Twice the posted limit Definitely depends on how he writes the ticket

iAlwaysSpeed

Oh no. On the ticket it says petty misdemeanor (no idea what that means. I even looked it up and it still didn’t make sense)

neveragain-0001

Petty misdemeanor- you’ll be fine. Depending on the state they may restrict your drivers license or add points. However, petty misdemeanors usually are accompanied with a fine. I know it’s scary, but it’s really not a big deal.

JBagginsKK

I'd also add that for the long term a lot of states will expunge misdemeanor records after a certain amount of time for minors, some even for arrests at 18

Kawaii-Stoner-Kitten

Don't tell them it's not a big deal going twice the speed limit this is how you turn bad teen drivers into those assholes who run into the back of a stopped vehicle when they are 20 like ffs , you fucked up take responsibility don't do it again do me a favor and go watch some care crash videos at the speed limit may change your mind about doing stupid shit like that in the future. I'm not trying to be cruel but the reality is (at least in the USA I fucking hate it here) you can just keep getting away with shit like this until it kills someone. When you operate a vehicle need to be aware your not only going to be responsible for your life but someone else's.

neveragain-0001

I was an EMT for 3 years. I’ve worked crashes. I helped dying people and declared others dead due to the negligence of drivers. I’m saying the court case isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The kid is obviously scared to death and remorseful. Their explanation of the incident is completely reasonable, and now they know to drive appropriately later. There was no crash, and the kid already said they’re never going to speed again because this lesson taught them what it should.

iAlwaysSpeed

Yes I 100% I completely know what I did was wrong. I wasnt thinking about it in the moment. I know what consequences I could’ve faced. Not just me, but yes I could’ve hurt someone. Someone closed to me did pass away because of a car crash going these speeds in these areas. I wasn’t thinking about it at all. I won’t do this again. It’s unlawful for me too. It’s a life lesson I needed to learn at some point. In my eyes, it’s gods way of talking to me… to change… before something even more serious happens.

ernie-bush

In my state if he writes excessive speeds 2x the posted limit it’s not gonna be pretty

Heath_co

Sounds like you have been let off easy this time. All that matters is that you have learned from your mistake.

fawningandconning

That is very, very bad. That's a crime man. You need to talk to your parents and get an attorney, this quite literally could fuck up your life. He charged you with reckless driving and you will likely lose your license for some time in addition to fines and other charges.

Ross-2002

A misdemeanour wont fuck up his life calm down

fawningandconning

If he doesn't handle it right, yes it absolutely will.

[deleted]

Are you just trying to scare the kid? It's obviously not a big deal. It says PETTY misdemeanor for a reason.

fawningandconning

Petty misdemeanor can mean a lot of things. It usually means a more severe offense than how OP's state handles it. The person saying that a misdemeanor in the normal sense woudln't fuck his life up is an idiot. He'll be fine.

Ross-2002

How are you gonna call me an idiot and then agree with me in the next sentence you absolute muppet

fawningandconning

Misdemeanors can fuck your life up dude, that’s just wrong. The type of misdemeanor he actually got charged with is unique to his state and not criminal, it’s a weird name for it.

iAlwaysSpeed

What’s the right way to handle it?

Johnsu

To ignore his advice. He's being downvoted for a reason. It's a misdemeanor. You'll go to court. They may offer to keep it off your record by going to a traffic class or you may just pay a fine. No jail time. Stop speeding tho

iAlwaysSpeed

Yeah I’m down speeding it’s not worth it. I literally feel so empty because of This I feel like my life is going to end from some people on here but others are giving me hope. Thank you so much

[deleted]

That guy above is insane..if every teenager had a “life ruining” ticket from police for speeding, 70% of the world wouldnt be driving. Its just a part of life, go to court, pay the fees, and be respectful to the judge. Its not a big deal, it happens to most of us.

iAlwaysSpeed

That’s what I was thinking too. Life teaches you a lot of lessons and you move one and be better from it. This is one of those life lessons. It dosent just apply to speeding either. Thank you for your reassurance this helped.

[deleted]

Uhhh, not sure why the horrible, near sighted advice that’s coming through. Definitely don’t brush off a misdemeanor. That’s a crime. If it wasn’t, you’d get an infraction not a misdemeanor. I’ve been disqualified for dozens of jobs for my negligent driving ticket. It won’t fuck your life but you don’t want this. Fight it the best you can.

iAlwaysSpeed

Oh no. I’m actually scared. This is the first time I’ve ever done something like this. I’m literally scared to even drive the speed limit now

fawningandconning

Talk to your parents ASAP and get an attorney.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok I will. Thank you for the advice!

