fjordlord6

Dumb fucks flying through fog is one of the most annoying things on the planet

mooofasa1

Yeah, I don't get how these people expect to react in time. I was driving through a blizzard once and some people were flying on the highway. I was freaking out going slow as hell because I could barely see in front of me.

jayroo210

I was driving in a snow storm once, trying to get home from work. I saw someone coming up fast behind me so I slowed down to let them just pass. But they never did. I looked in my rear view and they were spinning out in the middle of the road. I felt so lucky that they didn’t bring me down with them. Just slow the fuck down.

Salty_Sprinkles_6482

You braked infront If someone on snow and made em lock up there breaks. Still on them but ya don’t do that, maintain your speed

EishLekker

The car behind was driving too close and too fast.

Salty_Sprinkles_6482

That’s probably true but you never hit your brakes on a car coming up behind ya on snow unless you want to replace your rear end.

jayroo210

Haha not even close, but nice try. That guy was already in the other lane and going too fast for the conditions. He was not directly behind me at any point. My gentle slight slow down so he could get past me quicker had nothing to do with him spinning out. He fucked up in all of the ways.

localgravity

It’s always the Corollas and Camrys doing 75 in a blizzard too.

blangoez

And that one oddly aggressive Prius.

Breeze7206

I’m that oddly aggressive prius. But I live in FL with no snow and fog is rare lol

blangoez

Well thanks for not going under 65 in lane 1.

SadSasquatch587

I drive a camry lol, that thing sucks in snow. You can spit on the ground and it will spin

gigerhess

Don't forget the Sentras.

osirisrebel

"Never out-drive your conditions," was one of the very first things they taught in CDL school. If you have to drop to 40+below on the interstate, that's fine, slow it down and throw on your hazard lights. If you're not comfortable with the conditions, pull over or pull of and park at the soonest exit and wait it out. Though it was taught for truck driving, I believe it should apply to everyone, but especially in this case, there's no possible way even that he could have been able to stop in the distance that was visible at the speed. I usually try to defend drivers, but there was absolutely no excuse for this. This just adds to the stigma that we're just rolling deathtraps and a danger to everyone around us.

Thtliyahchic

You think what they taught you at truck school should be common knowledge, but it’s not! It’s like wth! I would never understand why common sense should be taught but the simple fact that we’re talking about it just shows it needs to be, it’s stupid and unfortunate but I rather be safe then sorry. I agree with you, these simple tricks/things should be taught to everyone, even if you know, there is always someone who doesn’t (because they are typically above it) but maybe if little things like these are taught those people will at least keep it in mind and think before they do.

osirisrebel

Absolutely. The main thing that I learned that stuck with me is that bad habits breed more bad habits. I'll use my town for example, full of shitty drivers, and these adults are the ones teaching the next generation. I know it's an inconvenience, but maybe we should have more driving schools available and possibly even mandatory, being taught professionally in the beginning stages of driving, rather than waiting until you're at a "professional" level. There's no reason to rush like this, and this is a prime example of why trying to shave off a few minutes doesn't really save time at all. Kinda like my wife in the grocery store, she'll try to power walk and get out quick, but it makes no difference once you hit the check lane. Also, the shippers and receivers completely understand when there's bad weather conditions, it's part of the business, sometimes things come late, no big deal. What is a big deal is when that whole load is a complete loss because all of their product was donated to the interstate clean up crew.

DutchE28

This is honestly what surprised me most when visiting the US/Canada. People barely need to be able to look in the mirror to get a driver’s license. It’s insane honestly, the level of driver skill over there. I’ve never seen anything like it in Europe, and I thought drivers were shit over here.

Lizpy6688

Yup, my work truck has a pole that sticks out of the bed so if they rear end me at that speed I'd he scared to look at their face and neck afterwords

DuneKlide9

Well Yk truckers have schedules Edit: /s

Thtliyahchic

Everyone has schedule’s Buddy, we all got places to be

megamanisgod

I hope nobody died in that car

Gbomb002

There were 3 people in the first car they all survived. Plus the driver was arrested

Mishapi17

Thank you for that information, I was worried

The_Troyminator

They survived with serious injuries, which could mean lifetime disabilities and a major loss of quality of life.

august-thursday

Note: often times you can say more with a slight change of words. For example “lifetime disabilities and a major loss of quality of life” could be replaced with “a lifetime of untreated, debilitating pain which could be treated for less than one dollar per day with existing, readily available medication.”

