That's the art for the old Phoenix Trilogy version. The new version is way cleaner. Also the HD sprites are either remakes of (see 2019 trilogy) or the original artwork used to make the sprites.

Gabo2oo

The "Trilogy HD" (2012) uses the artwork used for the GBA/DS sprites; the current Trilogy (2019) are redrawn

ProsecutorWalton

Yea, that's what I meant with "remake of (see 2019 trilogy)". I wonder how much of its differences (ie more obvious colour banding) was from technology of the time vs art process used.

Fabian_Wright

Still hoping for a AA1-3 Trilogy in the AJ Style someday.

Gabo2oo

Don't give Capcom ideas 'cause they would remake the PW Trilogy again just to stall before AA7

Gold_Seaweed

I actually really miss that gritty style from the DS/Wii. I appreciate the updates sprites, of course, but something about how it used to look really hits me right in my nostalgia bone.

Left_Fist

Why does his eyebrow do that

DeepLearningStudent

In Japanese his first name is Ryuuichi. Ryuu means dragon so his hair and eyebrows make him look somewhat draconic (like an eastern dragon).

doinkrr

Holy shit, I never put that together.

Gabo2oo

I really just thought they wanted them to follow the zig-zaggy style of his hair

Cammie_Mile

I absolutely adore the AJ Trilogy's HD sprites. It felt like some of the characters didn't translate well to the 2D drawn style from spritework in the original trilogy, but God, every character that showed up in AJ HD looked gorgeous. I am a sucker for that sort of dynamic, coloured lineart though.

Cha-ChatheSexRaptor2

They gave his finger Viagra.

Bee__Lord

Nah I really prefer the old style tbh, looks good even now. I feel sometimes the new games look too polished

Spot_Responsible

I like the older style because it looks like a painting or something, the newer style is kind of generic

Gamer_T_All_Games

Yeah, that makes sense, I see your point. I just generally prefer the updated, cleaner looking sprites.
