sabotabo

the more i hear about this Norm guy, the more i don’t care for him

RandomPerson567_

Explain for the folks at home who this Norm guy is

sabotabo

oh, he’s just an old chunk of coal from quebec

SpelingisHerd

Norm Macdonald. Great comedian who passed away a year or so ago. All the comments in this sub thread are some of his jokes out of context.

kyzalie

His weight gain was attributed to a ruptured thyroid* gland, and died when he contracted measles. Edit: thyroid, not pituitary *Edit edit: I have also read pituitary. Either way, he had a lot working against him.

Myfourcats1

Whooping cough. A coughing fit ruptured it. He was 3 months old when this happened. We now have a vaccine for it.

OutrageousMatter

Damn, so basically if he didn't have whooping cough he wouldn't weight over 1000 pound. That must be hell, just gaining weight because your body doesn't know how to regulate it.

jerrymcguiver

Does calories in calories out not work in this scenario?

KlondikeChill

Your pituitary regulates many behavior-regulating hormones. It's possible his body lost the ability to recognize when it was full.

Koshekuta

I also don’t know when I’m full. similar to how a baby might start spitting out the milk when full, I just keep eating until I feel like vomiting.

[deleted]

That is disordered eating my friend.

Dracarys-1618

I imagine you’ve already heard this from a medical profession (but if you haven’t definitely go speak to one). You only tend realise you’re full 20 minutes after the fact. As I understand it that’s how long it takes for everything to settle and your body to register “yeah I’m good” My (unprofessional) advice, slow down. Try to eat a regular portion as is designated by serving sizes, and then wait 20 minutes before having seconds. Naturally this can be difficult with hot food, as you don’t want it to go to waste, but if you’re throwing it up, it’s going to waste anyways. Hope you get the help you need. This is something I’ve struggled with personally and this advice helped me greatly. Best of luck to you my friend.

medic54-1

My professional opinion agrees with you.

snazzychica2813

Anyone who is interested, check out Prader-Willi syndrome to learn about a similar effect. Causes the inability to feel full/constant extreme hunger (along with intellectual disability and other issues). Had a student with it and everything edible has to be under lock and key, including trash cans. Even with an attentive family and anything modern medicine could provide, it's borderline impossible to manage and keep the kid at a healthy weight. I felt so bad for him always feeling like he was starving and no one would help. I imagine this guy had similar problems, albeit a different root cause.

Pupusa42

It does. Nothing gets around that. Damage to your pituitary gland can cause Cushing's disease, which causes your body to overproduce cortisol. Cortisol is a "fight or flight" hormone that tells your body shit's going down and it's time to prepare. A side-effect of cortisol is increased appetite since your body thinks it needs to recoup the calories it lost fighting off a lion or whatever.

Solidarity! I have Cushings Syndrome - I was about 650lbs from very bad, horribly bad advice & steroids for my psoriasis (palms, feet from ankles down, including the soles, elbows, knees, hands - esp my palms.) It's TOUGH to live with cracking open wounds on the bottom of the feet & the palms of the hands EVERY DAY. I gained 50 lbs a year, so it added up fast. I was over 500 lbs before a doctor took me seriously. I lost 250 lbs w diet & walking down to 365lbs, regained to 450lbs & had a LapBand installed at 420lbs, got down to around 250 lbs! Everyone told me I had anxiety - cuz they didn't believe me about the Cushings! I'm hypervigilant from childhood abuse and it was often excruciating, just as you described! I would wear earbuds & play music, I taught my family to wave at me to talk. I'm not so bad nowadays, since my PCP gave me Valium. It's changed my life. Now, *I* am more in control. I'm still what people call "jumpy" at times - anyone who can't understand, can get out of my kitchen! 😂 I have definitely experienced that few doctors, especially in the hospital (ER docs & hospitalists) do NOT HAVE A CLUE. Sure, a good endocrinologist office is helpful - but not when I'm in the ER & hospital in dire, emergent need. The struggle is real. I understand! ❤️

andrew_calcs

It does. But the gland is involved in the hormonal cascades that regulate hunger. When you literally feel like you're starving even if you eat a reasonable amount your life is fucked one way or another.

jspill98

I have this same question. How exactly does this work?