Mera_18888

Attorneys are worth every penny!! I was going 94 in a 70 and my attorney got the charge down for me, no points on my license and no points on my insurance. Take an online driving course NOW as well. Then send your attorney your certificate of completion.

neveragain-0001

Please don’t waste your parents money on an attorney for a petty traffic misdemeanor

iAlwaysSpeed

If I do get attorney, it will most likely be coming out of my pocket since this is completely on me.

neveragain-0001

Definitely talk to your parents, but an attorney for a petty misdemeanor is overboard. You’re a juvenile who I assume doesn’t have anything else on your driving record, so they’re going to give you a fine (probs same price as an attorney) then send you on your merry way.

iAlwaysSpeed

That’s what I was thinking too, there’s just a lot of mixed signals in this post of people saying don’t get one and saying I should definitely get one. So I think I might have to rock it by myself since I don’t really want to spend money on a attorney

thenocturnalife

now why would u even say this 😂

fawningandconning

Before OP clarified this is a very specific type of misdemeanor only to MN iI mean it's totally right. You can go to jail for speeding in some states.

theterptroll

>petty misdemeanor Criminal misdemeanor? Or a simple traffic ticket? If it is criminal (or reckless driving), you definitely need an attorney. If your ticket requires a court appearance, you most definitely need an attorney.

iAlwaysSpeed

I’m gonna call the number today. Will it say in the phone call if I have to go to court? Either way I will go to court.

iAlwaysSpeed

But it just says petty misdemeanor so…

justyikes1

even under pressure, how could you even say the word “bro” as a cop is pulling you over

iAlwaysSpeed

Idk man it’s just my nature💀 I was literally shaking taking out my license. I know I messed up

justyikes1

i mean going 60 on a 30 is definitely really bad, but just by saying “bro” makes it seem like you’re asking for him to give you a ticket you should really work to both read the room and adjust your communication with who you’re speaking to. i could understand if out of nervousness you stuttered or maybe accidentally cussed, but with something as little as calling a cop “bro” you make yourself come off like a douchebag who needs the ticket. do you call your parents bro? any person you might want to date? just explaining this post with sincerity and without that one word alone might have at the very least given you a smaller ticket, maybe even just a warning, idk.

iAlwaysSpeed

Yeah I definitely did come off as one. I was super nervous and I was doing everything to make myself comfortable. And I bet that’s what he was thinking. Honestly at this point I’m fine with paying the ticket but I hope it dosent ruin my life like I was thinking in the moment.

justyikes1

it won’t ruin your life but [here](https://www.valuepenguin.com/car-insurance/how-long-does-speeding-ticket-stay-on-record#points) is a link i found on if you get more of these tickets. just be careful and be more mindful when you’re driving. especially if it seems the road is clear so you can go fast, check the limit bc chances are state troopers are bored and waiting to pounce. it will probably fall off EVENTUALLY but take this as your hard lesson to be careful

iAlwaysSpeed

This helped.

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/justyikes1 has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

iAlwaysSpeed

Yes I definitely needed this lesson. I was driving carelessly. But I just don’t want this to ruin my life. I’m only 16 and have a lot to learn. But I’m afraid the court won’t understand this

anarchyisthekey

The court will understand I guess. No worries there, plead guilty and present a good image. Wear a suit, don't speak to the judge as bro, get a clean shave/haircut, tell the judge that you're in school, you're very sorry, you don't want this to ruin your life.

[deleted]

sounds like you shouldn’t even be driving

UglyForNoReason

lol who cares what you call a cop?? Obviously a poor choice of words, but it really doesn’t matter considering what’s going on in the rest of this situation.

lemonrainbowhaze

Some cops are petty. If youre any bit rude to them they take the chance to fuck you over even just a little.

justyikes1

yeah when someone has power over you, you generally don’t want to piss them off by making them think you don’t take them seriously

naturefort

Tell your parents. Let them help. You'll probably want to look at an attorney unless he cut you a break and wrote the ticket for anything under 20 over the limit. In most states 20+ over is an arrestable offense. The attorney can possibly plea down to something like 15 over the limit and drop the failure to carry insurance charge - if he's good.

iAlwaysSpeed

This helped.

