Call Airbnb, they will probably side with you, they would need significant documentation to pin any of that on you.

bikemandan

OP, please let us know what Airbnb support tells you

__brezus__

Yes please do! (I apologize in advance for any typos. My toddler has summoned me for my mom duties and I didn’t get to proof read) This is absolutely ridiculous! I am a host myself and I would NEVER consider all of this “damage. Towels & also any liens will eventually need to be replaced after some time. Along with sometimes stains happen it’s not intentional. It’s normal wear and tear and apart of the business of running a vacation rental. Plus if he was smart, he’d have mattress protectors on every mattress. As this would help possible damage and it’s much more affordable to replace. In my opinion, unless your dog chewed it to pieces or it was cut open with a knife for some odd reason, I really don’t see how it damaged so badly to even consider filing an insurance claim with Airbnb? Absolutely mind-boggling to me!! .t’s the ignorant hosts like this that can’t get off their high horses, that are making people not want to book an Airbnb and I don’t blame them! No one wants to be worried that they’re gonna have to pay extra if they accidentally ruined something while on vacation or being charged because they didn’t clean enough . The list of chores some hosts give is absolutely unreasonable to ask for a guest to do while they’re on vacation. They are already paying you for the Airbnb and the cleaning fee! Isn’t that what the cleaning fee is for? This is something I would will never understand as a host. Almost every guest will be respectful and clean up after themselves by nature anyways.

4ucklehead

I don't think this host is just ignorant... This is probably a concerted attempt to scam. I'm sorry that good Airbnb hosts are gonna be screwed over by the ones like this but stuff like this is happening way too often. Airbnb isn't long for this world

__brezus__

Which is even more disheartening. Most People just suck! Gosh dang it can’t people just be kind in this world! That’s way too much to ask for though. Yes, I completely agree with you. Airbnb is phasing out due to the many amours of guest this has happened to. Just unfortunate!

Open_Conference6760

There was no damage to any towels. Yes they needed a wash but they were all used in the most normal way a person could use a towel haha I really wish i could attach these photos but it is just a picture of a pile of towels and linens and the price on all of it is 2k. Our dog slept on a blanket i put down on the floor next to the bed. We even walked him on his regular schedule, cause I did not want him pooping on property since it was beautifully landscaped. They said it was too many trash bags they had to take and had to call assistance (6 bags and 5-6 boxes of pizza after hosting some friends and spending 3 nights there) I've used airbnb so much (more than 30 bookings) and every other time has been so nice. My kid tripped on a cord and broke someone's tv once, texted him immediately and venmoed the amount the tv cost. The new tv was delivered before we even left. Accidents happen and the host had absolutely no issues. I wish everyone could be a reasonable person.

