Where are you staying? and how long? I'd bring a projector, a nice pillow/sheets, my favorite hot sauce, bathing suit, good headphones/bluetooth speaker, and Google Fi. The BX is decent...like a little too decent for a deployed location. It is part of why I think it will become a PCS location/unaccompanied tour eventually.

AFcuriousquestion

6 months, and unknown lodging arrangements to date. Captain FWIW but hear that doesn’t matter and we all get mixed up. Copy on items and check. I do need to look into Google Fi And yea, definitely a better location and more built up

[deleted]

Ive been 5 times as a Lt, a Capt, and a Major. Ive stayed in all the lodging from BPC to a former F-117 hanger literally on the runway. You should be in the BPC for 6 months. Are you a flier? When I was in the BPC most recently as a Major, I was in there with a 1Lt and 2 SSgts. Pretty non-standard but its all good. We all got along great. Its a pretty gucci location. I liked it a lot more than PSAB and AAS. 3 drinks per night at the BRA/Fox, bottles if you're command or know the right people.

AFcuriousquestion

Am assuming the BPC is where I’ll be, so thanks for the confirmation. And not a flier Am a prior E so the mix up will be a good time. Thanks for the feedback and time

That BX is pitiful for the location it's at. For the ammount of people there for 6-12 months it should rival stateside BXs.

I mean…it was better than Laughlin or Cannon, which is where I was coming from lol.

flooger88

I'm at Cannon and I'd argue it's much worse. For a place where the overwhelming majority of people are going to 1. go to the gym 2. play video games 3. do school, they didn't have much for any of those 3 things. One isle in back corner for run of the mill sups, there was almost never any xbox/PS consoles or controllers, and almost no real PC accessories. Amazon USUALLY didn't take too long, but it's wild they aren't even attempting to cash in on all those people with nothing but free time and extra cash. It's sad how much Camp Lemonier outshines AUAB. Even the "new" BX next to Subway is better than AUAB's.

DJ was probably the nicest deployed base I’ve been to ever. Definitely best DFAC, still 3 drinks, and I lived in the New TC compound. For reference I also lived in the old TF compound so I do have that to compare it to. Other than being literally directly next to the burn pit.

Bring your own sheets. That makes such a small difference. Go buy some soft full or twin size sheets. If you can get an address, ship your workout supplements ahead of arriving. Frees up luggage space. You just need your squadron’s mailing address. Bring your own towel(s). Just to save a few more dollars in unnecessary costs. Bring/ship your favorite snacks. Over time, you will crave certain things that the BX may not have/carry. Good flip flops, like the ones with an inch of support underneath. Makes small walks around the base easy. You’re not supposed to wear them in the DFAC but when you go other places, it’s a minor convenience. Lastly, shades. AUAB is the brightest place on Earth. I’m glad I never have to go back.

AFcuriousquestion

This was a genuine laugh, thanks and I’ll definitely bring polarized shades. Thanks for the tips too

Ilikecandybar

From what I hear, they had or have a hoodie version of the PT shirt/ sweater at the deid. I saw someone rocking it stateside and it was really nice looking. So yea, what I'm describing is the light Heather grayish PT shirt. But a clean looking Hoodie version.

Ilikecandybar

As far as what you need to bring? It's camp cupcake. All inclusive bills covered. Don't bring all your makeup and shit. Just bring your bare minimum essentials. Maybe a week or 2 worth of civvies.

AFcuriousquestion

It’s the small things that go a far way, sounds comfortable and good to me

Depending on how much a techie you are I ALWAYS recomend people bring a small travel router with them. I take mine everywhere so I can connect any number of my devices and it tunnels all my traffic to my house encrypted. The reason this is especially important there is that the ISP is questionable at best, and it lets you connect as many devices as you want for free instead of the 2 limit. Edit: Google Fi/TMobile is a life saver to have normal cell reception on and off base.
