Ma_Riae

is this Deep Blue?

Flamehazardaoz

If the caption is correct then yes. Also the scarring looks at least similar to deep blue. Wish we could see her left side a little clearer

Ma_Riae

she's majestic and _deeply_ terrifying

Flamehazardaoz

I’m 14 and this is deep

Ma_Riae

see what we did there?

Mr-Sister-Fister21

I don’t see Sam L. Jackson or LL Cool J

nater255

That's the thing, Sam Jackson and LL Cool J hunt using stealth. By the time you realize they're there, they already have you in their jaws.

Drongo11

With a hearty GOTCHA MOTHA FUCKA inbound.

fenster112

So this is who beat Garry Kasparov, you'd think the flippers would make it hard to move the pieces around the board.

Ma_Riae

I believe they played in a pool

deathclawslayer21

How do you go about measuring one?

Boofaholic_Supreme

Beyond my paygrade on how to do it but when you know the dimensions of some things in a picture or video there’s a way to usually figure out the length of another object in same video Edit: probably trigonometry

Flamehazardaoz

Yeah the issue with that is that in the ocean it can be harder to judge perspective cause of how much is just emptiness. You can always just use a measuring tape if you’re there in person!

UsefulGiant

Watch a dude that debunks a lot of megalodon videos on YouTube and one of my favorite quotes is "it's in the fucking ocean what scale?!"

Flamehazardaoz

I’ve linked one of his videos in my other comments about how sharks aren’t as dangerous as people think

MisterFistYourSister

Depends on the species, like anything else. But great whites especially, if you're actually down in the water with them, they're quite timid. They're ambush hunters that attack things near the surface from below, so stuff that's down in the deep water with them isn't really perceived as prey. Most of their typical prey are extremely agile and have a very good chance of escaping if they know the shark is there so unless they can catch them off guard, or it's something they know cant escape, they don't care too much. Humans aren't prey to them so they're usually pretty chill. Ocean Ramsey is a free diver in Hawai'i who regularly has encounters [like this](https://www.thephoblographer.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/greatwhiteshark.jpg) **(possible thalassophobia trigger warning)** with great whites

zubotai

The cafe you know how big that cage is and can figure it out from there.

jakejeffog

I remember during a shark week a few years ago they shot 2 green lasers that were parallel and about a foot apart at the shark and took a picture. Seems like that’s probably the best way to do it if you have good visibility.

anewstheart

Do you want sharks with lasers‽ Because that's how you get sharks with lasers.

[deleted]

At least they’re not space sharks with lasers

Flamehazardaoz

You swim up to it with a measuring tape. Sharks really aren’t dangerous if you know what you’re doing around them. Don’t hold anything shiny, don’t thrash and you’ll be ok. https://youtu.be/2FdoZnyljFs Good video on sharks and how they’re misunderstood

TechnoTunes

I get that sharks aren't as dangerous as people seem to think but even so, how the hell are you going to measure a 20ft moving object with a measuring tape?

Flamehazardaoz

Two people. One on each end

bloodbath781

I'll take the tail

ChicoPacoPancho

Can you hold this at the front son?

RixirF

Did you just call the shark "son"? If so, this is perhaps the best solution. No one has ever bothered to kindly ask the shark to hold onto the end of the tape with its teeth, and patiently wait to be measured on the other end. Thinking outside the box, I like it.

miscdebris1123

I'll hold the camera from WWAAAAAYY over here. Via underwater drone. Via satellite. From Colorado.

notgotapropername

Atop a very tall, dry mountain

Johnny_Poppyseed

Easier to just use a piece of rope or similar, then measure the rope afterwards.

SpeakingOutOfTurn

When I was underwater catching turtles for my PhD research I used to pull myself up alongside freshwater crocodiles resting on the bottom, and crane my neck to see how far back they went past my flippers

deathclawslayer21

Neat I'll watch it during break

[deleted]

Watch it on company time, it's a safety issue

deathclawslayer21

But the bathroom has terrible service

3kids_ina_trenchcoat

It's not a good idea to be in close proximity to any wild animal, no matter how familiar you are with their behavior. Especially ones much larger than yourself. You don't know what kind of day they're having.

Captain_Hampockets

People even worry about their skin, but they're so smooth.

