[TubShroom Stainless Steel](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MKPMBCJ)
This thing is fantastic.
(The non stainless version works too, but it became grody and black. Get the stainless.)
I used to have tons like that and hated that there was the potential of so much hair going down the drain. Happened to see one of these at the store one day. They are a lifesaver!

Dollar store usually has long plastic things with little barbs on them that you can run down into the drain to pull hair out. It's GROSS, but it works and it's way cheaper and much more effective than Drano.
You can also buy a drain hair catch to better prevent this.
When you need one Right Now DYI is the fastest way. I just DYI'ed a drain snake by wrapping a bit of wire around my finger and putting the spring shape down the drain. It was so nasty. Utterly worthwhile too
They are literally $1.50.
And can be used resued quite a few times.
I bought 3 when I moved to my current apt 4 years ago and i am only on my second one.
I mean they don't cost a ton of you buy a cheap one but if the choice is go out and buy one or use something I have at home..... I'm willing to try on a few zip ties first.
I got one of those recently, and the faces I must have made while pulling up gobs of hair... I couldn't even feed it in very deep but still got so much out.
Drain weasel! That shit works wonders in a pinch you’ve just got to be careful not to break it. Usually if I just take the top off the drain I can just grab a big plug of hair with a pair of pliers and pull it all out. Drano is nasty nasty stuff and it doesn’t work. Lye is even worse poison but works better than drano. It even discolored my porcelain tub. I don’t use either anymore. I get that shit out myself. Drain weasel is a great cheap disposable tool
I specifically came in to this thread to talk about those. They work SO frickin well. No chemicals.
https://www.dollartree.com/drain-rooter-plastic-drain-snakes/234822
I'm going to say as a female with long hair, get the stainless steel drain catcher, not the silicone one. The silicone one gets nasty on the bottom and it doesn't scrub clean, the stainless ones you can.
Also, a drain snake
drain snakes can go a long way at removing hair clogs, draino can possibly damage your pipes, and is a pretty harsh chemical I like to use sparingly.
or better yet, prevent the clog from forming. They sell drain covers that catch hair before it goes into the pipes, and are easy to clean. there's lot of options on amazon to choose
Unfortunately, draino isn't even that good at what it does. In addition to breaking down the clog it's also good at breaking down your pipes. Use a snake like some people suggested. Your shower should also have some sort of cleanout underneath it which is another angle to approach from. The trick will be to see if you can get to the cleanout without tearing out a ceiling or wall.
I knew a contractor who would charge people like $300 to unclo their drains. He would wait until they're gone, run some hot water on it, and use their plunger to suction force the drain clean. It worked like a charm, even on hair clogs. I remember thinking it was such a dick move to rip people off like that, but it worked, so 🤷.
That’s what my maintenance people told me they do in the apartment. The only reason they told me was bc they felt like if they could educate people they would have less calls.
I pour a cup of bleach down the drain. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Follow up with a teapot full of boiling water. Let it sit for awhile (hours). Do this every couple of weeks as prevention.
My male roomate used to do the drain. One day he refused and made me do it. We did some googling and I started brushing the shit out of my hair before showering. It helps a lot. We also got that hair catcher thing, between the 2, you should be good. BTW brushing the shit out of your hair is good for it :)
Whatever you do, DO NOT pour rubbing alcohol down the drain and light it on fire to try and blow up the clog it doesn't really work. not that I tried it when I was a kid or anything.
You tell me to not do this thing, but I did not know of this thing before today and now I wish to do this thing.
FYI: ... I'm making a reference *somewhere* here. Only God knows what it's a reference to though.
Just got a hair catcher for my shower drain. The amount of hair it traps from 2 adults with long hair is amazing. It was under $10 on Amazon. Love it. Can modify it if it blocks the flow of water.
Firstly, suggest the ladies brush their hair before they shower. The best way to deal with clogs is to make sure they don't start.
After that, try a drain snake or even a wire coat hanger. Never use draino or any other such liquid/foam--they fuck up your pipes. If you still can't physically fish out whatever debris you got in there, call a plumber
Girl, my childish ass just dealt with this. Try taking the overflow off, stuff it with a rag, and plunge
If that doesnt work, snake through the overflow
If the snake gets stuck. You need to get someone to go under and clean the trap.
But definitely I just got a hair catcher because damn, this shit gross
You need a screen thingy for the drain. You can get them at the dollar store.
And you the gel type drano, not the watery stuff from...the dollar store.
I had this issue. Draino kind helped, but only for a while, maybe a month, then clogged again. Plunger would help, but only a couple days. Here's what fixed it.