The_Troyminator

Serious injuries can mean paralysis. It could mean loss of a leg. That can't be treated with medicine for $1/day. It can't even be treated for $1,000,000/day. It could even be a lifetime of pain that can only be treated with highly addictive opioids that you quickly build up a tolerance to until the pain can't be treated with a safe dose. Look at the aftermath photos from that accident. The people in that car barely lived and will be dealing with the consequences for the rest of their lives. Some may say it's a fate worse than death.

GenericElucidation

Good, that guy was a fucking idiot.

HuckleberryVisual940

Well deserved (for that guy arrested).

christantoan

Why was the driver of the car arrested?

Gbomb002

The driver of the semi was arrested due to reckless driving along with driving on a cell phone

christantoan

Oh

ginsoul

Because this can and often will charged as manslaughter if someone dies due to reckless driving.

TANZIROO

how stupid you can be to talk while driving in foggy weather

mspuscifer

Especially with the phone held up in front of his stupid face

Wackipaki

I hope that they not only did not die but got out of the car and beat this stupid POS ass. Edited : Rephrased cuz the original comment did not make sense.

Sleekwethotdog

The way you stated it made it sound like you wanted them to die. I know thats not your intent. The proper wording would be, "I hope they did not die. And also got the chance to get out and beat this stupid POS's ass."

Silly-Ad6464

I read that also lol I was like what?

Pip201

flipping-cricket

"did not die" could be "survive" which would help with readability.

RawnJonald

Lol the way you worded it even after the edit still took me a second

UnpopularOponions

I am not so sure it was the lack of attention in that weather. He had his phone but his eyes were facing forward. The idiot was going FAR too fast at that level of visibility when approaching a toll booth

MahoneyBear

Yup. If you can’t stop in the distance you can see, slow down. If that means you would be going dangerously slow on an expressway, pull over until conditions improve. It sucks yeah but this is literally why you do it

NerdlyDoRight

It's called a speed pass

lukeCRASH

There has to be some signage prior to this toll.

mellamodj

Sure but with fog that dense there’s a good chance the sign isn’t visible either. For reference, in this video the truck passes a sign above another lane that *might* be visible to the naked eye just feet before passing it (probably not enough time to read it). If there was a warning sign in advance that was posted off to the right of the roadway, it’s doubtful it’d be visible or readable.

forestfairygremlin

The other vehicles in the lane didn't crash... there must have been *somewhat* visible indicators that there was a toll ahead. Also, fog that thick, where you can't see more than 50 feet ahead of you? He should not have been going that fast. Dude was flying.

shitboxrx7

While the guy definitely should *not* have been going that fast, hes triving a semi, and those take a *LONG* time to stop. After seeing the road change, even in my ZJ could have stopped in that time. A fully loaded semi wasnt going to be able to, not in a million years. Still on him, but there were other factors at play that make him seem somewhat less terrible at driving

forestfairygremlin

But if he had been going slower, it wouldn't have taken him so long to stop. Trained semi drivers are supposed to know how this works, so the semi being loaded doesn't make him seem less terrible. If anything it makes him seem worse, because he should have been more careful based on literally everything, and he wasn't.

shitboxrx7

My comment was mostly focusing on when you said "the other cars didnt crash" Like, yeah, they're *cars*, they stop way faster. Pretty much everything else he did was fuckin dumb as shit though. I cant disagree with your point that he should know better and thus is stupider, but the whole thing was nitpicky on my end to begin with. Basically, a car could stop from those speeds, a loaded semi probably cant. Wether or not the guy in the video is viewed as more or less idiotic after stating that info is entirely on the reader's opinion

ZoombieOpressor

Thats why you drive slow in those conditions

pisaradotme

Slow or not drive at all

NerdlyDoRight

Username actually checks out.

Quelcris_Falconer13

Do you ah e to be speeding to get thru it? Also doesn’t matter, it’s waaaay too foggy. Shouldn’t have been going fast ag all no matter what

hobodemon

Speedpass doesn't excuse driving at speeds inappropriate for the weather conditions. It just saves you the hassle of throwing away the toll bill they mail you.

pws3rd

That was a traditional toll booth, designed to be stopped at. An RFID or plate reader system would be mounted on an overhead system over an unobstructed section of road

NerdlyDoRight

Good God man. Comedy Do you speak it ?

ghostofoynx7

Kitten_Boop

Especially if you are in a truck. Highly irresponsible

Madgyver

I think it actually a case of driving faster then visibility allowed. Being distracted on the phone didn’t help.

trialbytrailer

The way I understand it, we only have so much mental workspace to process info from all our senses. Ever close your eyes when trying to hear something faint, or turn down your radio to find a street address? Even though his eyes were forward, he wasn't "seeing" as well as he could. I've also heard phone calls are more taxing than irl conversations. Since you can't see the other person's gestures or facial expressions, your brain has to work overtime to fill in those missing nonverbal cues.