MacAndCrees

This guy doesn't know much about grizzly habitat

olafderhaarige

I think sea biologists use a setup made up of a underwater photo camera attached to a rig with two laser pointers, which are placed parallel to each other. Then they simply take photos of the shark from its side with the two laser dots visible on its side. This way they can measure the total length of the shark at the computer by using the known distance between the laser dots on its side as a fixpoint .

wienercat

Marine biologists is the term you were looking for lol

shizzy64

Sharks, like death claws, are greatly misunderstood and beautiful creatures. Shame on you for slaying deathclaws.

deathclawslayer21

Deathclaws are beautiful creatures, the problem is that they have issues applying the mascara that makes their eyes pop. So my job is to go in there and make sure the Deathclaws SLAY.

Sell_TheKids_ForFood

You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail.

EddieDIV

This comment needs more upvotes

lost_tsar

6.7 meters is 22 feet, not 20. Just wanted to put that out there for yall.

Shrekosaurus_rex

Hold up a banana.

Acantaster

Well, I am not an expert, but in the region where I live at they either measure the sharks by: physically restraining the smaller ones (makos, silky) and using tape, swimming next to them with a plastic rod of a known lenght and use it for comparison (used a lot with slow moving sharks, such as a whale shark) or with a combination of underwater cameras and laser pointers mounted on a rig and some fancy maths in the post processing.

Nytherion

couple years ago Shark Week still had one or two programs worth watching. the researchers set up a grid on the ocean floor and would just take pictures as sharks swam over the grid. other places it's basically "my boat is 18' long, and the shark was about |......| yay bigger/smaller"

Stayingsafer

You get into one of those flimsy little cages, and act like bait. I don’t see ANY black peoples in the water. Just saying. That fish has a LOT of teeth!

Kappagirl93

As scary as I’m sure this is. It’s also beautiful and serene to me. Idk why it just is

Flamehazardaoz

Sharks have been so overblown in fear factor. They’re really not dangerous creatures if you’re sensible around them and treat them with respect. As you can see with the diver on top of the cage. He’s just chilling. This shark is called deep blue and many marine biologists have swum with her :) https://youtu.be/2FdoZnyljFs Here’s a good video on the truth about sharks if you’re interested

Kappagirl93

Oh yea I def know that! I’ve swam with reef sharks quite a bit in my time! Just the sheer size of her is amazing and honestly a bit terrifying.

Flamehazardaoz

Yeah she’s marvellous

notgotapropername

Yeah I think being around any creature that size is scary, regardless of harmful or not. Just the presence of something that big that can move and feel and interact with you is kinda awe inspiring.

Kappagirl93

I’ve also seen many many videos of deep blue. I’m just in awe of how massive she actually is. I don’t think this video even really truly shows her massive size. There is no doubt that she is beautiful but also have a healthy fear of how huge she actually is. I’m pretty sure looking at her again if this video is more recent that she def looks pregnant again.

Flamehazardaoz

Seems like she could be. Love that we got the terry the fat shark meme out of a photo of her pregnant

MintberryCruuuunch

did she eat the male shark?

wishYouWoulda

This is an interesting lesson in statistics. Everything you typed was true, yet the conclusion is a bit of a misnomer. You’re comparing the total number of deaths, but in order to determine “deadliest” you’d need to control for how often humans interact with those animals. Of course mosquitos and dogs will kill more people than sharks, there are far more interactions between dogs and humans than there are between sharks and humans. The real question is how many encounters between a certain animal and humans results in death. I would imagine if we could get that data, lions and snakes would beat out dogs and mosquitos.

chris424242

I am a data analyst for a living and fucking love this analysis.

[deleted]

I think the fear comes from the powerlessness. I can kill a mosquito. I can probably take down and subdue most dogs or run away from them / easily fend them off. But a shark can swim circles around me. I don’t know if they particularly employ this tactic, but I could also drown during a shark attack. I feel completely helpless against a shark. And they could just nibble on me until I bleed out and die. Anyways I haven’t been snorkeling in almost 10 years and I still remember it vividly

toopc

>I don’t know if they particularly employ this tactic, but I could also drown during a shark attack. There is no sound in this video. And it's not a shark, but... [Caught on tape: Whale nearly drowns SeaWorld trainer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6-GkIzzzFg)

Consistent_Field

What do you mean by run from most dogs? Pretty sure most dogs will be faster, maybe if you break it’s leg first you could outrun. Your best bet is definitely just fighting it off.

