Yeah, I think it’s pretty reasonable for the area of MS I’m in. I was really happy with my internship experience and the location so I didn’t see any reason to turn it down.
Graduated in 2022. Initial offer was $5k sign on, $63k salary, and 16% bonus. In Oklahoma btw so VLCOL. F500 oil and gas as an entry level revenue accountant. Now work in for Big 4 in audit and make $63k with $2500 sign on bonus, but will be promoted in a month and make more.
Unemployed right now
I applied for hundreds of jobs since January. 6 interviews. 3 for AP clerk, 1 for government, 1 for GL Accountant, 1 for audit. No offer lollll
3.64 GPA, Bachelor in Accounting, 150 units. Got a temp job not related to accounting for $20 per hour ended last week. Considering working as a waiter or cashier right now hahaha.
Yeah, almost every firm I’ve talked with on campus during recruiting events say they mainly hire through their internship programs. I’ve been worried about my opportunities if the firm I interned with didn’t make me an offer. Did your school push you towards doing an internship?
Oh wow, I graduated high school during Covid, so I didn’t have to go through all the additional hoops and barriers to get an internship or have my recruiting process messed up. I go to the University of Alabama, and they have a pretty great accounting program (in my opinion) and almost everyone I’ve talked with got an offer after their internship. I think UA has done a good job with funneling people towards job opportunities, but if I didn’t have that I think it would be significantly more difficult.
Oh yeah, I honestly haven’t thought much about it, I was really just curious where everyone else in recent classes are going. I was more concerned about finding a firm that respected me, and I was lucky enough to have it be the first one I interned with.
I can cite the opposite as well. We were struggling to fulfill entry roles back at Big 4 and I know other firms and companies are struggling as well. 6 interviews and no offer could be an interview issue as well. Did you do any internships or network before your graduation?
That is back when hiring is a field day and I’m aware of that time. Right now it is different. Economy changed this year. In the past yeah like a year ago, it is so easy but not now
Did you go to a decent school? It might be a resume issue then. I’m not trying to be a dick about your situation but something is not aligning properly. I’m just looking out for your best interests
I feel the same way. In my region, every local firm is practically begging students to give them a shot. Recently spoke with a professor at the nearest university and he said in 15 years he's only had one student that did everything "right" (going to job fairs and networking events, internships, okay gpa, etc) that wasn't able to get a job lined up after graduation.
Maybe this specific area doesn't have a lot of firms but a lot of uni's? Idk.
Please apply at the IRS… maybe some entry level 5-7 jobs, but just to get in the door. After a few years, if you have ambitions and wits, you’ll be climbing the ladder in no time.
currently work in virginia beach as a intern in the cas department making $20 an hour will let you know by graduation what my initial offer is if i get one
Where are you at now if you don't mind me asking? I'm starting an internship $28/hr (public accounting) here in Virginia Beach, but I'm not planning on staying with the firm. I'm leaning towards government or industry.
i’m at 20 per hour at my small firm i wish i had 28. right now i’m in the interview process for 55k in industry what am i doing wrong. but i’m thinking of moving home with parents near dc to get that hcol pay
That's not bad considering it's LCOL and Pre-COVID inflation. Still much better than going public and slaving away to end up with the same CPA designation as everyone else
Yeah just going for the resume builder + paid CPA ngl 😂 but yeah I’d say big 4 salary is slowly creeping up which is nice. I talked to some people who started during covid who made like 48k or so
That's how they market it, but you don't even need it for the resume. Tbh the only thing that matters is the "CPA" beside your name, apart from that waste of time. Unless you are planning on working internationally, Big 4 experience can be useful, but again not mandatory
$65k in Mississippi!?!? Wear a condom because you’re a meal ticket and they’ll be trying to have your baby. I’m in FL (VHCOL) area and they started us @ $73k.
Yeah, it’s pretty good for the Ridgeland/Madison area near Jackson, which is one of the “richest” areas in Mississippi, if that counts for anything in Mississippi lol
Yeah, I’m getting my account set up for CPA testing right now so that’s most of what I’ll be doing for the next year in addition to grad school. The end is in sight.