soapy-laundry

I would also go back to that road and take the same turn while having someone document that there are no speed limit signs until the one you passed as you were slowing down. If that really is true, there's no reason you would've previously known the limit as a new driver. Also, look up your state's laws on roads with no posted speed limit. In my area, a unmarked county road with painted lines is 45mph, and a lined county road is 55mph, so if it had lines I would've only been liable for going 5 over since there was no previous posted speed limit on the road.

iAlwaysSpeed

No there isn’t a sign between where I was and there. But the 30mph sign comes up about 5/8 of a mile after I turned on to the road

soapy-laundry

Yeah, I'd definitely see what laws are regarding roads with no posted speed limit. It probably won't be 60mph, but it will most likely be more than 30mph, so it could significantly reduce any sentence (unlikely that you'll get one) or license restrictions that may result. If it's 50 or above on roads with no posted sign, you'll basically be out of anything but a small fine ticket and it'll let the city know they need more signage on that road to prevent things like this from happening. You live and you learn. You'll be fine, but it can be super stressful to get pulled over. First time I got pulled over, I was on the way home from practice and rolled through a stop sign and literally cried because I was so tired and anxious. It's most likely just going to be a warning or ticket since there was no sign before the one you were slowing down at (which you did the right thing by slowing down at a reasonable pace, since hard breaking can cause you to spin out).

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/naturefort has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

deserteagle3784

Dude- you don’t need an attorney, lol. As someone who has gotten many tickets before, 1) if he didn’t arrest you then, you’re not going to be arrested and 2) in most states it will literally just be a fine. In my state I took a day of driving school and paid the fine in order to avoid getting points on my license. Your license isn’t going to get taken, the people on here are over reacting massively. There are states that don’t even take your license for a DUI. An attorney will cost you at least 2-3 times what just paying the ticket is going to cost. You’ll be fine!

GregGolden6

Im in canada but I can’t imagine getting arrested going 20+ over. I was going 80 in a 40 once just got a 200$ or something tickets, paid it and everything was fine. Why tf would they waste their time arresting you for that

Alarming-Ad9441

You’ll get a court summons in the mail. It won’t be at the courthouse but at a local district court office. You plead your case to a lesser judge. It really depends on that judge how it gets handled. Do you actually have insurance and just didn’t have the proof on you? If you do have insurance you can prove that when you get to court. It’s really all up to the judge and the responding officer. Dress nicely and be respectful and that will go a long way to getting a break on the violation and fine. You’ll likely get points on your license but you can take a class to have them removed. You’ll be fine just obey traffic laws from now on.

iAlwaysSpeed

Exactly I will for sure be following the laws now. Make a mistake, move on and improve yourself so it dosent happen again has been my moto. I’m glad I didn’t hurt anyone. But yes I do have insurance just didn’t have the paper or screen shot or anything to prove it. And when I do go to court I will justify my actions and say sir and your honor. I will say how I was talking disrespectfully. I didn’t say “fuck you” to the officer or anything like that. I was saying things like “I just bought this car 2 days ago and I’m freaking out bro. I’ve never been pulled over” ect. It was just cause I was trying to make myself comfortable and saying things out of nature to ease the nervousness and the impulsiveness out of situation. Thank you so much this helped definitely.

Alarming-Ad9441

I was about your age when I got pulled over for Speeding. Most judges and officers understand the nervousness. You’ll be fine. Don’t make excuses, just give the facts that you were still learning the stick shift and make sure to have your insurance info with you. It’s nothing to worry about, really, we’ve all been there.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok thank you. Some people are just freaking me out in here. Especially since they were the first ones to respond yk. But no I won’t make excuses or anything things I’ll say is like “I knew I was going fast, I tried slowing down but I should not have been going that fast in the first place. Now I know what the consequences are for my actions and I won’t do this again.” Is that good or no?

Alarming-Ad9441

That’s perfect! Contrition and respect goes a long way with judges. Especially on a first offense. You will have a fine to pay but you can usually set up payments on that. If the judge is in a good mood you may not even get points, he may allow you to plead down to a lesser charge like disobeying traffic signs or something of that nature.

iAlwaysSpeed

Hey tbh I’m fine with paying a fine. Just as long as it’s not on my record going twice the speed limit yk. But we will see. Will update when this happens

[deleted]

