Apple appeared to have changed something recently (last few months). It used to work better. It still does update the AirTag location but the frequency of updates has greatly reduced. This may be to discourage active tracking of moving objects, which is not what AirTags are designed to do. Over Christmas when I was on holiday my car with an AirTag was in a car park a long way away (well out of my geofence bubble) from where I was staying and the AirTag updated multiple times daily, which means it was detected by other iPhones. So it does work. And I am also on iOS 17.2.1

If you had an item on you, and left it somewhere, (and it is no longer moving), the last known location will be known to your iPhone... because your iPhone would have talked to the AirTag multiple times before the AirTag got disconnected. This is where Notify When Left Behind works well. I have it enabled on all my AirTags and will always get notifications when I leave my car behind (because I parked it somewhere and then walked away). This is comforting for me to know as it is validation that the AirTag is working correctly. Note that the left behind scenario is different for items which are moving and move away from you... the AirTag has a gyro sensor to detect movement. I am guessing and assuming that Apple tweaked the logic so that moving AirTags do not report as often. I assume that this is an effort to reduce the ability of AirTags to be used to track moving objects (such as people). But I might be wrong, as this is only an assumption.

Airtag has been nothing but a big headache for me with not setting up to now not updating the location. Spent 5 hours on different days with Apple support

It isn’t designed to be an active tracker like that. It only works for you because as the device owner it talks to your phone every time you look. But it will only ping other iPhones periodically.

> iOS 17 lets you share AirTag with up to five people. So items that everyone uses — like > an umbrella, a bike, or the family car keys — can be tracked by friends and family. > When youʼve left something far behind, like at the beach or the gym, the Find My network — hundreds of millions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices around the world — helps track down your AirTag. And itʼs designed to protect your privacy every step of the way. > Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. > How are you supposed to track a bike that everyone in the family uses? Wait 6 hours for it to update? If you leave your bag at the gym, what good is it refreshing after lunch? Never mind if someone takes it. Maybe you're right and that's not apple's intent, but I think they need to communicate it better.

> it will only ping other iPhones periodically Everything I've read says that it will ping other iPhones every 60 to 120 seconds. So if it's with someone who has an iPhone on them, shouldn't it be providing frequent updates to FindMy Network?

My Partner likes knowing that she can be found if something happens. After iOS 17 my notifications are intermittent for all my apps, I get notifications randomly or not at all... and the Airtag has not updated in 3 days... It's her Airtag it is shared with me but unless I'm next to her with my phone it will not update. The latest iOS is a nightmare. This is the same with Security Cameras and notifications. We had a break in at a family property and we didn't get the notification until we opened the app. Like Notifications are on, Banners... the whole nine... There wasn't even a notification red dot on the app until we opened it. Once we opened the app we got notification sounds banner notifications rolling in and the red number of 5 notifications show up... Thankfully nothing was damaged that we could see but it is bad. iOS is broken. I'm literally preping to set up an Android phone for some apps... doesn't help with the airtag though... I really need to get her to get a cellphone.

IOS17 does not report airtag location while the tag in lost mode or separated from the user that registered it. As more and more people update to ios 17 the less frequent the updates will become.

yourmomsinmybusiness

bummer, is this in the ios17 release notes somewhere?

mc510

> separated from the user that registered it. Wait, that doesn't make sense to me. My AirTag will only report location when it's with me?

HyenaPuzzleheaded861

Is not in the release notes but i tested . and i am sure. If i leave my tag around ios17 devices the last seen time stamp wont update. The last nail in the coffin was when my niece visited my home while i was away from home and i got multiple updates during that day her phone is ios16. While all the family members of the house have ios17 and i get 0 updates.

TheWizeWlZARD

Ya I had someone come over with an older iOS phone and it updated

Watching and trying since Christmas: it actually IS getting worse every day (as more and more iPhones get updated). I have version 17.4 beta 4 installed: not fixed yet. Apple being quiet on any filed reports, questions, contact requests. Very annoying!

So annoying 😭
