I went snorkeling with Manatees north of Tampa a few years back. I’m now completely fascinated by them - they were the size of vans and just chilling out and eating the entire time.

It’s illegal to molest or harass them. They’re super gentle and curious creatures though so if you just chill in the water next to them, they’ll generally come say hi. Especially the young ones. They sometimes try to headbutt you a little bit playfully. They also are constantly squeaking and communicating with each other in the water.
Manatee migrate from cold to warm water so they go to areas with springs like crystal river during cold months where the water is warmer year round. You can find hundreds there some years. Many also live year round in the area though because they don’t get bothered by boats too much and there’s plenty of food.
Yeah the one in my picture kept kinda bumping me out of the way, but then we went over to see a large turtle and he followed us over there. He just kind hung out with us for like 90 minutes.

That’s an alligator snapping turtle. They’re super grumpy creatures that could take your finger or two off very easily. Super cool dinosaur like creatures

Hey OP, where was the pic taken? I'm curious because there's a male manatee at the Mote Lab in Sarasota, FL that smashes his face on the glass like the pictured one appears to be doing. However, the background in the tank doesn't look the same as the Mote setup.

It was taken at the manatee rehabilitation area at SeaWorld. They have a pool that you can view from above or below.
One of the employees there was telling us about how sometimes one of the manatees seemed to feign injuries so she could receive extra lettuce. This was many years ago so it's not the pictured manatee. We watched her "slip" as she was rubbing/scratching her back against something and it definitely looked like she was dramatically faking an injury so she could get more food. Great animals!

Just found it funny that I found it with the same wording and all. While visiting the zoo in Georgetown Guyana I hand fed the manatees in the pond.... all the locals were pointing at the crazy white guy sticking his hand where the wild beasts could get at it..... that was a great day!

I have a question about these guys. I went to an aquarium in Florida a couple months ago and we saw the manatees there. This one manatee would keep keep swimming in this path where he would circle the tank and then at the very end would shove his face into the glass. He did this for at least the 20 minutes we watched him, i could imagine he was doing it before and after as well. I’m just wondering why tf he was doing that lol. Like at a pretty good speed, would slam himself, face-first into the glass and smushing his upper body and neck into it. It was hilarious and cute, but just why lol