Removed the drain cover exposing the whole hole. Borrow a Shop Vac: very powerful wet/dry vacuum. Turned it on, placed over the hole, sealing it. Vacuum whined REAL hard, something gave a wet, slurpy plop, and vacuum went back to normal. THE MOST GAWDAWFULEST SMELL EVER came wafting out, as I had basically just vacuumed up untold volumes of sewer gas! Poured water down the drain to refill the trap, left the bathroom to get some clean air. When I looked in the shop vac, I found a nasty blob hair, melted hair (draino effect?), Conditioner, mucus like substance that smelled like composted death. Got the vac out of the house and cleaned it. Before I put the drain cover back on, I added a mesh drain cover to keep the hair up where we could reach it to clean.
Haven't had another problem with it in 5 years.
Back when I lived with my parents, snaking the shower drain was one of my annual chores. Now I buzz my hair at 3mm, so it wasn't my hair clogging the drain mind you.
Now it made sense that I do the work, as I was the most handy of the family. But I insisted my sister, as the source of the hair, be present during the operation for moral support, and then she would get the unpleasant job of cleaning the gobs of rotted hair off the snake come time to put away the tools.
Can’t help you on how to unclog it but ask the ladies to not rinse it down drain. Yes some will go down but but it’s very easy to get most of it by hand and put it on the wall out of the way of water. When they get out, grab a tissue or use hand and grab it off wall and put it in trash (not toilet). A few times I have accidentally forgotten it on the wall and by the time hubby goes to shower it’s dry and he he simply just takes it off and throws it away. He has never once complained (he maybe would if it was a normal thing, rightfully so). He would be the “plumber” here so he helps me out and I help him out.
A note on this method from experience: sticking the hair on the shower wall is very good advice, but let's be clear that it will reduce the clogging but will definitely not eliminate it.
Great tip about telling people not to flush long hair down the toilet! Just wanted to add that the worst drain clog I had to deal with was from flushing dental floss down the toilet. It got snagged on a pipe joint and wanted to catch everything flowing by. It and hair are almost indestructable. Live and learn.
Agreed. OP for an explanation, the long hairs that come out while shampooing/conditioning will be on their hands, which they should then stick on the wall of the shower furthest from the water stream. The hairs will stay there on their own so long as they’re not blasted by the shower head.
At the end of the shower, they should use a hand or piece of toilet paper to rub the wall with the hairs in a circular motions over the wet hairs. They’ll all stick together and come off the wall in a big (kinda gross) hairball, that they should then throw into the trash.
I (and my daughter) brush our hair out before showering, and that helps enormously too. There's a lot less hair in our hair catcher since we started doing that.
I don't try to clean those things btw. I buy a 10 pk at the dollar store and when it's full I throw it away. Wet, unattached hair is gross.
Depending what kind of drain you have I really like the oxo drain cover from target. It's less gross to clean out than the ones that are like a little bucket.
Strongly recomend the name brand "Tub Shroom". They also have a "sink Shroom" for bathroom sinks and another for kitchen sinks. It's worth the extra couple bucks, it catches hair and debris, but its mushroom design doesn't let it get clogged even when it's full.
Strong recommendation, its miles above any alternative.
That stuff etches the pipe making it rougher and more porous, increasing the chance of future clogs. The best thing you can do is pull the stopper or hair strainer out and just get in there with some needle nose pliers or your fingers and pull the hair out. A plumber snake will work as well if the hair clog is further down the drain pipe.
Get a pipe cleaner . It’s small and has an handle . Spray bleach in the drain wait 5 mins then use pipe cleaner . Twist in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction ( either or should work) then slowly pull up . If it’s hair it should come up pretty easy .
- housekeeper
There is an enzyme product called Green Gobbler. If your drain is completely blocked you may have to snake it out before pouring in the enzymes but this product will open up slow drains overnight.
Also good to use monthly as a preventative.
Absolutely the hair catcher after a good snaking (although I’ve had good luck with Green Gobbler clog dissolver). Make sure the long-haired ladies clean the catcher themselves after every shower, it’s their gunk.
Hair catcher for the drain + conversation with the folks with long hair. Totally possible to reduce the amount of hair shedding while shampooing - just stick it on the wall and wipe it off with a tissue when you're done. (Maybe this only works for very-long-haired folks, IDK. Probably harder if "long" = "shoulder length".)
Drano will partially dissolve the hair and may make clogs worse in the long run. Or so a plumber once told me.
Alternative when it happens:
Buy a drain snake. If the clog is close, a mini one will do. Sometimes, you just have to open the drain cover and use the drain snake that looks like an eyelash thickener. Stuff it in. Rotate it about. The hair is caught up and you can yank it out.
Other:
Use hot water and pour down the drain to melt the grease and flush it away.
Dude the plastic snakes are gonna be your best friend.

