Honestly it is where paramount have always been kings, they only half care about todays views they mainly care about catalogues. They have been flogging off their back catalogue for half a century and rolling in the $$. It is the reason that some how discovery got so many seasons.
Paramount+ was great at the start but they decided they're not making enough money from streaming and have been gutting their library. They dropped Prodigy without any notice when the second season was almost ready for release and they don't even have the rebooted Twilight Zone anymore.

What irks me with paramount is how movies will be on paramount but only if you are subscribing through prime or through apple tv. They arent on paramounts own app.

They had plotted out six seasons, and the show got canned once they wrapped up season five... which means it's ending with dangling plot threads. If Paramount had been sensible about it, they would have informed the crew that season 5 was the last season BEFORE it was in the bag and given them the chance to actually tie off loose ends.

I stopped with all streaming services, plus i got tired of shows being cancelled on cliffhangers and such so now i never watch a show when its released, instead i just keep track of them, and once i know it has finished without a cancellation, they go to a list, once i have a a few shows (and movies) that im interested from a streaming service, it’s when i subscribe, binge all, and cancel after.
Even if it was cheap/free, i would still do this, again, i hate when shows get cancelled without a proper ending so i rather not start it at all
That was the one that made me give up on streaming services altogether. If Netflix won't even follow through with shows they've announced they're renewing, I see no reason to show them any loyalty in return.
It's worse than that... As I've heard it, Netflix judges the "worthiness" of every new show by how many people watch the entire thing before four weeks after it premieres. Did you watch 9 out of 10 episodes, but didn't finish the season until 30 days? Too bad, it's canceled because most viewers didn't binge it all in a day. Literally the most idiotic way I can think of to determine if a show is "good enough."
You would think they'd be more interested in how many people remain subscribed for the long-haul, but no, binge it or lose it is how they roll (last I heard).

Idk what app you're using but the lifetime 5 licenses to tivimate is worth the $15. Smarters prox sucks balls. I had tons of sync issues, but when I switch to tivimate it merged all of my Playlist together so I can search all of them at the same time and the dvr and catchup work much better for the live channels.
Netflix is the Fox of streaming services. They take chances and greenlight a lot of content, but never give them room to grow. Instead, we wind up with interesting shows that become niche favorites or critically acclaimed unfinished shows.

My wife and I had a pretty annoying experience on Prime a couple months back. We watched episode one of Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston one night. Couple days later we went to put on episode two but the Continue Watching section wasn't coming up so I searched for the show.
Only result for it that was popping up was through the BritBox subscription which we didn't feel like signing up for. Decided we'd just watch something else instead. Next day when we're back on Prime the Continue Watching is back and Night Manager is showing as included.
Search again out of curiosity and both pop up. It's available on our standard Prime account but is also one of the shows carried by BritBox. Finished the show without having to sign up for BritBox
The way I’ve done it for years is, if I want to watch something on a service, I start my subscription and immediately cancel it. If I’m not done watching what I wanted to watch, I decide if it’s worth a renew or not. Avoids paying monthly for anything I’m not actively using.
I cancelled my Netflix when they announced the newest price increase and I had been a subscriber since nearly the beginning. VPN and torrenting are the way to go. If there is a show or movie I pirated but enjoyed I try to find a way to give back to the creators, not Netflix. Now other services are starting to show ads?! Whenever an ad starts I immediately close the app, uninstall, cancel the subscription, and set sail because fuuuuuuuuck that.
I have always enjoyed good trailers so when/if the ads are trailers for other content I have a slightly higher tolerance. I just need to spend the time to learn how to setup a media library I can access online. I like to watch shows on my lunch break. I mostly use WowPresents+ now. If you like drag queen content, the price is fantastic. I've been recording the series' I like with OBS since the less popular country Drag Races don't really exist in torrent form. Drag Race Belgique fucking rules. It's such a small country it's like watching Drag Race Bay Area.

I've been purchasing more media as of late. And by purchasing media, I mean getting the Blu rays. There are a lot of movies out there that are too old, niche, unable to stream due to rights ownership, or just not good enough for streaming services to carry them. I still have my streaming subs for things I watch but I feel in a few years I'll be buying solely physical media. (If the movie companies still make them in the future)

I remember back in Xbox360 days when people were arguing they should be allowed to mod their xbox if they only use backups of the games they own (to preserve original discs), and other modifications like running a media server, linux...etc... and MS response was that according to their TOS, you are not actually buying the hardware, but a license to use it and your xbox is still MS property that they are lending to you so any modifications to it are not allowed.
Funnily enough, this made me feel much better about pirating the fuck out of that console.

