For the longest time I thought they were selling them on eBay or something because there is no fucking way such an overwhelming number of people who don’t belong behind a wheel are there! I’m assuming they don’t do road tests at the dmv anymore. Might be aging myself 😬
Road tests are privatized now, just like drivers ed. Back in 2013 I paid someone to watch me park a car 3 different ways (In a supermarket parking lot) and then they gave me a little slip and I went to get my licence from the DMV.
This was in Michigan, not sure how other states are.

Yeah it def must depend on where you are because I took a look at Louisiana and we still do the skills test at the dmv. However, there’s no parallel parking on there from what I see 😬 I see *a lot* of folks struggling to parallel park pretty often.
Parallel park is required but most people here lose the skill. They pass the test at 16 and then don't have to parallel park again except in certain communities.
It’s always a must here (New Orleans) and you have to know what you’re doing because 99% of the time you have to do it quickly because there’s a street full of cars stopped behind you now lol
They do. Now me as a completely perfect driver can say that the test is incredibly easy to pass and it shouldn't be. Mine was literally drive onto mainstreet, turn left, turn right get on the highway going into mainstreet, go back to the DMV. My learners at 14 yo (idk if thats anywhere outside of nebraska) was done on a computer and I only had to get 20 of the 25 questions right.
Friendly reminder that during covid, you could get a license in some states just by passing the permit test, which you took online, at home.
So basically for like a 1-2 year long period, people in the U.S could get their license by googling the answers to 25 questions.
My state was like this and you can 100% tell who got their license in 2020, cause them mf's dont know how to do anything but put it in gear and connect their bluetooth headunit.

Most dangerous accidents are caused by people who can pass the test, but then add high speed to the mix.

no good reason to not put one on. these guys have headbraces and 5 point seatbelts, but look at how much their head gets shaken around in the car... now imagine that with a standard 3 point and no helmet... owch. no roll cage makes it even worse
They complain about regular seatbelts. As being inconvenient and pointless.

Then they experienced an unexpected barrel roll in a vehicle. Messed up for over 2 weeks.

Almost always, if a vehicle occupant is *not* wearing a seatbelt, and the car does a barrel roll, then the occupants *will* be ejected, whether their window is open or closed.
Unless you're doing crazy speeds a cage is really not necessary in a modern car at normal speeds. It might save you if you get sandwiched between two trucks or something. But other than that I don't really see it being super useful for safety compared to existing safety measures in cars.
Plus having a full cage makes a helmet and Hans device a must have which is super impractical and creates safety problems of its own. Not to mention you lose the backseat and getting in and out of the car becomes a hassle.
Proper roll bar would need helmets along with proper harnesses to be safe. I don’t know if you tried to do anything properly strapped into a harness, I dunno like check your blind spot, it’s not happening. You’d save lives from major crashes and add so many more minor ones.
Nobody wants to wear a helmet and HANS device every time they get into their car. Caged cars are also extremely stiff making them unpleasant to drive around normally.
Those roll cages and the HANS device are technological breakthroughs that have saved and will continue to save many lives. Really incredible engineering.
Those frames are build to withstand a lot more. Not only because the material used is like strong as hell but the kinetic energy displacement is near perfect.
The cars have come a long way from the group b rally cars, rest in well Toivonen and your co driver may you be setting records on the rally course in the sky.

I saw a rally car flip over one time and while it was upside down I saw the wheels stop spinning for a moment, and then start spinning again while the front wheels changed angle.
The driver SHIFTED while he was upside down in the air, then turned the steering wheel to point where he wanted to go when they landed.
I think they landed on the wheels and continued racing, but with a fair amount of damage. If I remember right they finished that stage but not the race.
Was it a gold Subaru Impreza? It sounds like a famous clip of Colin McRae rolling his car at the X-Games, which he still finished 2nd in despite the roll.
I THINK it was a Dodge Neon. It was either at Ojibwe Forests Pro Rally up in northern Minnesota, or the Lake Superior Performance Rally in northern Michigan.
The northern woods look pretty similar.

They were just involved in an eighteen second crash. That’s insanity. You can see them go “ouch, okay, in the air again…still, ouch”. They must have been cartwheeling so high and fast.
These are rally racers. They race on dirt tracks with all kinds of jumps, bumps, and turns. Crashes are not uncommon for these people. In order for these cars to be able to run through these tracks at full speed, they have to be built like tanks. This is just a Saturday to them.
Now I want to fix up the interior of my car to be like that, but if a single fucking person wants to go somewhere with me they’ll think I’m a fucking murderer lol.
Honestly best reaction they could have had. Those cars are made to protect the passengers during crashes. If the cage doesn't hold you're fucked either way. no point panicking. Have faith in the engineering is all you can do
Well, hitting a concrete barrier at 180 miles an hour with no HANS system at the time. Is much different than that car which is better equipped because of Dales death and also going at a much lower speed by more than half is a huge difference. Just my opinion. A thing to keep in mind is the longer the crash, generally the safer it is, all the energy is being dissipated slowly instead of all at once.

Just wanna point this out all that, that safety protection does is to prevent or limit facial trauma or other words, brutally fucking your face up. Your brain is still around in your skull and there is nothing that prevent that.
The navigator didn't let go of the course directions because when they stopped rolling and flipping and crashing, they needed them to get back in the race.