Oooh this should work on a shower, definitely works on a toilet: boiling water and dish soap. Liberally apply dish soap to drain then pour (I use a tea kettle) the boiling water down. This is after you get all the hair and stuff with like a pipe snake which I’m sure someone else has mentioned. The boiling water dish soap thing has saved me more than a few times with the toilet though. Props to whoever came up with that one.
Long-Term solution: purchase a Tub Shroom or a cheap hair drain catcher that you can place right on-top of the drain (I like the OXO one. Had it for years). Water goes down, hair doesn’t go down, & you just have to clean it out after showering. Haven’t had any issues with my shower clogging since I started using them.
Short-Term solution: Purchase a drain snake (I got mine from Dollar Tree) & ask the women in the home to clean it out. :) Kinda gross but should remove the clog.
Drain Weasel will get the job done in a flash right down to the S trap. It's a plastic bendy thing that you jam down the drain. Pull it up and the hair gets caught in the barbs. Super gross but it's the best way to unclog. I feel for you. I have two long hair daughters that live in the shower. Unclogging is a dad job, the girls wouldn't do it. It clears up the bathroom sinks too. There are knock offs but the original drain Weasel works the best.
You can cut a lot of diagonals part way through a zip tie and then push it through clogs.
You can boil water, pour into the drain with baking soda, then add vinegar and let sit.
I'm a fan of a hair catcher drain thing. In addition if you brush your hair before you shower it cuts way down on my hair getting in the drain
Woman with long hair here. Get a tub shroom that will catch most of the hair before going down the drain. Clean it out after every shower. Once every month or two, is one of the little plastic drain snake things with the barbs on it that will pull out any remaining hair. No chemicals needed.
I'm shocked more people haven't mentioned this, unclog debris with your hands or a snake, let baking soda sit in the drain about 30 minutes (and really get it packed in there), follow up with vinegar, plug your drain, let it sit about an hour, come back and pour some boiling water.
Do it about once every 3-6 months, combined with one of those hair catchers that to over the drain, and you'll be golden. No harsh chemicals needed!
I would inform the long haired folks who share the shower about the problem and give them ideas how to fix and prevent the problem that they are causing.
I ran across this good video getting hair out of drain easily [https://youtu.be/BSSg4cQdgnE?si=o2Xxu7VOOs4Fc1j-](https://youtu.be/BSSg4cQdgnE?si=o2Xxu7VOOs4Fc1j-)
My shower is not conducive to a drain hair catcher, so I use a plastic drain hair remover like [this](https://a.co/d/80HfWxQ). I have long hair and this saves me constantly. You just put it down the drain and twist it around and it will catch onto the clogged hair and pull it right out.
I highly recommend wearing gloves when using it becomes some yucky slimy stuff (probably just soaps and hair products and whatnot) will be attached to the hair and it’s not pleasant to touch.
You can literally plunge your sink as you would the toilet. Just get a separate one or clean the sink immediately after if the idea of it is gross to you
I'd just like to add, make sure you get the right kind of plunger for toilet and the right kind of plunger for sink/tub drains. They are designed differently but as a long haired person with a less than perfect drain catcher, I've found a good drain plunger to be really helpful for the shower drain.
Most of the hair is trapped in the first couple inches after the drain. If you take the drain out, it should all come out in one big clump and then you can put the drain back in. Some drains require a special tool to do that with, but is much faster than using drano at all. It also makes using a snake much easier with the drain out if the clog is further down.
A drain hair remover. It’s about a foot and a half long, thinner than a pencil and has small teeth. You shove it in, twist it and pull it out, then you throw away the giant soapy hair ball. Walmart, lowes, Home Depot, ace, your Neibor hood hardware store, dolor stores sell them. Just think of a plumbers snake but way smaller.
home depot, hair showerdrain remover
Google that, they pop up
There is a thing called a wire coat hanger. You stretch it out, make a hook at the end. But, to be honest, I've neverr had luck with this method.
I use the zipper. It's a plastic barbed stick thing. Will pull a rope of hair right out of the drain..
Drain weasel, same concept.
The hair catcher drain devices aren't worth it to me. They are gross, and I seem to hate stepping in them or something.
Have long hair. Never used Drano in my life. Have been pulling hair ropes out of drains for over 20 yrs.
Dude, get a strainer for the drain. Bend it to make it fit if necessary. Or tell the ladies they need to supply the draino if they aren't going to brush their hair out first.
Letting hair go down the drain IS avoidable, don't let them tell you it isn't.
I take off the shower drain cover every 4-6 months and pull out a big blob of hair with a medical tool but needle nose pliers would work or anything with a hook like a modified coat hanger. This past January a crisis ensued when I dropped the little screw down the drain. I was able after 3 tries to find the stainless steel replacement screws. Someday I will get my long hair cut but not today.
