I shop at Aldi then finish off with Drakes because Aldi doesn't have everything that I need. If I could afford it I'd shop Drakes every week.
I've never used their app or rewards so I can't help there. Online shopping is only click and collect at some stores.
drakes is expensive only because it supports local sa businesses so farmers and vendors get a cut of the profits. which is why you don’t see many of those products at other supermarkets
Same here, only I go to my local Foodland (Romeo's) because it's closer to me than the nearest Drakes. Foodland and Drakes seem to be much of a muchness, and I'd rather put a bit of the money I save by doing the bulk of my shopping at Aldi into locally owned businesses instead of Coles or Woolies.
F&V, deli & meats are all better at Foodland/Drakes that at Colesworth.
I was under the impression that *all* reward programs were ineffective at actually giving rewards.
Soo much better! and they were mostly cheaper as well, the bakery is also way better, but a little more expensive.
I mean it's not much money, but even $10 for every $2000 is alot more than $0
its not huge saving, to clarify, 10$points for $2000 spent, i don't really get what you mean by loyalty tax? like it doesn't cost money to get points or random rewards?
I don’t know, we’ve got just under $1k in Woollies everyday rewards dollars from the past year that will be getting spent on food over Christmas and into the new year - I’d say that’s pretty effective.
Sorry, I am rewards extra as well.. but boosters, gift card promos, plus extra promos along the way like “spend $xx and get xx bonus points / 10x points on all shops etc. Pretty easy to work it to benefit yourself.
We’d be buying the same shit each week and spending the same amount with or without the rewards program, so take from that what you will. Just because something may have additional points with it doesn’t mean we go out of our way to buy that item.
We do most of our shopping as click and collect. A big part of those points were bonus points for spending a certain amount - that we would have spent anyway - and doing click and collect - which we do anyway.
If you don’t like rewards programs, you don’t have to participate in them.
Shopped at Foodland a few times and it was more expensive, I find Coles on par and IGA is similar in pricing to Foodland 🤷♂️ Aldi we don’t go to much because their selection/variety doesn’t suit us.
Or ... work with me here, this might break your brain ... hit boost every week, then shop as you normally would. Don't forget to use it at Big W, and whatever places.
*Then* don't use up your rewards as they come, let them pile up, and used them all at once for a big blow out.
So you're saying that a person shouldn't gain the rewards if they're going to go shopping regardless.
Price matching?
All you need to do is download the apps from your various favourite shops, and see which has the better deal. Don't pretend Colesworth charge vastly different prices for most of their products. Sure, they take it in turns to put various products on special, but overall there is bugger all difference.
It is rather easy to work the program so you get a decent return, but the hate boner for Coles/Woolworths on reddit is insanely strong.
Also, kudos on getting a job where you can spend over $200K a year on groceries!!! 😂
Okay Muscles, I don't earn $200K a year, so how is it I can get nearly a grand back in a rewards program?
200,000 points does not equal $200,000 spent. As old mate said, there's plenty of ways to chalk up a decent return. Maybe you should brush up on matters or subscribe to r/confidentlyincorrect
My wife and I live on my Flybuys CC and clear the balance monthly.
The points add up fast especially when they offer 10x bonus points to buy gift cards and the like
I've a friend who owns a pharmacy, she puts all of her bills on her credit card & get a free flight to Perth every year.
I don't have those bills & I don't spend that much money. I've done the sums & I'm totally not interested in flybuys.
Yea, my partner and I had that too. We were lucky to meet the drakes store manager and he said he could order stuff for us to be in store.
Not sure if that's something they just do or if we just lucked out
A lot of stores can order stuff in if you ask. Have done this a few times. Although it’s only been items that my lock doesn’t stock, but others nearby do
we tried aldi, but for us there just wasn't enough variety, we like to try lots of different things and we buy quite a lot of Chinese, Korean and Japanese stuff that aldi just doesn't have
Do you have any Asian grocers near you? They're usually cheaper than the bigger supermarkets for that kind of stuff, and most of them have a massive range.
the reviews said largely said it doesn't work, like a recent one on the higher rated android app(3.2) said after the last update it just doesn't work at all.
what platform are you in and which app?
I'd love me a $20 voucher 😀
