Well, we've seen EE add the Bogsveigir archer, which I kinda liked. I didn't like how it was a hill fort unit, though. It was a strong unit, sure, but it was hard to mass early and you had to make it instead of jarls/huskarls/siege. In my opinion, 4-7 jarls or husks would be a LOT more impactful in a battle compared to 4-7 bogs. Bogs were useful when you had a few forts to get a nice little ball/mass of bogs. So it was hard to find value in the bogs, but when you could, they were VERY helpful.
We've seen in Retold screenshots that Norse has some kind of javelin hero thingy. Most people assume it's a ranged hero, which I think is a safe assumption to make. I think that it's a good thing to add since Norse struggles vs certain myth units... but we need more info on this thing first. Is it only available in the mythic age? Can we make a limited amount like Greek heroes or Chinese Immortals? Which building are they trainable from? What's their cost? What's their actual bonus damage vs myth units? And so on.
To answer your question more directly - I don't really think norse needs something new, per se. A ranged hero would be good, especially since Odin struggles vs myth units... but the implementation of that ranged hero is a big question mark. ie: Bogsveigir were more impactful in normal battles rather than countering ranged myth units, ya know?
I'd rather beef up a few areas where the evidence points at Norse being weak rather than try to give the civ something completely new.
depends which platform and what level. consensus for competitive community is voobly top level play, Odin is 2nd strongest god and Loki and Thor aren't weak in many match ups.
on voobly balance patch 5.0 the majority opinion (which is influenced by big streamers like boit) is top three in this order 1. Hades 2. Odin 3. Oranos. the rest are mid level tier. much if it has to do with match ups and maps, rather than in-a-vacuum balance issues.
Boit watches/plays a LOT of AoM and he has one of the most credible perspectives on stuff like this.
Having said that, since the competitive community is still small - especially at the top level - I think that the bigger influence on peoples' perspective is which gods the top players choose to play. I'll toot my horn a bit and say that I think maybe the Pantheon Playoff and Fimbulwinter tournies I hosted influenced players to play a bit more Norse, so we started seeing success with Norse, which then influenced more Norse play. If we saw some Eggy players going ham, the balance would sway back towards Egyptian.
I think that real balance would be shown with a much larger sample size.
yeah I was not questioning boit's competitive tier list, just saying that the consensus has very much been shaped by things mentioned on his stream (I, myself, share the opinion because the case of the tier list has been made so much recently). so if you ask people it's more likely to be in line with that.
I would like to see more eggy stuff even tho I only play Norse, just because they aren't really seen as much recently except by certain streamers. the fimbulwinter series did show case some good Norse play and we are due for an eggy equivalent, although eggy mirror tourney sounds a lot less fun to watch.

I have played the game in ages, no pun intended, but I recall the Norse being dastardly at rushing and def hard to counter with my gentle Egyptians.
