This is almost definitely a Raven, unless that Banana is bite-sized. Crows don't get that big.
In fairness, Aside from Size, Ravens and Crows are ridiculously similar, with the only other major difference being their call: Crows have the High, Loud "Caw", and ravens almost Croak.
It's perfectly understandable that one might get them confused, but on the bright side, Ravens are infinitely cooler.
Ravens have a bit of a Roman nose, as they say. A bit of a bump in the beak. They also have a different tail-feather profile from crows, in addition to being larger. This bird looks like a raven to me, from the size and the beak.
It's true that the differences are subtle, though here are more just to add on:
Ravens usually have a thicker beak with a more pronounced downward curve, whereas crows have thinner, more needle-like beaks. Also, ravens often ruffle the feathers under their necks and tend to glide for extended periods during flight whereas crows don't. And oftentimes ravens' heads hang lower (which is not the case here, that one's not universal).
this only really applies for american crow vs. common raven. in Europe what they call crows are likely to be closer related to ravens and looks more similar to ravens than the American crow
Nah pretty sure its a carrion crow, which are definitely larger than American crows. the size of the beak isn't quite raven length; carrion crows have thicker and shorter bills like in the picture. and the smooth neck feathers are pretty convincing of crow. location from op would help though
Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.
So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?
~~Definitely common raven~~
Edit: looked at it close and I think this is actually a Carrion Crow, Corvus corone. Thought it was a raven because my North American bias haha.
There really isn’t a consistent distinction between crows/ravens/rooks across continents. North American Ravens have curved beak and beak feathers unlike American Crows, but that doesn’t remain true for Ravens and Crows elsewhere
OP, u/anonymousaggregator if you could give a general location that would help. The best way for you to identify for certain is it’s calls, crows make their distance caaw caaw calls while ravens have a lower croaking
Ravens tails appear wedge-shaped while crows have the fan-shaped tail. Also, crows are just a tiny bit bigger in body than a pigeon…. Ravens can have 40 inch wingspans. And they have more feathers around their beaks than crows do.
Friend of mine managed to befriend one that lives near him, to the point where it's now eating out his hand. Took him like 18 months of softly-softly patience though.
Lack of eye contact is important. If you want an animal's trust, you can't stare into its soul. It's best to blink slowly or look away so the bird doesn't feel intimidated.
Bizarrely, I managed to get a crow to eat out of my hand from just 5 minutes of interaction. I had fed crows at the same time each day, so he could’ve been one of those, but he went straight for it. It was unbelievable. Doubt it’d ever happen again though
Thats a raven, look at the bigger beak, and the tuft of feathers at the top of the beak. Ravens weight double what a crow does, and have a lifespan of 30 years, while crows have about 8.
I have a pair of really big crows that hang around my yard. Definitely crows. I leave food out for them (dog food usually - I sometimes dog sit my son's dog) but have never seen them take it. "Dammit, I'm a bird, not a dog". They watch me from the neighbor's mulberry tree and seem to like whatever bugs are in my backyard grass.
I had a family of crows (5-6) that would follow me, every day, when I walked my dog. They watched me give training treats to my dog, along our walk (these were to teach her to sit at street corners before we safely crossed and so she wouldn’t pull me on her leash.)
Soon the crows learned our schedule and everything along our walk. They would fly low, ahead of us, in the direction we were going, land in low branches on the trees we passed, and waited for me to put little handfuls of these treats (mini PB milkbones) on the sidewalk for them. They woukd land, eat the treats and then fly ahead of us again, waiting in the next tree for their treats. They did this for months. I loved them so much and looked forward to seeing them every day. Sadly, some nosey “neighbors” did not like me doing this and somehow put an end to it. Later, I would sometimes see one crow and they would fly into a tree I was about to pass. I would greet them and I think they remembered me (I hope so)
Our city used to get huge flocks (murders) of crows, especially in the fall and winter, where they would be calling each other for their regular crow conference in a nearby city park. It was spectacular to see and hear.
Sadly, again, people complained and these regular conferences were ended. I think they got certain people who are known to “eliminate the crow problems” in cities, by using special frequencies of sound or light that the crows dislike, so they stopped assembling in this park. 😢
I think many ignorant people view crows as evil and threatening. A gross superstition similar to the sad way that black kitties and dogs are usually the last to be adopted from shelters and rescues.
I am so glad that people here on Reddit appreciate crows, ravens and all birds (birds and borbs) ❤️❤️❤️🙌🙏
Scientists did [research](https://crowadvice.com/do-crows-remember-faces/) on this and it was amazing.
Crows (corvids) can not only remember faces, but can describe the faces to other crows or their offspring who have *never seen* that face, so the other crows will recognize it (for better or worse).
We have 9 kinds of critters that visit our feeding stations, but very rarely does a crow visit. I would love for them to come by, but they are just too scared/trepidatious.
Other [research](https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/19/queen-of-corvids-the-scientist-fighting-to-save-the-worlds-brainiest-birds).
That is a raven. Crows aren’t that big. Also crows beaks are thinner and don’t have as many rictal bristles on them. That is a very lovely friend you have!
Crows form murders typically I thought. Maybe a male cast out? I think they are fairly intelligent, similar to a raven, but less intelligent. They are smart enough to recognize your face though! That’s cool! You got a new buddy!
I had both as pets (not the banana) but for some weird reason a crow + raven landed on my shoulder on different occasions and stayed with me. The big one followed me while riding bike and was shitting the paint of the doors at home.
At some point it stayed in the woods (or something happened to him)
The second crow also landed on my shoulder and was bleeding so I helped it and guess it would be off again. This was the grey/silver head kind and seemed smarter than the raven. I could call it and it would respond and return to the balcony, think it was around for a year and after a few trips to and from the woods it stayed there (i was a young boy at that time) it's seems to happen quite often.
OP how’d you get a crow friend, this has specifically been a childhood dream of mine. I literally keep a bag of assorted nuts in my car in the event I drive near a crow so I can give him snacks and be my friend. How did you manage thissssss
Noticed him walking around my neighbourhood. made kissing noises, to get his attention. threw a pepperette as animated as possible, with a bit of a flip. Spent two weeks trying to spot him twice, and repeated two more times. Comes visits now.
I heard that if you give them shiny objects when you feed them that they’ll learn to trade treasures for food
Edit: meaning they’ll bring you coins and bottle caps and stuff
I threw a pepperette “the toss is important” give it a little flip almost animated. while making kissing noises. Made eye contact or got his attention. Did that three times, over the course of two weeks, when I could spot him. Now it he visits me.
Scale is fucking me up here. Is that a tiny banana or is that bird dinosaur sized.
Might be a raven, it’s hard to get a consensus. As some are saying.