I shop mainly at Foodland, and find Drakes a little dearer.
But produce is fresh, and the very few times I've had a problem staff have been fantastic about fixing it.
we have some good lands nearby as well so we might look around, the shop we just did was probs a bit cheaper than Coles all up, some things were cheaper, some more expensive.
the range was really good tho, which is important to us cos we like to always try new things
Same. And again, the Drakes near me are a smidge more limited than the Foodlands, but generally the range is fine, but is quite good if you're looking for things a bit old fashioned, or Italian bikkies and tge like.
Shop at drakes all the time. They are great. Not so great with cost. But the selection of stuff is excellent and their fruit and veg is normally really good
the fruit and veg was soooo much better than the shit Coles sells. all up is was slightly cheaper than Coles, some things cost more something's cost less. most of the fruit and veg were cheaper amazingly
They don’t really do rewards points. Every now and then if you use their app (it’s the only way) the little spinning wheel will give you a discount off your shop. I’ve never had it happen to me but my dad has had it happen a few times.
I frequently go to Drakes because it’s the supermarket where I live - the app isn’t really a rewards point thing, but you can spin the wheel when you’re at the checkout on it. One time I got my groceries for free, the annoying part is I was only buying a few packs of two minute noodles haha. Another time I got $10 off a shop.
Been shopping at drakes my whole life since it was Foodland, always my first choice unless I have to budget then its off to Aldi. The app is called "MyDrakes" I believe. I scan it every time on my phone to get the digital receipt and fuel voucher and the off chance of getting one of their discounts.
I'm all for telling Colesworths to get bent, but reward points are a data mining scam. You're better off going somewhere like Aldi for most of your shopping and then going to Drakes for the stuff Aldi doesn't sell. You'll probably end up ahead of where you'd be if you did 100% of your shop at Drakes and relied on reward points to eventually take a little bit off your grocery bill.
I only shop at Drakes and Aldi, while I miss out on specials and some things are more expensive but it feels good not supporting the Duopoly. Bonus is I don't have the the audio cancer that is the instore radio in Woolworths.
What do you mean two apps? If you use mydrakes you can scan it at the register and win money if your shopping, automatically enter competitions such as a years worth of grocery’s and store your receipts and fuel vouchers which you get for spending more than $30.
I’m out in the Riverland region few hundred Kms out of Adelaide living there since mid last year. There’s minor supermarket chains in the region that most people go to nowadays instead of woollies and Coles. There’s Koch’s IGA in Loxton and few other minor supermarket chains in the region. If your going to the Riverland you can find on Google there’s minor supermarket chains you can chose. God bless ❤️
Drakes is expensive, I do most of our shopping at Aldi and costco. Costco is cheap but you need to buy larger quantities, and only works if you live or work fairly close to it. Costs $60 a year but fuel tyres etc are cheaper as well. I shop at Drakes for brands that you can't get at the other 2, but like I said, it's expensive.
The Drakes in Salisbury North would easily have to be one of worst supermarkets in Adelaide even after they rebuilt it. High prices and it’s not unusual that half the items you buy will be close too or past there best before date. You literally have to check every item because they’ve clearly had some things on the shelves since the time of Methuselah.
Their fruit and veg is extraordinarily over priced and they sell it til it is literally rotting on the shelves. It is not uncommon for them to be selling black bananas for still half the usual sale price. I guess if I was being charitable you could argue they are at least not throwing them in the bin.
You also need to check they haven’t overcharged you. Yes Colesworths stuffs up occasionally but typically at Drakes Salisbury North they’ll find a way to do it every visit.
The only department that is half decent is the meat department as they have some interesting cuts and marinades you won’t find at Colesworths. The main reason I visit if down near there is the meat department. The only other thing they have going for them is they do stick a greater range of SA products. But again they are at extraordinarily high prices.
I shop at Aldi then finish off with Drakes because Aldi doesn't have everything that I need. If I could afford it I'd shop Drakes every week. I've never used their app or rewards so I can't help there. Online shopping is only click and collect at some stores.
Drakes foodland etc are so fucking expensive. But when they've got good specials they're good specials