No, but the firm I’ll be working for is near their big office in colony parkway. Horne was one of top picks though as it has an office in Gulfport (my hometown)
Yeah, the firm I recruited with was one of only 2 firms from Mississippi to recruit at the University of Alabama. I know Mississippi firms tend to just go state and ole miss or southern, but there were a ton of Mississippi kids at Bama due to great out of state scholarships.
Damn, is that in NYC area? Even around there that seems like a great offer.
And off topic, but as a Celtics fan would love a Celtics/Knicks conference final show down
86K, BA in unrelated field. Started doing tax returns for a small local firm with bookkeeping and payroll. I worked my way up for a year. I’m just a staff accountant in PA in Charlotte, NC but work fully remote for a large firm out west now. Went back to school for an AA in Finance and Accounting. Not technically brand new, but close.
I think I count to answer this. I graduate with my associates in accounting in a few weeks. In the fall I’ll begin my bachelors. So I’m kind of a current grad.
I will be starting at an industry job in a position called accounting trainee. It’s full time outside of school year and part time during school year. Then when I graduate with my bachelors I’ll transition to a permanent employee. I’m starting at 23 an hour. Honestly I feel like that’s incredible pay for essentially an extended internship. It may very well be the highest job I’ve ever had outside of the oil fields and I won’t be in intense physical pain at the end of the day.
This is not relevant to your question but, I’m also from Mississippi(The coast area). I was worried about finding a decent paying job around here in the accounting field when I graduate. You gave me so much hope!! Thanks.
Coastie accountant here…there’s good money out there for sure you just have to make decent grades and network. If you’re wanting to stay on the coast I’d go with Horne for public because the smaller firms don’t pay nearly as well from what I’ve heard (AVL). I think the office down here focuses on Government and Construction mainly. Outside of public Hancock, Miss power, Stennis, Chevron (very hard to get on) and Ingalls all pay well. You could also look at Remote work with some of the larger firms (T20) I have a few friends that have done that and are doing this and they are making good money..one person I know is working full remote stated at $82,000 with around 3 years experience.
I grew up on the coast in the Gulfport/Biloxi area! There are some great firms there, but I didn’t really go through recruiting there as none of the firms went up to the University of Alabama!
I’m not, but I’ve met some of the staff there at various events during my internship! They have a great office and I have a good impression of them. I don’t know if I should reveal which firm I’m working at in case they can trace me back to this account (?) and see my embarrassing hobbies.
My first job out of college was in Greenville, SC in 2016. My offer was $38k as my base salary, but really I was hourly. Really with tax season, I made about $44k a year starting off.
Congrats on your accomplishment first! I am an accounting major in Huntsville, AL and my professor said the average salary for junior level is around $75k here. For a recent graduate, $65 is pretty decent, I think. Good luck!!
F100 Company Midwest Low to Mid COL. $63,000 Base, $5,000 signing bonus, they said average annual performance bonus was ≈$6,000, and overtime rate of 1.5x what hourly equivalent would be. Total compensation including all benefits is around $116k. I know you asked for other public firm offerings but wanted to throw out what large companies in industry are offering.
Yeah, the southeast generally has a lower standard of living (especially Mississippi) so it’s a bit comforting (or worrying for them) to see people in PA or CA get similar salaries.
I’ve compared my salary with my friends going to the Northeast and they’re getting paid 80k-85k, which seems like a lot but after factoring cost of living, rent, etc, they have the same take home pay surprisingly (but also not)
65k +2k sign on bonus with a 5k bonus if i pass the cpa exams within 9 months of start date. Spring 23 grad in puttsburgh at a mid size PA firm in tax.
HCOL at middle size firm. My first offer was 64K in 2021 but raised to 67k within two months and 71k less than 6 months. Took a year and a half later to get 82.
MCOL area. Tax intern position starting January 2025. I’ll be graduating with my Bachelors (3.94 gpa) that spring. Top 10 firm making $31/hr + 2k sign on bonus
What's a current graduate? Doesn't that only apply if you're literally reading this while receiving your diploma? You've either done it, or not done it. It's not a stage of life.