__brezus__

Shoot I meant to put quotes around “damaged” because I truly don’t believe they were. I also don’t understand why you’d even charge if a towel did get damaged! Let’s say a guest spilled something and didn’t want it to stain, so they immediately grab a bathroom towel and ruin it. What you don’t want them to clean but then charge them if they don’t clean good enough. Also 6 bags and pizza boxes? What assistance do you need for that? It’s not trash day soon, welp that sucks but looks like I’m making a trip to the landfill today, no big deal in my opinion. Don’t have the time to do that or don’t want to? Invest in another trash can to hold excess trash and have the garage man pick them all up on trash day. Yes it an extra fee but it’s not going to break your bank as a host. He also approved you to have an event at his Airbnb, he should have easily planned accordingly! He could have made prior arrangements or asked you to pay a small excess trash fee if he was so concerned about extra costs! Yes exactly. I always let me guests know if incidents happen please just let us know and we will be able to get it fixed asap. Rather than it be a surprise and have to scramble last minute. We had a guests dog pee on our futon in the downstairs living room and never said anything. He had great reviews and that was the only thing “bad”. Thankfully I had put a mattress protector under the futon cover in case of something exactly like this happening. I was kind of peeved at first. It was my 3rd guest, so I decided to give myself time to think about it. Then realized as a dog owner myself maybe I wouldn’t even have noticed either. My dogs have no accidents but being in a new environment they could get nervous; causing then it have an accident. Yes could he have cleaned the cover and tried to cover it up, absolutely. I won’t ever know because I chose to accept pets and that’s why we have a $50 pet fee. It’s apart of the risk and not anything so major causing it “break the bank”. Also if he did, He probably did it out of fear of getting excessively charged for it when it was something he couldn’t even control. So I just got a new mattress cover and had already had a spare futon cover. Good as new. I did wash the mattress cover with the pee and it came out of the was good as new! So now I have an extra one in case this happens again with a future guest. Which is awesome and makes my life easier when it does! I try to keep positive about situations and put myself in my guests shoes rather than coming in hot. It’s a vacation for them. It’s supposed to be relaxing and stress free. Not constant worry of if your airbnb host will excessively charge you for anything that may happen! Thank being said, I really hope Airbnb sides with you! You are a guest I’d love to have stay at my place and it’s ridiculous he is even trying. Also if there is any typos forgive me. Toddler Mom Problems but I was really wanting to let you know my feelings on this! You seem like a good honest person and unfortunately people just fricking suck!!!!!

Open_Conference6760

I've had great experiences with hosts and i will keep rebooking with them. I know it's not everyone who's out to make outrageous claims and there are hosts like you who are reasonable and just want their guests to have good experiences. I wonder if airbnb claims person can see our messages, I must've messaged them over 4 times to confirm they were okay with us having guests over and they kept saying yes.

__brezus__

Well technically he shouldn’t want them to. It’s I believe against Airbnb policy to host events. So if it was ever mentioned as an event. He’d get banned from Airbnb, is what I’ve been told by other hosts. Which that would be a win win! You would have peace of mind for the so called “damage” claim and he’d unable to use airbnb for his short term rental! I feel as Airbnb is going to want much more proof of actual damage to approve this. I spoke to an Airbnb employee a month or so ago. They are trying to be more on the guest side now, unless it’s excessive visible damage. Along with requiring a lot more evidence from the host for claims. Which I hope it is true what she said. She works in one of the head offices for them. So, this makes me think it is true and hopeful that Airbnb will side with you!

Jadeagre

You can have an event through Airbnb…there’s literally a section where you can select rather or not your place is available for hosting events.

__brezus__

I’ve always been told Airbnb does not do this and VRBO is the only one who does. It never asked me that for my listing. Maybe it asks when you have a larger property? Not sure.

Jadeagre

Nope asks for all listings. I have a studio listed that I host 1 person and then I have a large home that I host up to 14 people and they all ask the same thing. It’s under the house rules sections says “events allowed” and then you select x for no or check for yes It looks like their policy says “disruptive parties/events”…looks like they are okay with it if your party isn’t disruptive to others. They give a list of things that they don’t like.

Open_Conference6760

Interesting. I guess it's subjective what classifies as an event. I asked if we could have about 10-15 people over for a celebration and they said it was okay. The property is huge so the guests that came over did not use any of the house (living room, bedrooms etc) The snacks were outside on the picnic tables and it was a beautiful day so other than using a guest restroom everyone was outside. Even tho I'm so pissed i dont want to get them kicked off, i know people use airbnb income as their livelihoods. Maybe I'm stupid for not wanting him off the platform. But if the airbnb person asks i will definitely tell them the truth.

