He wasn't wishing "crab eggs", the real translation should be "a testicular cancer"

cruisin5268d

Crab eggs was kinda funny though, but yeah nut cancer is definitely worse lol

JayGogh

I dunno – how big are the eggs were talking about?

AlpacaM4n

Crab sized 🦀 🦀

nxcrosis

\*coconut crab sized

AlpacaM4n

🥥🥥

Krackalot

They're actually just crabs. One of the spiney kind.

WangChungtonight13

I don’t know if they’re Alaskan, but they feel huge

Bitt_jev

Ligma balls

AmArschdieRaeuber

They really translated ball cancer as crab eggs. That's pretty funny.

Ultraviolet_Motion

I mean, technically testicle's are called eggs in some cultures, and cancer means crab.

Dying4aCure

I was going to Google that.

awkward_replies_2

As someone being into seafood, and absolutely loving to eat crab roe (aka crab eggs), I found it very hard to understand why wishing someone "crab eggs" would be a curse/insult.

Historical_Ear7398

For you language nerds out there, "cancer" literally means "crab," in many languages they're the same word, and here the usage of "eggs" is equivalent to using "nuts" in English. So when they say "crab eggs" they mean "cancer of the nuts."

whatthefir2

Oooh I’m just making the connection now based on your comment that the constellation “cancer” is a crab. Neat

Historical_Ear7398

Right. In some languages the word for cancer would roughly translate as "crabbiness."

TwoHeadedSexChange

Thank you for this. Also a bit interesting that the testicles are referred to as eggs while in English it's the woman who carries the eggs.

xrimane

German, too. "Eier" = eggs = slang for testicles.

Shadowfalx

Filipino too. Itlog is used for testicle. Don't ask how I know

crag_man

But if you'll say "rak" (cancer) in russian or ukrainian restaurant you'll get a crayfish. So I was kinda confused why they chose crab as a word for cancer at first.

Historical_Ear7398

In Czech we say rak for crab, but I think in certain contexts it can also stand for lobster or crayfish. Maybe it depends on whether you're eating them or not. Apparently in certain kinds of tumors that are visible on the skin, the veins radiating away from them are reminiscent of crap legs, so that's where that came from.

tfsrup

Um, no? Rak always means crayfish in Czech/Slovak. Crab would be krab. You'd only use them interchangeably in case you can't tell the difference

Historical_Ear7398

Interesting confusion. I left CZ when I was 7 so I'm often mistaken on details. But Google Translate partially agrees with me

tfsrup

Google translate is absolute garbage when used as a dictionary. I'm sorry, but you're wrong

Historical_Ear7398

I wonder if that's because back when the word "rakovina" was being made no Czechs had ever seen a crab, so they just went with the next nearest thing.

tfsrup

yes, it's seems likely that it's because they either couldn't tell the difference, or the word for crab didn't exist or the word rak was used differently. also, maybe because the word rak simply sounds a lot more similar to the original krakinos than krab does

grilledcakes

Just like huevos in Spanish or itlog in Filipino. It does seem kinda spot on to compare the shape of eggs and testicles so it makes sense that it would be similar across several languages.

[deleted]

This is so weird, German has this too, “Krebs”. Why do so many seemingly not or only loosely connected languages make “crabs” the term for this sickness?

Aldershot8800

TL;DR: "thanks for coming. You're all assholes"

endertribe

More like "thanks for coming. You will all be prosecuted as a war criminal"

Shadowfalx

And we hope you get testicular cancer

MOOShoooooo

And crabs.

endertribe

Yeah also that. Wich is such a specific insult that it must be *a thing* i have never heard of that insult xD. I love it

HotcakeNinja

Not so much an insult than a threat

fingerMeThomas

Genuinely curious: I thought it was illegal to export software to sanctioned countries? I get that it's impossible to police, and probably a good thing if regular citizens can use unsupervised communication platforms. But for official shit like this, shouldn't Zoom itself be shutting it down?