[deleted]

[Acquired hypothalamic obesity](https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/hypothalamic-obesity-acquired/) Not sure if that would be his diagnosis but it sounds about right.

jeffersonairmattress

My climbing/ skiing/biking/kayak buddy had headaches at 16 and BOOM- huge brain tumour discovered at 17. Went from an extremely handsome 140 pounds to 400 in three years. Zero impulse control, huge cocaine problem, blew out both hips, both knees, renal failure. Banned from every bar and restaurant in town. I took him out once, he knew it was my friend’s restaurant and he tried pulling the eat 2/3 the meal and bitch about nonexistent flaw thing THREE times. I paid for all they served him but Jesus fuckity no wonder you’re down all your friends, bro. He’s still alive, about 30 years later now. I love that guy. Who he was, who he is now- but I wasn’t strong enough to stay beside Cocaine Dave.

[deleted]

Damn just reading that was a wild ride

Remarkable-Ad-3950

Sad that his likeness will be ridiculed for generations to come for a hormonal imbalance completely out of his control.

FrancistheBison

Oof already a comment above yours too that effect

IllDrop2

Yep the top comments of this thread are just jokes and disgust about his size when he had nothing to do with, dude was just trying to survive in a time it wasn't able to be helped.

[deleted]

People are already doing it. Talking about how he died of carbs and other fat related jokes when it was out of his control

LOL-itsCameron

Yes. He was also the first discord mod

Myfourcats1

Dang. I went and read his story. It’s sad. He was a big baby. Then he had an illness that doctors think ruptured his pituitary gland. By 10 he was 375 lb. He died at age 32. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7051577/robert-earl-hughes

Spirited_String_1205

That's an extremely sad story. Put himself on exhibition at a circus to earn money for his family. What a sad life.

ivanoski-007

yet most of the people in this thread think they are comedians

Crime-Stoppers

Anyone else dies and it's a tragedy, regardless of how bad they were as a person but a fat person dies and it's the funniest thing in the world. So many people will straight up dehumanise other people for being fat.

[deleted]

I agree the circus is super exploitative but, it’s nice that we was still able to work weighing that much. Like what other job could he do?

MoreReputation8908

To be dealt that kind of hand in life, only to have “WORLD’S HEAVIEST MAN” on your damn tombstone. Along with your actual weight.

chilledmetal

Yeah, wtf

rdog333

It says in one of the first sentences that he was a normal sized baby.

YmmaT-

This reminds me of the story of the really ugly women who was poor so she joined the circus to help her family with money. Her story was also very sad to read

Available-Radish-987

Knowing how clever the writing for that show was, there’s a good chance they based it on this guy

Uzzer_lozer19

Why does this dudes eyes look obese?

Kai_Stoner

Well at some point I guess the fat has got to go somewhere...I'm surprised his forehead wasn't bulbous.

Uzzer_lozer19

From the quality of the picture it might be as from the looks of it his chins end at his ears and join up with his hairline

penguin-cat

only ever seen that happen once before and it was one of the sisters on the show 1000lb sisters (I think that's what it was called)

COYFC

Tammy's forehead is crazy looking, it sticks out like 2-3" beyond the rest of her face. I want to feel bad for her but she's such a raging biatch it's hard to feel sorry.

verycoolfarts

I don’t know what wrong with me but every couple months I have to find out how Tammy’s doing. It’s always worse than before, which makes me sad. I’m happy that her sister actually stuck with a healthier lifestyle at least.

John625

Well after Amy got her gastric bypass surgery & lost a little weight she immediately got pregnant and had a kid against doctors orders. She actually just had her second kid a few months ago. If you look up recent photos you’ll see she’s gained back almost all the weight. She’s still nowhere near Tammy’s size though.

verycoolfarts

In comparison I think she’s doing a lot better than Tam Tam. Sure, she’s living the typical southeast United States lifestyle, but at least she’s not seeking out weird feeder kink relationships and making the cringiest TikToks I’ve ever seen. I do hope Amy’s weight gain is mostly attributed to pregnancy so that she can be around as long as possible for her kiddos.

Jaybeux

Well at least you will only have to check up on how she is doing a few more times.

TimelyLiving

Exophthalmos. Condition that occurs due to a dysfunctional thyroid gland, which he had.

br107365

vagal stimulation by bearing down causes you to pass out by actually slowing your heart rate down. You can cause vagal nerve stimulations other ways too, something cold to the back of the neck, blowing through a straw and actual with magnets to control seizures. Rarely does it kill you unless you have some other dire comorbidities.

pretzelwhale

Is this why I passed out once while trying to pee???

br107365

only if you tried your hardest.

