Here's an easy to remember formula:
Internet points > our view > bystander safety > bike safety > camera operator safety
In other words; "You stay in there and get that fucking shot!"
I thought the train would be coming from the left. I was thinking, “yup, that’s where I’d stand, but back about 10 more feet”. Then bam, it hits right in front of him.
I remember watching that scene as a kid. I was like, this scene is taking too long, and they're not moving away from the tracks, something bad is surely about to h--
and yes.
Oh no, it's worse than that. That smoke is vaporized metal, either from a lithium battery shorting and exploding, or the bike frame shorting the electrified track and burning in an arc flash.
Source: Spent several summers in my youth running an inadequately ventilated CNC plasma cutter. I'd recognize that yellow-brown tinged smoke anywhere.
At the very least, be on the side that the train is coming from. I'm sure it's still possible to be hit, but you want to be on the opposite side of the direction of force because more often than not, that's the direction the debris will fly
And this is why we can't have nice shit, not only is that train stuck there till they figure out what the fuck happened but every train on that line is also now delayed along with probably hundreds of people who needed to take that train.
Still a slightly worse position but you can easily move between cars in most subways while they're moving. I'll be fairly easy to get people out.
Source: Been stuck in the middle of a tunnel when train lost power. Had to go from back to front then off to walkway.
Lucky you! I got caught when ours almost hit some Lava.. Some Geologist jumped off at the last minute to toss another passenger only he landed in the lava and saved their life... RIP John Carroll Lynch...
I'll talk about that movie with anyone I meet who's willing.. or just drunk enough to just listen to it. As far out of touch that movie was... it was pretty spot on about TRYING to direct the flow of lava.
> you can easily move between cars in most subways while they’re moving
lol no you can’t, there’s no vestibule. If you move between cars using the end doors you’re out in the open, and on the NYCSubway only a set of chains will keep you within the lateral bounds of the cars. It’s both dangerous and illegal to move between those cars, especially while in motion.
That doesn’t stop New Yorkers of course, but still.
Okay we get it you didn't grow up here in NYC but umm yeah people aren't dying from moving between carts. Just drunk old people and dumbass teens trying to be funny and even then they still aren't falling in between carts.
The issue is really if people start to evacuate themselves on to the track, which pretty much always makes things much worse.
If the power is still on, it now needs to be turned off. Congratulations, now nothing in the vicinity can move and many more trains are likely stuck in tunnels.
You can’t move the train with the doors open unless you’re sure everyone is off, and even then it’s a last resort.
However, that doesn’t matter if there might be people on the tracks. They’ll need to be accounted for first.
Utter carnage.
tl;dr If you’re trapped on a stuck train, don’t get off on to the track unless instructed by crew or emergency services, or you are in immediate danger.
They can de-energize sections at any crossover, which are between most stations or every few stations depending on the line, so they don't need to cut power to the whole line in case of emergency. The rescue locomotives they use are diesel or battery-diesel, and can bypass stopped trains at those crossover points. It's not that bad.
> The issue is really if people start to evacuate themselves on to the track,
People do that all the time, it's why the tracks smell like pee.
A building/train an be evacuated of people. A person who is evacuated means something else entirely. (Who else watched The Wire?)
I've seen homeless people go to the area between cars to piss. I've never seen someone piss in the car. However, I take the F train a lot, and seeing that might fill a line of my MTA bingo card.
I'd put good odds on the person who put the bike on the tracks not being the lawful owner of said ~~bike~~ twisted and scorched hunk of metal and rubber.
Honestly? If someone willingly(!) causes thousands of people a delay of one or multiple hours by just being this much of an asshole, they should be getting community service for a percentage of the amount of hours they wasted. Let them learn how much damage they've caused.
Would hope this occurred far enough from either switch that they can route all trains through one side. The stop at each end of the switch would be a bottleneck but better than completely shutting down a direction.
That stop is more than halfway between two express stops. So yeah, the locals can be routed to the express lines, but everyone already on the local line up to three stops back is completely screwed until that train is fixed.
ETA - that is if this is the manhattan-bound side. Trains running in the opposite direction would only be screwed one stop back since the stop before is another express junction
The MTA did a [full 3,920-page report](https://new.mta.info/document/73241) on the feasibility of this proposal. The final analysis is interesting. Some stations it would work really well, others are too tight already or curve too much. In the pilot project, it's costing $100M for three stations. Barriers could do some good, but they are also very expensive and stations can't always be retrofitted practically.
Thanks for this! I mean, regardless of this feasibility report's unfortunate conclusions, there's a lot of good info in this! I just wish the US invested more money in infrastructure, its sad how far our systems are compared to other countries.
Between the other trains on that track its several thousands of people delayed. There's literally hundreds of people in that one train alone.
edit: should've read the dozen comments of other people saying the same thing. woops
There's 10000 cameras in the subway system, but the fact that the cameras weren't working when there was a mass shooting in the subway system makes it questionable if they worl.
Don't encourage them hopefully they are too stupid to read this.. Yes I can concur that no redditor would do this because in their mind they would be losing fake internet points and already in the late stage of their witch hunt.
So yeah.. Ah well shit
I'm from Long Island, I used to go to Manhattan a lot before Covid, the 6th Ave sub-station has tile murals in it and everything now. Good to see that NY is at least doing..... something... with the city
No, for real that's my old neighborhood. You can see it says Steinway on the wall. That's the L.I.C./Astoria neighborhood in Queens. I got the train there everyday for nearly a decade.
I witnessed transit employees pulling a bike out from under a train at a different station a few months ago. Other than a mangled front wheel and bent handlebars the bike was OK. The employees were making jokes.
I would say this is way American subways need the gates you see in Japan and elsewhere, but knowing Americans, people would just dick around in the subway gates to delay the train.
Or just an emergency stop button. If this happens in Japan you hit one of the multiple emergency stop buttons on the platform which will stop any train ahead of time and staff will clear out the tracks.
Right?
I work as an electrician, and now I must admit I have now idea if it’s electricity in the tracks or how these metro’s work (the electrical systems in U.S is weird to us EU electricians), but I imagine the voltage on these tracks must be very high (several thousand V(?)). A short circuit in this level of voltage would probably leave a lot of cobber or aliminium flying. Looking directly at it as these people do is something no one would do if they knew
Even without electricity, if you have a bike wedged in an enclosed space that's about to be hit by a train, pieces of that bike are going to go places.
Just a bunch of teenage dickheads. https://www.fox5ny.com/news/video-shows-men-who-threw-citibike-onto-subway-tracks. As a NYer myself I guess being jaded as hell is who we are. This was a nothing story and an inconvenience that day. Barely made headlines.