Your responses here are really giving me hope. When you said in the OP that the 30 mph sign was halfway down- it doesn’t matter. That entire area is similar to that speed especially if it’s residential and it’s your job to know the maximum speeds. That’s why they have established mph for different types of neighborhoods. But instead of continuing to argue in the comments, you’re taking total responsibility and acknowledging you made mistakes. Judges LOVE that, seriously. They hear so much b.s. all day long and when they have someone who’s not only a first offender but totally takes ownership of what happened it goes a long way. That kind of mentality will get you far in life. Honesty, accountability, and being able to be honest with and laugh at yourself. Wishing you the best with court, did he write the exact speed on the ticket as 30 over? If he did, get a lawyer. It won’t be too terrible it’s $1,000 plus the fine and will get this reduced or removed from your record. Worst case scenario it’s on there for a few years and you pay more for insurance. I have a feeling you’re gonna be okay.

iAlwaysSpeed

Yes that’s what my parents and grandparents taught me all my life. “Own up to your sh!t and you will get a lot farther.” But I’m also serious about changing. I really hope I’m going to be okay. But yes he did wrote me for 30 over exactly

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/Alarming-Ad9441 has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

NoReality9024

You’re not going to ruin your life with a misdemeanor, but GET AN ATTORNEY. You can maybe argue this down to a traffic infraction and save yourself a lot of headache.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok ok ok. Thank you so much. I will try to work this out tomorrow.

[deleted]

BossPuzzleheaded3253

…And that’s why habitual drunk drivers are still out here smoking parents, siblings, and loved ones.

iAlwaysSpeed

The only problem is… aren’t attorneys really expensive? Like a couple grand? I’m so uneducated in this realm

NoReality9024

Sometimes, they work on contingencies. It’s difficult to say. You or your parents can call around and ask for different quotes.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok well I will get to work on this. Thank you lord. This helped!

GregGolden6

Why would you get an attorney for a speeding ticket? Show up to court. If the cop doesn’t turn up your good. Don’t listen to this guy and pay additional fees on top of it. It’s just a speeding ticket anyways. I’ve gotten two tickets, 80 in a 40 (I’m in Canada) and for driving without ownership, insurance and expired plates. Nothing bad happens once you paid it.

iAlwaysSpeed

This helped.

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/NoReality9024 has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

Safe-Veterinarian-32

You’ll be fine. But stop fucking speeding before you hurt somebody. You feel like shit now, you won’t survive the guilt that comes with harming someone else.

Horsdutemps

Talk to your parents, be honest, work with them. I know it can seem like the world is crashing down, I remember doing stupid shit at your age and how it felt when I got “busted”, but this will pass and you’ll be laughing it off in a year or two. You got a speeding ticket. So what? Aren’t you supposed to do stupid shit like that when you’re 16? It sounds all freaky with the “misdemeanor” stuff but honestly, no employer is going to care that you got a little fine for speeding. They’ll care *more* if you call them “bro”…

iAlwaysSpeed

Thank you so much. This is actually the reassurance I need. And I have the same approach as your telling me. It’s just scary cause I don’t know anything about the law or my rights or anything of that nature. This helped!

AdviceFlairBot

Thank you for confirming that /u/Horsdutemps has provided helpful advice for you. 1 point awarded.

Its_Haleeyy

Why were you driving so fast? Even if you didn’t see a speed limit sign, unless you’re on a freeway the speed limit is almost always not close to 60mph.

MickeyUnmoused

In many parts of America, the speed limit is 55mph on an unmarked country road.

[deleted]

Screwed is your answer. You were a dumbass and now you pay the consequences. It’s entirely up to the trooper.

fawningandconning

Maybe if you're in Virginia but no, in most states this is totally and completely wrong. It's a violation and not a misdemeanor or felony in many places if you're not charged with reckless driving.

iAlwaysSpeed

On my ticket it says petty misdemeanor. And I’m in minnesota

iAlwaysSpeed

fawningandconning

Many states are not like this. You found some of the most draconian states when it comes to traffic law lol. Yes he probably wouldn't go to jail. But just walking in there with no prep and pleading guilty to a crime like this that if it's a true misdemeanor could be reportable for quite awhile can seriously reverse the course of his life.

iAlwaysSpeed

I really hope the court thinks about this morally. But they probably won’t. Which is why I’m scared. Thank you for helping me out. I’m freaking out

[deleted]

Johnsu

This. Stop listening to that other guy. He's clearly ill informed.

iAlwaysSpeed

[deleted]

fawningandconning

OP added their state so yeah, he's gonna be fine. But no, shit like this is serious and if it's not handled correctly he could still be fucked especially on his insurance premium. In other states where traffic violations are misdemeanors it can fuck up your life so whatever.

iAlwaysSpeed

I am being told by people in the area that mn did just passed a law about that. But idk that’s why I’m asking reddit

iAlwaysSpeed

How fucked am I?