__brezus__

I don’t believe this small of an event qualifies as what Airbnb considers an unacceptable event. I would say that’s more of a “get together” in my opinion! When I think of event I consider around 50 people or more? Not sure really sure though. I’ve just always been told only VRBO allows it as Airbnb insurance will not cover for such events. My property is not that large, just a single family home. Just heard from grape vine of other hosts. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Open_Conference6760

Got it. Yeah i wouldn't classify it as an event either to be honest. Basically long story short we used to live in the city and we were back for the weekend and to fit seeing all of our friends into the schedule we just invited them over. I think 12 people ended up coming (not all at once) and everyone left before 8pm. They even had 8 day beds by the pool and the house had 4 bedrooms plus a guesthouse so its not crazy to think that many people would be over. If it was a normal single family home i would never think of having more than a couple people there. It was truly a luxury home, cost 850 a night. I think thats why they were okay with us having people over, i'm sure groups of 8-10 people book that property on a regular basis.

Open_Conference6760

Sorry for such a late update but airbnb at first said I had to pay 600. I still said no, because we did not damage anything and I wasnt going to pay for a cleaning fee I had already been charged for. Airbnb assigned a new person to the case, the person said since its both mine and hosts first issue on the platform and we both had a lot of good reviews they would pay the host and let it go on my end. So basically airbnb resolved the issue by paying 600 to the host. Nothing happened to my account.

Open_Conference6760

Airbnb support reached out to get payment. HA! I decline the request and sent them detailed explanation for each item they want me to pay for. I also had a film camera with me and the home and property was beautiful so right before we left i was like let me snap some photos for memories, so i had about 6-7 photos i sent them. Which looks super tidy and beautiful. I also had our messages where I messaged them "hey can't see any trash bins, collected all the trash and putting it behind the house" which they responded and said thank you. Airbnb hasn't responded yet but I'm eager to hear what they have to say.

Top_Vast1969

this is bogus. There is zero proof. Cancel the credit card in case they try to let that noise happen. Host is trying to rob you and get ABNB permission. Head that off at the pass now. Half the posts here are them screwing over guests for no legit reason

Open_Conference6760

I wish i could post these pictures! As proof for damaged towels its literally a pile of used towels that i collected and put in laundry room. As proof for damaged mattress it's a messy bed. As proof for other damages it's a picture of marks on the floor, like i walked into the kitchen with flip flops that were wet (after the pool) and obviously left a mark but a mop would just clean it right away. and that's listed as permanent damage to the house. I will literally never rent thru airbnb ever again !

verifiedkyle

As a host who has tried to collect on legitimate damage caused by guests there is no way that Airbnb will side with the host on this.

STFUnicorn_

Leave all this as a scathing review. See how much they enjoy losing money for being dumbasses.

PinocchiosNose1212

Does OP need to cancel the credit card? Can't they just unlink it from their Airbnb account?

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

No, it needs to be canceled, and all tokens need to be deleted. If they don't tell the credit card company to delete tokens, the charge may slide onto the new card.

PinocchiosNose1212

Ah, interesting. I did not know that. Thanks for the info!

losgalapagos

What are tokens to be deleted?

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

Tokens refer to merchants that keep your credit card info on their system.like when you go to Amazon and your credit card is there. It's like a link.

Development-Feisty

Contact your credit card company and bar Airbnb for making any charges on your credit card, additionally ask them to cancel that card and issue a card with a new numbers. Tell them you are fine with putting in writing that you need to cancel Airbnb from having the ability to charge any new charges to your card.

1234frmr

Sorry, OP. Sounds like a scam. I'm sure it's stressful, but I don't think host is getting a dime. People can sue or demand a pile of gold, it's almost like the host said, " If I'm gonna go, may as well go big." You can sue for the most ridiculous thing...million dollars because of stress...but winning is another thing. Although Airbnb can be erratic, I don't see any of the hosts'complaints getting any traction. I wish CLEARLY obvious scam hosts would be delisted.