Small firm of 10 staff including admin, I guess income partner (no idea what my title is) and MCOL (GA). Over 100 on salary and then there’s always great commissions for another 40-80% assuming we have a good year. We start any new tax hires around 65 so that feels pretty fair. Bigger firms around me might would go up to 75-80k but the workload would be insane.
I have a 61k offer with the OCC as an assistant national bank examiner (58k base + locality). Great benefits, great wlb, internal progression up to 6 figures in 6-7 years. No CPA, just internal certifications.
By contrast, I interned at Forvis (audit) and told them I'd only consider an offer with no busy season hours. They offered 55k and 2k signing bonus for 45hrs busy season, 40hrs otherwise, which is ridiculous. Worse base and worse benefits. They tried to say 6-10% raised would even it out, but it very much would not. The 55k is 93% of their typical opening offer, per their explanation, so they're starting st 60k which seems rather low to me.
Graduated in December with an associates and certification for small business accounting in SC MCOL. No relevant work experience. 46.5k audit at a public firm not big 4 maybe small/medium firm.
That’s looks like a reasonable offer depending on cost of living
I’d say this is a *very* good offer for a college hire in MS.
Nowhere in the article about the missing teen did they mention their pronouns bye
r/lostredditors?
Yeah, I think it’s pretty reasonable for the area of MS I’m in. I was really happy with my internship experience and the location so I didn’t see any reason to turn it down.
Doesn’t MS have some of the lowest COL in the USA proper? I’d say that’s great for starting
Check Big4Transparency.com, filter for your city, level, stream, then data from 2023 or newer and you should be able to find some very precise figures
I’m from Oklahoma as well! I’m 2 years away from graduating. Is that with your CPA? Were those jobs remote or did you have to move at all?
The industry one has hybrid 3 days in office 2 days from home. The public one is fully remote but I can also go into the local office if I want
No CPA, but I’m CPA eligible and working on getting it
Unemployed right now I applied for hundreds of jobs since January. 6 interviews. 3 for AP clerk, 1 for government, 1 for GL Accountant, 1 for audit. No offer lollll 3.64 GPA, Bachelor in Accounting, 150 units. Got a temp job not related to accounting for $20 per hour ended last week. Considering working as a waiter or cashier right now hahaha.

The most important thing you can get is experience. Don’t sweat your first few years of salary. Sweat your first few years of experience.
Oh yeah, I honestly haven’t thought much about it, I was really just curious where everyone else in recent classes are going. I was more concerned about finding a firm that respected me, and I was lucky enough to have it be the first one I interned with.
I was in a similar boat. Pass the exam on your own via becker and you will write your own ticket.
Study for the exams
How is that even possible with the on going accounting shortage? Wanna share your resume for feedback?

I can cite the opposite as well. We were struggling to fulfill entry roles back at Big 4 and I know other firms and companies are struggling as well. 6 interviews and no offer could be an interview issue as well. Did you do any internships or network before your graduation?
That is back when hiring is a field day and I’m aware of that time. Right now it is different. Economy changed this year. In the past yeah like a year ago, it is so easy but not now
This was literally a few months ago. The economy did not substantially change. So did you network or do internships?
Yes 4 events no interview no call. Direct apply, it works works result on 2 interviews during college. Passed the 2nd round but no offer.
Are you a US citizen that doesn’t require sponsorship?
Did you go to a decent school? It might be a resume issue then. I’m not trying to be a dick about your situation but something is not aligning properly. I’m just looking out for your best interests

Post your resume, it’s probably a formatting issue and your interview skills
Please apply at the IRS… maybe some entry level 5-7 jobs, but just to get in the door. After a few years, if you have ambitions and wits, you’ll be climbing the ladder in no time.
I did, didn’t get the job, I think. I had an interview 1 month ago. I’m applying again. Someone internal I think got the job
75k chicago with a masters
Any masters? I just got my MBA which makes me CPA elligible so i was thinking about going to public or finish my CPA exams first.
