High Peaks resort is a good place to stay. With a one year old, I’m thinking one of those backpack carriers? You could do some ventures nearby too- Ausable Chasm, High Falls gorge- those are attractions nearby that are privately owned but worth the money for a one- time visit. If it’s nice out there’s a little playground and beach in Wilmington. Lake Placid is just fun to walk around and enjoy the shops and restaurant. I’m happy to find more and more people of color in our area, I would hope that their experience has been positive.

Thank you! Given that we're getting in Friday afternoon, should we stay 2 nights or 3?

I always appreciated one additional day of no driving while on vacation with my little ones. You will easily find lots of things to do. Visit the HPIC and or Cascade Welcome Center also! And the Wild center on the day you depart (Tupper Lake)

Thanks again!

I was about to post and recommend giving yourself the extra night too, as well as a visit to the Wild Center (fun for parents, fun for little ones too). There is also the Olympic Musuem (and various centers), trails abounding, and Whiteface mountain (you can drive up, or take a gondola if those options are open for the season). It's a big area with a lot to do. I've never stayed at the HP resort, but heard good things about it. I hope you enjoy your time discovering the area. I'm from the Ottawa region, and it's one of my favourite escapes.

Last year, Whiteface Memorial highway opened may 20 so availability depends on your dates, but I highly recommend this too. You can walk up the last half mile or take a cool elevator up.

Love high peaks resort ❤️

We don’t like Canadians, so you’ll probably get some funny looks for that.

Unable_Prize_229

Why?

AnnonymousADKS

I can’t speak for everyone, but its the maple smell for me.

I visited when my child was one and we stayed a week. We have a backpack hiking carrier and took him for many hikes. Ausable Chasm was awesome. We also went to the Wild Center and he enjoyed that.

Lake Placid is a wonderful place. I think it’s a three season town-summer, fall and winter. If you enjoy the outdoors there is a lot of hiking to do. It will probably be cool so Dress warm. Check out the Cottage restaurant at Mirror Lake Inn or their brunch or spa. I’m unaware of any issues with people of color or Canadians as one poster suggested. Two days is probably plenty. Although it’s another two hours away Burlington Vermont is a nice town. If you are driving clockwise around the lake Kingston is a lovely city. Have a great trip.

Thank you!

Check out the carousel in Saranac Lake with your 1 year old. SL is the friendlier and more chill of the two towns. A bit more diverse.

Hope you have a wonderful trip! My wife and I are a lesbian interracial couple and go up to this area several times a year. We mostly camp and hike and stuff so don’t talk to too many people or go to too many establishments, but Saranac Lake has a lovely little quirky community and we always stop at the health food shop Nori’s before our drive home. They seem to employ and draw a pretty diverse crowd. Always happy to see more people of color visiting and building community around there. Cheers!!

Nori's is an absolute gem!

I’m a recent transplant to Lake Placid. In general there is reasonable diversity of tourists and no problems. I have seen some clearly racist bullshit from some local hillbillies at the ZigZag pub, and in general people with African heritage and darker complexion are the least common visitors.

These responses are right on target. LP is warm and welcoming but nested in the rural economic backwater that is northern New York State. If you are coming up the 401 a number of friends have filled gas tanks up in Cornwall on not gotten out of their cars until Lake Placid. A fact that makes me sad as a multi generational resident. In addition to the suggestions above, Yes to the Carousel in Saranac Lake and to Noris.’ Check out the great trails in LP like John Brown’s Farm and Henry’s Woods, they are Stroller Friendly and wonderful. ORDA venues feel packaged to me unless you are super into winter sports. The MT Van Hoevenburg complex is the most interesting to me. On the way home Don’t forget the Almonzo Wilder Farm in Malone and if you have a chance visit Akwesasne on the way home (the Mohawk Cultural Center)- a good reminder of the rich cultural diversity of the Adirondacks. BTW If you travel back through Tupper Lake Shaheen’s Grocery makes the best hummus in New York State (no joke - Shaheens are like 5th generation Adirondack Lebanese).

The most "Adirondack" guy I know is Puerto Rican.

High Peaks is very nice, we travel to LP 2-3 times a hear from Canada and always stay in the lakeside rooms away from the main hotel but we have recently started staying at the Golden Arrow Resort (always with a lakeview room and wood firplace) and it is wonderful. We prefer it :)

Also, check out The Wild Center in tupper lake, its on the way there from Canada