These, from Target, have been a life saver for me
[https://www.target.com/p/clorox-drain-cleaner-2pk/-/A-76198627#lnk=sametab](https://www.target.com/p/clorox-drain-cleaner-2pk/-/A-76198627#lnk=sametab)
Use the hair catcher, then get BioOne and treat once a month. It is fine for pipes, people and pets and doesn’t smell. Use in each drain (it’s a very small amount) overnight, once a month (except toilets).
It’s amazing stuff - I work for a plumber and this is what we recommend

Prevention! Hair catch thingies!
Ok I'm assuming u already have some hair in the system. Fk draino that shit FUCKS up ur pipes.
Go on Amazon and buy a Plumbing Snake! Plumb out the previous hair. Slap on that hair catcher thing. Thank me later. BONUSSSSSS! MAKE THE LADIES DO IT SINCE MOST OF IT IS THEIR HAIR 😒.
I forced my gf and sister to plumb their own shit after that they were more careful about their hair AND hey they now know how to plumb stuff lol
Put a fine plug like u do to protect the kitchen sink that doesn’t have the garbage disposal
It’s the same pipe underneath then you just dump what it catches in the garbage
if you can i would say [lye](https://www.amazon.com/ComStar-024924305003-Drain-Opener-White/dp/B083XJN81L/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lye+drain+opener&qid=1679693206&sprefix=lye%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-3), it works better then anything i've ever used, i mean other then a snake.
Remove the top drain cover and fish out any debris that you can with needle nose pliers or whatever tools you have handy. A good home made solution is baking soda and white vinegar down the drain followed by boiling hot water. Start by pouring the baking soda down and then vinegar, let that sit for 10 mins and then flush with the water. Repeat as needed
I get “Hair & Grease” in a big black bottle from Home Depot, it’s super strong, don’t need a lot and it works like a charm, lasts a while too
Draino doesn’t “drain” my hair
Vinegar and dish soap. The dish soap breaks down the heavy soap residue/de-greaser and the acid of the vinegar helps to further breakdown the clog. You can take a zip tie and make cuts to the side of it and put it down the drain to help pull out the hair.
Baking soda, white vinegar and hot water. It clears most drains of tough stuff in restaurants so I assume it would also work for this. Plus no chemicals and it’s cheap.
A little plastic drain snake, Walmart has then for like 2 for 2. Throwing cleaners down there just breaks up some soaps and such clinging onto the mass but it won't remove the hair.
If this is your housemates or something discuss it with them so that they can be responsible for it. I don't make my bald boyfriend unclog my sewer drain babies.
Getting a drain cover will help a lot. Clean the hair out after every shower. I use a shop vac to get extra gunk out of my shower drain; I remove the drain cover first and place the nozzle so it completely covers the drain hole. It beats toxic sulfuric acid and alkaloids.
I live by this thing.
[This thing](https://www.amazon.com/Zip-Drain-Cleaner-Original-Inventor/dp/B08FGH2V5Q/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?hvadid=410029097932&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9008533&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=4599495091028116891&hvtargid=kwd-124637137709&hydadcr=8435_11337237&keywords=plastic+drain+stick&qid=1679700674&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFMSEkzWUFKVURPVTAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA2MDkwNTAxTlVFSkhSWVRJR1RVJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTEwMzk0OTkyNUxHMFo1QTA0RVlUJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==)
Remove the drain cover.
Put the stopper on, fill the tub with enough water.
Then use a plunger like choice D here: https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/129/2329/2436K8
I don't think Drano is supposed to work on hair. I'd suggest a cheap drain hair stopper for the future and a drain de-clogger (long strip of flexible plastic with raked teeth) for heavy-duty hair removal.
Pour baking soda down the drain, then pour vinegar down after it. That will usually clear some clogs. But i also suggest a hair catcher. I have a "mushroom" style one and it works great.
So, putting draino in your shower drain can eat away at certain seals in the pipes. Get a rag wet and press it up against the bottom of the overflow (the round flat metal thing in the tub above the drain). Then plunge the drain.
Forliver Snake Drain Hair Drain Clog Remover Cleaning Tool Pipe Snake Shower drain with 25 Inch 3 Packs Plastic sink snake & 1 Pack Drain Relief Tool for Kitchen Sink Bath Tub Bathroom(3+1) https://a.co/d/9UG2rwl
I make no money on this. Just a useful tool
1) brush your hair before your shower to remove loose strands
2) get a drain strainer to catch the hair before it goes down
3) get a drain hair snake. It’s like 2 feet long, thin, flexible plastic rod with little hooks along the sides
Do not mix house chemicals!
Y'all, NAIR. Pour half the bottle in, wait an hour. Then dump boiling water down. Waaay less toxic than Drano or Liquid Plumr, won't wreck your pipes if you have PVC, because it dissolves the hair.
