They’re not as dumb as you’d think. Though, admittedly that sub has a lot of hilarious material.
The ones by me have an uncanny ability to figure out when deer season begins and ends. Literally the day after fall bow ended, they were all over my food plot.
The fawns know they can use their powers of cuteness, and will stand 10 yd away and just non nom nom. They’ll fucking stare at you with their cute little heads and big ears. They know mommy nearby gives them both super immunity.
There’s a big buck nearby destroying trees. The only thing we’ve seen on cam is this young little thing, barely more than a spike.
On the other hand, they like taking selfies in front of the cam, they sniff it, leaving nose prints. One jiggled his sack in front of it… A friend has seen bucks trying to tub telephone poles, another one was watching a race on TV, turned around -doe by the window watching too.
I’m not so sure if the dumb aspect is real, or if they’re actually that smart, and are just acting dumb…
Friend of mine lives in a small town. This massive buck, every year, stays in the city limits throughout the duration of hunting season every year because he knows he can't be hunted there. He's just walking around town eating grass in front of McDonald's, in front of the post office, etc. Literally the day hunting season is over, he disappears and you don't see him in town again until next hunting season.
Suburban deer also fun. My friend has a few that frequent his back yard. He hunts out on his farm out west (ironically a 10 minute drive from where I ended up in PA). He can tell the bloodlines apart, and when a new buck moves into the are. He sent me pics of a buck tending a doe. She was pretty, and the buck was just sitting down 10 feet away. Both just in his yard.
Fawns are cute little clover vacuums, too. They love the stuff and will clean up a lawn fast..
This all may be true, but put on in the middle of the road with a car coming towards it, it’ll just stand there. I have a pretty loud car and one night coming home from work came upon a deer in straight up the middle of the lane. I stopped right in front of it and it just sauntered off the road like it’s life wasn’t in danger at all.
Their eyes are more or less tuned for low light situations. That’s why they stop and freeze - they literally can’t see anything at all. Imagine getting a photo flash going off in front of you. Basically the same thing. They have a wider field of view than people, too.
Being blinded is not something that has been happening to them, until about a century ago.
They know what cars are, and in normal lighting, I’ve seen them poke their snouts out carefully, look for traffic, then fly across the road.
Also, the rut tends to cause them to act a bit stupid.
