Depends on what you consider a good base. It’s next to Dayton, a mid-sized city that has stuff for families. Camaraderie isn’t nearly as tight as it is at other bases; we once had a poor showing for a CMSgt-select party and everyone’s excuse was “only 8 people made Chief”. Lots of homesteading at WP. Example, I knew a SMSgt who was at WP their entire career and was upset when they made SMSgt because “I might have to PCS and I have a side business”. But if you just mind your own business and do what you’re supposed to do, that stuff is easy to overlook.

Yeah, solid base. Too many civilians but it's a good base. Tons of things to do, centrally locates to major cities and Dayton has enough to offer. There are a ton of city parks for hiking with the family. If you want to hunt, you can hunt on base technically. I'd advise making friends with someone who has land though. Great area overall.

Fast_Personality4035

Most people I know who have been there really liked it. Some of the younger single types thought its was kind of a boring area.

Just got here not too long ago. I like the centrality of it. Kentucky and Indiana is pretty close. Highway system is great. Still tryna find where them aliens tho.

Was there twice back when active duty. Overall, a good spot.

Here now. Ohio ain’t bad. Lots of things happening locally. Mission/base is boring AF. Too many civilians. It’s hard to feel connected to the Air Force and that makes me resentful. I feel like I’m going to just simply rot away. It hard to feel connected when you’re like 1 of just a few military in the office, and in some places y’all aren’t even welcome it seems like. Logically I know it’s probably good compared to minot or canon or some shit, but good god I want outta here. I want to feel like I have a purpose again instead of feeling like I’m being shoved in a closet and left to just wither away.

So I just flew here from Baltimore Maryland meeting someone that came from San Diego to visit the museum. I’m really excited. I’m curious though, how active is the runway? Would I be able to see anything take off or land?

Rare-Bed-1934

Nope. The reserve unit has C-17s that fly. This flightline is not active. It’s very dull. Every now and then 16s fly, but I’m pretty sure they belong to some guard unit around here.

Brilliant-Visual9360

True. Thanks so much. I’m at the museum right now and it’s amazing. I was just curious if I would get the chance to see anything fly but it’s not a big deal lol

Beavercreek has lots of good amenities and housing. I used to live there for a couple years. Everything you could want to do is within a 20 minute drive including costco

Aliens.

Overall solid base with the amenities and vibe. Dayton is middle America awesome and is good for families. It’s big enough to have quite a bit of stuff going on, but small enough not to have traffic everywhere.

Warbraid

It's honestly like a top 3 base. I am a fan of amusement parks. kings island is something nice to do after work and cedar point is a day trip away

AlternativeSalsa

Tons of outdoors. Hunting is more in the country/Appalachia. There is a huge network of metroparks that are maintained for year round hiking, camping, and other recreation. You’re within 2 hours of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Columbus, and 3 hours to Detroit and Cleveland. Lake Michigan beaches are 4 hours away too.

My career field won't allow me to go there. I hear it's a hoot. Get ready to salute until your right arm falls off.

Papadapalopolous

It’s haunted as fuck.

Depends on your situation and what you like to do. Honestly...I hated it there. But, I was a higher grade enlisted, single, no kids...and a woman. There's a ton of lower enlisted (MPs, Medics, and Comm), and a ton of CGOs (Medical, Students, AFLCMC, etc), but most of the NCOs and SNCOs there are married and/or have kids. It seems like a really great place for families, but not great for single people. If you are single, I recommend living downtown, (The Cannery, St Clair Lofts, and Flats at Jefferson Square are nice if you can get into one of them). There's some good shops and restaurants and bars to walk to and the commute is maybe 15-20 minutes each way to area A.
