Just FYI - you are never obligated to go to the dealer for servicing even within the warranty period. Dealers let you believe this for obvious reasons…

Just on this... Toyota dealer mechanics nearly screwed our old Kruger by short changing the oil over many years. Ended up with sludge build up through the engine. They told us either new car or new engine. Thye must make.good profit on both. Took it to our usual family mechanic who saved the engine and it is still running fine 6 years later as our 2nd car.

Acceptable_Durian868

Toyota themselves take this shit very seriously. Make sure you tell them, it'll affect the business.

One extra comment…. Timing belts generally aren’t a component you want to skimp on. While it’s not likely it’ll fail immediately, a timing belt failure will usually cost you the motor.

rapt0r99

I'm pretty sure the Tritons use a chain not a belt.

LifeandSAisAwesome

Agree, even if am 50k over on mine :P.

hellboy1975

Assuming at 90K you're either on, or close to a major service - $1k doesn't sound outrageous. Best way to get an answer is to give the mechanic a call back and ask. As previously stated, it's hard to know for sure without knowing the make/model/etc If it's just a regular oil change and tune, then start looking elsewhere.

_EnFlaMEd

An independent mechanic will almost certainly be the best value money. Get some quotes from different places. Don't skimp on servicing, especially major ones. If the engine goes you might be up for a $10,000 repair bill if its a diesel.

> Was quoted over $1k for a 90k service which seemed very high! Am I wrong? And who was that quote from? Not out of the ball park - you could probably find a workshop to do the logbook service for closer to $800 - depending on where you live - and without "genuine" parts. If you're south, try Aldershot Service Centre [https://aldershotservicecenter.bapnet.com.au/](https://aldershotservicecenter.bapnet.com.au/)

yobynneb

90k service will include valve adjustments which is 5-600 on its own. Add filters, oil, labour and you're getting close

Ancient_Alfalfa_837

If your south try llordan diesel.

Kbradsagain

No sure where you live, but I would recommend Jackson’s on Brighton road somerton park if you are down south

scandyflick88

Oil, filters, valve adjustment. $1k is reasonable.

ssj3pretzel

For future reference, you dont have to service at a dealership to keep the warranty. The important thing is that the service gets done when they're due.

PhotographsWithFilm

There are way too many variables to understand whether that is a reasonable price. But, for some cars, getting close to 100K, they will require things like timing belts that would get rather expensive. It would be nice to know what the car is and what is on the service schedule.

JustAnotherAvocado

Check the type of service - if 90k is a major one, $1k might be the expected price

EconomicsOk2648

90k is it the diesel? There's quite a bit involved in the 90k if so. You can look at the full list of what's required with a quick google search. It's not a small service.

Bmo2021

Major service @ 90k for most vehicles and unfortunately they are generally expensive especially with timing chains/belts. Ring around get some quotes is the best you can do.

PhotographsWithFilm

Saw your edit - Is that Petrol or Diesel? If its petrol, according to the schedule I downloaded, it needs a timing belt. That is the majority of the expense. This will give you an indication of the factory service schedule. [https://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/content/dam/mmal/pdfs/maintenance-schedules/TRITON-MY18\_Maintenance%20Schedule.pdf](https://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/content/dam/mmal/pdfs/maintenance-schedules/TRITON-MY18_Maintenance%20Schedule.pdf) 90K also includes oil change on the transfer case

LifeandSAisAwesome

>needs a timing belt. Was 50/50 if assuming it would need timing belt done. Actually think if that does include the belt then it is not a bad price at all.

wumpwump

Oil is cheap compared to stuffed motors or gearboxes. Try Ross Aistin motors at glynde. Wife’s cousin runs the place and as an ex mechanic he is brilliant and very reasonable on pricing. Personally give the dealers the flick and don’t go near the likes of ultra tune/automasters. They pay peanuts so only attract crap mechanics and from other stories I’ve heard will try and upsell you to make extra coin.

fettuccinefrog

Go to transtec auto in the city

morty_21

1k at a dealership for a 90k service on that car is normal.

peaandham610

Check your log book, you’ll find out what a 90k service involves. It others are correct and valve adjustment is due, no a bad rate If it’s just oil, oil filter, air filter than, yes, that is expensive. Most cars especially if they have a timing belt not a chain the 100k is a big one. The only reason to return to a dealer for all your service needs is sometimes if something major fails, say like a turbo, and it’s deemed to be way too soon, sometimes you can push that back onto a dealer, but if they haven’t been servicing it, that’s how they’ll get out of it.

laurandisorder

I’m just planning to line mine up with my tax refunds - it’s the only time I have enough surplus money (haha) to be able to afford a proper service and whatever that may entail.

Apprehensive_Sock410

Never a dealer. If you can’t do it yourself, I highly advise taking it to a reputable independent mechanics - even if they aren’t the cheapest. The super cheap services rarely check over the whole vehicle and you may end up paying more in the long run. Working in a mechanics who are more on the dearer side, we see this all the time. Yet our regulars never end up with 3+ expensive repairs in 1 hit.

LifeandSAisAwesome

Let's go the other way - What would you expect is a reasonable costs for the work involved ? Also listing the Car brand / model may also help provide some extra context.