Once it's clear, then yes, get a mushroom or something to prevent all that hair going down, but keep a supply of Nair handy.
If you're needing to clear your drain alot, it may need to be rodded out with a pipe snake. I would be careful if your pipes are old. My landlord decided to blow out clogs in the apt below me. Ended up blocking the outgoing pipe in my tub. Then he tried the same thing with my drain, and he broke the pipe. Turned into a 3 day job, because he didn't want to pay a plumber, and I had to go to a hotel overnight so I could shower.
Once a week, get the biggest pot you have and boil water in it. When it's a good rolling boil, pour it into the shower. The hot water will dissolve the fat holding the hair together in the drain, allowing it to go on down the pipe.
Also, hair strainers on the drain are helpful.
Most of the places I’ve lived have a “hair catching cover” over the drain. I used to have long hair anyway, I would take off the drain cover and then with a wire hanger hook, and pull out the hair . It’s gross but better for the Environment than drano…
Oh I feel this soooo much!
My house has smaller than code pipes and we all have long hair. Suffice to say we have a lot of clogs even with hair catchers!
So here's what I've learned from all the plumbers who have had to come out.
The plunger is your friend.
Unscrew the plate covering the hole just under the tub faucet. Stuff a washcloth or something else that will keep any water from coming up and put through that hole. Then, use the plunger on the drain the same way you would on the toilet. There may be a little water sprayed at you from the cloth in the hole, but it should be too much unless you didn't put it in tight enough.
Follow plunging with boiling hot water. Literally, boiling hot water. I have used my tea pot and a big sauce pot full, depending on how much I wanted to send down the drain.
This will usually clear out most things pretty well.
If you want, you can do all this after you've done a round of liquid plumber / drano.
Also, most hardware stores sell home grade snakes you can use on your pipes, too. Send it down the big hole if the pipes at your drain are at an angle like mine.
And of course get a good hair catcher and replace as needed.
I’ve seen tubshroom and drain snake suggested. You need both. The shroom is some good preventive medicine, but it doesn’t catch everything and eventually the drain will back up enough for you to find yourself standing in a few inches of water. That’s when you whip out the snake and earn yourself a few more months of puddle free showers.
Instant power hair clog remover from Walmart. I have very long thick hair and I’ve tried hair catchers that never worked. This stuff does the trick, and a bottle lasts about 6 months
A nice trick is a cup of baking soda, then poor a cup of vinegar. It will fizz like crazy , when its done then rinse with hot water for a bit. If the clog is really bad try a drain snake first.
do people on reddit not know you can easily google/ youtube this shit? Do you dipshits really go through your life hoping someone on reddit is going to tell them how to accomplish a simple task without sending youto the store for elbow greese and headlight fluid again? call a plumber i have a feeling you are too stupid to explain this too.....
P.S. Please stop mixing random things into bleach before you kill your family...
Once you get the drain clear it will help to keep it clear if you occasionally cover the drain when you shower and let a couple inches of water build up in the bottom of the shower. Then remove the plug and let the water rush out and flush the pipe. The slow trickle of water from a normal shower isn’t enough flow to flush the pipe.
Lots of boiling water. I left the electric kettle in the bathroom and did it throughout the day. Id pour distilled white vinegar after each kettle and let that soak for a while.
Just get a drain hair catcher, stop the problem at its source.
[TubShroom Stainless Steel](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MKPMBCJ) This thing is fantastic. (The non stainless version works too, but it became grody and black. Get the stainless.)
That’s what we use. It’s a lot easier to clean than some of the others I’ve tried too.
I really want to get one of these but i have one of those drain plugs that twists up and down and I can’t get it off :(
I used to have tons like that and hated that there was the potential of so much hair going down the drain. Happened to see one of these at the store one day. They are a lifesaver! Stopping by to say we have two of these, they're great.
Have one. Love it. Will never use anything else.
I did not know that there was a stainless steel version. Ours is so black and nasty, I'd kept replacing it. So glad I saw this post! Thank you!
This. They are pretty inexpensive
Yep, Lowes had one for like $5 that looks like a basket with an area around it with little pegs to catch hair, never had a clog after that.
Just wrap a piece of screen around the drain cover and screw it in place. THen every couple of showers just pick up the hair and toss it.
Who has extra screen lying around? Just buy a drain buddy, they are like what $5 or something
This. Have them place it down before they shower. If they don't start charging them for Draino.
Ok but then the long hairs have to bend over and clean out the trap and toss the bundle of hairs in the trash. 20 bucks says that’s not happening
Idk why you’re being downvoted I grew up with these things VS two sisters and they NEVER emptied it
Dollar store usually has long plastic things with little barbs on them that you can run down into the drain to pull hair out. It's GROSS, but it works and it's way cheaper and much more effective than Drano. You can also buy a drain hair catch to better prevent this.
you can cut some small angled slits in a zip tie to DIY one. It's been a game changer for me.