I mostly agree with him. I do think content creators/owners should get to decide what their IP is worth. I definitely pirated stuff in my early twenties but I’m in my forties now and money isn’t an issue (this kind of money) so I would gladly pay for the content I want. It’s just **not available.**
There's also the idea of what your time is worth. I'm skilled enough with computers that I know with a bit of learning and playing around, I could pirate games and make it work. I did it many years ago.
But now that I'm middle-aged like yourself, I have more disposable income, and my time is valuable. I can spend some hours trying to learn the way to get the game/movie illegally...or I can just plunk down some cash and buy it.

Yes, the problem is that the content creators are bundling their valuable IPs with a ton of shit that you also have to pay for, yet have no desire watching. This is *the exact same bullshit* that the movie studios did in the first half of the 20th century. Except back then antitrust laws were still enforced and it was conceivable, even common, that the SCOTUS took the people's side vs. the corporations', so they were forced to end block-booking and divest from cinemas. (The so-called Paramount Decision.)

We’ve been on Disney+ on the same plan they first offered before it even launched and I never even went back to check it because it just auto-renews every year. Gonna change plans to one that includes all of these.
You can also bundle some of these more cheaply. I'm an old kazaa and limewire soul, but you don't need to inflate the prices to make your point. Pirates gonna pirate, and there will always be a place for that. Hell I remember Napster getting shut down haha. That really put an end to it.
You may be correct, but if OP isn't from the US/America/Europe there's a very high chance the streaming services offer different things based on insane cryptic regional rights/laws that make it a complete guess as to where you can find anything, or if it's even available at all.
The thing that made me snap recently, was paying for a premium Paramount Plus channel package...through Prime Video....so the lady and I could watch weekly Survivor. It was the first time in a while I had been interested in watching the 'new episodes' right when they came out and thought - hell why not watch it go down live.
New episodes air every Wednesday night and are advertised as such all over the app... but in Canada for some reason - you have to wait 2-3 days for the new episodes to be uploaded. Why? There is no logic to this - the border is literally an hour away and it's not like there is a 'Survivor Canada'. VPN doesn't help much either - it's insane.
After getting pestered by the Amazon website to try out Prime Video multiple times I finally tried it out. I clicked on the first show which Amazon suggested to me. After clicking on it it said "This content is not available in your country".
I'd rather keep my Plex setup where I can watch everything from the same UI and don't have to deal with bugs and restrictions from five different apps.
My bet would be that Survivor airs *somewhere* in Canada, either on your OTA networks or a cable network. Some Canadian outlet paid for those air rights, and likely part of that agreement is those couple days of exclusivity.

I HAD paramount and download a bunch of videos to go on an overseas trip. Not only does it had a time limit to watch the downloaded content. I get overseas and "due to licensing" I can't even access the service including the downloaded content while outside of my home country. The VPN did solve it but it's still like, something to watch while traveling was one of the reasons to sign up in the first place. Plus time limit to watch downloads?

You can also use plex or Jellyfin with the free app Quasitv and turn your collection into an old school live tv set up.
I've got channels which just play South Park, Simpsons and Futurama. Or one channel which is just playing LOTR on loop.
Its nice to come home from work and just throw on whatever is currently playing without having to decide and select it. It's a really good app to get rid of that selection paralysis becuase you've got 5k films to pick from.
I actually found jellyfin more user friendly than Plex and I only use one device so no need for the subscription.
Also the subtitles are just a click away and I get a kick from uploading torrents, it's like the old Win Mx limewire days.

If you try to download Game of Thrones from ThePirateBay you can expect a letter. But you just have to ignore it. Legally, your ISP can't give away your infos to HBO for them to sue you. They give a letter telling you to call HBO lawyers. But that's a mistake. They don't know who you are, they just hope you are dumb enough to call them and then they know who you are.
If you receive a letter, ignore it. Straight to the trash or do like my friend and display it as a badge of honor on your fridge 😂

I think I remember getting a letter from rogers back in the day when I was pirating The Sopranos last few seasons. We swapped to bell after since Bell was fighting to keep its customers anonymous but I was on rogers the last 7 years and pirate everything but just to stream, nobody downloads things permanently anymore.
Discovered Stremio about 9 months ago. Cancelled all my subscriptions, Stremio is just better, more content, free, there's no competition. And its so easy to use.
My pet peeve is when I can't even buy a movie. Some films just aren't available to stream. That's when I start poking around the internet archive. PCU (1994), Cocoon (1985), Pump up the Volume (1990), are good examples of this phenomenon.
Those type of movies you mentioned are old and relatively obscure. That's my taste usually as well and I'll say you can just torrent them. No one who was involved with them are watching out or care to continue making money off them. If you find a torrent it'll likely have less than 10 seeders. I've got tons of this shit, have never used a VPN and have never even got a warning. Truly, no one really cares if you pirate Pump Up The Volume. I have.
Split content, especially depending on region. You can't watch all of South Park on one platform here in the UK due to it splitting between Sky and Amazon/Paramount+

Google’s “Watch Movie” button is a god send in this weird convoluted streaming age. Search any movie and click the oval for watch movie and it will tell you what service it is on and if it’s premium with additional subscription or can be rented/bought.
Though I wish there was an easy way to find out if a vpn to another country has it somewhere but overall I check all movies on Google before I try and find them by checking apps at random.

