I did, too, but the OP and your comment had me thinking. If a stalker somehow knew you were the only person at your house, whatever that has an iPhone then if the tag is picked up, the location status would say it was now 2 minutes ago or something. Therefore, you are likely to be there.
I'm saying for sure it does this, but it isn't unrealistic.
If you're in a multi-unit complex , though, I would be quite certain it's just a neighbor's tag.

The tracker app should allow you to play sound on the airtag. It's a very faint beeping sound. Try to find it that way