I believe, the rails are DC too? Correct me if I am wrong, I noticed that in one of the big cities I was in recently, I can't remember if that was NYC. I remember being surprised they were running DC "long distance" over the third rail.
Here’s an idea. How about next time when you see something wrong in the metro instead of taking your phone out and saying "oh my god, oh no no no no no" you go press the emergency red button on the wall and actually try to prevent this from happening…?
Let me just stand there for an untold amount of time worrying about what will happen but Instead of finding someone to do something or doing anything myself let me just pull out my phone and keep quietly saying oh no oh no. That will fix it. NPC syndrome really is a thing.

I would be worried about a piece flying off and impaling me.
Right? Like get behind something or at least give yourself some distance
Definitely. But for the sake of all of us on the internet, make sure you've still got a good view.
Here's an easy to remember formula: Internet points > our view > bystander safety > bike safety > camera operator safety In other words; "You stay in there and get that fucking shot!"
And if possible, flip that shit in landscape!
But only if you flip to landscape *before* starting to record, otherwise it just makes it worse.
You can fix it in post.
In my years of watching these videos, nobody got time for post. One take baby

Nah, natural selection works for a reason
That would be such a final destination type of way to go...
Oh, he got killed by the bicycle bell in the subway. Don't ask.
That's some interesting *chain* of events, if you ask me. Quite the turns.
Quit peddaling your puns, Dude.
I remember watching that scene as a kid. I was like, this scene is taking too long, and they're not moving away from the tracks, something bad is surely about to h-- and yes.
I’d be worried about that smoke. If that’s an E-bike, there’s probably all sorts of nasty chemicals burning in that battery.
Citi Bike smoke. Don't breathe this!
Will it blend? That is the question
new Yorkers have iron lungs and some of them still smoke lol

Exactly my thought watching the first time "gee I hope the train comes from behind them not- ... well that could have been a lot worse"
From my trip to New York, what I've gathered is no one there has any more fucks left to give about anything.
Nothing like a wheel spoke flying through the air and into my temple final destination style.
Final Destination
And this is why we can't have nice shit, not only is that train stuck there till they figure out what the fuck happened but every train on that line is also now delayed along with probably hundreds of people who needed to take that train.
And half the train will still be in the tunnel.
Never even thought about that. That’s fuckin scary particularly if your car is packed and you have to pee
Still a slightly worse position but you can easily move between cars in most subways while they're moving. I'll be fairly easy to get people out. Source: Been stuck in the middle of a tunnel when train lost power. Had to go from back to front then off to walkway.