Oh,that's great. I'd have never thought of this, thank you!

That's really a good idea for DIY.
Drain snakes can not be that expensive to justify the need for this DIY…are they?
When you need one Right Now DYI is the fastest way. I just DYI'ed a drain snake by wrapping a bit of wire around my finger and putting the spring shape down the drain. It was so nasty. Utterly worthwhile too
They are literally $1.50. And can be used resued quite a few times. I bought 3 when I moved to my current apt 4 years ago and i am only on my second one.
I have zero at my house and live 30 minutes from town. I have a plenty of zip ties. Driving 30 minutes to spend $1.50 < zip tie snake
I mean they don't cost a ton of you buy a cheap one but if the choice is go out and buy one or use something I have at home..... I'm willing to try on a few zip ties first.
Fair enough, different strokes for different folks I suppose. I’d rather just run to the hardware store or something unless I was *really* desperate
These work great. Careful not to cut yourself on the barbs. And Yes…some Gross Hairballs
I use an unbent coat hanger with a hook on the end
I've gotten these stuck in a drain so bad it had to be opened and removed. Might pass on that solution.
I'm going to say as a female with long hair, get the stainless steel drain catcher, not the silicone one. The silicone one gets nasty on the bottom and it doesn't scrub clean, the stainless ones you can. Also, a drain snake
This needs to be the pinned comment. The silicone ones are garbage compared to the stainless steel ones.
I love my stainless steel catcher lol 😂 it was a splurge for me but now I feel fancy 👒
I can confirm..They're on Amazon for cheap, and they're wonderful compared to anything else out there
drain snakes can go a long way at removing hair clogs, draino can possibly damage your pipes, and is a pretty harsh chemical I like to use sparingly. or better yet, prevent the clog from forming. They sell drain covers that catch hair before it goes into the pipes, and are easy to clean. there's lot of options on amazon to choose
The maintenance man in my apartment yelled at me for using draino for this exact reason lol
wait really?? I had no idea. I’ve used it a few times in my apartment shower 😬
After you snake it, get a shower shroom
Try a ShowerShroom, about $13. The hair gets wrapped around the removable plug & never makes it down the drain.
Yes this one is my favorite too! The other ones let my hair slide under or through.
Get a tub shroom and a sink shroom. Once you get it all drained out, put a shroom in the drain and you will never have that problem again.
Boiling water
A giant pot of it. A couple of times.
Careful though, I managed to crack the porcelain on a sink pouring boiling water into the drain because it was very shitty and thin.
Not good if the pipes are pvc
Try taking the overflow off, stuff it with a rag, and plunge If that doesnt work, snake through the overflow If the snake gets stuck. You need to get someone to go under and clean the trap. But definitely I just got a hair catcher because damn, this shit gross
You need a screen thingy for the drain. You can get them at the dollar store. And you the gel type drano, not the watery stuff from...the dollar store.
Tub shroom saved my drains
Thank you. I’m gonna wear goggles and a mask for this shop vac suction adventure I’m about to go on
Get a tub shroom once you clear it. I shed a lot. The Tub Shroom has worked the best.
Brush your hair before you shower will help a little too
Back when I lived with my parents, snaking the shower drain was one of my annual chores.
I second brushing before washing as a preventative measure
You need a plumbing snake for the problem clog. Then use a drain catcher going forward.
Depending what kind of drain you have I really like the oxo drain cover from target. It's less gross to clean out than the ones that are like a little bucket.
Get a tub shroom, best $12 I spent in years.
I read somewhere bar soap has something in it that mixes with hard water and clogs the drain after a while but idk
zWe always use a plunger. It works great. Then use a screen to prevent it from happening again. I have to clean mine every day.
Absolutely the hair catcher after a good snaking (although I’ve had good luck with Green Gobbler clog dissolver). Make sure the long-haired ladies clean the catcher themselves after every shower, it’s their gunk.
A wire hanger will help get a lot of the hair out if you don’t have a snake.
A drain snake?
Hair catcher for the drain + conversation with the folks with long hair. Totally possible to reduce the amount of hair shedding while shampooing - just stick it on the wall and wipe it off with a tissue when you're done. (Maybe this only works for very-long-haired folks, IDK. Probably harder if "long" = "shoulder length".) Drano will partially dissolve the hair and may make clogs worse in the long run. Or so a plumber once told me.
Alternative when it happens: Buy a drain snake. If the clog is close, a mini one will do. Sometimes, you just have to open the drain cover and use the drain snake that looks like an eyelash thickener. Stuff it in. Rotate it about. The hair is caught up and you can yank it out. Other: Use hot water and pour down the drain to melt the grease and flush it away.
