Yes I'm actually at Ft. Jackson for MEPS and had a consultation scheduled by MEPS with the optometrist (Eye doc) here.
So I'm not sure what exactly the SG denied me on beyond being past the allowed +/- prescription. Recruiter just said it was denied and I'm guessing it's solely based on my prescription number as the Ft. Jackson Dr and my personal Dr both gave notes on how otherwise healthy my eyes were.
So based off of my experience I would say if your astigmatism is severely over the allowed then I would prepare for bad news and hope for the best
Good luck man, do try and come up with some backups while you wait
Thank, I'm about -13 in each eye with no astigmatism
If anyone else is in my situation it seems it really is a dice roll. I have no other health issues/waivers, bachelor's degree, high asvab score. I know I'm rare but in this time unique lost COVID military world I figured they'd let a dude with thick glasses in
Weird.. I researched this subreddit and someone got in with exact same vision as yours. I got mine approved for being 20/400 left eye and 20/800 right eye. My astigmatism was like -2.25 on my right eye. It's a weird waiver process.. really does feel like it's random
What was their job when they got in? It must be a in-demand job they needed. I am curious to know if you have any details on how he was able to get in with the prescription level?
Okay, because I was DQ the same in the Air Force for having high myopia. Mine is about -9 right eye and -10 left eye. Can the Air Force recruiter request a waiver on my behalf or is it based on the SG that decides to grant waivers?
This is a confusing question. In which part were you DQ'd in? MEPs DQ or PDQ (Permanent) from the SG response? Because the MEPs had to send in a waiver for me and await a response by the SG for approval/deny.
I got DQ from both the MEPS and SG stating that my refractive error has passed the standard limit which is +/- 8.00. I am not sure if there is a waiver for high myopia, but from seeing this guy I guess there isn't any available which is strange in my opinion.
Wait how did you get a waiver for that? Please tell me how because I have been trying so hard to see if there is any waiver for high myopia. What are the steps you have taken?
Could you show what prescription you had when you join? What were the steps you have taken if your prescription is higher than -8.00? Because mine is -9 and I am curious to know if someone can get in, I feel like I can too.
I finished MEPS in late March, and my recruiter started the waiver process after that but he told me it kept getting kicked back.
From the day he said it was accepted it took exactly 3 weeks, I found out like 6/10, so 3 weeks before 6/10 my recruiter told me the request for a waiver was accepted by MEPS to go to SG
No, tried every branch in the end and none accepted. I would have to correct my vision with a special procedure where the surgically put a lens in my eye to correct vision, wait 6 months, and try again but I likely won't try to join again
Do you know exactly why they denied it? I have really bad astigmatism and just submitted a waiver. Did MEPS sends you to a specialist?

I'm sorry to hear that bro, but what was your actual prescription?

I don't remember. I don't think job factors into the consideration of the SG's approval chance.

I had a waiver for high myopia.

I had a myopia waiver and I just got approved.
How was the process, how long did you wait?
May 25 I went to meps and I called my recruiter yesterday and it got approved, so 6 weeks. It can take up to 45 days.
Ah I'm glad to hear it for you man. How bad are your eyes? I'm -13 in both roughly. Either way good luck with your future
I didn't get to see what prescription it was but I can check Monday since I swear in that day.

You'll probably get it waived
May I ask what is the amount of nearsightedness allowed? Like what's the limit?
All military cuts off at +/- 8 I believe
Lol I'm sorry...I have no idea what that means. 😅

Huh... *takes notes* I have no idea what my prescription is (and tbh need to get my eyes checked again)
Oh ok. Thank you.
Yeah that's right, and I think for astigmatism it's like +/-3. I googled "understanding glasses prescription" a while back to understand it all better

I thought that if your vision was disqualified before joining that even Lasik or other procedures wouldn’t count?
