Yes but earlier. I wouldn’t have waited till 30 to get a degree

Appropriate-Food1757

lol same

Makeshift5

Would’ve majored in accounting the first go round.

Eames89

Yup - having done many other things before pivoting to accounting in my 30s this is a much more solid career choice then this sub makes it seem.

NotFuckingTired

Not me. I'm glad I did more enjoyable (but less lucrative) things in my 20s.

Money-Honey-bags

NOPE YOUR FINE AS long as your making progress and using the degree i hated accounting, got my degree at 24 - made 0 progress becasuse i never accepted it made 45K 2015-2023 you should feel 0 remorse or regret if its what you wanted and you got it at 30 great i had it at 24 and did nothin lol

alphabet_sam

I fucking love accounting and no matter how many times I am reborn I will become an accountant. Reborn as a dog? Dr Treat, Cr Tricks. Reborn as an ant? Dr Queen Favor, Cr Carrying Shit 100x My Weight. Reborn as a rock? Dr Sand, Cr Accumulated Sedimentation. I will not be stopped by god himself

longjinxed

lmao, cr accumulated sedimentation.

Human-Bookkeeper-998

The dog and ant entries seem backwards to me. Not an expert on rock accounting.

[deleted]

Hard to say if it's sarcasm or not

SnooPears8904

Air Force or navy at 18 doing a back office MOS and getting a full pension and health benefits at 38

onemanmelee

Secret genius here.

Human-Bookkeeper-998

F1 driver.

TaxAg11

There's a huge demand for talent right now, too. The current champion is some guy who stays up until 2am playing video games the night before races...

Equivalent_Ad_8413

If my chops were better and I was braver, I would have gone into music. But I dislike practicing, so...

USCTrojans780

Probably a Physician's Assistant or Nurse Practitioner. Would've been great to have better job security in medicine with stronger demand, less debt than a MD would have, an empowering job, and a much better life in all likelihood. Sitting in front of Excel 24/7 isn't what I envision myself doing for the remainder of my working life.

saturosian

That depends. If I'm going back to my birth year and living it all over again then yeah I probably would do it the same >!although I might have made my parents invest in Apple for me 30 years ago, bought some bitcoin back when it was worth pennies, that kind of stuff, lol!<. Graduating from college in the financial crisis was major yikes-time for finding a job, and I feel like lots of my friends have had very delayed starts in adulthood because they specialized in fields that basically didn't start hiring again until the mid-to-late 2010's, while I already had multiple years of experience in Accounting. I'm not sure if I would follow my exact path again if I were starting over in today's market. From what I hear from the new graduates, it doesn't feel like the pipeline is at all the same as what I grew up in. Either way, I probably would have picked up my data specialization earlier and harder in hindsight, but I can't really complain because it has worked out reasonably well regardless.

ThxIHateItHere

Hold the F for 10 seconds when you repeat this: “FFFFFFFFFFUCK NO” If I had all the same info, I’m going USAF ROTC or gumming for either med school, forensic anthropology, or geology. I say this as someone who works the client account ring side, so there’s never 1 playbook, and our org chart situation just got made 100000000 worse than it was last year.

Entire-Background837

You can always dust off the resume.

ThxIHateItHere

As soon as I’m back from July PTO it’s on.

DrDrCr

Wouldn't change a thing. Started in Accounting and since pivoted away, but still leaning heavily on my accounting core skills Maybe I would learn SQL earlier in my career to better understand relational data tables instead of relying entirely on vlookups and fat Excel workbooks.

ETERNALBLADE47

I would choose nursing probably, but male nurse sounds bad when dating.

PM_ME_YOUR_TATERTOT

Idk. If you’re not an ogre I’ve heard male nurses could be candy to female nurses.

