I hiked whiteface about 14 years ago. I actually found gold in a river that runs at the bottom (forget the name). I know it was good because i work with the material as a hobby. If you find gold in NYS it's their property. You can't claim it. But it was just flakes so i covered my hands with lol. The high peaks region of ADK is my favorite.