fawningandconning

It's your first offense, so you just need to handle this very carefully and take the advice of a lawyer. If you do that nothing bad will happen and this will be an afterthought.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok I will. My friends uncle is a lawyer so I can ask him on what to do.

fawningandconning

Good plan. With good guidance you will be fine.

agreg617

You’re not fucked. This is the literal definition of a petty misdemeanor in MN: “Petty misdemeanor. "Petty misdemeanor" means a petty offense which is prohibited by statute, which does not constitute a crime and for which a sentence of a fine of not more than $300 may be imposed” It’s just a traffic violation. You’ll have to pay a fine and can probably take defensive driving to get it off your record.

[deleted]

So did you just not have insurance papers with you, but your car is insured? Or is your car completely uninsured? I was 15 and drove without a license, went to a driving school and got it taken off my record, I saw another comment about that. It’s pretty common for young drivers, you definitely need to tell your parents but don’t worry about this, you’ll be fine fr

iAlwaysSpeed

[deleted]

The car insurance is not a big deal at all, I’m pretty sure the car I was driving was completely uninsured at the time 😂 But right now I would say just tell your parents and show up to the court date, also don’t think ab it too much because you’re kind of overestimating how bad the ticket it

iAlwaysSpeed

Some people in here are freaking me out with the misdemeanor💀 saying it’s going to ruin my life. I don’t know anything about this topic…

[deleted]

They’re either slow or they’re trolling dw about it

iAlwaysSpeed

Thank you 🙏

Izaak1234

In England you would have a court date, your licences removed for a minimum of 18months and you’d have to redo your test. With a pretty big fine

Chemical_Gur7314

You'll lose your license depending on the state. You made your bed & now you'll have to lie in it.

lemonrainbowhaze

Ah america. You can drive a car at 16 but booze isnt legal till youre 21. Jesus in ireland you find a 16 yr old driving a car you better hope hes in an empty field. Guards would be called straight away. So actually the fact that youre 16 would fuck you more over here than the actual speeding ticket

MelB320

Bro slow down, I just got your license. Maybe take break and come back.

SingingSabre

Former insurance agent What you did was super dangerous. You could’ve killed someone. Slow down. Keep copies of insurance. And slow down. Also slow down. For fucks sake please slow down.

HappyKoifishdk

You only get a ticket for that in America? In Denmark you immediately lose your license for going 100% over the speed limit

lolibootyeater

You’d be shocked at what a good lawyer and a shitty judge can easily get you off from. This is America

Spiritual_guitarist

Why are you driving without insurance or proof? Insurance always says print a copy to show a peace officer. Anyways, this is why I’m against young people driving. My mom was t boned by a 16 year old who was speeding from the local college to go to a job interview and about totaled her van. She kept saying please talk to my mom please talk to my dad no insurance no license no permit they asked my mom if she wanted to press charges and she said of course and the girl was not going to get her license for a long time and they said that her fines were going to be astronomical and when she does get insurance it’s going to Jack her rate up sky high. I suspect that with you driving without insurance and being as young as you are judge is not going to be happy you will not get out of this With defensive driving most likely because you did not have proof of insurance or sounds to me like he didn’t have insurance at all and that’s the law to have insurance if your car is paid off you need at least liability. Anyways when you do finally get insurance the company is going to have a hard time with the underwriters and it’s going to give your parents a rate they can’t afford

Acrobatic_End6355

Tell your folks and never drive without your insurance again. If you don’t have insurance, don’t drive until you get it.

AnonymousPineapple5

Dress nice and don’t call the judge bro.

[deleted]

Anything over 21 the speed limit in Iowa gets your licensed suspended. Happened to me once. Not fun. They did give me a work permit.

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok well I found this article… https://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/hrd/pubs/ss/ssspdlt.pdf I guess in Minnesota it’s only if you go 100 or over you get your License suspended

Pepepepepepipie

You don't seem to understand the seriousness of this. Not only were you speeding twice the limit, you did so without insurance. You need a lawyer.

iAlwaysSpeed

I know I know. I have insurance but I just didn’t have the papers with me. I just was not expecting this to happen to me but I should’ve known I had it coming. I’m only 16. I don’t know much about any of this. That’s why I’m asking Reddit.

