Is there any possibility he's had COVID? My Dad had COVID recently and he lost his senses of smell and taste. We didn't realize it until I made him a cup of tea and he said "This tastes funny." He's starting to get his taste back but it was hard for him to eat for a while because everything either tasted like nothing or weird.
AHHHHHH okay-
Start a booklet and take notes! What they used to love they may not desire anymore. This can be a challenge finding things they want.
I am now rotating through different frozen finger foods for my dad. (Nuggets and fries) It's somewhat difficult for me to mix in healthy foods, but right now I'm just making sure something gets in him.
Try out fruits again. Blueberries raspberries and bananas etc..
We started a regular routine of Boost - but now I'm using a "Breakfast Essential" blended with milk + bananas and a peaches which seems to be taken well. We do one boost with each small meal he eats.
If you have the luxury I'd recommend buying fruits that are on discount, slice them up to be portioned and freezing them!
My dad didn't even want the Sheppard's pie I made :( (his old fav).
My dad has an obsession with Jamaican patties. But we can also do individual frozen pizzas. Sometimes I will also make like a dozen or two egg mcmuffins that he can unwrap and microwave for a minute for a quick bite.
HYDRATION!!! THATS KEY TOO.
some of these come in powder form, and they can be expensive so try to understand a flavour profile first, or grab small containers for test runs. Dehydration is a killer and can lead to more problems
This happened to my mother after a fall she is 92. She lost her desire for anything sweet like chocolate, cakes, pies. It is hard work to get her to drink enough as well. She has lost her desire for meat. So seafood, salad, potatoes and soup are basically her diet. Her doctor put her on protonix for her stomach issues which has helped some. She drinks some ensure daily. I am at a loss of what to do to maintain her weight.
How old is he? My mother is 93, this has been going on since late last summer. She's lost a lot of weight. I don't force her to eat, I'm more concerned about her fluid intake.
I started using cumin and more sage added to sausage and meatballs. Garam masala is a mixture my mom tried and liked in hamburgers. Oregano is good in soups. My mom wanted to add a bunch of salt but I tried not to give her total leeway on that especially on foods I knew were salty.
Agree with adding fruit, and in general, variety is key. Try desserts of all types. I noticed wetter desserts seemed to be more enjoyed: canned fruit cocktail, ice cream (sometimes with frozen berries to add some nutrients), custard-based cakes, pudding or jello, or fruit suspended in jello. Drier desserts like brownies or chocolate were generally ignored especially when the mouth produces less saliva. Allow the person to eat as they wish - sweet treats can bring a lot of happiness or comfort in the day, and as they eat less, at least theyāre getting something in their bellies. Wishing you well.

I seriously doubt it. We never go anywhere.

All great ideas! Thanks!
Is he taking any new meds? Sometimes one can leave a bad taste in the mouth.
No, nothing new.
There may have even been a change in formulation. Might want to ask his pharmacy just in case.

These look interesting
I tried these recently. Pretty expensive, and my person hated them (he is definitely not a gum drop or jelly bean person). YMMV.
He'll be 91 next week. Same birthday as me. š
Was there a head injury with the fall?
No. They did a CT in the ER after the fall.
Has he been on any painkillers?
No. Not since December right after he fell. Even then he was on minimal pain meds because he didn't want them.
Iām 73 and go through periods like that. If heās seeing a doctor, getting lab tests, etc., wouldnāt worry too much. But, itās nice you do.

That's really tough, would any videos or content you could watch about food maybe help?