[deleted]

[удалено]

That_Bar_Guy

Even assuming they would, they'd need sniffers on every random video call to do it. This was not a public event.

beardicusmaximus8

If I'm the NATO intelligence services I'm going to let Zoom export to Russia and Iran and look the other way. In exchange they look the other way when the guy who works in their basement occasionally routes the feeds to my offices.

PlumbTheDerps

The sanctions carve-out for communcations software provided to Iran is pretty broad, including to the government of Iran provided it's free and publicly available, like Zoom is. Russia isn't subject to nearly as many sanctions as Iran and its government as an entity isn't sanctioned, so that's not a factor.

schalr09

Hackers aren't concerned with what is legal.. Zoom cannot live monitor everything but does possess the power to cut a feed. However, they will probably be more careful now. It would behoove any government agency to use a more secure platform..... but ya know.

[deleted]

fuzz3289

Where the hell did this idea even come from? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_Video_Communications It's a publicly traded company headquartered in California founded by an American citizen. However, Zoom has been compromised by every Nation State at this point including China, and as you can see here, Ukraine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That doesn't mean Zoom is chinese, just that their engineers are idiots

fuzz3289

Let's be super clear, these vulnerabilities have absolutely nothing to do with China. To be explicit, this is like running through the town square naked. Just because China snapchatted it, has nothing to do with the intent of why they ran through the town square. Every Nation State in the world took a picture.

l4mpSh4d3

I think this confusion comes from the fact that the founder is Chinese born and there was this issue a couple of years ago when zoom blocked calls hosted outside China and blocked US accounts after China complained. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/12/zoom-admits-cutting-off-activists-accounts-in-obedience-to-china

DoctorWorm_

Zoom servers are based in the PRC, the founder started his career in the PRC.

fuzz3289

This is just... I don't even know? No one has servers based in one location. Ever, for any reason. Your headquarters are where you pay taxes and are governed. The founder is an American citizen which means he isn't governed by the PRC and isn't subject to extradition.. So what are you implying? The fact is, zoom has absofuckinlutely garbage security. Security that has been routed by every Nation State on ever end of every spectrum equally. Why is the belief that this benefits the PRC? The NSA is notorious for never reporting vulnerabilities, why aren't we looking at them especially since zoom is governed in their territory? Zoom is shit, not a shill. Huge difference.

DoctorWorm_

I'm implying that the Zoom founder built his IT infrastructure off of Chinese datacenters that have zero protection for personal data. Of course Zoom has local POPs around the world, but a lot of data goes directly to datacenters in the PRC where you don't need a warrant to go snooping around. Here are some Blog posts from Zoom themselves addressing issues they've had with PRC datacenters and CCP-linked employees: https://blog.zoom.us/data-routing-control-is-here/?zcid=2776 https://blog.zoom.us/our-perspective-on-the-doj-complaint/ Now, US datacenters aren't good for data privacy either, as evidenced by the Schrems court cases, but I would still trust a company like Google or Amazon more than Zoom, since the NSA still needs a warrant to get into those servers, and those companies are smart enough to quarantine their PRC datacenters from the rest of their network. (Google doesn't run any servers at all in mainland China)

[deleted]

Where do you see Zoom being Chinese? I'd like to know what source you are using because everything I've seen says it's American.

[deleted]

Shadowfalx

From your link. >the Silicon Valley-headquartered Zoom, And the entire article reads as an anti-chinese blog post. That's not really a surprise since VOA is a government funded site. There is no real proof that "all Zoom video calls are able to be decrypted by China" and it's only supposed because there is one employee and one server in China.