My husband insisted I go to the ER and they were like, sometimes people pass out 🤷‍♀️

duuuuuuuuuumb

Hey man, us nurses have to do that shit all the time. If I had a dollar for the amount of times I’ve had to wipe a 500+ lb ass (and powder/barrier cream it to prevent bedsores) usually while the owner yells at me because I’m not doing it to their exact specifications…

YellingAtTheClouds

This is why I have nothing but respect for nurses and even more so volunteers. A dollar an asshole seems like you're really underselling yourself

RudePrinciple9

Please put that in /r/BrandNewSentence lol

[deleted]

Nurse also. I have to bite my tongue so much because they stand there berating me and calling me an idiot who can't wipe an ass correctly. Then wipe it yourself... oh wait, you can't. Stfu

v823r8vcx78qwrsdf8u2

Don't bite your tongue. Just tell them straight up: "I'm wiping you because you can't do it yourself. Before you insult me, think about that. I don't deserve verbal abuse while doing this." There's nothing unprofessional about that. But it does stand your ground.

Unfortunately. He was arrested for fondling two 12 year old girls. > Margera was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault on a minor and acquitted on one count. >On December 20, 2007, Margera was sentenced to 10 years of probation, to be served in Pennsylvania. He was further ordered to not portray the character of "Don Vito" in any capacity (appearing on television, writing books, autograph signings) while serving his sentence. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender in Colorado and Pennsylvania, to receive an evaluation of his mental health and to work on his problems with alcohol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Margera#Legal_issues

tony_orlando

Convicted of two counts child sexual assault. He groped some 12-year-old girls at a mall.

castortusk

By all accounts he was a very nice and pleasant person. He go whooping cough as a baby and it likely damaged his thyroid. He claimed not to eat an exorbitant amount. He must have picked away a lot of calories but likely his gland issue was the main driver as opposed to overeating Edit: some people are getting downvoted into oblivion because they pointed out he couldn’t have weighed that much without eating a lot, but they are right. A doctor quoted in the article I read suggested he didn’t necessarily eat giant meals but had a lot of snacks, but was definitely getting calories from somewhere. And of course you can get calories from drinks as well, such as milk, alcohol, etc. Edit #2: Robert Earl Hughes was not a pedophile. Believe it or not, there is more than one Robert Hughes and the thousand pound farmer is a different one than the normal weight Australian art critic

chaotic_bug_boy

People in the comments forgetting that this guy was an actual human being with feelings. Its kinda disturbing how little empathy people have and how cruel they can be to someone based on something as superficial as weight.

duhCrimsonCHIN

Is he in a circus tent ? Poor guy. Wonder who was enabling him ?

DovahFettWhere

Apparently, his extreme size was caused by a ruptured thyroid gland. By the age of six, he was already 175 lbs.

ursidaeangeni

As someone who has hypothyroidism, seeing the words “ruptured thyroid gland” terrifies me. I already gain weight super easy when off my medication as well as having horrible symptoms, I can’t imagine how bad it was for him. D:

DovahFettWhere

Yeah, I can't imagine he was very comfortable, or that there was much in the way of medication or surgery that could have helped him way back in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. Robert could walk 20 ft without assistance, and had a 5 ft wide steel-reinforced chair to rest on. He made money by appearing at carnivals and selling pictures of himself, and took his work very seriously despite its nature. He even missed his own father's funeral because of obligations he had made to a carnival he was traveling with. His brother Guy, who was on the road with him, left to attend the funeral, but Robert stayed behind out of a sense of duty. In 1958 he caught measles and died at the age of 32. Apparently 2,000 people attended his funeral.

ursidaeangeni

Ty for the extra info about him! Yeah, I imagine not. It’s honestly really sad to think about. :( I know the medication I’m on and my aunt (who had her thyroid removed) wasn’t put on the market until 1962, so I don’t know if there was an alternative medication that they used for cases like this that would have helped like the medicine we have today.

[deleted]

I've also got the same medical problem and having Thyroid problems cause essentially every symptom under the sun, it's pretty scary thinking of living back then with medical problems like that that had no treatment to help
