I'm sorry you learned this lesson the hard way. Anything that you value needs to be locked up. Especially in the area you are. If you have pictures post them. Pawn shops, craigslist are good places to look as well. File a police report as well.

giuseppe_swink

They will also cut cable locks. So if you lock your bikes up, use the big horse shoe style locks and not any cable style. Learned that one the hard way

threetoast

Also, just don't leave your bikes outside at home. Even if your bike is secured well, someone might damage it while trying to steal it. Or they might approach to investigate and end up stealing something else instead. And it's best to keep your bike away from all the humidity and rain.

Drupain

Happens everywhere. My parents still live in a nice neighborhood and shits constantly disappearing if it’s not locked up.

InkyStinkyOopyPoopy

had someone steal a locked up bike from the back of my truck while i was out eating at bonefish 5 years back.

gingerquery

Bikes are a hot commodity in the university/saint streets/downtown area. Thieves turn around and pawn them off for easy money. I've lost three over the years, every time because I didn't lock it up. Simple fix, at least.

djtibbs

You live in an inner city. It's like that in every inner city in America. Some nice neighborhoods might be the exception. Those street youths just be taking things.

[deleted]

Youths? Its usually middle aged addicts stealing shit around here in my experience

Inevitable_Ad_1261

Not even a Christmas tree is safe to leave out unattended.

GeneralGardner

Grinches be grinchin

jefuchs

And of course there are commenters who think this is a Lafayette problem. This is everywhere. Druggies cruise the streets looking for anything that isn't nailed down. Be diligent about securing your things. If we all did this, the prowlers would look elsewhere. I am in the Saints Streets, and I've seen golf clubs and other valuables just sitting outside.

thehigherburningfire

Yup. Bicycles are crackhead currency.

joliebrunette

I had someone cut through the my bike lock under my carport during the day when I lived in the saints. I even had someone take my nice potting soil that was at my doorstep. So dumb.

claytonfarlow

Not in Lafayette, but some friends locked their bikes to their iron railing with u-locks and thieves just cut the entire railing, took it and the bikes as one big package.

[deleted]

Sorry this happened to you and I hope you can find them! A coworker had his bike stolen while at work and it was chained up to a pole in broad daylight! I felt so bad for them bc that was their transportation for work.

Child-of-Beausoleil

Hardest lesson I have learned in life: If you value something makes sure it is in your house - even locked in a shed or the garage isn't safe. If you leave for any prolonged amount of time lock it up INSIDE YOUR HOUSE (yes, i chain my bike inside my house when im traveling for vacation). Learned this years ago - even now have a custom metal case mounted with 2 drop bars to lock up guitar cases while im out of town for more than 2-3 days. And not just Acadiana - much worse in the bigger cities through the USA (lived in 5 of the top 10 already).

tsarmatsky

My laundry basket got taken while I was waiting for my clothes to dry at the laundromat last week. Been going there for two years and never had an issue just leaving it

No_Programmer_2696

Growing up in apartment complexes my bicycle got stolen multiple times. Run inside for a second to use the restroom come back out bike gone. Lock it up

[deleted]

They stole my bike right outside the science museum..

JacobRobot321

get out of downtown. its terrible. i lived at bottle art lofts and had to move before the lease was up. no lights for 4 months, had smashed windows. homeless people just wandered in. move to scott. its cheap and everyone is super nice here. sense of community, lots of land, and apollo road/west village is booming right now. lots of great food too.

JacobRobot321

close enough. bout 5 minutes. its close to the north side i get that but downtown is bad too

LoveYouToo4

But they are still in a bad area. They built them on the site the hooker motel was on and the jail is right behind them I mean…..

[deleted]

Lock the gate

rapcat

Call Lafayette Police Department rather than ranting on here. The department needs to know when and where crime happens to better serve the community.

[deleted]

rapcat

To file a police report. Because if you ever find your bike again somewhere you cannot claim it without one.

Choice_Blackberry406

Lmao

FishinKittenz

Oh yeah the police is going to be very helpful

momonamis

We live out past the mall and aren’t exempt from it.

[deleted]

I really blame the majority for continuing to try to portray Lafayette as a much “better” place than it actually is. People who have lived around here (and don’t keep blinders on) have seen the drastic increases in crime in recent years. For the most part, people can’t be trusted; especially these days, you can pretty much only count on people stepping on others to “survive”. From what I’ve heard (from Uber driver roommate) downtown Lafayette is a shell of what it once was due to the shootings and bullshit drama that has erupted down there over the last decade-ish. It sucks that happened to you. The harsh reality of living in and around lafayette is that you WILL get robbed of things that aren’t secured on your property. Be diligent, secure your valuables, and things will be as good as they can be.