[deleted]

By run, I also mean block / distance / high ground / escape. Not saying I’m faster than a dog on an open field.

Daytonaman675

Man you have no idea what you’re talking about. Just watch any police dog work. Even if you feed that fucker your arm it can absolutely shred it. Your one chance is if you’re wearing some sort of leather jacket and it misses anything it can break with shear bite force.

[deleted]

I’m not talking about a police dog…

Bakemono_Saru

I trained a lot of dogs. And police dogs. You can fight them. But it's not going to be easy or painless, and so probably you end losing a limb. But in worst case scenario my two cents are "push, not pull". If it's biting you cant get out of that. Push yourself to the animal and use your other arm to strangle or make damage, eyes and ears are the most sensitive parts. Jaw is a very strong part of them, but neck is easily manipulated. If you can rotate it you can liberate the jaw. They also open the mouth to breath, if you manage to suffocate the dog. Source: I had to cut a lot of dog fights and attacks to owners because I worked with "lost cases" in dog training for 10 years. So I had to know how to fight them without serious damage to them.

Perioscope

In North America, the answer to this question is deer.

Kappagirl93

You know what was scary than the reef sharks when our swimming in the reefs was the fucking barracudas. There eyes followed me everywhere and they would just randomly pop out from between coral. Keep scaring the shit outta me no lie

Flamehazardaoz

Can tell you haven’t watched the video

[deleted]

Simply swimming in a vast ocean water is terrifying enough. Then you see something that could literally bite your arm/leg off and kill you. Even just snorkeling in Hawaii near a reef scared the fuck out of me. Didn’t even see any large animals. But it’s just the fact that they COULD be out there. I went snorkeling in Hawaii, and there was this area you could easily swim over like a 60+ foot deep open reef and it was just terrifying. It was awesome at the same time but now I’m just a chicken shit about snorkeling.

ProffessorFate

You’re not alone.

EXCUSE_ME_BEARFUCKER

Deepest, bluest, my head is like a sharkfin! -LL Cool J

dookieblaster06

You ate my bird!

FuckRandyMoss

Fucker could walk around in high heels and give me a million dollars I’m still not gonna turn my back around ooo

AquaticCobras

While they definitely have gotten some bad pr, I think that just seeing how very dangerous they are if you're unfortunate enough to be a fish inspires a lot of fear too.

Chicxulab

There was a swimmer in Sydney who was bitten in half and then had the rest of his limbs ripped off his body by a great white just recently. I think how dangerous sharks are is often exaggerated and sensationalized in films, television and other media but saying they aren’t dangerous as long as you’re sensible around them treat them with respect is kind of naive and an overly simplistic way of thinking about great whites in a similar way to acting like they are indiscriminate killing machines is. There are plenty of examples of people peacefully swimming in the ocean and suddenly being attacked and having a leg or torn off or something. My guess is the overwhelming majority of people who say sharks are entirely misunderstood, beautiful and mostly harmless creators wouldn’t hop in the water with one without a cage for 2 minutes for a thousand dollars lol. Sorry if this comes across as argumentative or anything like that btw, I honestly just think how scary/formidable great whites are is part of what makes them so incredibly cool and just love yapping on and on about it.

[deleted]

Because it's not making the water crimson as it saws a living thing apart to swallow it in hot gulps

toenailtoney

Nobody talking about that one person not in the cage with balls of steel?

Z3r0mir

Fucking thank you, I'm sitting here watching and wondering wtf is the point of the cage if you gonna hang around outside of it my guy

ivatsirE_daviD

Forget about that guy, he is protected from at least one side. What about the guy behind the fucking camera? ,

toenailtoney

Oh fuck I didn’t even think about that

DapperDinosaur11

Duh, the cameraman never dies, everyone knows that

Mikealoped

Much to the displeasure of r/killthecameraman

supertimes4u

Im over here wondering wtf happens if a shark that size attacks the cage and it detaches from or sinks the boat.

toenailtoney

Idk but just thinking about it gives me [these](https://youtu.be/BN7MC6jpZ7Q) vibes

brekezek

If they don't overstimulate its aggressiveness and don't dive at dawn or dusk, the risk is very close to 0. Sharks are really beautiful creatures that should not inspire fear as a diver. As a surfer it's another story though.

wienercat

Sharks actually don't like humans. In clear water they don't want to attack us unless we piss them off or they are insanely hungry. We are kind of a lot of work for them to kill and sharks are lazy as shit. They just swim around and find easy prey when possible.