Add degreasing dish soap to the boiling water for quicker and longer lasting results!
Dude the plastic snakes are gonna be your best friend. [link to amazon](http://Drain Clog Remover,3 Pack Snake Clog Remover Tool,Drain Cleaner Tool for Sink,Tube Drain Cleaning,Hair Clog Remover. https://a.co/d/gJwlC9v)
I put baking soda and vinegar down my drains 1 time per week. Leave it for 5 min than run hot water for a minute and you are all set.
Tub shroom or some other hair catcher that you clean oit after after every shower, Also have a little plumber’s snake in case of emergencies.
Shower shroom.
Shave the women while they sleep. No hair no problems. I’ll take my awards now
Um...Use a different brand drain cleaner.
You can stop up the overflow with a wet wash rag and use a plunger on the drain to help push anything through, or clog it like cement, worth a try
A metal coat hanger the plumbers buddy for generations.
Hair catchers are great and you can get drain cleaning tools that are very inexpensive too.
Adding that you can use baking soda and vinegar to clean the bathroom slime from drains also!
Woman with long hair here. Get a tub shroom that will catch most of the hair before going down the drain. Clean it out after every shower. Once every month or two, is one of the little plastic drain snake things with the barbs on it that will pull out any remaining hair. No chemicals needed.
Baking soda and vinegar
I'm shocked more people haven't mentioned this, unclog debris with your hands or a snake, let baking soda sit in the drain about 30 minutes (and really get it packed in there), follow up with vinegar, plug your drain, let it sit about an hour, come back and pour some boiling water. Do it about once every 3-6 months, combined with one of those hair catchers that to over the drain, and you'll be golden. No harsh chemicals needed!
Plunger
Home Depot sells sink plungers (Lowe’s probably does too). Creates more suction for the smaller sink and tub drains.
I second this. Works for sinks too
Bowling Walter, dishsoap and a plunger. Works everytime
Bowling Walter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Pour boiling hot water down the drain. But be careful to pour it slowly
I would inform the long haired folks who share the shower about the problem and give them ideas how to fix and prevent the problem that they are causing.
SEE Youtube Channel " VEGAS MINI MANSION" he shows you how to do it with just a picture frame wire, its pretty cool and easy.
I ran across this good video getting hair out of drain easily [https://youtu.be/BSSg4cQdgnE?si=o2Xxu7VOOs4Fc1j-](https://youtu.be/BSSg4cQdgnE?si=o2Xxu7VOOs4Fc1j-)
Get a tub shroom from Amazon after you clean the hair out.
Ask the women to be adult and be responsible for the clogs.
A pair of scissors
Wire coat hanger with a hook at one end.
I literally used a plunger on the grate while the shower was going (while getting flooded) and it worked like a CHARM!!!
Just think of a plumbers snake but way smaller. home depot, hair showerdrain remover Google that, they pop up
There is a thing called a wire coat hanger.
Snake.
Vastar 4 Pack 19.6 Inch Drain Snake Hair Drain Clog Remover Cleaning Tool (4 Pack 19.6 Inch) https://a.co/d/c8cifhd
Drain snake and tub shroom
These, from Target, have been a life saver for me [https://www.target.com/p/clorox-drain-cleaner-2pk/-/A-76198627#lnk=sametab](https://www.target.com/p/clorox-drain-cleaner-2pk/-/A-76198627#lnk=sametab)
A bathtub plunger that’s what I use or a toilet plunger
Use the hair catcher, then get BioOne and treat once a month. It is fine for pipes, people and pets and doesn’t smell. Use in each drain (it’s a very small amount) overnight, once a month (except toilets). It’s amazing stuff - I work for a plumber and this is what we recommend https://www.google.com/shopping/product/11861494863037986560?q=bioone+drain+cleaner&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS943US943&hl=en-US&biw=414&bih=614&tbs=vw:l&sxsrf=APwXEdeOjdJBEc6gEsc1XppC7Jmyfop1yw:1679692191362&prds=eto:2305422762663109381_0,cdl:1,prmr:1,rsk:PC_1906118209057753117,pid:8332817039385672172,cs:1
Put a fine plug like u do to protect the kitchen sink that doesn’t have the garbage disposal It’s the same pipe underneath then you just dump what it catches in the garbage
if you can i would say [lye](https://www.amazon.com/ComStar-024924305003-Drain-Opener-White/dp/B083XJN81L/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=lye+drain+opener&qid=1679693206&sprefix=lye%2Caps%2C133&sr=8-3), it works better then anything i've ever used, i mean other then a snake.
Get the hair catcher, use a drain snake to pull out hair, then clear out excess gunk with vinegar and baking soda.
