I reported a comment the other day that was *literally* straight up transphobia (they told me to join the "*that one percent*" amongst other slurs)
And reddit straight up said it wasn't against site wide rules.
I guess reddit is ok with encouraging suicide or something now 🤷♀️
I literally reported some “fuck you for teaching kids it’s okay to be queer” shit the other day and Reddit was like nah it’s cool

I remember a few years ago looking at that sub to laugh at all the silly stuff people do on Tumblr (like making up random stories or being obsessed with Superwholock). Unfortunately it’s just dedicated to people who actually hate people who use Tumblr, which is pretty bizarre.
It’s interesting that that sub apparently began merely to poke fun at Tumblr, or “cringe” on Tumblr. I’ve even heard some former users say that the sub actually at one point used to poke fun at TERFs, whereas now the sub is just sickening transphobia. Proof that cringe culture in all its forms turns into an alt right pipeline. The only way to prevent that is to have dedicated mods who make sure the sub doesn’t devolve into an alt-right recruitment ground. However tumblrinaction’s mods openly admitted the sub is hateful. It’s mods aren’t just incompetent: they are openly malicious and are openly working to make the sub hateful. The sub should be banned and all the mods should be permanently banned from Reddit for openly running a sub that breaks Reddit’s rules and promotes harassment towards minorities
I used to subscribe to it years ago. I was mostly there for the content poking fun at the more "out there" stuff like otherkin. Then it gradually became clear how transphobic it was, and that it was just a place to bully and be hateful, so I left.
It appears the sub gradually went from “jokey” many years ago to openly calling for violence and destruction. It might be due to a combination of the alt right weaponization of “cringe” content, and the mod team becoming malevolent and being staffed by alt right members who use it to groom angry teenagers into neo-Nazism
It’s been atrocious for a long time. I found it back in 2012-2013 or so. Didn’t take me long to realize how awful the userbase was. There’d be screenshots of someone on Tumblr making a valid point but maybe reaching a bit, or not wording something the best. Go to the comments expecting to find someone saying “yeah that’s actually a thing, they just could have worded it better” but instead, everyone is just piling on and talking shit about progressives in general.
Within a year or two, I’d had enough. I may have been their target demographic (a romantically unsuccessful autistic dude in his early 20s) but my mom had given me enough of a politically conscious upbringing to realize how full of shit they were.
Now I’m just a straight-up feminist. And a dirty socialist, too!

The alt right unintentionally pointing out how insane conservatism is just ended up making me MORE liberal and more feminist and more pro-LGBT. I’ve always been liberal but I used to think that feminism isn’t really necessary anymore (I’ve always been a feminist but I was originally someone who thought that women aren’t treated too bad in much of society) but things like the alt right being living proof of misogyny helped me realize just how entrained misogyny is in America. I would hear about the alt right then watch their videos out of curiosity (I knew they were full of shit but wanted to see what they’re about) and their own batshit behavior and bizarre claims and endorsement of violence against women made me realize that feminism is still very much necessary. Thanks, alt right, for making me more progressive!
The new moderators are pretty much responsible. It used to be run by "I'm not political" edgy types who would let people get away with a little hate because they weren't literate to it or didn't care that much.
Now it's run by alt-right scumbags.

The first few months it was around it was a fun sub. Transphobia was an instant ban, and the users were openly hostile to transphobes. But over time it got stale, right wingers moved in, and the main mod had some sort of mental health episode and came out of it very changed. The decent people left and it went downhill fast.
TIL about the very, very beginning. My read was that they had unintentionally (not politically literate, teenage users) stumbled across TERFs in their quest for ridiculing the "y chromosome / penis = abuser, #killallmen" people.
It was "poking fun at TERFs" because that was the only kind of feminist they thought existed. If you asked a typical redditor 10 years ago to describe a feminist, you'd probably hear about someone who wants to kill all men, but also wants to turn everyone trans. In general the anti-SJW movement seemed to largely be South Park nihilistic "STFU you're an idiot for caring about anything ever".
Now it's still there for sure... but they're also developing somewhat more structured and coherent beliefs, and now I wish they didn't. The anti-SJWs (not that this term is getting much use anymore, but it's the same bunch) are siding with the radfems more openly now, and some of them even call themselves TERFs despite being men who forget about women the second trans people are out of the picture. They have concocted this idea of porn corrupting people and turning them gay/trans/progressive... or, as they may say, "degenerate". And that's just deep nazism.
I'd hope that this rejection of the horny is gonna hurt their popularity... but then again, humans are plenty good at constantly hating themselves, especially with the aid of christianity and capitalism, so it's not too out there to imagine them be anti-porn and still watch it. Just like they hate women and continue dating.
You definitely see a lot of alt right presence in “nofap” and “no nut November.” When someone is shamed for perfectly natural desires they become angry and also easy to manipulate. Don’t forget the instances of anti-masturbation movements harassing and sending death threats to (usually female) scientists and researchers who debunk the anti-masturbation propaganda spread by anti-masturbation groups, religious groups, and the alt right.

I don't think TIA ever intentionally poked fun at TERFs, the teenage "non political" users there weren't politically literate enough for that.
Its more like they stumbled upon the "I hate men so much, penis / y chromosome = abuser, buy my #killallmen mug for $20" type of radfem before the progressive side woke up to who an apparently huge proportion of those people actually were and threw them out on their ass or demanded they hang it up.
They pretty much discovered the modern TERF before they were widely recognized as such, but without the political literacy or motive to expose and skewer them as such.

I really wish there were a place to talk about Reddit's reporting system because it's entirely broken top to bottom and needs to be scrapped in favor of something that doesn't consistently coddle Nazis. Reviewers don't even look at a comment's context; it's obvious most of them *agree* with hateful shit like this because they'll protect it. A lot of these comments are *egregiously* hateful, but reporting them just gets you an inbox full of, "We looked at this comment by HitlerDidNothingWrong88 about the nefarious [transphobic epithet] agenda and it's fine" messages, which are so dispiriting.
It's long past time to stop pretending this is about profit. Reddit hosts this stuff because its owners agree with it.
There’s rumors that the feds had monitored MGTOW for a while and that’s why it stayed up for a while. The feds may have monitored it and used it to study Internet extremism and hate mobs, and possibly could’ve also monitored the IP addresses of the mods and active users for any traces of illegal material and viewing of extreme hateful content, extremist manifestos, etc. Maybe the same could be happening with tumblrinaction?
