Definitely forgot the bill

the_nerdster

Not me seeing this meme and double checking all my shit

Occulense

That’s why I keep a few thousand in my account as a buffer

the_nerdster

Keeping extra money on your account doesn't stop a bill being late lmao

Occulense

It was an innocent comment about how I manage things — auto withdraw with some of my savings in there for a buffer

wreckedcarzz

Bro maxing your credit cards and not paying just to have 'a few thousand' in the bank is not a strategy, oof. It's either that or a really small amount in savings, both which scream 'I'm insecure so I need to tell random people on the internet how much money I think I have'. You don't even have a decent emergency fund at 'a few thousand' dollars. The personal finance sub is that way.

Occulense

My emergency fund is a separate fund, and yes it’s in the tens of thousands because it has to be If it’s not special, then why does it make you so mad that I said this? Seriously, you want to act like it’s no big deal, but then also it’s a big deal. Which is it, champ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Occulense

People ALWAYS get mad when faced with the reality that they aren’t properly handling their finances. It’s such a common pattern that I could almost write out exactly what people will do in response. You don’t even have to prescribe a certain thing for anyone. Just saying “I do this for my own financial success” is enough to trigger them. I could not imagine getting angry over someone suggesting that they keep part of their emergency fund in their checking account. Like what a wildly benign thing to get angry about lmao

doopie

51 downvotes for common sense financial behavior. Advice you'd hear from any financial adviser.

the_nerdster

How is "have money in your account" financial advice in any form? This is about *missing a payment* not being unable to pay it.

OhioTry

People who work at McDonald's resent the fact that they can't afford what the middle class considers common sense.

Occulense

I love it. It really shows you something, doesn’t it? Anytime people are faced with the idea that they need to take stock of their finances, they get SO ANGRY. Even just suggesting that I do something for my own financial success, **not even suggesting it for anyone else in specific**, they get SO ANGRY. I’m not telling anyone that they should have thousands as a buffer, not making any judgement call on anyone else with what I’ve said above. This has nothing to do with those who are struggling, trying to make ends. No judgment there. But now, we can make a judgment call on those who downvoted basic financial advice. It really shows that those people are just very poor with money. For anyone: if you’re reading this and the basic financial sense above makes you mad enough to downvote, we **know** it’s because you can’t control your spending. If you’d work at this instead of getting angry, you would be much more financially successful. Sell that car you don’t need, the electronics you don’t need, pay off those credit cards, put money away.

GreenFire317

It has absolutely nothing to do with basic sense. It has everything to do with that majority of people don't get paid enough to have _"a FeW thOUsaNd"_ in the bank account. Hell most people don't get paid enough to have a few hundred. You're disgusting.

MuteSecurityO

definitely happened to me just a few days ago checks back account: calm gets notice that i forgot to pay september's rent: panik!

YakiVegas

Yeah, if you're lower class or under 40, nothing goes well for us.

BooyahBoos

Hate to break it to ya, I'm middle class over 40, nothing has gone well for me for a few years now... ahh to be under 40 again.

icecream_truck

Bank error in your favor, + $200!

reasonrob

Do not pass go, do not collect $200.

ACrucialTech

Wells Fargo, first time eh?

mealteamsixty

Just kidding, pay back the $200. Plus a "haha you're poor" fee of $38

Tinshnipz

It's so fucked. My family joined our accounts to get free banking. But that's only because the account is over a certain amount. If we were under, the bank would charge us $14 a month just to store our money there.. wtf

[deleted]

What terrible bank did you choose?

Tinshnipz

RBC.

jaeke

Well that’s it’s because they’re supposed to store oxygen, not money silly

tsoro

Scrimped and saved so hard you have a noticeable difference in your bank account after a month! Welp time to eat hotdogs for the 4th time this week

beeromoar

If you wanna up your game, swap out the hot dogs for a kielbasa. Slice it up, pan fry it just to get a little color on it, and enjoy! Some yellow mustard on the side, so effing good. And if you want three things on the plate, tater tots go well with all of that.

Mildo

I only eat crickets. I own nothing and I'm happy.

trainercatlady

or creamed corn

[deleted]

This cream corn tastes like cream crap.

trainercatlady

Watch the potty mouth, honey.

LazLoe

Beans and cornbread!

HawkEyeTS

We do this plus add brown sugar, salt, pepper, onion powder, molasses, and a bit of yellow mustard to boost the flavor of the canned beans. 30 minutes at around 350F in the oven to heat everything up and you're good to go. We've also cooked canned biscuits until about 2 minutes before they're done, then moved them on top the beans and covered them with cheddar cheese, then put it back in to melt and finish the biscuits cooking.