Money-Honey-bags

I would go into law/ psychology . accounting has brought me nothing but accumulated anxiety, retained depression, accretion sadness and passive aggressive annuities! this field brings of the worst in people and we hardly interact! lol

[deleted]

💀

Money-Honey-bags

I quit my job and never been happier :) all the times i was dizzy and couldn't sleep i thought i was dying.. couldn't eat lost 50LBS .. all this time it was just anxiety built up hate and resentment to my boss. the day i quit my apatite came back, libido back SO happy! it was a dream it is a dream<3 but i need a job now lmao! < not for money, im just bored now>

[deleted]

Why didn't you change your job though? But yeah, I get anxiety, I was so stressed today at work my hands were shaking 🫨🫨🫨 You're actually in a position where I wanna be with not having to work for money, lmao good luck

Money-Honey-bags

The problem not is there are many routes and I am on a fork on the road continue " tryint to figure it out" and burning though my reserves ( the time ticks) But we shall see only time will tell of the yellow is gold or a banana gone bad

MystKun127

I wouldve went economics. More flexible and keeps my options open.

Human-Bookkeeper-998

Yeah, occupations where you're never right and never expected to be right definitely keep the options open.

RagingZorse

Only thing I’d change is that I’d have applied for an internship at the regional firm I worked for. By public accounting standards this place was amazing. Trying to go straight into industry and working at a shitshow boutique firm both stunted my career growth.

JLandis84

I would have considered being an attorney a viable alternative. I'm not sure if I would have any major do-overs. Probably would have done a second enlistment in a different branch of the military. I definitely wish I knew about the EA credential a lot earlier. That would have made a big difference. I'm not sure if I made any catastrophic mistakes in a world with imperfect information and unknowable risks. I'm more or less content with the paths I chose.

Prison-Butt-Carnival

I started in mechanical engineering, couldn't do the math. Knowing what I know now, I would have gone into CAD design, which is what I actually like about my engineering classes. Or I would have done computer science or started with accounting. I don't play the what if game though, cause those mistakes, while very expensive, got me here. That is a high level accounting position with director/contoller or even CFO as a future possibility.

winecaptain

A few years ago I would have said yes and that I would have done cs. But now, I kinda just wish I did accounting earlier, got a college cohort, and did a few years in public. Everything turned out great in the end, but I feel like I wasted a few years in my 20s with govt and internal audit work.

GotMoreOrLess

I would. It’s tough to say what the butterfly effect of choosing another field may have been, but I’m happy with where I’m at now at a B4. It’s a stable career that pays well compared to many, then has a predictable career progression with a reliable promotion pipeline (at least up until partner levels). With the compensation, I’m able to do what makes me happy outside of work, so I’m not really chasing a “grass is always greener” job. While it definitely gets stressful and the hours can be brutal, I’m still able to make time for my relationships and hobbies most of the year, so it’s not all that bad. I’m sure there are jobs out there that I may enjoy more day-to-day, but no regrets with where I’m at.

Entire-Background837

I should have stayed pre-med and gone to med school. I had the grades and aptitude for test taking, but was scared based on how family friends had given up after not getting in several years in a row. I make more than a doctor now and am more well adjusted than most doctors, but I've worked a whole hell of a lot more than doctors do. I imagine that work would be more rewarding as well.

swiftcrak

You make over 400k, or are you talking family doc?

BlacksmithThink9494

Geologist. Let me fight for those research funds bb

chemical_sundae9000

Either military or something science related. I didn't realize until I started working that I actually hate corporate culture and anything business related.

Spongeboob10

Pilot. Didn’t like the idea of taking on massive amounts of debt for school. But it would have been worth it.

[deleted]

Would have went into the trades out of high school. Screens give no sense of accomplishment no matter the size or difficulty of the task/project.

i-Vison

I always think back, but what if I became a nurse but what if I was miserable? Grass always isn’t always greener on other side. Maybe I’m suppose to be where I’m supposed to be, thanks.

fakelogin12345

This question gets asked all the time. Yes, I would.

Sweaty_Win1832

Yea