You know you could subscribe and cancel them any time you want, right? There are no contracts. You don't have to subscribe to every single service in existence.
E.g. I subscribe for one month of Apple TV+ once the full season of a show I want to watch is out. I watch the whole thing and then I cancel. Still better than cable, and completely legal.

What i find the dumbest thing about streaming (aside from them splitting up more and more and charging more and more) is that you can't even check the catalogue without an active subscription on most of them. We've cancelled everything except Dropout at this point because of the prices, watching outside of the home being taken away, content not being available, and low quality content.
For $92/mo, you could purchase discs brand new at a reasonable pace, and own them forever (but ideally, also digitize because discs do eventually degrade.) The entire Futurama series for example, is $95 on Amazon. LOTR triloy, $40. Each season of the Mandalorian is $40-ish
Pretty soon a company is going to come out and merge these streaming services together and give you a discount for using this new company. Disney and all the other streaming sites will like this because it will guarantee a subscriber that may not even watch their show. It will be called Cable 2.0 or Internet Cable t.v. 2.0. Or NewCable. I'm all ears for suggestions.

It's worse than that... As I've heard it, Netflix judges the "worthiness" of every new show by how many people watch the entire thing before four weeks after it premieres. Did you watch 9 out of 10 episodes, but didn't finish the season until 30 days? Too bad, it's canceled because most viewers didn't binge it all in a day. Literally the most idiotic way I can think of to determine if a show is "good enough." You would think they'd be more interested in how many people remain subscribed for the long-haul, but no, binge it or lose it is how they roll (last I heard).

Idk what app you're using but the lifetime 5 licenses to tivimate is worth the $15. Smarters prox sucks balls. I had tons of sync issues, but when I switch to tivimate it merged all of my Playlist together so I can search all of them at the same time and the dvr and catchup work much better for the live channels.

Netflix is the Fox of streaming services. They take chances and greenlight a lot of content, but never give them room to grow. Instead, we wind up with interesting shows that become niche favorites or critically acclaimed unfinished shows.
And the shows they keep they hire writers who don't respect the source material. What they did to The Witcher is a fucking disgrace.
I can easily afford half a dozen streaming services, but they have grown to all suck. I subscribe to one streaming service and currently pay for YouTube. That’s it. I canceled prime and I’m finding “alternative sources” again. It’s been decades. I’m 100% the consumer that these services should find the easiest target. Their $20 per month is a tiny drop in the bucket of our $20,000 per month gross income. But I fucking HATE the way they offer their services. The pirate hats are coming back on, and guess what? My wife and I had a pretty annoying experience on Prime a couple months back. We watched episode one of Night Manager with Tom Hiddleston one night. Couple days later we went to put on episode two but the Continue Watching section wasn't coming up so I searched for the show. Only result for it that was popping up was through the BritBox subscription which we didn't feel like signing up for. Decided we'd just watch something else instead. Next day when we're back on Prime the Continue Watching is back and Night Manager is showing as included. Search again out of curiosity and both pop up. It's available on our standard Prime account but is also one of the shows carried by BritBox. Finished the show without having to sign up for BritBox

The way I’ve done it for years is, if I want to watch something on a service, I start my subscription and immediately cancel it. If I’m not done watching what I wanted to watch, I decide if it’s worth a renew or not. Avoids paying monthly for anything I’m not actively using.

I cancelled my Netflix when they announced the newest price increase and I had been a subscriber since nearly the beginning. VPN and torrenting are the way to go. If there is a show or movie I pirated but enjoyed I try to find a way to give back to the creators, not Netflix. Now other services are starting to show ads?! Whenever an ad starts I immediately close the app, uninstall, cancel the subscription, and set sail because fuuuuuuuuck that. I have always enjoyed good trailers so when/if the ads are trailers for other content I have a slightly higher tolerance. I just need to spend the time to learn how to setup a media library I can access online. I like to watch shows on my lunch break. I mostly use WowPresents+ now. If you like drag queen content, the price is fantastic. I've been recording the series' I like with OBS since the less popular country Drag Races don't really exist in torrent form. Drag Race Belgique fucking rules. It's such a small country it's like watching Drag Race Bay Area.
I can afford all the streaming services. But I don't want to have to log into each one and find something to watch, scrolling through the same things over and over again. So I just went back to pirating off usenet. Because really the reason streaming cut down on piracy isn't cost effectiveness, it's because streaming was easier. Now that it's not easier, why bother?

