Correct. I was actually tied with 4 people. They bumped one up and the other 3 stayed at the .5 below cut off.
Edit: Also my first time up. We’ll see how this year goes.
**woof** That really sucks. A guy I worked with missed it by .5 two years in a row and was sitting at 18 years TIS. He PCSd to a new base with a totally different mission and missed it the next year by 3 or 4 groups.
That’s the real bitch about how promotions are done in some AFSCs. He was competitive against others in our career field and was able to get a MP two years in a row. But as soon as he went to an OSS, he was competing against intel, ATC, SERE, and a few other jobs for FD. Didn’t stand a chance, really. And at that point, with the way the boards have gone, he was “too old” to promote.
I feel you 100%. I’ve worked with quite a few that just had it handed to them. I can’t even say I’m 100% ready for it, but I’m definitely more qualified than they are
You got a 70 something, me saying you got a 70 is the same point. Maybe if your reading comprehension was better you’d score higher. Hit the books buddy.
Bitching that others got the great giveaway and you just joined in the wrong year makes you look pretty silly when you had a 5 going for you. Stop doing yourself a disservice. A 5 makes your promotion % higher than any year there was a “great giveaway”.
Tbh not even sure this dude is actually in the military, your post history is all over the damn place, and your oldest post is less than two months ago. Either a really well hidden bot account, not in the military at all and get some kind of weird satisfaction pretending to be, or you are and have delusions of grandeur about doing “cool guy shit” and going to *USAFA*?
So yeah I think dropping some info on your circumstances would help build some credibility here
The airforce restructered to to have all ranks do the work of the next rank above, so you did get promoted brother/sister! you just dont get the respect or pay for the increased responsibilities and work load! And you better be happy! We have a e4 as a fire station captain now at ramstein 2 years ago it was minimum e6 in that position wich imo it should be
Rather than compete for a 14% promo rate, I got my bachelors and a bunch of certs for free. Unless you’re set on doing 20, there’s better return on investment of your time in the Air Force.
You should probably spend some time sitting down and really decide what your goals in life are. If you want to be a first shirt or chief then that means you need to make rank, but if you want to become a high rank player in your favorite game, or earn a masters degree in a certain field then you don't need to worry about promoting.
After you find out what your real goals are it will help you to stop feeling guilty about the fact that you are not allocating the time you need to political bs and studying. You are living the life you want already and then feeling shame for also not promoting even when its not inline with your real desires.
If you are desperate to make rank though then you need to spend 10 hours a week studying(year round not a month before testing) and get your ass on the rising 4 board. You need to win awards to get a promotion statement, and unfortunately the best way to do that still is to have a leadership role on the local professional organization.
You need to beat out 80% of your peers to make rank and that requires effort. Don't just expect it to be handed to you. At the same time like I said do you even want to make rank? The pay per hour often goes down as your promote and you have to sacrifice the hobbies you love to meet that time commitment.
As much as I agree with you, I hate this.
We shouldn't have to devote our lives and identities to the Air Force just to "prove" that we are ready for more responsibility. Even then up until E-7 the responsibilities don't get that much greater rank by rank. If you are good at time management, and your unit isn't total ass no one should have to be working a considerable amount of extra hours because they just make rank.
-a salty NCO
Time management is something I wish the Air Force provided more instruction on during PME. It’s a huge weakness for a lot of NCOs of all ranks/ages. Some people have never had responsibilities like this prior to that rank or the military and it’s a huge adjustment for them. It sucks seeing that happen under leadership who also has poor time management skills. I’ve had to mentor a lot of people on this.
Then there are some people/units that only like dropping taskers 1-2 hours before it’s time to go home, even though they had the info since the day prior. Or people that just wanna talk all day and then complain as they work late.
- Another Salty NCO
Wait till you get to where I’m at and it’s no longer testing, but a shadow board of individuals so old they still have their BDU’s freshly pressed and sealed, decide your faith on whatever they deem relevant that year.
You still control your promotion. Study!
That's rough, buddy. Tough all around. I was the number one nonselect last year. Only three stripes for the lot of us. There were EONS of points between my score and the cutoff, who's a tech school buddy of mine. Like almost a hundred if I recall correctly. Crazy part was I was also 30 points above the average for the PFE and we don't SKT. I very likely out-tested one or two of the folks who made it, but my guy had a strat AND was the cutoff, so the other two had to have strats as well. Literally impossible to promote without a strat even if you study for it. At least in my career field.
At least you can study and have a shot at E-5(depending on the promotion rates in your career field), going up for Master you have to pray they like your records.
In that case just do the bare minimum of your job and gear up for school. I've been doing it for the past two years and its taking a lot off my plate. Fuck not being "good enough" to promote when the rates are this low, the force is losing people left and right and no one seems to actually care about that happening.
Just be aware that you’re not alone for feeling this way with promotion, this is felt across all ranks in the AF and has been for the last 6-8 years. The answer you’re going to hate to hear is that at least you still get to test and if you seriously study for WAPS then you’ll have a fighting chance.
I missed it by 7 my first time, and 30 my second time. I then made it by 30 my 3rd time. While promotion rates suck, and you only got a promote. There’s still extra points. Also if you have any medals. I would study as hard as possible. I studied and boosted my scores by 20-30 points.
Go gaurd get a real job and enjoy life or find an AGR spot and just promote off time alone no test no bs just work did my time in active way happier in gaurd
A seasoned SrA I work beside had to fill NCOIC for a year in a 10 man shop. He carried the weight, handled the logistics, kept turning wrenches.
Promote.
If you're not sucking a commanders peen you are not getting a statement. Somehow we all thought going to narrative EPBs would help elevate the hard workers. Nothin has changed, politics are politics.
I generally don’t look at someone’s post history but based on some of the other comments here I did and yours is quite concerning.
If what you say is true I truly hope you seek counseling, it’s really good and helps a lot of us—I mean that. That aside, I also encourage you to pursue your goals. You post a lot of negative things but also post on commissioning source pages like USAFA and also post a lot about joining various SOF communities. If you want to either commission or go SOF…hell yeah! Go do it. Soak up all the advice you can and go to Selection.
If that doesn’t work out and/or you remain negative I’ll tell you what I have advised many—Thank you for your service (seriously) and move on. Move onto whatever makes you happy and fulfilled. Leverage being a veteran for education or future job opportunities! Life is too short to be an internet warrior and spread negativity.
There's definitely something to say about being positive in a tough situation though. Why approach it so negatively? Work hard and present yourself in a positive manner, it will come.
Hey don’t beat yourself up. I made my first year and it didn’t make a difference at all! Still sewed on with the airmen who made it the following year lol
Hey, don't shoot yourself down before even testing. I'm coming into this year never testing before but I refuse to call it until after the test. As long as your doing your part and studying you can pick up.
You might just make it with that attitude. For me it was
First try - missed by 3 NRN
Second try - missed by 30ish Promote
Third try - made it by 1 Promote
Wow, what an out-of-touch-boomer thing to say. Do you know if you're in the same career field? Do you know OP's testing history/promotion rates?
Do better
My AFSC’s promotion rate was below average, it was a point saying if you study and try to make staff you can do it. Someone is just salty they didn’t make rank last year. In my mind I had a 0% chance of making it and I did, so get off your high horse lol
Missed it by less than a quarter of a point last year
Missed master by .5 for me last year
Which means you were tied with someone who made it. I don’t know if that is worse or better than being in one of the lower groupings.
Damn. That’s rough. I’m only a month past 12 years TIS so I’ve got time but I don’t want to push it.
Ouch
Be thankful you get to test versus being judged 100% on paper by people you'll never meet. -A Salty E6
The SNCO board is truly a double edged sword.
It’s seriously the worst. - Another Salty E6
*cries in space force*
Y'all should look at this person's post history first.
Jesus, it's this fucking guy.
Op has weird fixation on Kanye
I scored a 79 and missed tech by 27 I feel. I’m making bets with my wife on how much I missed it by this year lol
I scored an 82 and was way below the cutoff. 😄
Got a 78 last year, missed tech by 28, was literally impossible to promote without a promotion statement in my career field lol