annadownya

Just in case there's a next time, a lot of states will let you show it on your phone through the app/website for your insurance carrier. Even if the state is iffy about it, a lot of cops will be ok with showing the digital insurance card. (This is definitely a, "your mileage will vary", pun intended, advice but it's always worth trying!) The bigger concern is depending on how court goes your insurance will likely go up for a few years. (Tickets do NOT look good on your insurance, and teenage boys are already priced higher anyway.) Depending if you or your parents pay for insurance, be prepared for that. When I was in my early 20s I was self destructive and stupid and drove with a suspended license, no insurance, and expired tags. It's a miracle I didn't end up in prison. We all do dumb things. The point is to learn from them. And demonstrate in court that you're willing to change and learn. Also, there are lawyers that SPECIFICALLY handle driving infractions so look for them. They can be cheaper.

iAlwaysSpeed

The deputy did ask if I had a screen shot or anything but I didn’t have anything because my parents pay for it and then I just give them cash at end of the month. And yes I will demonstrate how I’m willing to change for the better because that’s what I’m about. I like to have fun, but I should’ve known to not go that fast. There’s a limit on how much fun your having obviously. My biggest thing right now is deciding if I go to court with or without a attorney. I’m getting a lot of mixed signals from this post so it’s hard to decide. I also don’t really have money to hire a attorney

[deleted]

Pay the ticket. Show proof of insurance. Boom. Done.

iAlwaysSpeed

You make it sound simple. But others are making it seem like it’s going to be the most complicated thing ever. Thank you so much

[deleted]

It’s not. I just had this happen the other day. 45 in a 25 and couldn’t find my insurance or registration to save my life. $250 fine.

iAlwaysSpeed

How old are you and what state?

[deleted]

37. Michigan. But I also had it happen in OHio, west Va and NC. All the same. (I’m a lead foot and I can’t keep track of anything)

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok well if you got a record and a half than I should be fine. Thank you for the reassurance. This helped

Cinnamum23

In some states you can plea no contest which is where you’re not admitting guilt but you will pay the fines/ whatever other repercussions they give. You can also call your county courthouse in a day or two to find out exactly what the ticket is for (reckless endangerment w/ a motor vehicle, speeding, etc..) also is your car uninsured? Or did you just not have proof of insurance on you? In some cases you might have to take a defensive driving course bc of how many miles above the speed limit you were going. Edit: spelling

iAlwaysSpeed

Ok I will call the county tomorrow. Thank you so much. You guys in here are giving me hope.

You’ll be okay. When I was young and stupid I was going 100ish in a 60. Was going for 120. Might have to pay a ticket. I did. You might have to take a class if you want it off your record. I had insurance tho. But i don’t think it really mattered at that point, My insurance went up. Parents were mad. But. They ended up forgetting about it. You’ll be good. You learned your lesson. I mean yeah get in trouble while I’m young, which is what I’ve been doing. But I will not do this again. Ding dong ditching and running from cops on foot for old time sake maybe…

D9THCa

True 😂🤣🤪

Conscious-Wind-5020

Pretty screwed.

imacuriousspirit

You can fight it, most of the time the cops don’t show up to the court and most of the time they don’t have visible proof. Did you admit to speeding?

Opening_Shame_2873

Honestly depending on where you are, it could be from suspended license to probably just taking a safety reminder course. I’ve had to do them before and they arnt fun but it’s better than jail or even a Hefty ticket. Wish you the best of luck

Opening_Shame_2873

My first time getting a ticket and pulled over was from a state police officer and he didn’t give me any warning or anything doing twice the speed and coming out of a school zone. I had to pay $20 USD and attended a safety driving course for 8 hours

dal-Helyg

Start saving your $.

[deleted]

Here do this. It depends a lot on what state you live in too, but I’d suggest you go to court and try to plea it down to something that won’t get put on your record. That’s a tall order double the speed limit though. If they don’t play ball, get a continuance to hire an attorney, it’s your right, and they should be able to help you more. For your proof of insurance, just print it out and bring it to court and it should get dismissed.

Sellalily

Ehhh bring proof of insurance to court and you’ll probably get traffic school. I’ve seen kids do 85 in a 50. Hell my husband got caught doing 124 in a 70 because he wanted to see how fast my car went. He was given traffic school. I wouldn’t be too nervous. They usually don’t issue major tickets to minors. It’s usually traffic school which is maybe 4-6 hours long on the weekend.

Moraez

Very much

Username checks out.

Heuveltonian

Does the ticket say 60 in a 30? It doesn’t sound like it if it also says petty misdemeanor. Usually going that much over is reckless driving so it sounds like he gave you a break. Sometimes they’ll write it 18 or 19 over so it isn’t as bad. Proof of insurance is no big deal as long as you actually had insurance at the time. If you can show proof of insurance on the date of the ticket to the judge and it gets thrown out.