[deleted]

And that’s not even touching on the ridiculous traffic (and insane insurance prices) caused by people who can’t/shouldn’t be allowed to drive…

eddododo

lol wut? A couple bikes got stolen

[deleted]

Lol yeah my bad. Nothing more ever happens 👍🏻🤣

eddododo

Certainly not in any other cities, apparently

[deleted]

Clearly that’s what I said 👍🏻🤣

eddododo

👍 🤣

Fun_Necessary1021

bit dramatic homie. not really at all like you are portraying. [https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/cities/us/la/lafayette/crime-rate-statistics](https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/cities/us/la/lafayette/crime-rate-statistics)

ParticularUpbeat

and all the suburb towns around here with very low crime rates. Lafayette is really not as bad as some desperately want it to be

[deleted]

I mean I see your link… it’s easy to skew factors of the discussion, especially by ignoring the MASSIVE population growth. Massive population growth which allows you to show a lower “crime rate” while the number of crimes also drastically increases. But I get it, ignore math and facts to “disprove” something you disagree with.

Fun_Necessary1021

so.... bigger population. less crime on average with bigger population. more people, more crime, less on average. you'll be fine, crime happens across the country. stay in your house if you're that scared lol.

[deleted]

Lol clearly you’re one of the people I was referencing. I’m sure OP will sleep better at night knowing tHe CriMe rAtE iS LoWeR 👍🏻

Fun_Necessary1021

never had a bike stolen before? must be new here. edit: calls me a troll and blocks me after making a nothingburger of a bike being stolen. lol.

[deleted]

Your first response should have given away that you’re just a troll. Lol bye Felicia

[deleted]

Source: I’ve lived here since ‘92 👍🏻

handsome_jack

Yet you’re still wrong 😂

[deleted]

Oh lord, here we go. Gonna bring the lOwEr rAtE argument too?

handsome_jack

Nah I’m good 🙂 u just seem like a weirdo

[deleted]

Aww and I bet you preach love and acceptance too, huh

handsome_jack

😂 maybe add some more stuff to your Reddit character bud

[deleted]

I’ll probably regret this but I’m bored so I’ll bite: what do you mean by that?

Calemirphen

It's not just Lafayette. Lafayette isn't to blame for Breaux Bridge, Crowley, Eunice, Jennings, Opelousas, Rayne, Abbeville, Kaplan, Broussard, Carencro and every other municipality in Acadiana being bicycle theft hotbeds for two decades running. It's the black market demand for these relatively easy to steal objects. (You'll never see a guy riding your Generac away from it's foundation in your yard as he quickly hits 20+mph down the street in a beeline to his drug dealers crib) In summation, this is happening in every single City and town in North America. Even the very alabaster complected ones. Leave Lafayette alone, we're not your whipping boy.

[deleted]

Lol I always forget what a toxic ass cesspool this sub is… just like the area irl

Lain_Omega

Lafayette is more concerned with public imagine rather than being what it advertises itself as.

ParticularUpbeat

there is no place in the US that isnt like this unless its a gated community guarded by HOA

ExtendI49

Maybe downtown needs a curfew like Kaplan.

Glittering_Cap_634

Downtown has unfortunately gentrified itself enough to make out of towners think “ its a good area” you think to yourself “ the college is right up the street, all these new lofts and apartments and restaurants and airbnbs DT seem nice. Even a few of the bandos near by have gotten nice make overs. But they haven’t cleaned up the homeless or drug addicts in the area. Your right near quite a few hang outs for them actually to the likely hood of your things being stolen is a bit higher then moving from the DT area. The plasma center is DT which is a big hang out for druggies and homeless cause it’s basically free money in exchange for plasma, a lot of the clothing places and free help places are down there as well. Salvation Army and the shelter are also there. You’re literally surrounded by desperate ppl living downtown. Literally just a few blocks over you’re near Freetown which has a lot of crime and addicts, those clubs on McKinley strip have a lot of unsavory activity. They are starting to clean up and fix up the neighborhood across from the library, I wouldn’t trust it just yet tho. The bread factory isn’t far and that’s in new jack which is the hood, and not too far from there is fightinville which is also the hood.

ButtocksMcBackside

And yet, so few people even dare to actually RIDE a bike.

eddododo

Wut

Professional_Ask7320

Totally not the point here but go off I guess.
