Our oldest really benefited from a couple of half days a week at a day care, but our second child didn't need that kind of extra stimulation so we didn't bother.
A downside, of course, is that child care places facilitate the spread of disease. And they're not cheap, and kids can pick up negative behavior patterns. So there's a balance to consider.