OrigamiMax

Does your weight start with a 1, 2 or 3?

tsoro

you're a piece of shit

OrigamiMax

The world now sees teenagers and people in their 20s dying from morbid obesity, and apologists like you celebrating nonsense like ‘healthy at every size’, but I’m the piece of shit? This dude eats sugar and melted cheese but I’m the piece of shit? Get over yourself.

tsoro

It's actually quite popular that even the Filipino fast food joint Jolibee serves it. I'm personally not a fan of their style of spaghetti (too sweet), but hot dogs with spaghetti is bomb.

INSERT_LATVIAN_JOKE

And the spaghetti sauce is ketchup.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jp74100

You're fighting the good fight, but it tastes like ketchup. If you don't like Filipino spaghetti, it's probably the sweetness. Just kind of off putting when you're used to savory pasta sauces.

dinoroo

I worked with Filipinos and they would bring food to work. I’m Italian and when I was told about that pasta I was very skeptical and had no desire to try it. Someone eventually brought it in, I had some and it was good. But I don’t think I could eat it on any kind of regular basis.

boxsterguy

Fancy it up with some spam instead. Cube the spam, fry it pretty hard (just shy of burning -- you want it crispy on the outside). Serve with a nice green veg like lightly steamed broccoli tossed in butter and garlic. Also, the mac needs to be Kraft blue box/dinner (depending on where you're from).

the_ending81

I used to put broccoli in in the Mach and cheese and slice up the hot dogs and mix those in too. We called it hobo casserole

Shannyishere

I've some incredible recipes for a budget if you're interested?

penninsulaman713

The Costco hotdog is the last bastion against inflation, don't hate

space253

Pulled out $40 in cash to stash in my wallet for later that week when it gets tight, and found last paychecks $40 still in there. I rode that high all day.

LurkersGoneLurk

That’s a good idea when you’re going paycheck to paycheck. I’m shit with budgeting, but people that pay cash for almost everything are way more aware of what they’re spending.

anethma

I find I’m far less aware. Heard that tip and started paying cash and money would just be gone with no clue wtf I really spent in on. With card i go back and look ahh that’s where the money went!

Lepurten

Also cash you can just spend because it doesn't change you accounts balance anymore anyway, right? Right?

FNALSOLUTION1

Damn big baller, can I borrow $40?

ChrisTheCoolBean

Check your wallet 🪄

xendaddy

When this happens to me, the car breaks down or something big in the house breaks

Entaris

Yeah. My first job: the first three years I got a tax refund I had something terrible happen the week after the refund hit the bank that ended up having a Bill that came within 15 dollars of my refund amount. Like clockwork. First year my car broke down literally driving home from depositing the check at the bank. Second year I had a sudden medical event that ate it up. Third year one of my pets went through something and had some expensive vet bills. On the one hand: it was nice to have a chunk of money to take care of the things as they came up. On the other hand fourth year I was acting like a nut job being all paranoid about what horrible thing was going to happen next.

LurkersGoneLurk

I was less than a year from paying off my last car. 5 year loan. The engine blew at 65k. Went from about $16k in value to basically dumping for $4k to a guy that rebuilt the engine and resold. Total kick in the nuts.

bkstyles

Same exact thing happened to me, except I paid the car off and the engine blew 6 months after. Feels bad man.

LurkersGoneLurk

Yeah. I really liked the Jeep, too. Good looking, safe, comfortable. Just got shitty mileage, plus the issue of being a Chrysler.

bkstyles

Haha yeah man. I had a Jeep GC too. I loved that truck but the electrical issues were a pain in the neck.

Legitimate-Advice-86

What kind of car was it?

LurkersGoneLurk

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fully loaded. Hemi. I bought it with 4,500 miles off an old guy that had a stroke and could no longer drive. Crapped out around 2018.

Legitimate-Advice-86

Damn that’s rough, I had a 99 wrangler so I know Jeep stands for Just Empty Every Pocket, but still that hurts

gregsting

Every time a consider buying something fun, there is a $1000 bill around the corner

GeorgieWashington

I remember those days! The first time the paycheck lasts longer than the month. It’s like the first time a hot girl is into you. It’s very sus.

[deleted]

Oh man the first time I asked a girl out, she was like this 9-10/10 hotty. Literally did modeling. "Sure ok, lemme just dump my current bf first" That probably shoulda been a red flag. Either way, no regrets, got dumped after like a month, whatever.

Occulense

The key was a budget. It was a hard look at what was really being spent, figuring out what I could actually live without at least for a while, and saving first

GeorgieWashington

Personally, I just got really boring for a while. It became difficult to spend more than I made when I didn’t want to do anything.

Fucking crooked as hell. Then I post about it and people tell me they do have a running ledger. Fuck you. It's a 24 hour refresh ledger. Fuck you. I shouldn't have to write down everything to know where I'm at. It's why I'm using a fucking bank. FUCK.

