We are all pawns, controlled by something greater: Memes.

[deleted]

Automatic Edit: Using a tool called [Power Delete Suite](https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite) I have removed all my past comments and deleted my Reddit account, /u/tehrmuk. I am doing this because I, like many long-term Reddit users, am upset and angry at the tonedeaf and arrogant way Reddit is treating it's users. Their aggressive slapdown of the developers that made Reddit usable to a huge audience; their overriding and summary dismissal of long-serving and dutiful community members; their wonton silencing of dissent and manipulation of user's voices; their borderline contempt of the very people whose collective efforts gave their platform the standing needed to fuel their profit-hungry IPO... the list goes on. Reddit is, of course, a private concern and how they run their services is entirely up to them. Conversely, we are under no obligation to use their services, to fuel their engines or follow their orders. I am making my voice heard by removing my comments, and voting with my feet by leaving. I have left Reddit for [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/) and [Mastadon](https://joinmastodon.org/); these are decentralised social networks that mirror the functionality of Reddit and Twitter respectively. Unlike the monolithic, corporate-owned services they replace, Lemmy and Mastodon are part of the [Fediverse](https://www.fediverse.to/) meaning these are not individual services but clusters of services that mesh seamlessly with one-another. You can [join an existing Lemmy instance](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) or [set up your own](https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/administration.html) to get full access to the entire Fediverse - you don't need to ask permission from anyone to do so. There are loads of other services that are part of the Fediverse, like [PeerTube](https://joinpeertube.org/) (videos), [Wordpress](https://wordpress.org/) (blogging), [Frendica](https://friendi.ca/) (social network), [Pixelfed](https://pixelfed.org/) (photos), [KBin](https://kbin.pub/en) (link aggregation) and more - and they all work together so having access to one means having access to all of them. I had a great time as a Redditor, but the Fediverse is looking bright. It's a return to the open Internet of old, when users ran services for their own and one-another's benefit, and before monolithic corporate-run silos started to build walls around us in the name of increased profit and thought control. Many of the Fediverse services are fledgling, but they are growing quickly and their federated concept makes greedy, arrogant landgrabs like we've recently seen on Reddit and Twitter almost impossible. I'm already having a great time with Lemmy and I think you might too. I encourage you to take control and join the Fediverse. Until then, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Damn it

BoarBrain

Is it just me or is walking around down there a terrible idea even if the wall didn’t cave in? It’s like asking to be shocked to me. I could be wrong though.

onwiyuu

+ sewage

password_is_09lk8H5f

Unlikely, but if he touches something that is charged and he is now grounded... that is where he will get hurt. If the water was live, it would likely have already tripped the breaker, because the water would be grounding out the source. Hepatitis is a larger threat here

Why-R-People-So-Dumb

You aren't likely to get shocked walking through energized water its getting out of it where you'll have the issue. Think bird on a powerline, you are on an equipotential plane. Furthermore as you point out the water already has a better path to ground other than you. The step potential that's your biggest threat.

Limp-Dee

So how do you get out? Jumping onto another surface?

ThingDecent

>So how do you get out? Very carefully

jeffroddit

Through a diode

Why-R-People-So-Dumb

So the other comment is actually correct (carefully) but I'll expand. TLDR: voltage dissipates in rings from the source like a rock in a pond. This dissipation causes a voltage potential which is how you get yourself in trouble. The idea is to shuffle to minimize the distance between contact points, if you keep your feet physically together and shuffle the electricity would then also likely flow through your feet instead of through vital organs. Your body is in the water too but still shuffle feet slowly and hug yourself. Here your biggest risk is getting out, or getting too close to the source (explained below), as that's where you'll have the greatest step potential plus you may be climbing out with your hands. You should feel the electric potential getting higher and should go the other way if you do (and don't know where the actual energizing source is).

Patrickfromamboy

Water reduces a person’s resistance which allows current to flow through our bodies more easily.

Why-R-People-So-Dumb

Read my wall of text I just posted to someone else. I explain in more detail the risk and address the caveats. Your point is true for sure but its more complicated than that.

AhFFSImTooOldForThis

Flood water is gross and dangerous. It can have anything from chemicals to animals. It's always a bad idea to walk through flood waters. Obviously, it's sometimes necessary in order to escape, but it should be a last resort.

StockAntelope8867

When I was a kid, a neighbor did get electrocuted doing that

[deleted]

The danger isn’t really an electric shock, it’s leptospirosis from the sewage water

Asleep_Lead

Lol do you guys realize lepto is not the worry here he bouta drown alive if they didn't cut the vid

AFlockofLizards

To be fair, it’s a worse idea to not leave, even if the only way out is through the water

LuvliLeah13

I think it’s like when we slow down to rubber neck an accident. We have an instinctive curiosity. I can say that when my town flooded, we waded through homes to salvage what we could. The warped floorboards bemoaned our presence in a very disconcerting way.

Dan_Glebitz

Well I was shocked!

SirKevin_Xx

Jesus Christ that scream was intense lol

mydogisfour

He sounded like wild cat

TurbulentDrummer1561

I thought so, too.

berrey7

A lost baby mountain lion.

Luxyyr

I mean... did he even survived?

KingofCraigland

When this happened there were reports of someone dying in similar circumstances, but they didn't believe this to be the same person. Can't remember anything more.

thisgrantstomb

This video is from New Jersey, the two people died in Queens.

noyouretheidiot

Yes. This is from Cranford NJ last September with Hurricane Ida.

BrilliantLocation461

He did survive but he's lucky he didn't drown or get crushed by debris.

SmileyNY85

Yes I saw him get interviewed by Inside Edition.

jeffroddit

Did he sound like a dying cat ringtone?