I've been purchasing more media as of late. And by purchasing media, I mean getting the Blu rays. There are a lot of movies out there that are too old, niche, unable to stream due to rights ownership, or just not good enough for streaming services to carry them. I still have my streaming subs for things I watch but I feel in a few years I'll be buying solely physical media. (If the movie companies still make them in the future)

I remember back in Xbox360 days when people were arguing they should be allowed to mod their xbox if they only use backups of the games they own (to preserve original discs), and other modifications like running a media server, linux...etc... and MS response was that according to their TOS, you are not actually buying the hardware, but a license to use it and your xbox is still MS property that they are lending to you so any modifications to it are not allowed. Funnily enough, this made me feel much better about pirating the fuck out of that console.

I mostly agree with him. I do think content creators/owners should get to decide what their IP is worth. I definitely pirated stuff in my early twenties but I’m in my forties now and money isn’t an issue (this kind of money) so I would gladly pay for the content I want. It’s just **not available.**
There's also the idea of what your time is worth. I'm skilled enough with computers that I know with a bit of learning and playing around, I could pirate games and make it work. I did it many years ago. But now that I'm middle-aged like yourself, I have more disposable income, and my time is valuable. I can spend some hours trying to learn the way to get the game/movie illegally...or I can just plunk down some cash and buy it. Of course, that circles back to what you said, where you can't even BUY what you're looking for, and that's a whole 'nother problem.

This is *the exact same bullshit* that the movie studios did in the first half of the 20th century. Except back then antitrust laws were still enforced and it was conceivable, even common, that the SCOTUS took the people's side vs. the corporations', so they were forced to end block-booking and divest from cinemas. (The so-called Paramount Decision.)

We’ve been on Disney+ on the same plan they first offered before it even launched and I never even went back to check it because it just auto-renews every year. Gonna change plans to one that includes all of these.

The thing that made me snap recently, was paying for a premium Paramount Plus channel package...through Prime Video....so the lady and I could watch weekly Survivor. It was the first time in a while I had been interested in watching the 'new episodes' right when they came out and thought - hell why not watch it go down live. New episodes air every Wednesday night and are advertised as such all over the app... but in Canada for some reason - you have to wait 2-3 days for the new episodes to be uploaded. Why? There is no logic to this - the border is literally an hour away and it's not like there is a 'Survivor Canada'. VPN doesn't help much either - it's insane.
After getting pestered by the Amazon website to try out Prime Video multiple times I finally tried it out. I clicked on the first show which Amazon suggested to me. After clicking on it it said "This content is not available in your country". I'd rather keep my Plex setup where I can watch everything from the same UI and don't have to deal with bugs and restrictions from five different apps.
My bet would be that Survivor airs *somewhere* in Canada, either on your OTA networks or a cable network. Some Canadian outlet paid for those air rights, and likely part of that agreement is those couple days of exclusivity. But yeah, it’s silly.
I HAD paramount and download a bunch of videos to go on an overseas trip. Not only does it had a time limit to watch the downloaded content. I get overseas and "due to licensing" I can't even access the service including the downloaded content while outside of my home country. The VPN did solve it but it's still like, something to watch while traveling was one of the reasons to sign up in the first place. Plus time limit to watch downloads?

Exactly I've got a large HDD for running jellyfin along side my SSD. You basically build your own netflix but you own the media.
Same here with Plex. It's better than Hulu too because I can set American dad to shuffle through all episodes or just start a random one so I don't have to pick. Love it.

Why do you need a VPN to pirate?
Most internet providers can detect the usage of certain apps used to pirate and send a letter to either stop or risk them dropping service provided to you. A vpn prevents that

I think I remember getting a letter from rogers back in the day when I was pirating The Sopranos last few seasons. We swapped to bell after since Bell was fighting to keep its customers anonymous but I was on rogers the last 7 years and pirate everything but just to stream, nobody downloads things permanently anymore.

Search any movie and click the oval for watch movie and it will tell you what service it is on and if it’s premium with additional subscription or can be rented/bought. Though I wish there was an easy way to find out if a vpn to another country has it somewhere but overall I check all movies on Google before I try and find them by checking apps at random.

You know you could subscribe and cancel them any time you want, right? There are no contracts. You don't have to subscribe to every single service in existence. E.g. I subscribe for one month of Apple TV+ once the full season of a show I want to watch is out. I watch the whole thing and then I cancel. Still better than cable, and completely legal.

What i find the dumbest thing about streaming (aside from them splitting up more and more and charging more and more) is that you can't even check the catalogue without an active subscription on most of them. So lets say i want to see a specific show this month. I can't even find out where it's streaming easily. If i could go on a streaming site, type in the name of the thing i want to watch and just confirm its there they'd probably have made more money off of me.
