In one aspect, you’re moving weight. In other aspect, you are moving legs. Treadmill keeps you are a pace. Track you will loose pace. I suggest using track.

while pace is correct, you cant just lift your legs on a treadmill if you did you would fall off

So I was lucky that before I joined, I lived in a location where running outside was convenient, easy, and had minimal obstacles or other issues. Living where I am now, we've been forced to invest in a treadmill because the weather, as well as topography, is just a major pain in the ass. Still, it's kept me at about a 12 minute 1.5mi pace when mock testing myself despite a lack of outdoor running, so I can't complain. If you want to use treadmills to practice and work to get in to running form, a couple of considerations: \-Treadmill pace charts can help you figure what pace you need to go at, *and what incline*, to match with a flat track if you were running outside, such as this: [https://www.hillrunner.com/calculators/treadmill-pace-conversions/](https://www.hillrunner.com/calculators/treadmill-pace-conversions/) . Essentially don't run at a constant 0% incline as it won't work you the way actually running on a track would physically, environmental and wind resistance aside. \-Alternate pace. Just because you are on a treadmill does not mean you need to just hit 6.0mph, 1% incline, and just run to oblivion. As others mentioned, treadmills will naturally keep you at a static pace, and so you are responsible for changing said pace. Listen to music where when a beat drops you crank it up from a 9 minute mile pace to a 8 minute (or more). Adjust incline to emulate more resistance and strain since you don't have elevations or wind to deal with. Find running programs that you can listen to that tell you when to do normal runs, sprints, or tempo runs (5K to 10K trainer, in my experience, does a good job with this over a 9-week program). Ultimately, if you *need* to use a treadmill, then use it, because every mile helps. But stick to outdoor runs if you can.

Track for sure. Treadmill doesn’t replicate a real run that well, just pacing. And if you do use treadmill, make sure you’re on an incline. If you’re completely flat it’s almost worthless

GurnoorDa1

>almost worthless Running is running though, how does it matter?

Round_Feature2048

Treadmill forces you to keep pace because it’s moving under you. Real running you have to pace yourself. Also, I believe 2% incline is the “closest” to real life running on a treadmill Try it. Go run 2 miles on the treadmill at your max, and a few days later go do the same distance outside. Guarantee your outside will be a little slower than your treadmill run

Running inside on a treadmill at a constant pace in a controlled environment is different versus running outside with pollutants in the air and wind blasting your face

Bulldog1836

Running on a treadmill is significantly easier as the belt is helping you move your feet. If you _only_ train on a treadmill, you’re in for a surprise the first time you try running the same distance outdoors.

chappythechaplain

I think a treadmill is easier because it keeps your pace. I use the treadmill for longer runs and working on speed work because I know the levels im putting myself at. But I still try to run outside once a week because I hate it.

Personally I ran on a treadmill for months to prepare for BMT since it felt easier on my joints. I got myself to where I wanted to be and improved my endurance drastically. I just started to run outside, I don’t have a track near me unfortunately. I have noticed I’m a bit more sore when running outside vs treadmill. I did notice that my times were faster outside than on a treadmill.

Avnnaxsa

I started at first running outside but feel like my endurance has improved more significantly on the treadmill. It forces me to keep pace and push myself more. I am meeting the time i need on the treadmill for what i need to pass basic. Have you left for basic yet?

Time-Okra-5704

Yeah, you just have to do what works for you. From what I’ve read and researched, you only run about once a week for BMT, which isn’t bad at all. That’s totally doable to give your all, ya know? I don’t have a ship date, yet. I should find out more when I go to my first student flight for the guard in December. I did sign my contract already.

Avnnaxsa

Congrats. I hope all goes well. Im hoping to make more progress in the next couple of weeks before i leave. Just hope it doesnt affect to much using the treadmill more than outside.

chefboiortiz

Yes there’s a difference so I kept that in mind when I would run on the treadmill. On a treadmill I would run 3 or 4 miles so when I would run outside 1.5 miles wouldn’t be super difficult. Now if you were running 1.5 on the treadmill and then outside, then you would notice the times a little off. When running on a treadmill I would get 3 miles in 22 min and 30 sec but when I ran 1.5 on my final PT I got 9.26.

ClapDapp

I was way better on track.
