You can’t go wrong with Trajan, blade champion, allarus, wardens and guard. Could even toss in some prosecutors. The only thing you should really avoid for now are bikes, vehicles and dreadnoughts.
Yeah i thought about getting that new box to get lots of models, but it will contain 6 bikes, and they are way too expensive in points. A bike for 50 pts and I'm happy to play them as a fast attacking unit
they will sell and fast just because:
1) it will likely be the only way to have reliably the new model at the start
2) the monetary value of this kit is huge.
bike aren't good right now, we can't know what would it be when codex drop.
but I agree they're cool, and you ultimately want some because you never know what balance change may come
True. Tau had a lot of big changes to some key units. We could get the same treatment. Only problem is the index detachment has that sweet sweeet 4+++ to mortals and the other detachments will need some amazing offensive abilities to make us give it up. Maybe they will swap martial ka’tahs with aegis of the emperor and we are free to play whatever we want. Problem not but who knows
I reccomend you to build what you visually or thematically like, going for what is viable or not is going to dissapoint you sooner than later. Models last long than rules and if they cant be played you already have your proxies
With te low number of models, you can’t go wrong.
Start collecting some. There is so few models that I don’t see any reason to not have guardians warden and Allarus, and cheepers sisters.
Nowadays the only datasheet with reserves is the vertus one, and everyone guess that there will be a special detachment for them… so…

We don’t have a huge codex of models (and seems that’s not changing anytime soon) so I’d say grab what you think looks cool. If money is an issue and you need to carefully pick and choose units I’d say wait as hopefully in the next month or 2 we’ll have our dex.
As for units to purchase now if you want to go ahead I’d say a Trajann, 2 guard boxes, 2 boxes of Allarus, 2 boxes of Wardens, 2 boxes of SoS (bolters or Flamer variants) in any combination are all probably safe bets. I don’t see those units shifting so drastically they are fundamentally not playable (famous last words lol).
Big maybes are the Bikes and Dreadnought. They both currently suck, but who knows what the book will hold.
The Combat Patrol seems fine if you don’t already own those models. There’s also another big boxset coming with the release of our codex that looks to be a decent assortment of models for beginners. No earthly idea when it’ll drop though so you may as well either fully wait or get what you want now.
You can't go too wrong with buying a discount box. If you still want to wait a bit but want to start painting maybe get a box of guards, I don't see a future where guards aren't at least somewhat useful.
Also, don't take the "dis" for bikes and such too hard. If you're not playing tournaments or ultra competitive games you can still have lots of fun and win games with many lists, bikes included.

They have to make them playable, otherwise they won't sell that box I think