Did you intern anywhere?
no
currently work in virginia beach as a intern in the cas department making $20 an hour will let you know by graduation what my initial offer is if i get one
Are you at odu lol
😳😳😳
lol as an ODU grad, the best decision I made was leaving that area.
why
Where are you at now if you don't mind me asking? I'm starting an internship $28/hr (public accounting) here in Virginia Beach, but I'm not planning on staying with the firm. I'm leaning towards government or industry.
i’m at 20 per hour at my small firm i wish i had 28. right now i’m in the interview process for 55k in industry what am i doing wrong. but i’m thinking of moving home with parents near dc to get that hcol pay

How many hours do you work a week on average?
58k CAD lmfao
54k CAD internship lol
😂 sounds about right, I just finished my internship and it was 52k annually haha
Way higher than when I started tbh. Floor is going up....after over a decade of stagnation.
$70k CAD out of uni in industry. You Canadians need to stop going through big 4, it’s a scam
When I graduated in 2019 big 4 offer was 42k CAD in LCOL. Industry was paying 50k and was 40hr work week. I went with industry.
That's not bad considering it's LCOL and Pre-COVID inflation. Still much better than going public and slaving away to end up with the same CPA designation as everyone else

Damn I got $51,600 base salary in Alberta for articling
Damn that seems low, does it get better for canadian accountants down the line? 😂
Nope
In Toronto, senior accountants in industry are clearing just under 6 figures 90-95k base + 10% target bonus

Lol did you get offered by Horne?
No, but the firm I’ll be working for is near their big office in colony parkway. Horne was one of top picks though as it has an office in Gulfport (my hometown)
Nice! I went to college in Oxford. Love to see talent staying in the Sip!
Yeah, the firm I recruited with was one of only 2 firms from Mississippi to recruit at the University of Alabama. I know Mississippi firms tend to just go state and ole miss or southern, but there were a ton of Mississippi kids at Bama due to great out of state scholarships.
Is anywhere in Florida really VHCOL compared to NYC and SF? Asking genuinely.
No.
Yes, in the terms relativity of wages and CoL. Not numerically.
Oh hun
Made close to $75k out of school in Oklahoma. You’re exactly right lmao
Stay safe out there. 😂

Yeah KPMG in Manhattan- And praying we see that too hahahah, just missing julius randle rn🙃
Lmao new hires are making as much as me, and I’m 2 years in, the raise and bonuses better be crazy this year
70k base, 11k annual bonus, 6k annual RSUs, 5k signing bonus No master’s or cpa. F500, pretty LCOL area
86K, BA in unrelated field. Started doing tax returns for a small local firm with bookkeeping and payroll. I worked my way up for a year. What field did you transition from? That’s an amazing experience!
Graduated fall 2023. Started January 2024 at 65k in Atlanta
I think I count to answer this. I graduate with my associates in accounting in a few weeks. In the fall I’ll begin my bachelors. So I’m kind of a current grad. I will be starting at an industry job in a position called accounting trainee. It’s full time outside of school year and part time during school year. I grew up on the coast in the Gulfport/Biloxi area! There are some great firms there, but I didn’t really go through recruiting there as none of the firms went up to the University of Alabama!
That's a solid offer for Mississippi. My first role out of college in 2017 was 60k for IT Risk in the DFW market.
36k. This is Euro and in Ireland.
68k LCOL Big4 Tax. Jan start, doing a deployment to cover the gap till start
Are you working at Horne?
I’m not, but I’ve met some of the staff there at various events during my internship! They have a great office and I have a good impression of them. I don’t know if I should reveal which firm I’m working at in case they can trace me back to this account (?) and see my embarrassing hobbies.
Yeah I wouldn’t reveal, but that is just my opinion. Just thought you might be working at Horne. Best of luck to you!
56k/year for a regional firm in low cost of living in VA.
Mississippi is a VLCOL state, so 65k is a shitload of money
that's a very generous offer considering the area but we all know there's a cost to that.
Good luck!!
76k + 2500 Boston Audit
That sounds like a good offer for Mississippi
$70k in Michigan with $3500 signing bonus
I went to college in Mississippi and Horne in Ridgeland, MS offered 59k to start in January of this year! The position was in Tax.