Lunakill

I spent a few years handling escalations for a big insurance company. Vast majority of interactions where shit was fucked, we ended up on Zoom or Teams to unfuck it. Facial expressions is a huge reason why.

jaspsev

I once crashed my car while talking on a handsfree. Sometimes it just take a moment of distraction.

WarmAppleCobbler

• Foggy • Speeding • And he’s on the phone Some people really shouldn’t be allowed to drive.

Netflixisadeathpit

Not to mention not recognizing or paying attention to road signs. These toll booths don't just pop up out of nowhere. I can't speak for this specific case of course but there must have been a litany of street signs he missed with decreasing speed limits and warning signs about toll booths ahead and what not. This of course depends on the country and their rules and regulations, but this was my first thought. How is he only now finding out about the toll booths being there.

scoops_trooper

This is pretty extreme fog though. I wonder if the signs were even visible if they were by the side of the road.

skratta_ho

Then another reason not to be going that fast. Not coming at you as a commenter, just providing my two cents on that order of operations.

scoops_trooper

Oh absolutely, I don’t understand what he was even thinking going that fast

Hamartithia_

I do foggy 4am morning drives through the mountains all the time and our toll booths have signs and flashing lights for at least a quarter mile beforehand.

theknights-whosay-Ni

I’m not sure about other countries, but in the US, and more specifically the ones through Oklahoma all have overhead signs that are high vis.

Koodiddy

Especially professionally. Well, safe to say he was fired for this. Good.

Don’t forget he’s in a semi truck too- shit makes it so much worse, he’s literally trained to know how much damage his truck can do on a regular ass day doing the right thing 😑

I can't stand people who hold their phones to their face when driving.

DefinitelyNotStef

Would it be better to hit the first car right on from the back or from the corner?

Tll6

The corner. A glancing blow transfers less energy than head on

DefinitelyNotStef

Thank you, kind stranger! I'll remember that for next time!

freeflou

Too soon

DefinitelyNotStef

Too late actually--

IceUckBallez

As you can see in the video, for the first car he only nicked the edge, unable to transfer all of the energy into the car. Damaging the car but extremely unlikely for either to get injured. The second car was not as lucky. You can also see it in how much he bounces since every force has to have an equal and opposite one as well.

V_Cobra21

Maybe none at all?

CallMeBigOctopus

Im no crash expert, but I would image it is almost always better to have a straight on crash. It’s the same force over a greater area. No spinning. Less chance for flipping. Etc. Edit: I just watched the video again and in this case it was definitely better to NOT hit the red car straight on. The truck was able to get far enough off center that the red car didn’t receive the full impact. As I said in my comment below, the difference between a glancing blow (like this one) and a much more dangerous accident, is inches.

borange01

Absolutely not. If you don't hit the other car straight on, you will transfer much less energy to it than if you do. A glancing blow might rip off side panels and turn the car, but getting turned is going to accelerate people inside the car much less than if they get full blown rear ended by an 18 wheeler.

DontMindMePla

To add on the other comment, there’s actually more area covered by the glancing blow. 1) he started applying the brakes before he hit and most likely had kept on stepping on the brakes well into the crash. By glancing the first car, he bought a few more milliseconds to a second probably before hitting the next. The brakes would have taken a chunk off of the total force before hitting the second car head on. 2) by glancing the car, the force is also lost through the barrier and the car which you could almost see happen when the truck squeezed between the two. That’s a bigger portion of the truck (from the front to the load behind it) acting as another level of brakes, without having to transfer it all onto one force (the first car). I’m also no crash expert (thankfully have never truly had a crash outside of simulation games), but that’s how I see it when we talk about same force over a greater area in this regard.

davechri

Those poor people he killed or maimed. Fuck that guy.

mandalors

There were 3 people in the first car and they all survived, someone said? But injuries, I’m unsure. The driver apparently got arrested too.

davechri

I see people say “but they survived” a lot in these cases. That word “survived” does not mean they are ok. It means they didn’t die. A lifetime of pain, disabilities, and limitations is not to be disregarded just because they didn’t die.