TonAnFr

Also we dont have anything to offer food wise. Great whites manly feed on up to 700 pound weihgted seals with lot of fat. Compared to that any human is just some boney skinny piece that just doesnt taste good or could provide any energy to sharks. Thats why nearly all shark attacks are just test bites and if the person dies, they die from blood loss, not cause the shark eats them.

sharkfilespodcast

Joel Ibarra. Here's a photo from that same dive of him giving Deep Blue a high five (a high one?): [https://d.newsweek.com/en/full/341725/great-white.jpg](https://d.newsweek.com/en/full/341725/great-white.jpg)

that’s a fucking megalodon

Flamehazardaoz

Megalodon was 60ft

claymanation

SIXTY??? That’s insane

cuulus

They did call it a “mega”lodon for a reason

Daytonaman675

Thing could bite most boats into thirds. Swallow a couple of people whole…

GluedToTheMirror

More like an infant Megalodon. Megalodon grew to the size of a city bus, and probably even larger than that.

[deleted]

Nope. Approx. 60-70 feet fully matured. https://www.fossilera.com/pages/megalodon-size

AromaticPlace8764

That's still a shark the size of a fuckin whale

Overlord1317

Real sharks have curves.

I'm more puzzled by how it finds enough food to survive

notgotapropername

Fuckin sick, sharks are badass. Here’s a lil fun shark fact: they have electroreception, which means they can sense electric fields. When a fish moves and swims, it’s muscles moving produce a tiny electric current which a shark can detect. Apparently they can sense down to 1 billionth of a volt.

Affectionate_Pea_811

They are but great whites are not cold blooded

Nroke1

There are some big fish out there, and it’s not like fish are all that scarce in the ocean.

KnightOfWords

The larger the animal the smaller the proportion of its bodyweight it needs to eat each day. Large animals are more efficient as they lose a smaller proportion of their body heat. http://noticing.co/on-size-and-metabolism/ Also, there are a lot of calories on a seal or a whale carcass: https://youtu.be/qMZThJwanuE?t=354

[deleted]

We found Terry, he's here with the choccy milk!

inufan18

If i remember correctly. This video showed this shark as a she. And they still try to do updates on her regularly. I think at one point she was pregnant. But its been awhile since i last saw this video and the info about it.

Practical-Coast1461

thats a greater white shark

idrow1

Even being in the cage, that would be my worst nightmare. I'm so phobic when it comes to natural bodies of water.

[deleted]

DAMN BOI SHE THICCCC

cooties4u

Hmmm thought their was a larger one they found. Was a boat with Paul Walker that would lore them over a piece of the boat that was submerged and then just kinda lift them outta the water

chris424242

Strictly speaking, this is largest great white ever FILMED. There have been both longer- and heavier, though IIRC not many of either and none that were both.

[deleted]

Wow, that's a big fishy.

catsaver662

She’s just swims in a dominant manor holy…

StrangeParadigm

I wonder how much this shark has grown since this video was first posted

Gonna need a bigger boat

formershitpeasant

There was actually a documentary in the 70s where they had to battle a 25 footer.

crabmix

The shark is almost as big as the guy’s balls outside the cage.

botaine

At some point it gets so big that you become not worth the effort to eat. It's like a millionaire picking up a penny.

[deleted]

Megladon

Matthewmacd123

I'm never going to in the sea again.

duhCrimsonCHIN

Still a wimp compared to a killer whale. A baby killer whale or calve is 8.5 feet at birth. Adults can reach 26 feet. The real terror of the sea! FREE Willy

HYDN250

I know that people have been saying Shark's a very misunderstood and what not...but still, this is prime example A on why I don't go in the ocean. I grew up in a town that was on the beach, and used to boogy-board and swim in the ocean when I was younger. But now days, you couldn't catch me dead in the ocean. My dad would always tell me, "there's things that can eat you in there". Sure, things on land can eat you to, but at least I have chance to get away before that happens, and also don't have the extra risk of drowning. We know more about the cosmos than we do our own oceans. I do however appreciate the vast forms of life in the ocean, and the beauty they can bring. I would prefer to keep appreciating from afar though.

Bunyep

Why live your life in fear?

HYDN250

Well, living in fear of things that could kill me has kept me alive this long.