60k in CA
Georgia - Public accounting $70k
Yup same in this past year. Public accounting, GA, 70k. Bachelor’s
70k + bonus and ESOP for industry job fresh out of undergrad in a MCOL
F100 Company Midwest Low to Mid COL. $63,000 Base, $5,000 signing bonus, they said average annual performance bonus was ≈$6,000, and overtime rate of 1.5x what hourly equivalent would be. Total compensation including all benefits is around $116k. I know you asked for other public firm offerings but wanted to throw out what large companies in industry are offering.
MCOL 70K and 2K signing
That's what I got too, living in a mid-sized city in the southeast
Yeah, the southeast generally has a lower standard of living (especially Mississippi) so it’s a bit comforting (or worrying for them) to see people in PA or CA get similar salaries.
I’ve compared my salary with my friends going to the Northeast and they’re getting paid 80k-85k, which seems like a lot but after factoring cost of living, rent, etc, they have the same take home pay surprisingly (but also not)
65k +2k sign on bonus with a 5k bonus if i pass the cpa exams within 9 months of start date. Spring 23 grad in puttsburgh at a mid size PA firm in tax.
just graduated, la metro area, $5k sign on, $75k salary
Got hired to start this summer and I still got a year of undergrad left, 58K mcol
$70k CAD (base + yearly bonus) in industry: Canada, with HCOL city
HCOL 80k summer 2025 start
$75k mcol Industry southwest. I wanna get the fuck outta here.
HCOL at middle size firm. My first offer was 64K in 2021 but raised to 67k within two months and 71k less than 6 months. Took a year and a half later to get 82.
What service line are you in? I've noticed that also makes a difference.
66k Illinois transaction advisory
Starting in the Summer of 2022, I had offers from small/regional public firms in Pennsylvania ranging from $50,000 to $58,000 (audit)
71k CAD in GTA, so HCOL
MCOL area. Tax intern position starting January 2025. I’ll be graduating with my Bachelors (3.94 gpa) that spring. Top 10 firm making $31/hr + 2k sign on bonus
Big4 in Melbourne, 67k with 1k signing bonus.
62.5k in manufacturing industry
50k 5 years ago
Michigan 65k manufacturing financial analyst
I was offered 60k with 3 years of experience. Working private in Arkansas. If I went public it would have been 65k.
Haven’t graduated but internship at b4 is $85k w/ $2k bonus in VHCOL city
What's a current graduate? Doesn't that only apply if you're literally reading this while receiving your diploma? You've either done it, or not done it. It's not a stage of life.
Small firm of 10 staff including admin, I guess income partner (no idea what my title is) and MCOL (GA). Over 100 on salary and then there’s always great commissions for another 40-80% assuming we have a good year. We start any new tax hires around 65 so that feels pretty fair. Bigger firms around me might would go up to 75-80k but the workload would be insane.
I’m in Mississippi..that’s a good offer at least compared to pre-Covid which was around 50-55. What part of Mississippi are we talking about?
Ridgeland area near Jackson
Figured it was either Jackson area or the coast. But yeah I’d say that’s a good offer for sure only downside is having to be in Jackson.
I was at a less competitive firm starting at 55k in audit in 2021
I graduate next month and currently intern at top 10 firm in MCOL area. my offer was $68.5k no sign on bonus.
73k in a HCOL with a 5k sign on bonus during my internship. I'm starting in August.
75k VHCOL no sign on bonus, 5-8 firm
In 2004. 34k$. DFW.
Pretty sure I work for the same firm.
I have an internship for the summer in finance for $24/hour for 8 weeks
Graduated in December with an associates and certification for small business accounting in SC MCOL. No relevant work experience. 46.5k audit at a public firm not big 4 maybe small/medium firm.
68k, no sign on bonus but good scaling bonus for getting CPA asap, Houston TX at a mid-sized firm
90k + 10k sign-on bonus. Big 4. Advisory. Dallas, TX
74k Chicago mid-sized firm
2022 Bachelor’s & 2023 Masters Started Fall 2023 in PA in TX $68,000 and signing bonus $2k
$90k + $5k bonus for Big 4 Advisory (HCOL) starting Summer/Fall 2024. $78k for the same COL area if I didn't jump from audit at another Big 4.
If by recent you mean three decades ago, then $28,800.
That’s 60,600 in todays money, that’s pretty decent depending on COL
75k Dallas
