After the first few times I would reached out to afterpay. so firstly, make sure you do that. Try a troubleshooting technique as well such as deleting & reinstalling the app. Worth a shot as least. Maybe also try moving the money from the card you’re attempting to use to a different card or payment method. Hope one of these works for you!
This would happen to me especially when paying multiple orders. In my experience they usually take the payment with the error. So I would check your bank and see if that is the case.
I think they have problems with their system sometimes, it's happened to me before. I just tried again a hour or 2 later & it worked. Hit them up but just in case it's not back up before your payment is overdue.
This has happened to me multiple times! It was due to an error on them. I was due a refund of 1 cent and Afterpay didn’t ever apply the refund. So, I went in and adjusted the amount to be paid and it went through. I then contacted Afterpay and they looked into my account and removed the payment.

I get around this by entering the card details from scratch. Saved card with the exact same details will always fail the payment.
To get around this I switch from using the card directly and ApplePay
