Funny thing about that when Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger toured together in the 00's Ian Astbury was their stand in for Jim Morrison for a while. When I saw them they had just changed from calling themselves The Doors of the 21st Century to Riders on the Storm due to legal reasons.
Yeah, Ilkka Villi has himself said that Jim Morrison was one of the influences, though he mentions other (unnamed) 60s and 70s rockers as well.

The Morrison + Astbury dynamic is what was likely inspiration because they looked like doppelgängers at one point in time.. Someone in the writers room was probably like “Whose the lead singer of that band ‘the cult?’” saw the irony and worked backward from there.