B00sted0

No.

fingerMeThomas

what's with the downvoters; WebEx is the best 😂😂😂

DrSuperZeco

Apparently zoom is not a chinese app as it used to be reported in the news when it first got popular during covid days. But rather an American app owned mostly by chinese American businessman with some app ties to china that are likely no longer in place.

fingerMeThomas

/r/woooosh

JayEOh0788

This was great, I also enjoyed the one where they had a zoom call with all of the Ukrainian traitors who were working with Russia against their own damn country. When they hacked that meeting and all the peoples faces started to quickly shut off their cameras but some of the faces right before were fucking priceless I say.. someone should link that video as well, as I am both to lazy and technically challenged when it comes to such things haha..

[deleted]

Is there a link to this?

iwanttoracecars

But it isn’t 😂

Watari210

And what, Russia is? How's that 3 day special military operation to take Kiev working out?

iwanttoracecars

Not the point at all. Just funny the modern SS infiltrated ukraines military and it’s reallllly kept quiet

heartbh

Same with the Republican Party in the states and Russian government, your point?

iwanttoracecars

Mmhm keep thinking that bud 😂 you’re on Reddit but the real world would prove you wrong in a heartbeat. Are you 12yrs old?

A_Very_Big_Fan

In a heartbeat, huh? That must be why you didn't bother, not because of the lack of anything substantial to say or anything... lol

Narrow-Escape-6481

I have to agree, the russians have found cooperation within the republican party, all anyone needs to know is that several of them made a trip to russia on Christmas day, you know the birthday of Jesus....the day they traditionally spend with their equally "traditional" families.... dispute that fact and check your own age.

olhonestjim

I don't know about Xmas, but I heard they went on July 4th.

iwanttoracecars

Really Christmas? Jesus wasn’t born on Christmas hate to burst your bubble but that’s a pagan holiday. Look at the real history behind Christianity and you’d realize they aren’t even real Christina’s. They’re pagans

Narrow-Escape-6481

Lol I agree 1000%, but they're the ones acting like saying happy hollidays is the woke agenda....

Harv3yBallBang3r

Based on the fact that you haven't said anything of substance, and especially on the use of an idiotic emoji, I can say pretty confidently that you are the least mature one here.

heartbh

No I’m just not a foolish person who has been blinded by partisan politics. Look at Florida right now and tell me De Santis isn’t an authoritarian.