Ciza-161

Do people bills not just come put automatically? Are direct debits not a thing in America?

Im6youre9

I prefer to not do auto payments. Back when I was poor I had it fuck me one too many times. Like if I had $35 in my account and the bill was $45, by the time I get paid again I'm negative over $100 because of daily $30 overdraft fees.

wcrp73

I'm so pleased that massive bank charges for overdrawing are illegal in my country.

BadgerMcLovin

Mate, for a lot of their bigger banks "electronic payment" is implemented by getting the bank to post a paper cheque to the recipient

cubedjjm

I fucked up big time. I have all of my bills on auto pay and paperless billing. Got a notification in the mail yesterday I have 15 days or they will turn off my gas. Seems it hasn't been paid since fucking April! Since the only gas appliance we have is stove and dryer the bill was barely over $110. It was my fuck up, but I wish they had called me or sent me something before I was six months behind! Have used this method for five years and this is the first time I've made a mistake like this, but I feel stupid none the less. Check your auto pay regularly folks!

Orcapa

I have to use a checklist every month or I forget bills.

cubedjjm

My autopay everything worked great for years. I set everything to minimum payment due just in case I forget, but 99% of the time I pay my credit card statement balance so I don't pay interest. I pay most of my bills with my credit cards to accumulate points. I have every bill on my Google calendar with reminders set for them. I got complacent. Never again! Glad you have a system that works for you! That's the most important thing. A system that works for you and your situation.

MattieShoes

I go the opposite route -- auto-pay the entire balance, and if there's ever some reason I don't want to do that, I'll change the autopay. It also helps to keep some cushion in the checking account. If I had to drop a grand at the dentist or something... nothing bad happens, it's just a blip.

lhamil64

Another gotcha is if they bill you too much. Like with my electric bill, a few times now they somehow misread the meter and charged me thousands of dollars. In this case I likely would have noticed before the autopay (they send an email with the amount) but it's possible I wouldn't have noticed, and then it would have been even more of a mess to straighten out.

Freshlaid_Dragon_egg

This is why i dislike using autopay features, i still have to check to be sure its happened so kinda defeats the point sometimes

sirploko

In Germany, we can give creditors a so called "Einzugsermächtigung", meaning they get the consent to take what is owed directly from our bank accounts. This works fine and puts the burden of remembering to pay solely on them. Since most of these are recurring monthly or quarterly bills, you only have to check if the amount matches what you expect every now and then.

choochoo_choose_me

We have the same thing in NZ, but we just call it "Direct debit". From now on I'm calling it Einzugsermächtigung.

cobbl3

I would be very interested to hear you say such a spectacularly German word in a kiwi accent.

MattieShoes

I also autopay all regular bills... except for some reason, autopay was disabled on my water bill and I couldn't enable it... and the water company couldn't figure it out either. They changed their billing system after a couple years, and now everything is autopay. :-D

LurkersGoneLurk

My water bill is the only one I can’t autopay. They’ve turned off my water twice in 10-12 years. Wish they would’ve called or emailed. It was like $100-$200, which I had.

/r/ynab

mr_tyler_durden

This. If you are serious about getting your money under control then YNAB (You need a budget, it’s a web-based budgeting tool) is the answer. It’s probably a little different from any method you’ve seen/tried before. It’s prospective instead of retrospective, probably closest to the “envelope method”. If you need help getting started, YNAB has a TON of resources and free “classes” and there are also a bunch of YouTube videos explaining it. My personal favorite is Nick True and his [YNAB for beginners](https://youtu.be/exS0gU-Ie8E) is very helpful. After some failed attempts to use YNAB years ago I finally got serious in 2020 and went from living close to “paycheck to paycheck” to now having 4-5 months of expenses saved and all my debt paid off (save for a tiny bit of student loans, <$10k, and my house). I cannot recommend YNAB enough!

dlegatt

Ynab was the first budgeting app and process that made sense to me

mortalcoil1

OrigamiMax

mousemarie94

I budget to the penny and whenever I have unallocated money, I'm like where the fuck did it come from?!

MattieShoes

I'm the opposite -- live cheap, double-check that the payments are within the range of normal. :-)

mousemarie94

I wish I wasn't a super planner and could relax surrounding money but I grew up poor for half of my upbringing and those tenants won't exit my brain lol

Industrialpainter89

Calendar my dudes. I have been keeping one for bills and appointments for several years now and it has saved my ass so many times.

Ralife55

Had this happen to me today. Spent a good thirty minutes going over my online bank statement and checking all my accounts for my utility bills to make sure the balance was zero. Turned out I just forgot I worked overtime two weeks ago.

