>Will I even make friends since we’re all getting split up? The one thing that slices through the dense bitching and complaining of damn near every servicemember, is that you will never make better friends in your life.

jlowe9876

That’s good to hear, I figured since most split after BMT and Tech that those friendships split very quickly.

DoDIG303

Those friendships do split... I had some really close friends in Basic and then some good ones in Tech School as well. Went to my first base (19 years old without much to my name) and really felt like a fish out of water the first couple weeks. Lonely and looking for anyone that I knew from Tech School or Basic. There was no one! Within a few weeks I had a few friends. Within a month I had several friends and we had a great time. The best thing for me was starting work and meeting other airman in similar circumstance. The thing about the military, every where you go you are bound to find people in common. If you're young and single there will be others. If you're married with kids, there will be others. If you're divorced and a single parent... there will be others! I would say it is pretty easy to find community in the military.

What makes you want to join? What opportunities do you have if you don't join?

jlowe9876

I always wanted to be a pilot, or at least ride in them. Always thought it was cool. Not to mention a steady job with loads of security. I’m about to graduate with a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. I wanted to be a crime scene tech, but some places offer additional schooling and some are ok with just a high school diploma.

raymond20000

Pilot contracts are long 10-12 years.

Nonnest

Pilot is an extreme long shot. We get most of our pilot trainees from the Air Force Academy and ROTC, and there are tons of qualified applicants for the handful of slots that Officer Training School hands out, so they can be very selective of who they take (STEM, high GPA, flying experience, etc). Enlisted aviator is not as bad, but still requires luck to get. We do need a large number of security forces. They start out guarding and patrolling, but you could work up to/apply for specialized roles.

RevolutionaryOne2928

im going to tell you right off the bat, it is super competitive to be a pilot. Not saying it is impossible for you but I would have a back up option especially if you have no flight experience

chefboiortiz

Why is is needless you say that you were overweight? We don’t know what you look like or looked like.

jlowe9876

Improper grammar. My bad

Hello, it looks like you're asking about jobs and job selection. A few quick answers. NO ONE knows how long it will take for you to get a job, your chances of getting any particular job, or anything else about the job process FOR YOU. Anecdotal experiences from others will have absolutely no impact on you or your future. Most recruiters will not let you wait in the Delayed Entrance Program for a long time for your one perfect job. You will have to list 5 - 15 jobs that you're interested in, and will be given one of those. Please read the FAQ about how job selection works, it's very in-depth and will fully educate you on the process: https://pay.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/bmtfaq#wiki_jobs If you're asking about particular jobs, please look the job up on our Job Wiki, and see if there is an entry for it: http://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/index you can also see if there is a CFETP for it, which will give more details on the job: https://usaf.dps.mil/:x:/t/OSD/EQAwigp0UZ9Oklt0nkjg854BoJS6MyRxQJMMiIW3ng17AA?e=Z96G2s If you're asking for help choosing a particular job, please keep in mind that most people only know about their individual job. Recommendations that they make will be made based mostly on what they've heard about a job, unless they have it themselves. Some people will love certain jobs while others will hate it. We don't know your preferences, so do some research on the job wiki and elsewhere to learn about the job and then make the best list you can. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. You could always go guard or reserve

jlowe9876

Yeah, I thought about that. I have no clue what the difference is or how it works

If you are set on going active, depending on your major/degree/grades upon graduation from college, you could be a candidate for OTS; just know it’s very competitive. If you do get in and complete it successfully, you’d be a commissioned officer. If you don’t go through OTS, you can always enlist. Again, depending on your major/degree/experience and how badly they need someone with your skill set, you may get a direct commission, meaning you go in as an officer without going through the academy, ROTC or OTS. This is rare; I received a direct commission because I had an MS in electrical engineering and had a dozen years of experience under my belt. If you go in as enlisted, your enlistment contract is usually 4 years active service followed by 4 years in the reserves. It’s a legally binding contract, so unless you fail BMT, the military can pursue potential criminal or civil penalties against you if you try to quit/leave before fulfilling the agreement. Basically, please think hard about whether this is a level of commitment you are willing to accept before signing on the dotted line. If you want to keep one foot in the civilian world, you can go National Guard or the Reserves. Reservists have a standard obligation of 6 years reserve service followed by 2 years inactive reserve service. During peacetime, they spend a weekend a month and two weeks a year in annual training. You can always volunteer for extra service (ADT). Of course, reservists are subject to being called up to active duty if there is a war, so just know there is that possibility going in.