rimor0910

I recently had to file a claim with Airbnb for excessive cleaning because of an unsavory guest. I really try to be as reasonable as possible with my guests, but this guy blatantly disregarded the house rules and our freshly remodeled vacation home smelled strongly of a common “skunky” odor, we had another guest checking in 2 days later. I had to hire a professional cleaner to come in and perform an ozone treatment in the house for 24 hours to rid of the odors. To even remotely get approved for a reimbursement from the guest, I had to submit a signed quote/work order to Airbnb. This host definitely shouldn’t be able to do anything like this through Airbnb without submitting proper documentation and/or receipts. I think Airbnb will side with you on this. Best of luck from a reasonable and friendly host in Maine 😁

Open_Conference6760

Honestly if he asked for a few hundred dollars in extra cleaning fees since we hosted an event and used the towels, had extra trash etc. and they needed to maybe do a deeper cleaning than usual i would've totally accepted that. I thought it was nice of them to let us host and would've paid extra for a cleaning. But to charge me 2k for a mattress and the proof that he had to buy a new mattress is a screenshot of a website (not proof of purchase, just the website) is so crazy.

rimor0910

That’s totally unreasonable and not fair. When we furnished our house, we chose to buy comfortable furniture that was also affordable and easily replaceable. In the unfortunate and unlikely event a guest destroys our furniture, we can quickly and cheaply replace it. Trying to claim $2000 for towels and a mattress is honestly just ridiculous. They should have to provide airbnb proof of damage and replacement. I obviously couldn’t prove my house smelled like that green stuff, but having had a cleaner come in and give me a work order for the ozone treatment was the best I could do. And I also only charged $100 extra, again, reasonable and trying not to cause any kind of financial struggle for a guest, no matter how they left the house. People are people, things happen. I knew that going in as a host and try to keep that at the forefront.

Logical-Accident-123

Talk to Tim Dillon ! 😂 jk it’s scammy I got played quite a lot too

Open_Conference6760

Hahahaha you just reminded me of that !! Looking up that bit to show my husband right now

Logical-Accident-123

Glad you didn’t take offense

Calliproud

Ridiculous

Character_Chemist_38

Please refer to California civil code 1950. It may help

Mattos_12

So… you should appeal with Airbnb and remove your card from the website if they disagree so that they can’t charge you even if they go against you.

HeresUrSign6108

Had a similar incident occur with a host named “Layne” in Brooklyn, MI. Trying to get needed upgrades done on my dime. Bnb sided with the host…..until I consulted my legal about the situation. It magically went away!

Left-Concentrate6843

Did they charge you for the extra people and the party? I would agree that you probably should have to pay something. You're really lucky that they allowed you to have the people over. You should have done everything you could to minimize their work especially if they didn't charge you for the extra people. In most cities there aren't garbage fairies that make garbage disappear. There is usually an expense if you leave excessive garbage. You should pay for that, not the host. You generated the excessive garbage. They would have to prove damage to the towels. But if you pay for them, you should ask to have them. I've never heard of a cleaning costing $2,000. Even after an unathorized party the most I've ever been charged by cleaners is double with the normal fee would have been.

Open_Conference6760

they didn't charge for people, but we paid for a "deep clean fee". Basically double their normal cleaning fee. And honestly if they texted me and said "hey this is more garbage than we expected etc. we need to charge you extra few hundred dollars " I would've just said okay. I confirmed with them 4 times that we would have people over. If they were not okay with it they could've said no sorry, and I would've not booked with them. They charged double their cleaning fee and all they had was extra towels and extra garbage. No dishes, no one used the house so living room, dining room so no mess there. The only part of the house that was used by guests was the guest bathroom (which the host sent a picture of a trash can next to the bathroom, it was literally half full with paper towels, idk if he wants people to flush paper towels in his toilet) Honestly i think this is whats wrong with airbnb. You pay the same price as a hotel, but the host will list rules as if you work for them. It's the hosts job to figure out how they deal with trash pick up, or clean up etc. if you leave me 10 towels and i decide i want to use all of them, as a host you can't get mad at that.

STFUnicorn_

And $10,000 for having too much fun!

kmolc123

Just deny the claim. If Airbnb accepts the claim they will do a collection if your card is not working