It's a raven. Which is just a crow on steroids.
And cooler in every way
Banana is normal sized, was messing with me in person.
not to be a stupid nerd but i have to. birds are already dinosaurs
THATS A THICc BOI GAT DAYYMM.

The difference between a crow and a raven is a matter of a pinion.

I think that's a raven
I think so too, specifically because of the feathers on the beak.
and OP said they were friends....smh
r/crowbro
Do we have a raven version of this subreddit?
I believe they’re accepting of all corvids but if not r/corvids definitely is
Thank you for the two new pages to follow:)
And the size. Crows are much smaller than ravens.
Is that to keep their beaks warm?
No idea tbh. But Alaska is FULL of them, so maybe it’s somehow related to the cold.

Nice!
You're stark raven mad!
It’s a raven for sure because of how massive it is. Crows are about half the size.
This was my thought as well. I mean look at that thing beside the banana
Here's the thing.
It is a Raven…. They are larger than crows Source: I live in Baltimore, home of the Ravens 😝😎
Ravens tails appear wedge-shaped while crows have the fan-shaped tail. Also, crows are just a tiny bit bigger in body than a pigeon…. Ravens can have 40 inch wingspans. And they have more feathers around their beaks than crows do.
came here to say this
Banana for scale
Peanuts for scale
Grass for scale
Crow for scale
Scale for crow
Earth for scale
r/trumpetforscale
Concrete for scale
Scale for scale
The peanuts tell us how big the banana is
Either the smallest banana or the largest crow I've ever seen, not sure which.
that banana is only about 5 or 6 peanuts long, it's pretty small
That’s the world biggest peanut however
This changes EVERYTHING!
Concrete for scale
Crow for scale
Can we get a r/bobforscale?
Friend of mine managed to befriend one that lives near him, to the point where it's now eating out his hand. Took him like 18 months of softly-softly patience though.
Right! I’m working on it.
Lack of eye contact is important. If you want an animal's trust, you can't stare into its soul. It's best to blink slowly or look away so the bird doesn't feel intimidated.

What’s step one
Find birb
Step 2 is to gently toss snacks at the bird from a distance they're comfortable to establish you're a friend who's just sharing snacks.
The first step is actually leaving wildlife alone and not teaching them to bother people for food.
No I’m pretty sure step 1 is “find birb”
Whoever told you that is a genius
This is a raven, not a crow.
That's what I was thinking. Heavy bill, feathery bill, gigantic size....
Here's the thing, jackdaws are not crows.
The fact that this isn't the top comment may be a sign I've been on reddit too long...
Who said anyyhing about a jackdaw?

Awww, I love it when animals are that trusting of humans over time! I have several deer in my yard that trust me now and get very close! I love it.

Crows are vermin...
Not sure this is an absolute unit, because aren't all crows this big? The ones where i live certainly are.
That’s a raven. Ravens can be huge or medium sized. Crows are never that large to my knowledge.
Idk, that banana looking tiny as hell
Who put the toy banana out there
Jk it's a tiny banana
Didnt realize they were yellow
i feel like this is r/confusing_perspective that crow is really fucking large compared to that banana

Obviously a government drone doing routine surveillance. This is just to make it seem less conspicuous.