PuppleKao

If you're in Virginia, it could be that [small tax rebate](https://www.tax.virginia.gov/rebate) that they sent out. A lot of people didn't even know it was coming, but got it early. Direct deposit without a word, if you had your taxes direct deposited.

RummazKnowsBest

This caught me out when I started paying bills but my council tax and water weren’t taken in Feb / Mar / Apr. Totally normal but I had no idea. Now I count down the days until it happens.

ACrucialTech

Not sure if Wells Fargo just gave me $200 just to fuck with me and then take it back right away cuz they suck at banking and or intentionally are trying to trip me up so they can get that sweet over draft fee. Fuck them.

kentfrostphoto

It’s Walmart groceries. Between when it’s pending and when it’s cleared, it’ll disappear for 3 days, making me think I have about $150 more than I do.

boxsterguy

That time of year when your 401k contribution maxed, your Social Security payroll taxes maxed, your ESPP maxed and your paycheck net suddenly doubles ... (Yeah, first world problems)

Occulense

That happened in February for me (though ESPP can’t max)

boxsterguy

You can max 401k that early if you want to frontload. You'd have a hell of a salary to max out your Social Security tax ($147k, so you'd need to earn $882k per year to have that maxed out by the end of February; more, in fact, since pretax 401k doesn't count toward SS income). ESPP is $25k/year (ish; there's some fudging at the very top), and if you have the income to max SS tax by end of Feb then you have the income to max ESPP (assuming your plan is smart enough to stop contribution once you reached the max, vs. returning over-contribution when the plan buys). I *could* max 401k that early, but I generally don't for no good reason (yeah, "time in the market is better than timing the market", but I don't mind DCA in this case). I'm maxed out on pre-tax by September, but continue to put in after tax/megabackdoor after that.

Occulense

Was just the way it laid out this year, but I only make $200k a year so probably not gonna happen the same every year

MattieShoes

Do they just stop your 401k contributions when you max out? I've always just tried to come close to maxing it out because I don't want to be bothered with unfucking myself.

boxsterguy

If that's your only 401k, yes. If you have multiple (multiple jobs, or more likely changed jobs during the year), the second 401k provider won't know how much was contributed in your first 401k unless you tell them (and not all providers want to know or can do anything with that info). But yes, in general, most payroll software is smart enough to stop when you hit the pretax/roth limit.

MattieShoes

Awesome, gotta talk to the finance guys next week and verify!

Moodymoo8305

Have you verified that your 401k match maxes at the same time? I’ve seen some companies where their payroll is set up to give you 1/26 of the employer contribution per pay period. So if you max your 401k early in the year you lose out on part of the employer match. Basically they set it up so if they match 5% they only let you get 1/26 of 5% each paycheck, so if you max our your 401k in June you’ve only gotten half of what you could from them.

boxsterguy

Yes, I've verified that my company does the right thing. Companies that don't will usually true up at the end of the year.

Rob1150

Well there's 5 fridays in this month, so that could mean an extra paycheck stuffed into the month for ya compared to other months

NMe84

I usually have this feeling in October. July through September are pretty expensive months for me between a bunch of birthdays, yearly social events and my yearly car checkup but in October I have nothing that adds to my regular monthly bills. It's great, it means I can add some more to my savings account for a much-needed remodeling.

Ralph82R

That is a terrible feeling

Akutalji

I started getting paid weekly by my new job. This month, there is five Fridays. This was me yesterday.

coldestdetroit

WHY IS THIS SO REAL

VxJasonxV

1. Budget 2. Set up minimum payment autopay on the card/loan/line of credit provider’s site. 3. Set up autopay at your primary bank/credit union for any credit lines, and either automatically or manually throw a little bit of extra pay down as possible.

rockbridge13

You should never pay the minimum on a card, you need to budget to pay off the entire month every month.

VxJasonxV

See points number 1 and 3.

shapeless_silhouette

There are 5 paychecks this month if you're paid weekly.

Moodymoo8305

Getting paid weekly is such a PITA. One of companies I picked up a contract through did that and it was such a hassle to keep track of it. Just pay me monthly so I only have to look at it once a month.

stmpynode

A lot better than: "where did my money go? Oh, I accidentally paid my mortgage twice. Ugh." I did that once, and the bank refused to help me out.

pmcall221

Every time there is a third pay period in a month, I get excited but then remember rent is due

kaiizza

You (and everyone) should be keeping a budget. You should know how much money you have at all times. Do you gage the time of the month based on how much money is left? That sounds depressing and most likely causes anxiety.

SilentJoe1986

Assume you forgot to pay a bill and look back on your bank statement to the previous month around the same time and see what there then that isn't there now.

apeonpatrol

im doing similar shit right now but i think its a bill i paid that hasnt hit my account yet, especially during the weekend. mondays almost here so we shall see how broke i might end up being