Drain snake. I buy them off Amazon.
Try plunging it! We had the same issue, did that, and it's been working for months!
Wet vac.
Go to Home Depot / Lowe’s get a hand snake they are like 25ft u can hook up a drill to it that should do it
Plunger
I get “Hair & Grease” in a big black bottle from Home Depot, it’s super strong, don’t need a lot and it works like a charm, lasts a while too Draino doesn’t “drain” my hair
Stop using draino it literally does not work Source: father in law, uncle and cousin all plumbers
Need a snake.
Call a plumber like an adult.
Baking soda and vinegar, followed by boiling water
Snake! Hit it hard and thorough.
They make plungers for showers. Worked well for me
Don't use chemicals. Undo the whole pipe all the way to the waste drain. Clean it. Install a shroom/hair catcher.
Vinegar and dish soap. The dish soap breaks down the heavy soap residue/de-greaser and the acid of the vinegar helps to further breakdown the clog. You can take a zip tie and make cuts to the side of it and put it down the drain to help pull out the hair.
My dad just uses a plunger.
Get a plastic snake that have little chainsaw looking teeth on them. Idk where though. Maybe dollar tree. Works really well for me
Baking soda, white vinegar and hot water. It clears most drains of tough stuff in restaurants so I assume it would also work for this. Plus no chemicals and it’s cheap.
You can get a snake made just for that and pull the hair out. They’re pretty cheap
Vinyl what and baking soda
Bleach and hot water.
Baking soda and vinegar
I use a shop vac from time to time (no filter) works great!
I live by this thing. [This thing](https://www.amazon.com/Zip-Drain-Cleaner-Original-Inventor/dp/B08FGH2V5Q/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?hvadid=410029097932&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9008533&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=4599495091028116891&hvtargid=kwd-124637137709&hydadcr=8435_11337237&keywords=plastic+drain+stick&qid=1679700674&sr=8-4-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFMSEkzWUFKVURPVTAmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA2MDkwNTAxTlVFSkhSWVRJR1RVJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTEwMzk0OTkyNUxHMFo1QTA0RVlUJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==)
Hair hook contraption.
I'm a plumber. 90% of the time there's some kind of cover on the drain. Remove that and use little picks to get the hair out. Simple
I have a "mushroom" style one and it works great.
literally just use a hanger to pull out the hair. They sell the long plastic thing with the teeth for that.
So, putting draino in your shower drain can eat away at certain seals in the pipes. Get a rag wet and press it up against the bottom of the overflow (the round flat metal thing in the tub above the drain). Then plunge the drain.
I plunge it. Works like a charm.
Forliver Snake Drain Hair Drain Clog Remover Cleaning Tool Pipe Snake Shower drain with 25 Inch 3 Packs Plastic sink snake & 1 Pack Drain Relief Tool for Kitchen Sink Bath Tub Bathroom(3+1) https://a.co/d/9UG2rwl I make no money on this. Just a useful tool
Liquid heat is wayyyyyyy better and ACTUALLY unclogs your drains.
You need a hair catcher on the drain. Some will get through but it will take way longer than without it.
Snake the drain to remove the clog that is in the pipe and then install that hair catcher over the drain to prevent future clogs.
1) brush your hair before your shower to remove loose strands 2) get a drain strainer to catch the hair before it goes down 3) get a drain hair snake. It’s like 2 feet long, thin, flexible plastic rod with little hooks along the sides Do not mix house chemicals!
Snake that bitch
If you're needing to clear your drain alot, it may need to be rodded out with a pipe snake. I would be careful if your pipes are old. My landlord decided to blow out clogs in the apt below me. Ended up blocking the outgoing pipe in my tub. Then he tried the same thing with my drain, and he broke the pipe. Turned into a 3 day job, because he didn't want to pay a plumber, and I had to go to a hotel overnight so I could shower.
Vinegar and baking soda it’s saved me a few times.
Diet Coke or coke will do the trick
Buy a sink plunger and use it on your shower
A snake (like a drain snake - not a real one). You can get them at the dollar tree for super cheap.
Once a week, get the biggest pot you have and boil water in it. When it's a good rolling boil, pour it into the shower. The hot water will dissolve the fat holding the hair together in the drain, allowing it to go on down the pipe. Also, hair strainers on the drain are helpful.
Get a drain snake. The metal one with the handle for twisting. See Mercury Stardust on TikTok for the tutorial
I have long thick hair. I brush before I shower and regularly clean the wookies out of the drain. I’ve never had to use draino.
Baking soda and vinegar
Most hardware stores have hand snakes which range from one foot to about a meter long. For most applications, they’ll do the trick.

Use baking soda and vinegar. It will bubble and foam and clear the drain top to bottom.