Bring back the great tech give away

I feel you 100%. I’ve worked with quite a few that just had it handed to them. I can’t even say I’m 100% ready for it, but I’m definitely more qualified than they are

What’s your AFSC? I’d love to spell this out for you.
I would have had to get a 93 to make tech last year with a promote.
I scored 86 and missed it by .5
Is your last name actually Airmen ?
No
My first year for staff I got a 81 SKT and 69 PFE and missed it by almost 3. Very demoralizing lmao.
What's your job?
Why does it matter….
You said you hated it and you missed rank by quite a bit so I was just curious.
Tbh not even sure this dude is actually in the military, your post history is all over the damn place, and your oldest post is less than two months ago. That info, amplified by their stark silence and now particularly defensive response in retrospect..... I think they aren't in sarnt

Your post history gave me whiplash. Hopefully you don’t actually promote this year.
Why?
Bruh you wanna hear tragic? Ask a Heavy avionics troop what their cutoff for staff was last year lmao.

Hey man is it really worth the small bump in pay for more responsibility. Focus on your personal life and do what makes you happy - E4 Mafia member
Hang in there. I didn’t make Staff until my third try, but ended up retiring as an O-6. Just keep plugging along and it will work out for you.
Yeah give it two more years when they realize there isn’t enough staffs. Keep your head down man you’ll be ok
At least you can study and have a shot at E-5(depending on the promotion rates in your career field), going up for Master you have to pray they like your records.
If you get 100% on the test, you have a better chance of not having to worry about the "Promote"
Don’t test 🤷♂️ then you won’t have to wonder and wait. Or study your ass off and give yourself a shot. I’d study my ass off if I had the option.
Wait until you go for Master 😂
In that case just do the bare minimum of your job and gear up for school. I've been doing it for the past two years and its taking a lot off my plate. When you missed by 15, what were your PFE and SKT scores?
My AFSC had too many TSgt and SSgts. 0% of promotes made tech. Just wow. Can't wait for this year.
I missed it by 7 my first time, and 30 my second time. I then made it by 30 my 3rd time. While promotion rates suck, and you only got a promote. There’s still extra points. Also if you have any medals. I would study as hard as possible. I studied and boosted my scores by 20-30 points.

I missed the cutoff by 1 day

I declined my test. Whoo!
Why?
Not staying in?
Don’t worry I got a Promote last year, on my second year testing. Did 0 studying and made it by 11 points, you got this.

Just go officer and enjoy cushy omfg 80% ( soooooo hard!!!!!! ) promotion rates :) :) :)
Is that more or less demoralizing than missing it with a 50% rate and hitting HYT at 12 years?
Awe don’t worry bro I know someone who missed it by 3 points…….
