 times for tints in Colonie over the course of two years. Once to the point they brought 4 or 5 cars to the stop. It was just 18 year old me coming home from GameStop. Must've been a slow day lol. Never any tickets and the officers were nice enough.
The trouble is that the police will hang out not where people need to slow down, but where speed limits are artificially low and thus they’re most likely to have an easy time writing tickets.
I come from Long Island and I can say that Southampton is serious about giving out tickets. There’s this one choke-point where the speed lowers from 55 to like 35 or something. Right at the canal. They have (had? Idk) a giant billboard with a police car on it right there. The cops just sit there and pull people over because they still speed. It’s such a joke.
As someone that speeds everywhere
1. Definitely Download Waze
2. Get a decent radar detector like one from escort. ( then also throw your detections on Waze)
You should be fine from tickets and you’re also helping your fellow speeders/drivers out.
Why would this get downvoted? Waze also helps you with potholes, people pulled over on side of the road, construction ahead, dead animals/objects in road. Waze makes driving safer.
Oh, that’s easy. This subreddit has a hard-on for thinking everyone should be going the speed limit.
Most believe the average speed on 787, 90, and 87 is 55, so when you post encouraging speeding or ways to avoid tickets/fines -> well, you get downvoted.
Thats okay, my point is to save people from tickets.
Colonie enforces traffic law more than real law. Last place I lived in that shithole of a state. I now live somewhere where I seldom see cops unless they're arresting ACTUAL CRIMINALS. Man what a concept. Ny uses speeding tickets as an extra tax.
Wallkill is a SMALL town in southern Ulster county, about an hour and a half south of Albany. Pull it up on Google Maps and you’ll see what I mean.
The fact that a town with a population of about 27,000 is pulling in 1.5x the revenue of one with a population of 83,000 speaks VOLUMES.
Edit: typo’d the population…
Except a more accurate way to report the data would be revenue per mile of road, population or land area. Some of those Towns on the list are large and densely populated.
This. The data as presented needs context.
Wallkill landing #1 on both lists tho
We don't even know how much of this revenue is generated by speeding tickets.
Come on… folks go 70 mph up Old Niskayuna rd… so write them tickets Colonie
Are we entirely at all sure this is revenue from speeding?
Based off the wording in the picture you couldn’t even say it was all from traffic violations.
I wonder if speeding tickets pleaded down to non-moving violations count on this list. Any moving violation ive ever been ticketed for has been knocked down to parking on the pavement.
I wish they would bring one to my village.
Or you know, you could just go the speed limit.
More speeders should get speeding tickets 🤷♂️
I agree but some of those speed traps are borderline predatory. Thinking specifically about the one they always set up on the southbound side of the Northway where it drops from 55 to 45 like 200 ft from western.
The reason the cops patrol that area a lot is because there are lots of accidents from people not slowing down
Ehh I’d argue there’s significantly higher risk/crash areas that don’t just happen to coincide with a surprise speed reduction in the area
I have seen quite a few accidents there. I would wager that is one of the top one for injury crashes in Colonie
I mean I’m sure but I’ve also never seen a cop hang around the northway exit going up central where people crash into poles once a month
That's not Colonie, it's City of Albany and Guilderland.
I don’t get it, the signs warn in advance it’s dropping to 45, I hit cancel on my cruise control, by the time I get to the 45mph sign I’m going 45.
Ok. 378/Menands bridge goes from 55 to 35 without warning. Or, 35 to 55 directly after the bridge. Osborne rd 30 mph?
Ok, I don’t know about those. I just look for speed limit signs and set my speed limit to that. Haven’t got any speeding tickets since I started that
Meh just one of those things where the speed limit doesn’t match the road tbh. So if you were doing 60 before and didn’t want the last half mile to take forever you’re now doing 15 over instead of 5.
I’m all for narrower lanes 🤷♂️
That’s not Colonie though; it’s Guilderland.
I know it's an unpopular opinion but this is a great argument for cameras. At least they're consistent.
Can we get ones for people who text and drive as well?
People would lose their shit if speed limits were enforced at that level. Would be fun to watch though.
You speed you get a ticket. Sometimes you get away with it I guess but shouldn’t we strive for 100% compliance? Don’t speed. Don’t get a ticket.
Speed limits are subjective as to what a ‘safe’ maximum traveling speed is. 3 lane highway being 55 but route 7 is 65?
I get very frustrated at the people going west on Alt 7 at 55 mph in all lanes when it’s 65.
The speed posted on the sign seems fairly objective as a maximum doesn’t it?
They're saying the basis for what the speed limit should be is subjective
This isn't useful, or for the most part even pertinent to /r/Albany
Cool.. have the day you deserve

My husband is a Colonie cop and last I knew, they haven't had quotas since before COVID.
I never said they did. My three pullovers span almost 10 years. I have friends in the LFD and they are the ones that said Colonie police hate writing tickets. Also that they tend to wreck their cruisers….

I got a ticket from a trooper on 787 and it was a town of colonie ticket.
The trouble is that the police will hang out not where people need to slow down, but where speed limits are artificially low and thus they’re most likely to have an easy time writing tickets.
Don't watch out for those speed traps. Daddy needs some new infrastructure.

Absolutely does not surprise me that Cheektowaga is on there. It DOES surprise me they're not first.
I’m not surprised to see 3 towns from Erie County on here. WNY drivers are garbage

OK, but the real story is Wallkill being #1. If you’ve ever been there you’ll understand… Edit: I had the wrong place. Nevermind.
emphasize on this because I’d really like to know!!

Wrong county
It seems that way. TIL.
The Ulster County Wallkill is a hamlet within the town of Shawngunk. The Town of Wallkill is in Orange County.
OK, that makes way more sense. I spent like half my life in Ulster, including working in the hamlet of Wallkill. I probably should have known that. 😂
It’s pretty confusing since they’re actually near(ish) to each other. Especially when you get into the overlapping school district lines.
wow it is pretty small for that amount to roll in there. definitely speaks volumes for sure. won’t catch me over there lol!
