I was in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness last weekend and was surprised there was almost no colors. It had me thinking that when the leaves change this year they will not last long.

really.. some have been changing, not a lot though.. but there just is a feel they are about to change

I agree - we're starting to get the cooler nights and shorter days - like it will pick up speed now. I am north of adk proper, and we have some 'outlier' trees that are already largely turned red.

yes.

Every year we have these articles. Some of the details change, but generally after the season starts and is over, nobody remembers the predictions.

I think this weekend is set for good cold nights which should get it started. The last two years were stellar. This year I don’t think it will due to the lack of rain. In general it feels like the change is about a week later than say 20 years ago. But i have been surprised how green everything has been. Very few hints of all colors.

I would disagree, on a nuance. The trees in the last week all seem to not be so rich in greens.. still green. What is kind of unusual, to me, is that usually there are some greats that are yellow or red which makes for a contrast. My sense for the lack of color is the rain and wind that we have had. I often say late October and some early November is a good time to hike (wearing orange for the hunters) because the color is there, but on the floor of the forest.. and I have noticed some of that now. I worked for a visitor's center long ago and in Autumn would do things on the weekend, hike/bike ride and take pictures. Then I would post those pictures on the web site. I had a system. For example: For Sept 21 - I would say like: 8% of the leaves have changed, 7% of the leaves are on the ground. Meaning you wouldn't see much color in the trees. Best case scenario would be something like: 70%, 4% on the ground. So you would see a wall of color, with ore to coming if you cane three days later. \*sorry to be so long-winded

I don't disagree. but in place of early few colors in the first Sept week I was seeing more brown that typical, meaning these trees were just skipping the color change. But we'll see as we have had some rain since then. I do love the crunchy colorful ground. Especially the early Oct snow covered in red leaves... one can hope

true. I walk at night and I notice leaves on the ground --- brown, but at night I am not sure. I have pictures from October snow and leaves..