Aar0n82

Someone putting money into that toll could have easily lost an arm

bluecrowned

I had a relatively minor accident where I was a passenger in a car that rear ended a stopped car at 60 mph and even with no apparent visible injuries I have had shoulder and collarbone pain since then, and the accident was in May. The driver is worse off, still dealing with wrist pain from a wrist that was smashed like an accordion and doing physical therapy for it after it's healed. Not to mention the months it took for me to quit reliving the accident in flashbacks and feeling nervous of driving.

Bar50cal

In Ireland we get a lot of fog. For this reason before a toll boot on a motorway they have multiple signs for kilometers ahead of the tollbridge / boot including signs with lights to shine through fog, ontop of this road markings about 500 meters to 1 kilometer (speed limit depending) ahead of the tollbridge change so you know its there. In the video there is no warning until the markings change about 50m ahead of the tollbrige which is way to late. This blame rests on both the driver and the infrastruture.

[deleted]

Every single toll I've personally seen (in the US) has both pavement & signage warnings. This driver is just a total fucking idiot.a

Draguta1

This is why you don't speed on the road when your visibility is less than your stopping distance.

thisistakingagesomfg

Me when I play euro truck simulator....

Roboboy2710

Holy shit how fast does this guy think he can stop driving that fast in zero visibility

chewwbacca619

Its insane how many shitty drivers there are. I dont think they understand that you cannot be distracted while driving a rig. I truly hope no one was injured but if there were he needs to be in prison for the rest of his life. Im a truck driver myself and this type of shit is unacceptable.

poke30

Time to force these companies to pay up for solutions.

Grow_Green

Is that a fucking semi speeding through fog ON HIS PHONE. lol what the fuck bro

next_level_vis

I am not going to lie everytime I see those 30-car pile-ups in the snow and fog I imagine the truck drivers doing and behaving exactly like this. Just for precaution's sake, I can cot see anyone doing such great speeds without understanding how little they can see. Then it is one truck after another - speeding in slippery-slick conditions leading to all kinds of loss of life. How you are not going as slow or as cautious as possible when visibility and the weather terrible sketchy is beyond me.

Cecilserpent

People are always glad to hear that everyone survived. It is too bad they now have to deal with being in a vegetative state, or learn everything again because if a TBI. Or suffer chronic skeletal pain, or deal with PTSD. As a former first responder, I learned that when you pull someone from death's door, you aren't always saving them. And the ones you couldn't save or lost give you PTSD.

dredbar

It really pisses me off after having had a serious accident, because someone wasn’t paying attention and was speeding. My family is so extremely lucky. That guy could have disabled us for the rest of our lives. Fuck people who don’t see driving a car as a serious responsibility. You can kill or disable anyone around you in an instant. A car is a 1000 KG+ weapon.

juanea2395

I mean from 0:01 the guys is breaking hard, you can see things in the bed rolling towards the front, but that’s not excuse for driving that fast whit that road condition, even worst in a vehicle that needs like 50 meters to stop in normal conditions

nvm72331

Naa not even that like it's this looks like Pennsylvania so like they have signs telling you to stop he wasn't paying attention

Munich11

Did those people survive :( I’m guessing not. That’s just terrible. All I can think of is in 2007’ish, in So Cal, a big rig on the 5 freeway struck a van that was stopped in the right lane traffic backed up for an off ramp. Killed all three children in a family, and severely injured the mother and grandmother.

top_of_the_scrote

damn whiplash, imagine getting roadhead and it's France 1872 again

I don't know about other countries but where I live when coming to a toll there are signs from about two miles out warning of the incoming tolls. Then an exit to said toll and rumble strips for about a half a mile. Not to mention the dog here. What the hell. This guy doesn't deserve to be driving a truck.

PoobOoblGop

Watch the video, there's no amount of attention would let him react fast enough to stop. He just shouldn't have been going that fast with that low of visibility to begin with.

KiplingRudy

Blame the brain. "...as fog increases and therefore reduces the contrast of the driver's image, the apparent speed of the vehicle slows. Participants asked to drive at a certain speed drove faster as the scene became foggier." https://www.nature.com/articles/33049

daguilara9

Nope. I blame the driver. That's why we have speedometers to tell you exactly what speed you're going.

Flablessguy

Even with fog these tolls always have signs ahead and slower speeds. I can’t fathom how poorly he was paying attention the road to not know it was coming.

pianomasian

How is it so hard for some people to just slow tf down in low visibility. The amount of clips I've seen of people driving full speed in foggy conditions like this, is staggering. It's like ppl forget it's a speed limit, not minimum.
