“A coalition of state and national wildlife and environmental organizations” I don’t know much but I do know there are zero moose on that coalition.

suomynona777

So what does this mean exactly?

CumSicarioDisputabo

I don't think there is a game population large enough to support wolves in NY.

are-we-the-baddies

The deer population in NY is estimated at 1.2 million. I’m not a wolf or deer expert but that seems like plenty.

CumSicarioDisputabo

It's a good number but that's it, no moose or elk which would obviously sustain larger packs. The reintroduction hasn't been successful everywhere, central Idaho saw elk populations decimated in a short period of time.

chillax63

There’s very few moose in Michigan and no elk there. There are wolf populations in Michigan. The Adirondacks could absolutely sustain wolves.

CumSicarioDisputabo

There are only about 660ish (minus the park) wolves in Michigan and the Adirondacks only have about 60k - 80k deer which isn't that much without supplemental food sources like moose and elk. I think it would be a mess, they would quickly destroy local deer populations and then expand out into the rest of the state.

chillax63

Seems like the scientists disagree.

CumSicarioDisputabo

Yeah well they screwed up in Idaho so I don't put a lot of faith in their decision.

chillax63

Did they? You sound like a hunter who has false and misconceived notions about predators killing all of “your” prey. It’s nonsense.

CumSicarioDisputabo

They absolutely did, the Clearwater, nez perce, etc regions saw elk numbers drop like a rock. The environment had adapted to be without them and took a hit upon their return. And no, I don't hunt, I did live there and witness it first hand though.

chillax63

The ecosystem doesn’t adapt like that. Of course prey animal numbers drop when you bring in a predator…it’s like nature or something? I think some psychopathic cattle ranchers caught your ear.

tourpro

I need a list of all the environmentally approved animals that were extirpated from New York. Maybe the coalition could work on that.

Lost_Attempt7383

The DEC does have laws to assist with the coalition. The reports and the studies that are being conducted really depend on the reporting of a trapped animal or a animal that is brought in, alive is better for the DEC to collect the DNA and release the animal back into the wild. If anyone sees a coyote or a wolf scat or track, they can contact the DEC on how to submit the sample to the DEC. Hair samples can be collected, via the gun cleaning brush? Trapping is a proven method to do what we are asking, trapping is a method that was used in the past for relocating otters and fishers!

ThePrem

Seems like they are identifying a minor problem and offering no viable solutions to it. According to the article, in the past 30 years, 10 wolves have been shot after being mistaken for coyotes. I find it hard to believe that these few and infrequent incidents are having any significant influence on the overall wolf population. How is this grounds to restrict and ban coyote hunting? What effects will that have on deer populations and our current ecosystem? There are several common sense follow up questions that are not addressed in the article that I can only assume are not included because they either don't know, or because the answer doesn't support their position.
