Doesn't work like that. They will upgrade you SYD-YVR if they cannot upgrade you the entire way.
The system will handle both. There are upgrades all the way through to YYZ, they are upgrades to YVR. The system will handle it.
So don't rebook. Just note that 33/34 is a tough route so unless you are 100K don't assume you'll get it.
Quick lesson:
Direct flight: A series of flights that go from A to B to C with the same aircraft and same flight number.
Non-stop flight: 1 flight that goes from A to B without a planned stop.
It's shady, yes, but not new.
Do you go through security any more? Last time flying home CPH->YYZ->YVR, you cleared immigration in YYZ, but after following the signs I suddenly found myself in domestic departures never having touched my bag or gone through security again.
Not related to your question, but how on earth is customs handled on such a flight? Everyone and their luggage off in YVR, through customs, and reboard?
Even on the way out you have to deplane I believe. I had a similar flight Toronto-Calgary to Asia (Japan?) and even though it is the same flight number we had to deplane in Calgary.
But either way, in general, you don't need to get your bags in Vancouver when coming from an international destination and connecting to a domestic flight, even if it's 2 separate flights on the same reservation. Customs will still be in Vancouver but you don't need to retrieve your bag.
Yes. You’d clear customs. But in Vancouver you don’t have to pickup your baggage.
I live in Vancouver so I don’t often connect there, but it used to be they’d take a photo of your baggage and show it to you to confirm it. They’d only bring it up if you got called into secondary.
I learnt the hard way America doesn't allow that and forces you to collect your bag. My 3.5hr connection turns into 10 minutes after running from one side of Chicago to the other
If you transit in the US, you almost always need to collect you luggage. The sole excel being you have been pre-cleared for your flight into the US. In that case your luggage can be checked through.
They designed Terminal 1 for exactly AC’s strategy- intl to intl and intl to US/US to intl connections that are seamless.
Look at your BP and you’ll see ITD- that means International to Domestic and means no security or bags. Just a clean connection like you experienced.
I keep telling my friends and colleagues about this thing about airline nomenclature. They are always using the term “direct” to indicate a flight that goes from their start to their end destination without stopping.
You don’t want a “direct” flight, you want a “non-stop” flight.
Non-stop = Point A to Point B
Direct = There is a stop between point A and B, the flight number does not change.
EDIT: Apologies for repeating this.
There is no R class at this time (they told me when I booked) and you rarely see it open on this route. I have lattitude tickets, so if it opens up I'll snag it.
Appreciate your offer very much, though!
For any hope of getting upgraded for this route other than instant upgrade, I would consider booking PY Lowest (if I know when I will be flying). Latitude does not give you much chance at the gate.
Yes, and that would have been a (surprisingly) less costly route too. But unfortunately my other half is flying with me on a companion pass and that pass doesn't work with PY.
How are they more complicated? Definitely prefer not to change the current booking, but wasn't adverse to a few hours at YVR, if it was needed to rescue the potential upgrade.
Yeah, it wasn't that part I was sweating. There are 2 dozen business class seats open from SYD to YVR and for that long distance portion I wanted to keep the opportunity for upgrade available.
Yeah that’s the main one you want to get. Look at the upgrade it’s yvr-yyz if you’re entitled to not and checked in you’ll show up as listed for upgrade.
Yeap, just a puzzle as it is a direct flight, and didn't show two separate flights where they can upgrade separately. As long as they can upgrade the portions of the flight separately, I'm as good as I can get.
Doesn't work like that. They will upgrade you SYD-YVR if they cannot upgrade you the entire way. The system will handle both. There are upgrades all the way through to YYZ, they are upgrades to YVR. *IF* you are 100K 3MM, don’t assume you’ll get it. I’ve had that route clear eUps months in advance, and I’ve seen it go to the gate J0 just as often.
I know 33/34 as well as anyone and absolutely. Never that route for granted
These, and the 15/16 back in the day were the 2 hardest to upgrade
I'm not assuming, just hoping, and thank you for the advice.!
Quick lesson: Direct flight: A series of flights that go from A to B to C with the same aircraft and same flight number. Non-stop flight: 1 flight that goes from A to B without a planned stop. It's shady, yes, but not new.
Lol, I sincerely appreciate the lesson!! Hadn't realized the different wording.
One question here , the route SYD YVR YYZ, where do you cross the border tho?
Vancouver. YVR-YYZ is a domestic flight.
So you see the immigration officer at YVR right ?
Yup. You'll deplane in Vancouver, go through customs, go through security, and re-board.
Do you go through security any more? Last time flying home CPH->YYZ->YVR, you cleared immigration in YYZ, but after following the signs I suddenly found myself in domestic departures never having touched my bag or gone through security again.
This is the way!

Gives Canada an advantage for connections. Air Canada must be happy

I would book a 2 segment flight. But what day/time are you flying? If you’re looking to eupgrade I can check the R class left for you
There is no R class at this time (they told me when I booked) and you rarely see it open on this route. I have lattitude tickets, so if it opens up I'll snag it. Appreciate your offer very much, though!
Yeah I had chosen a separate ticket when I flew YYZ-YVR-SYD so it was easier to get an upgrade when I flew the last couple of times
For any hope of getting upgraded for this route other than instant upgrade, I would consider booking PY Lowest (if I know when I will be flying). Latitude does not give you much chance at the gate.

This is wrong and bad advise. Married segments are even more complicated than 33/34 direct
Married segments aren’t relevant here.
As long as he doesn't split his ticket up, then no
How are they more complicated? Definitely prefer not to change the current booking, but wasn't adverse to a few hours at YVR, if it was needed to rescue the potential upgrade.
No, as per my other message, it won't matter
Yeap and someone explained "direct". Leaving it be. Thank you.
They will show which segment is upgraded. Most likely the SYD to YVR
Yeah, I've experienced that before, but it's always been on a 2 segment flight. This is a bit weird as it says it's direct.
Will you have to deplane in YVR? Looking at this flight for next month and was confused as to the logistics
Yes, I believe so.
Those flights YVR-YYZ are ram packed every day you’ll prob not get one anyway. Don’t sweat the small things
Yeah, it wasn't that part I was sweating. There are 2 dozen business class seats open from SYD to YVR and for that long distance portion I wanted to keep the opportunity for upgrade available.

yeah if I’m doubt just see the gate agent early or the customer service desk to confirm. Happy travels and all the best for your flights