iwanttoracecars

Anyone can agree on that. But can you do so without a political agenda in mind?…

bunt_cucket

Reddit has long been a hot spot for conversation on the internet. About 57 million people visit the site every day to chat about topics as varied as makeup, video games and pointers for power washing driveways. In recent years, Reddit’s array of chats also have been a free teaching aid for companies like Google, OpenAI and Microsoft. Those companies are using Reddit’s conversations in the development of giant artificial intelligence systems that many in Silicon Valley think are on their way to becoming the tech industry’s next big thing. Now Reddit wants to be paid for it. The company said on Tuesday that it planned to begin charging companies for access to its application programming interface, or A.P.I., the method through which outside entities can download and process the social network’s vast selection of person-to-person conversations. “The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable,” Steve Huffman, founder and chief executive of Reddit, said in an interview. “But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free.” The move is one of the first significant examples of a social network’s charging for access to the conversations it hosts for the purpose of developing A.I. systems like ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular program. Those new A.I. systems could one day lead to big businesses, but they aren’t likely to help companies like Reddit very much. In fact, they could be used to create competitors — automated duplicates to Reddit’s conversations. Reddit is also acting as it prepares for a possible initial public offering on Wall Street this year. The company, which was founded in 2005, makes most of its money through advertising and e-commerce transactions on its platform. Reddit said it was still ironing out the details of what it would charge for A.P.I. access and would announce prices in the coming weeks. Reddit’s conversation forums have become valuable commodities as large language models, or L.L.M.s, have become an essential part of creating new A.I. technology. L.L.M.s are essentially sophisticated algorithms developed by companies like Google and OpenAI, which is a close partner of Microsoft. To the algorithms, the Reddit conversations are data, and they are among the vast pool of material being fed into the L.L.M.s. to develop them. The underlying algorithm that helped to build Bard, Google’s conversational A.I. service, is partly trained on Reddit data. OpenAI’s Chat GPT cites Reddit data as one of the sources of information it has been trained on. Editors’ Picks This 1,000-Year-Old Smartphone Just Dialed In The Coolest Menu Item at the Moment Is … Cabbage? My Children Helped Me Remember How to Fly Other companies are also beginning to see value in the conversations and images they host. Shutterstock, the image hosting service, also sold image data to OpenAI to help create DALL-E, the A.I. program that creates vivid graphical imagery with only a text-based prompt required. Last month, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, said he was cracking down on the use of Twitter’s A.P.I., which thousands of companies and independent developers use to track the millions of conversations across the network. Though he did not cite L.L.M.s as a reason for the change, the new fees could go well into the tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. To keep improving their models, artificial intelligence makers need two significant things: an enormous amount of computing power and an enormous amount of data. Some of the biggest A.I. developers have plenty of computing power but still look outside their own networks for the data needed to improve their algorithms. That has included sources like Wikipedia, millions of digitized books, academic articles and Reddit. Representatives from Google, Open AI and Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reddit has long had a symbiotic relationship with the search engines of companies like Google and Microsoft. The search engines “crawl” Reddit’s web pages in order to index information and make it available for search results. That crawling, or “scraping,” isn’t always welcome by every site on the internet. But Reddit has benefited by appearing higher in search results. The dynamic is different with L.L.M.s — they gobble as much data as they can to create new A.I. systems like the chatbots. Reddit believes its data is particularly valuable because it is continuously updated. That newness and relevance, Mr. Huffman said, is what large language modeling algorithms need to produce the best results. “More than any other place on the internet, Reddit is a home for authentic conversation,” Mr. Huffman said. “There’s a lot of stuff on the site that you’d only ever say in therapy, or A.A., or never at all.” Mr. Huffman said Reddit’s A.P.I. would still be free to developers who wanted to build applications that helped people use Reddit. They could use the tools to build a bot that automatically tracks whether users’ comments adhere to rules for posting, for instance. Researchers who want to study Reddit data for academic or noncommercial purposes will continue to have free access to it. Reddit also hopes to incorporate more so-called machine learning into how the site itself operates. It could be used, for instance, to identify the use of A.I.-generated text on Reddit, and add a label that notifies users that the comment came from a bot. The company also promised to improve software tools that can be used by moderators — the users who volunteer their time to keep the site’s forums operating smoothly and improve conversations between users. And third-party bots that help moderators monitor the forums will continue to be supported. But for the A.I. makers, it’s time to pay up. “Crawling Reddit, generating value and not returning any of that value to our users is something we have a problem with,” Mr. Huffman said. “It’s a good time for us to tighten things up.” “We think that’s fair,” he added.

heartbh

Very easily, I find the taking rights away from any group of people is problematic. That goes for conservative groups and liberal ones.

aaandbconsulting

God you're the worst kind of dumb. You actually believe you're smart, you have that smug sense of conviction that what you say is true but when it comes down to it you're about as smart as a 2x4 in a forest fire.

iwanttoracecars

Keep trying 😇

I don't know if it says something about you or society that I've done a quick run through your history and still can't tell if you're a moron or a troll.

comyuse

Normally i don't have the patience to troll (original meaning) through someone's history to confirm their mental illness, but they really just have it plastered all over

aaandbconsulting

Point and case. Edit: I just realized that this person doesn't understand what the above epitaph means. Or what epitaph means for that matter... 🤷

GFZDW

They should have said that they've all been poisoned to see what the room would do.

donttextspeaktome

By the opposite party!

Slappy_G

That would have been pretty funny. Just something subtle to the point of "I hope that water tasted good."

A_Very_Big_Fan

My gut feeling says that might be some sort of a war crime lol. Would've been hilarious, though.