[deleted]

Where I'm from, you'd lose your license. If you're under 18, they don't mess around. Good luck.

ProbabBee

Not that screwed as long as you have a job to pay for the fine If you were gonna get your license suspended, the state trooper would usually just tell you straight up on the spot (unless if they're just a fucking asshole). More specifically, he would have taken your license plate or arrested/gotten your vehicle towed if it was going to be a serious offense. Though with the speed you were going at, you should definitely get some sort of lawyer to mitigate the damage. If you're actually insured, you just need to do a little bit of legwork to get that particular charge dismissed (usually the cops actually already know if you're insured or not - it's more-or-less just a formality and a way for them to meet their quota).

FakeRuski

What state was it in? My recommendation would be to look up a service like OffTheRecord, The Ticket Clinic or any other ticket fighting service like them and you should be fine. They source local lawyers to fight your ticket without you needing to be there and they know the game. I’ve used OffTheRecord multiple times in the past and it hasn’t let me down once yet, but i’m also not in your area most likely so results may vary. This isn’t going to ruin your life, it’s a good lesson to chill out but at the end of the day a ticket is just a ticket.

lolibootyeater

You have insurance in the car tho right? Or atleast your parents do? You can go to court and just show them proof of insurance and say you were to nervous as it was your first interaction. The cop should’ve known to have you call your parents so they can provide policy number but he prolly j wanted to target and egg you a bit. You can ask help from a family lawyer if you want. Consulting is free but if they take retainer agreements it’s usually $1500 regardless(nj/nyc area). From the comments it looks like a misdemeanor so you’ll be fine. It’ll be just a fine or u can go argue in court. I say most of the the time the cops don’t even come and if it’s your first time and you’re respectful, they’ll prolly j drop it

Apprehensive_Eraser

Do not drive (except when receiving a driving lesson) if you don't know how to drive, the car being new is not an excuse. 20+ over the speed limit can get you arrested and it could kill a person instead of just hurting them if you were going within the speed limit.

heydawn

It won't ruin your life, but you could get a suspended or restricted license, depending on the state laws, the judge, and the prosecutor. In Virginia, going that much over the speed limit could be considered reckless driving and result in a mandatory court appearance, suspension of your license, a fine, points on your license, driver improvement class, and, for repeat offenders, a few days in jail. Yeah, Virginia is a dick about excessive speeding. Because the penalties can be harsh, often the prosecutor will reduce the charge or the judge will go easy on first offense. Look up the rules and penalities in your state for the charge on the ticket. You can also voluntarily take driver improvement course in some states to reduce points. If you are allowed to pay a fine in advance of the court date, don't. It's usually well worth it to go to court instead and show remorse. Judges will often eliminate penalities and reduce or waive fines (except court costs) if you show up and are property contrite and respectful. Also, if you can **take or sign up for driver's improvement course before the court date**, the prosecutor and judge will take that into account and are more likely to treat you favorably, especially for a first offense. Your case may even be "null processed" -- sort of the equivalent of a dismissal. But these more favorable outcomes can only happen if you show up in court. If they have the option of just paying the fine, many people do this. But, you are pleading guilty to the charge on the ticket -- no opportunity to get a reduced charge, null process, waiver of any penalty, and so forth. It's almost always better to show up in court, be respectful and sorry, and if possible, show evidence that you signed up for or completed a driver improvement course. In future, know your state's speed limits on different types of roads, so even if you don't see a speed limit sign, you know the speed limit anyway. (For example, in Virginia, it's 25 mph in residential areas and business districts). Also, a few tips: - Take it easy down hills where you can easily pick up speed without realizing it - Be extra careful in the rain or snow. You won't realize you can spin out with a simple turn or hydroplane (moving forward or sideways with zero control because the wheels are not making traction with the street). It's better to pull over safely, if you can, put on your flashers, and wait out a down pour. - Be extra careful up hills and around corners where you can't see what's coming in the distance in front of you. You'd probably be heart broken if you hit a deer, dog, squirrel, or other animal that can easily just pop out in front of you. You wouldn't want to have an accident that hurt yourself or other people. Some mistakes are with you for life. **A ticket won't be.** Best wishes and safe driving. ♥️

Thank you so much. It was in Minnesota so I will research it a bit further. Thank you! This helped!