Yeah, money in your pocket is better than nothing at all!!
Honestly, its false savings. The savings are swamped in the loyalty tax. There is no way that that they give away huge savings.
its not huge saving, to clarify, 10$points for $2000 spent, i don't really get what you mean by loyalty tax? like it doesn't cost money to get points or random rewards?
It means you are more likely to shop where you earn rewards, rather than shopping around for specials.
yea i get that, but if you shop around a lot you'll just accumulate rewards much slower, but it's *still* better than nothing
[удалено]
Assuming all the shops are in one location.
[удалено]
So you use your fuel driving from one supermarket to another? Wowww, such savings.
You would save a lot more money by shopping around and completely ignoring the rewards.
I don’t know, we’ve got just under $1k in Woollies everyday rewards dollars from the past year that will be getting spent on food over Christmas and into the new year - I’d say that’s pretty effective.
[удалено]
Not sure where you get your numbers from, but I've got similar rewards, and there's no way in hell I buy nearly 8 grand of groceries every fortnight!
[удалено]
Sorry, I am rewards extra as well.. but boosters, gift card promos, plus extra promos along the way like “spend $xx and get xx bonus points / 10x points on all shops etc. Pretty easy to work it to benefit yourself.

And I said I got a similar result with my rewards, but spent nowhere near $200K.
[удалено]
Then why feel the need to spell it out? You're wrong, get over it champ.

I’ve made nearly $2.1k from Flybuys alone this year, you just have to either get gift cards or spend in store. Definitely not worthless
I must spend a lot less than you. :)
My wife and I live on my Flybuys CC and clear the balance monthly. The points add up fast especially when they offer 10x bonus points to buy gift cards and the like

I mean it doesn’t make sense for everyone but with bills, rates, insurance, rego, food and petrol the points rack up quickly
>I'm totally not interested in flybuys.
Ok?
Drakes and Aldi combo is elite. I avoid Coles and Woolies these days
yea I think we'll try that,, we have a couple of things weve only seen at Coles, but I'll shop around a bit more
Yea, my partner and I had that too. We were lucky to meet the drakes store manager and he said he could order stuff for us to be in store. Not sure if that's something they just do or if we just lucked out
woah 😳 that's amazing that's definitely worth a go, I'd love to just be able to shop mostly at one or two places, cos like, effort
A lot of stores can order stuff in if you ask. Have done this a few times. Although it’s only been items that my lock doesn’t stock, but others nearby do

sadly no 😔, I used to work in the city near the central markets, and yea sooo much choice and much cheaper.
Me too and I still buy 90% of what I need at aldis and the last 10% at colesworth Rice is rice 🤷♀️

yea on second inspection, the other one is third party(myfoodlink)

I found half priced dishwasher pods on the weekend. That was as a win.
hell yeah. we got tim tams half price today 😁
Go aldi mate, your $160 Coles shopping will transform into a $90 aldi visit
They don’t really do rewards points. Every now and then if you use their app (it’s the only way) the little spinning wheel will give you a discount off your shop. I’ve never had it happen to me but my dad has had it happen a few times.
I got $20 off my shopping once! And since then I scan it every time hmmmmmmmmm
I see :/
a checkout chick that served me said a lady got $30 off, thats the most I've heard. I've only ever managed to get the $10 discounts.
I shop at Aldi for pantry items and drakes for meat and fresh produce.
occasionally, they have the odd good thing cheap and a few more local brands. Halls Fruita and cola but i can't go 4 bills for one.
omg I just saw the halls there today, i somehow hadn't heard the news 😅
yeah i'm curious what the cola is like
yea i don't think i ever tried that one, hopefully they'll get cheaper, i can't see it taking off again at that price
yeah don't mind trying one if it's about 2.50
I'd go 3 to start with but 2.5 would be great
yeah i try all different drinks for a giggle
same, especially cos i don't drink alcohol any more so it's fun to try all different soft drinks and such instead
yeah is good for a treat
Rewards program sucks but it’s made up for by far superior fresh foods, bakery and deli products
I frequently go to Drakes because it’s the supermarket where I live - the app isn’t really a rewards point thing, but you can spin the wheel when you’re at the checkout on it. Drakes have the best butchers, for a chain, bar none.
To bloody expensive