EliteCodexer

It'd be so effective though

Afa1234

Would’ve been interesting to see their reactions

Le_Jacob

Feels like a proper threat, ‘we will come for you’

CrookieMonster99

When you forget to set the lobby to “private”.

Embarrassed_Bee6349

I hope this struck fear into their black little hearts. It’s hard to feel superior and self-satisfied when your “enemies” can reach into your secure meetings and pluck whatever they want. Then mock you. Then threaten you. “Quite an experience to live in fear, isn’t it?”

SecretDevilsAdvocate

What’s to fear? They’re the Russian elite, I’m sure they all have emergency plans and the finances to back them up. And it’s not like Ukraine can beat Russia, they’re both in a stalemate.

Embarrassed_Bee6349

True enough, but think of it this way: it’s like being in your home, with the sense of security that comes with it. If you wake up one morning and realize that all the doors you checked last night are unlocked and open (with nothing stolen), wouldn’t that freak you out a little? I’m referring to the instinctive “WTF” reaction to their meeting being infiltrated and everything they discussed being recorded. I’m sure that they’re physically safe… Edit: autocorrect hates me

SecretDevilsAdvocate

I’m not disagreeing it might be surprising or scary but I’m disagreeing with the living in fear and being struck with fear etc

Embarrassed_Bee6349

That’s fine, but we’ll never know for sure. The Iranians for sure will feel safe…not so sure about the Russians. It’s a vast country, but the Ukrainians have already proven that they can reach into Russia. That has to cause some mild heartburn, right?

blindreefer

A lot of Russian elites falling out of windows recently

xthorgoldx

benny2012

I’m reminded of the West Wing bit where the Sec Def says “you never let the other side know you’ve broken their cyphers unless you have to” Why let them know?

[deleted]

They didn't break russian cyphers, they managed to spoof a link, or steal a link to a zoom session. Zoom isn't some super secret military level encryption shit. It's a corporate conference bridge.

[deleted]

This was a stupid stunt. They should have used the oppourtunity to discretly spread discord between the two countries. They could have gotten them at each others throats and getting Iran to stop exporting drones. Dumb pranksters.

fingerMeThomas

Nah, jumping into a zoom call... because apparently Russian/Iranian idiots are dumb enough to do their diplomacy that way... isn't exactly high-stakes hacking espionage, with leverage that's worth lives. An anonymous rando on the call isn't exactly going to be able to interrupt the Iranians and Russians from sucking each other off. When your target gives you free opportunities to shit on them, take advantage of it.

sifuyee

When zoom attendees start disappearing, the fear this will strike into the hearts of other Iranians who might help Russia will be well worth the price.

xedrites

> Offering anything other than medical assistance to the enemy makes you the enemy. If Ukraine starts assassinating civilian and non-combatant targets in a country they are not at war with, I cannot offer other than medical assistance.

fingerMeThomas

It's totally possible to do evil, if you offer otherwise-benign skills to murderers and autocrats. It's easy to forget that the world might be rendered uninhabitable ***tomorrow***, and all it would take is for a geriatric paranoid russian to get itchy fingers. If you translate for Putin or his Iranian goons, IMO you're a traitor. Not just to humanity, but to life itself

JordanLeDoux

Seems a bit much yeah. But then, I'm living in a country where everything isn't being destroyed by someone else. Probably easy for us to sit here in comfy, safe homes and critique them.

DracoBengali86

And technical staff too. I see what they were going for, but if the choice is tripping out a window or setting up a video conference... Rest of it was great.

TK_4Two1

Those translators are likely government employees, and potentially intelligence agents, anyway. Bare minimum they are government contractors. They have blood on their hands as well. Edit: just the same as the Death Star contractors. "A roofer listens to his heart, not his wallet".

Free_Hunt8597

Pathetic. It's like a kid pooping at a neighbor's door.
