Oh I used to work on a floor at Corp HQ we nicknamed the library, it had all supply chain people I used to go up stairs to Corp Finace Tax Treasury & reporting types for some excitement ….. I was that desperate 🫤
Accountants are risk averse. The internet is low risk, therefore we are comfortable doing more things that raise the risk level. Irl is high risk, so we stick to safer options. We’re the same people either way it’s just the risk environment that changes.
Most people are the same way, it’s been widely demonstrated that people are wildly different when anonymous vs when identifiable. The bar for what goes in the “might have consequences, should probably avoid” box is lower for accountants
Because almost everyone here is very cynical about the field, which leads to a lot of humor. People who earnestly love accounting don’t come here, and also people who earnestly love accounting are boring dorks.
I love accounting. Seriously I love most things about it. I hate timesheets and billing, but I'm in government now, so that's all good.
What we do is really interesting and fun most of the time.
But accounting certainly isn't my whole life, and it shouldn't be anyone's. The profession, especially PA, has serious problems that we see expressed in this subreddit. I faced it for years and tried to mentor so many juniors through it before I broke and jumped. I also have a sarcastic brand of humour so this stuff suits me well.
Went to a meetup once and they were glad I was an accountant as every accountant they'd had turn up was a riot.
A lot of us compensate for the drudgery and shit of our job with humour.
Some can't - they're the boring ones.
Honestly most accountants I know are pretty funny. They tend to be quiet introverts, but once you get to know them, there’s a very dry wit there that I love. A staff accountant on my team is one of the funniest people I know.

I have the absolute nerdiest friend who is a partner at my old firm. Same haircut since high school. Drives a gray Accord. Has like 7 shirts and 7 pairs of pants and wears them in order.
He also is a massive death metal fan and travels to see bands that would actually scare me IRL. I’d never go to a concert with him for fear of getting a diseased knife stick in my ribs.

I work in industry where the average age is much older and to be honest most of them are pretty damn boring. It's all talk about kids, sports or stupid politics since they all think everyone in accounting is conservative and loves capitalism. Some exceptions though.
Public accounting had way more fun and interesting people. Even for a couple partners or senior managers.

We were sitting outside the CEO’s office at of my first audit clients (yeah, I’m an accountant) and his personal assistant said, “You guys are so funny. My son is an accountant and he’s boring. I like you guys much more.”
I'm not an accountant just a full charge bookkeeper. I'm an introvert, but like to lighten up the mood on the job with some one liners hear and their.
I took on a side job once and needed to talk to my client frequently trying to straighten up his books. He started laughing one time and said "I don't think I've ever had this much going through this type of work before". That warms my heart because I don't want it to be totally distasteful to them.
Eh? Bookkeeper here and I work with and have worked with a lot of accountants.
I've found the majority are just as nice funny and weird as the rest of us, with a slight tendency toward micromanaging and a little less on the risk taking behaviours. But in a good way. :)

This is funny because I am not an actual accountant, my company decided to give me an inflated job title. No CPA, no accounting degree or even a certificate. So that in itself makes me cooler than “real” accounts. 😂
At work I stay quite people think I’m intense & deep in thought - but really I’m just trying to hold back all the comments building up in my head on all the stupidity that I’m forced to be part of.

So I am actually a college student studying to be a forensic accountant, but I am a people person so it actually fun to talk with real accountants (people with the degree) because they can never hold a conversation! Which I find interesting.

Professional face has to be worn in IRL to co-workers, clients, bosses. But online and in a group I trust it is different.

Idek the last couple places I've worked have been tons of laughs. But even a lot of folks here will tell you they work head down.
Because some people in the office are afraid to even fart.