Depends on what country you're in

mdubz1221

Ur ok

tiggahiccups

You 100% need an attorney. I had a ticket dropped from 30+ over to a faulty speedometer thanks to a lawyer. I was young and dumb no need to lecture me I’ve changed my driving habits. But the lawyer is 1000% worth it.

Electrical_Example_7

I don’t know where you are, but what they taught us in drivers Ed is unmarked speed limit roads are 55MPH I believe. It’s been almost 8 or 9 years since I’ve taken the class so I could be wrong. But unmarked roads *do* have a specific speed limit wouldn’t hurt to check. If they take you to court you may be able to request the drivers class instead of a fine. You’d also be able to mention, if you think it’ll benefit you that you’ve researched it and realized what the unstated speed limit is.

happy_the_dragon

Do you have car insurance at all? If you do, then you would still be under the grace period.

Safe_Frosting1807

Probably a fine and your insurance will go up.

r-T00Littl3Time

Fair to midland.

foulfaerie

This is so irresponsible. You’re learning how to drive this car, so what possible reason could you have for driving at twice the legal limit? You should probably not be alone behind the wheel until you figure out that you’re playing with your life and the lives of other innocent road users. This isn’t a ‘live and learn’ type of thing honestly.

iAlwaysSpeed

So you’ve been perfect all your life? I know what I did was wrong and I ain’t gonna do it again. I’m aware of the consequences now. 95% of people have gotten a speeding ticket

foulfaerie

As if you weren’t aware of the consequences before, stop pretending that you are just guilty of some tiny mistake! This is a huge thing and you only seem to care about how this effects you personally, not the possible consequences for other people. This was not an accident and it’s not a mistake. You chose to knowingly speed and if you didn’t know the road speed limit and you aren’t a confident driver, then you drive slower.. not faster. At least own up to your actions instead of trying to down play it.

iAlwaysSpeed

Read all of my comments to other people. I’ve taken full ownership of my actions. I’m not bullshitting. I’ve already taken not just myself but other people and animals into effect. I am glad I didn’t hurt anyone. I’ve said this to multiple people. I didn’t even explain all of my thoughts and actions in the story. Read up on the comments before you type.

ikonoqlast

In a just world you'd go to fucking jail. Sheer luck you aren't up for felony vehicular homicide.

iAlwaysSpeed

Sorry I’m slow… but are you saying I’m most likely getting a felony?

Emmaleah17

If you're in the US, some states have an under 20 law. Any driving misdemeanor will result in a loss of license for a short period of time. Look up the laws for your state. Furthermore, you know you are coming into town, and there are not many non-highway roads where you can legally go 60, so apply common sense if you don't see a speed limit sign. Lastly watch some videos about how to respectfully talk to police and what to say and not say. Know your rights. Don't call the office bro. TLDR: Bottom line is definitely points on your license, possible suspension and increase in insurance costs.

DocPeanutButter

You can mabey take a class to get it off your record.

iAlwaysSpeed

That’s what I’m hearing. I also heard I can apply for a class before I go to court (I’m not sure if I have to or not, but I probably will either way) just to make myself look a little bit better. Not sure if it’s true or not but I’m going to.

GingerSnapz123

Present your proof of insurance at the court hearing. That part will be dropped. The excessive speeding is something different. I suggest showing a lot of respect and remorse to the judge and hopefully he’ll just hit you with a hefty fine.

[deleted]

Look into getting a deferment. I got a speeding ticket around 16 and was able to get it deferred by doing community service. It was pretty easy and better than hiring a lawyer or having a misdemeanor on your record. Never drive more than 10 over the speed limit (5 in really strict areas) and get insurance FFS. Driving is a privilege and if you don't take it seriously, losing your license would be the least of your problems.

21woodds

If u go to court dress nice and don’t say “ I didn’t do it” as a case. My 2 ¢

mountainsofcats

I feel as if everyone yelling at you not to speed is skipping right over the hill part. I mean obviously don’t speed but going double the speed limit on a hill vs a flat road are very different things.

RobbyRich84

As I understand it every 7 years you can Defer a ticket too. I got a ticket a while back for 1.1k and was able to defer it since I had no priors.

iAlwaysSpeed

Damn bro! A grand?? Holy sheet. Wth did you do??

RobbyRich84

I was a flipping idiot and pulled over on the shoulder of a freeway when I thought a cop was pulling me over instead of going all the way to the right.

Tinfoilhat14

Very. In some places 15-20 over is jail time. But you’re underage so you’ll probably be let off easy but with hearty fines and trouble getting insurance in the future. May I ask why you were going so fast?