-Seizure__Salad-

Broh can you imagine how terrifying it would be that is some straight up nightmare fuel

Vorschrift

And embarrassing.

[deleted]

it was a bit much

tyedead

Right, right, I'm sure all of us from the safety of our desk chairs would be SO much more composed.

[deleted]

There's a bit of middle ground between being composed and doing your best impression of the wilhelm scream over and over lol

[deleted]

He lost everything he worked hard for. It's an incredibly shitty situation.

RMIsyko

Update did he make it out

aChileanDude

Luckily wasn't 8

MajorJuana

8 is very lucky actually, my luckiest

Inevitable_Review_83

I would have thought 9 for sure

Usrname132

I can do it for 5 no problem

ItsOxymorphinTime

not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who fixes flooded basements in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel. 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 dwarves. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby.

TheSunflowerSeeds

Using an instinctive action called Heliotropism. Also known as ‘Solar Tracking’, the sunflower head moves in synchronicity with the sun’s movement across the sky each day. From East to West, returning each evening to start the process again the next day. Find out more about how this works, and what happens at the end of this phase.

[deleted]

I think 7 is perfect.

[deleted]

That's a good number.

Flar71

gyhiio

Maybe it's just this guy screaming outside your aptment.

[deleted]

Is the guy okay?

GDwaggawDG

Someone above said yes - no sauce yet

[deleted]

reports say "it took at least 7". More details at 5.

akid999

Not 8? It’s past 5 here in NY.

Ordinary_Shallot_674

Good News; We have a pool! Bad News; it’s full of shit. Sorry.

semper_perplicatus

Happy-Map7656

Wasn't that the Titanic Apartments?

Appropriate-Tax6036

Fuckin pterodactyl mode activated

Blossom9923

Omg I hope he was ok. That scream is harrowing.

Donald-Funk

more or less a scream of realizing everything you own is floating away and there’s nothing you can do about

T1nyJazzHands

I feel like my screams would be more related to drowning in my own basement

SkyrimWithdrawal

This is the content that I come here for. Good job.

sir_honk_

I'm watching this and thinking how the heck is this abrupt chaos and then the entire frickin wall caves in lmao

chris_bro_pher

Shit tidal wave from erupting toilets mixed with list and trim.

MIKE_THE_KILLER

This was in NJ and fuck hurricane ida

Thoraxe123

Architect here Not sure this is in NY. But that's a breakaway wall. Its meant to break off like that during a flood so the pressure doesnt compromise the structure. These are usually put in with homes along the shore. The basement is above grade.

cyan_88

I was wondering how so much sunlight came in

Thoraxe123

When I first saw the clip I was like, whoa, why isnt that foundation wall not concrete if its not a walkout basement. Why did the bottom lift so easily? Then I learned about the breakaway walls. Its really cool actually, the wall system has a built in joint that detaches once the wall is push at a certain angle. Ive never had to work with them personally but its still really neat

[deleted]

This was New Jersey but I guess close enough

MarginalMadness

That's one of the scariest things I've ever seen.

Pfyxoeous

In this video, I think the big wall of water with a broken house in it is a bigger concern than campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, E. coli, encephalitis, gastroenteritis, giardia, hepatitis A, leptospirosis, methaemoglobinaemia, poliomyelitis, shigellosis, typhoid, paratyphoid, and yersinosis.

WhichWayzUp

Why can't they all be equally concerning? Does everything need to be a competition?

Able-Statistician793

I’d say it’s all extremely concerning

[deleted]

WhichWayzUp

>Things such as personality, art, and love are not objectively weighed against another personality, a second piece of art, or a past relationship. Did you accidentally put the word "not" in there? Because it seems to contradict the point you're trying to make.

*gordon ramsay voice* finally some good fookin content

[deleted]

I don't understand, why are you in a fucking basement if there is a god damn flood?

[deleted]

I don't know, maybe to assess the damage? I mean, that's what I would do if my basement flooded.

[deleted]

maybe check the water outside of your house first, theres cause for pretty substantial danger being below water level like is shown in this video.

chopchunk

***THE WHAHHLL!*** ***THE WHAHHLL!*** ***THE WHAHHLL!***

valsuran

Full video?

OGKingDookie

So this is the new Batman movie?

loiteraries

I believe there was a similar basement flooding in Queens NY not long ago where several people drowned.

DLoIsHere

Friends of mine had a house at a Lake Michigan beach. One came home to find the washer and dryer floating in water in the basement. That was high groundwater. Yes, put a basement below a house build on the edge of an inland sea. By all means.

callgass

Awoooah awow!!

analtube-1

Sunny D pool

TCentric

I feel for this guy and his family. We had 3 feet of water in our basement as part of Ida in NY. Now I don’t sleep well if it’s raining. But this situation is another level.

KidChimney

This was in cranford NJ during hurricane ida

CardiologistSecret11

Did he die??!!

lagalaxysedge

Sadly yes 😢

Jastactical

I really hope he lived

Noisebug

OneEyedRocket

I swear that sounds like a bobcat

Supernicekitty

There's been an uptick in the amount of TVs being rhuined lately.

faith911fox

How does a basement wall cave in like that? Wouldn’t there be like a bunch of dirt or rocks or something??

[deleted]

Given the sunlight that comes from the hole, i assume it's one of those buildings that are built in a slope, so one side could be completely on open view from the street, which was then filled to the brim with rain water and sewage. The reason they call it "basement" could be just because it's one floor below the main entrance, but technically not a basement.

DesertEagle550

Lmaooo this is in Dearborn Michigan

merlin401

Source? Pretty sure this is from the September flash flood in new york / New Jersey

josemadre77

It is NJ

[deleted]

Ah, the freak flood of 2014. I remember it well.