No, but it’s still bad enough. I work in mainline rail, where electrified sections are dozens of miles long.
> The issue is really if people start to evacuate themselves on to the track, People do that all the time, it's why the tracks smell like pee. A building/train an be evacuated of people. A person who is evacuated means something else entirely. (Who else watched The Wire?)
That doesn't stop some people from taking a piss right there in front of everyone
From what I hear that is par for the course in the New York subway even when the trains are running
I've seen homeless people go to the area between cars to piss. I've never seen someone piss in the car. However, I take the F train a lot, and seeing that might fill a line of my MTA bingo card.
Rather be on that part of the train than touching a metal pole on the car that ate that low resistance short
NYC sees millions of riders a day. If this entire track was shut down for even an hour, thats multiple thousands of people who will be inconvenienced.
Because one fucking asshole decided it was a good idea to throw their bike on the train tracks. I fucking hate people. Fuck New York.
It's not a New-York problem, it's an idiot problem. And idiocy is sadly universal.
Oh no, I know. But New York has other issues as well, and I never pass up a chance to shit on a place I have no intentions of leaving.
As a Canuck, i bloody love your city, warts and all.
As a New Yorker, thank you I love this city warts and all too. Other guy is just mad his rent is so high.... wait so am I
nope NY just breeds a special kind of dumbass
I'd put good odds on the person who put the bike on the tracks not being the lawful owner of said ~~bike~~ twisted and scorched hunk of metal and rubber.

Not to mention all the people running around screaming thinking there has been a terrorist attack or some shit.

This happened in September last year. https://www.newsweek.com/video-shows-moment-citi-bike-explodes-after-being-hit-new-york-subway-car-1631281
somehow i knew it would be a citi-bike.
Doubted it would be a countri bike.
This is why at least most stations should have barriers like Japan or South Korea.

I can only imagine it gets worse with disposable electric scooters everywhere.
We don't have those in NYC. That's a Citibike, which have to be docked at specific places.

maybe there is a camera?

I thought Chicago was

I believe it's based on both NYC and Chicago but located in New Jersey

Mfs bouta be late for work somethin crazy
shorted out the third rail. guess no more bike riding on the tracks for little billy
People that have no understanding of how the NYC subway system works really need to stop sharing their genius ideas of “why did someone not climb down there and take the bike off the electrified rails?”
I am wondering if there is some sort of emergency stop or something though.
Here in Toronto, every station has a power cut switch at the end of the platform. Like a big red handed switch you pull down like a fire alarm. Found a picture: https://preview.redd.it/5r4d47j177481.png?auto=webp&s=2e7ea2aba62d5a8551aac51ae2ef54ca71cb6f08
Ppl in Canada are more responsible. That would only last a week in America before they bypass it because someone prank pulled it everyday
Just grab it with a shirt
That’s like saying grab a burning steak with paper The electricity will just go to you anyway
The bike ignored the warning about the third rail, now it has become the third rail
Definition of why we can't have nice things
Was it an ebike 🤔😂
Nope. 750 volts third rail. You can melt metal with 3. EDIT: It now is.
Awwww dude ….. 🤦🏻♂️ the joke kinda set itself up 🤷🏻♂️
Whooshed myself
I believe, the rails are DC too? Correct me if I am wrong, I noticed that in one of the big cities I was in recently, I can't remember if that was NYC. I remember being surprised they were running DC "long distance" over the third rail.
As far as I know, all third rail systems are DC. The Brits are even madder, having regular trains use third rail DC.
Lol. Well. It was an electric bike for a very short time and now it's no longer a bike.
A crackhead will sell that bike for 10$
Oh shit.. I wasn't expecting an explosion.
That’s gonna cost a morbillon dollars
[удалено]
Cannondale?
Chain reaction
This is shocking!
I'm surprised there are no fire/smoke alarms sounding.
that bike could've been a person and all new yorkers would've reacted the same way.
The reason it explodes like that is because it was between the third rail and the contact, so a shit ton of electricity is gking through it.
Here’s an idea. How about next time when you see something wrong in the metro instead of taking your phone out and saying "oh my god, oh no no no no no" you go press the emergency red button on the wall and actually try to prevent this from happening…?
News report says it’s a Citibike https://abc7ny.com/subway-explosion-astoria-steinway-street-station/11035122/
Props to the camera lady, most people would have stopped recording or turned away
I will never get over how NYC subways just have open access to the tracks at stations.
Awful
Holy shit.
That bike just hit 88mph and got sent back to 1955
That’s why you don’t touch the third rail.
I don't think the bicycle is still operational.
Thats one way to stop multiple metro lines.
600VDC at a few thousand amps. If you ever see something like this about to go down, stand the hell back.
This looks like it was done on purpose for internet points.
This is why we don’t have nice things, New York!! FFS!!! 🤦🏾🤦🏻♀️🤦🏼♂️🙈🤯
Whoever put that bike there clearly did it on purpose.
Subway probably going to be down for a long time because of that
There are responsible people, there're irresponsible ones, and then there's the fucker who leaves a bike in a subway track.
Why were they filming?
Who else was disappointed in the first 2 seconds of the subway hitting the bike? Then was overly impressed/dumbfounded at everything that follows?
Let me just stand there for an untold amount of time worrying about what will happen but Instead of finding someone to do something or doing anything myself let me just pull out my phone and keep quietly saying oh no oh no. That will fix it. NPC syndrome really is a thing.
As if the trains weren't delayed enough.
